A really nice woman came into my store yesterday, 1 day outside of her 14 day return policy. Her epic would not get a GPS lock and only ever has 1-2 bars. I didntt know what to do, as idd done all the basics...prl/profile, 72786, manually programmed...nothing worked. So I said **** it and flashed the fc18 modem to her phone. Suddenly, she had all bars and an immediate GPS lock. I know I shouldntt feel bad as thatss a good survey for me and a happy customer for sprint but I cantt help but feel like I broke some sacred rules and should be fired or stoned to death.
yes....yes you are a terrible person....
j/k idk bro it seems like you helped out a person that needed it. Are there any ramifications for do that down the road? Say she has another issue and comes back when you're not there?
man I think you are good, I would have done the same!!
If you have one more chance, try to flash the stock modem again once the GPS starts to work. I think it will work even you put the original stock modem back once it's started working. That will save your axx.
My gf works for sprint, she had to root and flash a custom rom to a customer's phone once(don't remember which) to get it to work correctly.
14 day return policy is @!#$()#$%@# bull****, if it wasn't for that crap I would have returned this because of the LOS issue.
I thank you for going above and beyond and actually HELPING a customer.
BUT, that doesn't make you a good person, you are most likely a scum bag like all of us.
Technically they cannot refuse service to someone who has rooted their phone. The MFG may not cover it but if you have TEP then they will work on it. We HAVE to, its policy. Anyone telling you they cant is wrong. So dont sweat it, if the customer is happy your gold!
She asked you to fix her phone and you did, what a jerk.

It doesn't if you ODIN'ed the modem. But it'll be an issue if you installed a custom recovery and flashed the modem from CWM. CWM would block the update.
I did the exact same thing yesterday

First off - no, you're not a bad person. In fact I'm pretty sure some companies give awards for service like that.
That said, if yours isn't one of those companies(...) you may catch some **** with the boss when she shows her phone to her friends and they come back asking for the "latest" software on their phones.
Just something to be prepared for....you totally did the right thing for the customer.

I agree. But, he should be safe either way because the average person don't even know what a "modem.bin" is, let alone know how to check which version they are on. She most likely thinks he did some magical thing that only Sprint employee's has the power to do. Assuming he's a Sprint employee.

Shell come back and he can run the latest .tar on her phone. Full stock, no triangle, no problem. I assume that's what anyone would do at the Sprint store, although I don't know how they do things there.
Yea she will be back when her phone wont accept the update and it starts to get annoying always asking to install lol.

Try updating profile/prl in system updates and reboot. If that doesn't fix it contact sprint and have them attempt to push it through reactivation.
But no, simply rooting the device will not solve the problem you're explaining. If the above steps don't work, just swap it out?? Clearly its not a widespread issue and likely has something to do with its activation.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Assuming you or he already updated the profile and PRL correctly and talked with Sprint (while on the phone to assure it is registered correctly!) I'd recommend using sfhub's stock root [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101] This provides a clean start with el29 modem, kernal and stock ROM, and provides root access. Since he's having problems I'd do a FULL restore (reset user data). I'd then use Auto Root with CWM - option C [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728]. That will give you a stock rooted phone with CWM for recovery and additions. Make sure all works. That may be enough. It could be just horrible reception at his place. Might want to check out an Airave device. There are also posts on how to tweak 3g/4g speeds [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265990] Then if all is working maybe think about another ROM. I'm loving Blazer. Calkulin's and Strong Steve's are also super. Good luck.

I absolutely LOVE everything about this phone EXCEPT the LOS issues!!
I've only had it for 5 days now and experienced 3 LOS!
Since I'm still within 14 days, should I return it? thinking of getting the Photon instead.
From personal experience I'd say hang on to it and try flashing some of the newer releases to see if it doesn't improve the LOS issue.

I know you are asking because apparently you need the help of others to make up your mind... (sorry I am a smartass) But quick question what rom are you on cuz buddy LOS is a thing of the past up in herrrre... And that PHoton are you serious would you trade in your S clase Benz for a C Class Benz....
Root that sucka and flashing one of the stock EL29 roms or do the upgrage on your phone for the complete stock version... Oh yea and if you gonna ask where the roms are then maybe you should return your phone...LOL (smartass again)
exactly, flash something different (I'd recommend calks) and that issue goes away :O

Doesn't even need to flash roms, root, and all that. Just OTA to EL29 and it should get rid of the issue.

I think almost everyone on this forum experienced frequent LOS until Sprint issued a firmware update that fixed it. I haven't experienced LOS since and it would happen to me several times a day. Update your firmware and you should see this go away. (my recommendation is to go with Calk's non-ICS firmware since it's probably the most stable at the moment)

Sounds like you need to get your phone replaced. The loss of service was fixed with ek02. el29 was the update after ek02 and it's the most recent update. You shouldn't be having any problems.
And you're flat out insane if you step down to a photon.

