Hey all,
Just some information first up.
AOKP w/ milestone 4 upgraded to b28 (latest) which I didn't wipe and data to do so. Franco kernel.
Now, before I flashed b28 I could connect my phone to the computer no problems, but now it wont even show. It can charge, just wont load as a media device.
Media device under "storage>USB computer connection> is ticket (MTP).
The reason I'm a bit reluctant to reinstall the drivers on my computer is because I installed root with the GNex Toolkit, and that required special instructions.
Is anyone else having this problem with the latest update, or is it something I'm/computer is doing wrong?
Cheers!
If you use in franco's kernel then you must un check fast charge

Hey guys, I tried to use the built in hotspot app on my sprint gnex running 4.1 rujellying m1 and the computer detects Android AP but doesnt connect.
I installed wifi tether from the playstore and chose samsung galaxy nexus CDMA/LTE in the settings and my computer wont even detect its SSID.
Anything I'm doing wrong?
Tried an older version of wifi tether and still cant detect it with my computer or ipad.

I haven't needed to install any other apps. I just set it up for wifi hot spot, check the specs on the password and then just connect with another device. In my case, a Nook Color running an unlocked version of Gingerbread. Works fine.
Edit: Oh wait, you have a CDMA phone? Your carrier may have installed software to prevent this.
Yeah, but I'm on a custom Rom and trying everything and cant tether. I did everything as specified in qbking's youtube video guide and it refuses to work.

I tried this on Q & A a few weeks ago but i still haven't had any luck. So i'm hoping so Mac users will chime in and help on a possible solution to this problem.
Here's what i can tell you so far about the Galaxy SIII (at&t) & AFT...
Android File transfer works with Stock TW 4.0.4, by simply selecting PTP it opens AFT automatically on snow leopard/lion/mountain lion.
On CM9 AFT works on snow leopard but doesn't work at all on lion/mountain lion. The SD will mount on windows
On CM10 AFT works on snow leopard but doesn't work at all on lion/mountain lion. The SD will mount on windows
I might also add that with my Galaxy Nexus AFT works on Stock 4.0.4 and Stock 4.1.1 as well as CM9 and CM10
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
A friend answered the question for me. its apparently a Samsung kernel change that's causing the problem.
If I were to guess I would say Apple is not bending over backwards to help Samsung debug anything lol
Until then I'll wait....

And me too ....
I use WiFi File Transfer Pro. AFT doesn't work on my mac any longer.
FYI, it's also AFT that is a crappy piece of software. It has never worked properly. Use ADB or one of the many "wifi transfer" apps in the market. Or look into using FTP which I use on a daily basis, very nice and easy to use and is quite fast compared to other third party solutions.

I have tried a number of 4.2.1 ROMS and still have yet to find one that will let me tether my laptop. I have tried the native wifi tether...and the tethering app... It used to have no issues working with my laptop on 4.1...but since I jumped to 4.2 I can't seem to get anything going here.... Is there a working wifi tether or am I SOL...

Im currently using this ROM and native wifi tether works perfectly fine. I should add that I'm on R6, 4.2( R8 is the current one which is 4.2.1) as I've had no need to update it.
Ok..as soon as I can find a R6 ROM I will give that a shot and see what gives... My laptop connects but it says "limited connectivity" ... basically no internet...
Would the kernel make a difference? If I ran a 4.2 kernel?
Works with the Paranoid Android ROM and Franco Kernel as well.
Damn...PA is a R8 release? What the hell is wrong with mine then..LOL

If you still can't find R6 let me know, I'll upload my copy
I don't tether my laptop since I only use it at home, but I tether my nexus 7 all the time and it works fine on 100% stock and rasbean with trinity.

iLeopard if you could that would