Yea, I would try flashing Calk's EL29. It should solve the LOS issues while improving the phone in mutliple other areas as well.
If that doesn't work, just take ot back to Sprint and replace it with another one. I would highly recommend staying with this phone though, not the Photon.

Exactly my thought... OP, as you are on EL29 you should not be experiencing LOS. Are you sure what you are experiencing is actually LOS, and not just poor Sprint service?
I'm not an expert flasher but the devs here have made it so simple I've been able to play around with several of the ICS releases but I always return to sfhub's stock-rooted EL29 and get amazing performance out of it.

Hey guys, I got a Nexus a few months ago and passed the Epic to the g/f (which I regret). Anyway, I have AOKP 35.1 on it and she is having issues. Maybe I forgot some Epic flashing routes.
The phone has EI22 baseband and I am looking to find the best g/f friendly rom (one where I can flash for her and have zero problems).
What do you think is the safest set up?
*Its been a while since I flashed on the Epic. I am on EI22 and I see EL30 is the newest build for GB. Do I need to use odin to get that, or can I just flash on top of EI22?
**I see FC09, is that the newest official?

She just gets nasty over some stupid crap sometimes. Plus, she travels a lot so I don't get much chance to work on the phone. Anyway, that was a year ago.
My lady likes to run whatever I am on. I find this useful for troubleshooting. If I can't recreate an issue on both, it's not a real issue. I made her sit on stock unrooted for a few days last month when she got a replacement phone from dropping it, and she couldn't wait to get back on an ICS rom. She made it through the random reboots on gb leaks, so anything out these days is easy for her to handle. It really depends on the individual. My techy ways have rubbed off on her over the years lol. She is smart enough to use her ipod (i know...) on wifi with a free messaging app to ask for help in the few situations that confuse her. She's a looker, does laundry, is a great mother, works, and cooks extremely well too! Needless to say we are getting married this July. I'm not sure exactly why I waited 14 years to ask her when I say it like that lol.

I cant agree with this strongly enough, though I may not have gone as far as saying no root.
Just remember, ANYTHING that goes wrong will be your fault, even if it has nothing to do with the phone itself (ie: tower down for upgrade, facebook update breaks the app, etc)

I'm unsure overall. And don't worry there's no chance it will already be mb1 lol. If new out of box, it will at a minimum be at LJ7. Ma6 and mb1 have been released in the last week. I really do not know. I went to MA6 from whatever was previous on my phone(4.1.1). then I rooted then next morning OTA MB1 and rerooted all in less than 48 hours. So i have really no way of knowing what changes were in between MA6 and MB1. There were some minor changes I noticed after updating to MA6.
Google Settings appeared in the App drawer. I think there were some keyboard modifications where there is a separate heptic feedback switch to turn on or off.
Other than that I think everything else was behind the scenes type stuff and bug fixes.

Just wanna make sure. Regardless of which baseband I'm on, any rom should work, right? Sprint roms of course. It's just that on the Note 2, some baseband versions wouldn't play nice with certain roms (cause errors, etc.). I'm seeing some roms in dev section saying, "based on ma5" or "based on ljc." Does that mean I HAVE to be on that baseband to flash that rom? Sorry for all the noobish questions but when you bounce around devices, you get confused

Samsung devices act the same. I suggest you read a whole lot more since your question reveals that you really have no idea what you are doing and a brick is in the future... I realize you're excited to play around, but the results of fapping with tissue paper and fapping with sand paper stem from more than just a simple word.

A brick is NOT in my future. Look I respect the fact that you've been around a while and have helped many out but just because I ask a noobish question doesn't mean I'm a noob. I've owned an OG Evo, a EVO 3d, the EVO 4g LTE, the galaxy nexus, the sg2, the gnote 2, and sg3 and many more I probably can't remember right now. I have been a "flashoholic" for quite a while, flashing roms, radios, mods, etc. I've even helped devs build flashable zips to install mods. I HAVE NEVER BRICKED A DEVICE. Maybe my question wasn't clear but it doesn't matter cuz I already updated my baseband to mb 1 and I've flashed several roms, all without incident. It seems to me that all roms work regardless of what baseband your on (as long as they are for the right device). I respect you and others on this forum and I just didn't appreciate the tone with which this came across.
I made the ultimate mistake the other day. I flashed a kernel for another device onto my S3 and of course paid the price of bricking my phone.
To set the scenario, I had back surgery last Thursday and was released from the hospital on Friday with a supply of pain killers and orders to not do anything. Well, while sitting around doing nothing I got bored and decided to work on a couple of my friends tablets that needed rooting and roms installed. I got them done without any issue and then decided to mess with my phone. There were a couple of new kernels I wanted to test and so I decided to do this. I booted into recovery and selected the kernel and flashed. At that moment I realized that the kernel I just flashed was not for my phone and when I tried to turn on the phone and nothing happened, I knew immediately what I had done and after saying a few nasty words to myself I started searching for a way to fix it. While searching through the forums I kept reading about MobileTechVideos.com and their ability to jtag repair phones. Since I have never had to do this and my phone was not going to work anyway I decided to give them a call and see what they had to offer. I called them and asked about their services and they said that it should be no problem fixing my phone. I live in Dallas and the company is in Bryan, about 3 1/2 hr drive, I decided the easiest and fastest way to get my phone repaired was to take it to them and wait. On Tuesday morning I drove to Bryan and dropped off my phone. When I had called them they told me it might be a couple of hours to fix it, but once I told them it was a tmobile device they told me to wait because it might only take a few minutes. During this time they showed me around the office and I was really impressed. What impressed me the most is that no one working for this comany could have been over 25, even the owner. So after a brief tour of the office, about 10 minutes, my phone was fixed and was ready to go. I paid my $60, which I believe was well worth it, said thank you and was on my way with my fully functional phone.
They never asked me to post anything and I don't have any affiliation with this company. I just want to post about a company that provided the service they said they would at a price that is reasonable since without it I would have a $600 paperweight. So if anyone ever happens to make the foolish mistake that I made and you need your S3 repaired, I would 100% recommend this company. Here is the link to their website, http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com, mods let me know if this is not allowed and I will remove it.
I know I am always questioning online companies likes these, but this particular company has earned a customer for as long as they are open and support whatever device I happen to be using. I just hope that since I made this mistake I will hopefully never make it again.
Moral of story: If on heavy doses of pain killers don't crack flash kernels. If might cost you in the end. :}
Never bricked a phone before but I've heard great things about that company. If I ever run to trouble I'll surely go to them immediately.
Thanks for the review.

Pain meds after back surgery are a definite yesssssss, just don't brick your phone. lol
Happy to read a ringing endorsement, though - also "just in case".
Hey dude. Im in Dallas too. Good to know. I read all about them. They are really good in jtag fix devices. They were the first ti have s-off on the htc one. They did it after an hour of getting the phone. I havent brick any phones yet but I have their number save just in case. I have seen where they sale the jtag device to do it yourself. It cost about $100 it is well worth it

Good service but more expensive than some.. but local is good.

I'm glad your device is back and operational. Thanks for letting us know about a trusted reputable service.

Thanks. I am not one who likes reviewing companies, but this one time I felt it was justly deserved. I read to many threads about shipping your device to someone and for a cheaper cost they will fix it. That makes me uncomfortable. I would rather pay a little more for the peace of mind. Even then I was more comfortable driving as far as I did, after just having surgery, because of my skeptism. That is why I felt the review was warranted to help someone when they are not local.

I didn't realize your phone would get bricked with a bad kernel. You can't just go into odin and restore the original system image?
Not criticizing here, I'm just trying to learn something. Glad you had a good experience, as I'm sure at some point in my life I'm going to brick a phone.

I can confirm that flashing a wrong kernel will brick your phone. I did that and still not sure if it was wrong one but in did screwed my phone, luckily I exchanged it for another device since I had it for a week.

I have done the same thing. I flashed an international ROM on my T-999. I had also read great reviews people had using Mobiletechvideos. He had mine back to me in less than 1 week. Awesome work. If someone from MTV is on here, thank you!!

It wasn't a bad kernel, it was a kernel for a different device. I was working on several devices that day and put a kernel for a nook tablet into my S3 folder by mistake. Teaches me to only work on one device at a time.

Yes don't take painkillers give em to me lol
thanks for the write up good to know
Can't you just re flash the entire rom stock or not with Odin or cwm?
I dunno, first time I "bricked" my phone was from an incorrect kernel also. Just downloaded stock touch wiz rom go to download mode and flash with Odin.
I'm not aware that you can brick your phone unless you mess with the bootloader itself.
Bricking means exactly what it sounds like. It's just a piece of useless hardware that you can't recover, in this case, with an incorrect kernel flash, you can, either through another kernel that is compatible with your device or re flash the entire rom; with either Odin or cwm.

When trying to connect to computer it would not recognize the device correctly. So no odin if you can't connect to computer. No flashing anything else if the phone doesn't turn on. That would be as hard bricked as you can get.

Yeah but you can't hard brick it if you flash a wrong kernel unless the kernel replaces your bootloader.
Oh wait, ok I get it. You flashed a kernel that replaces the bootloader also, like with the international dual boot kernel
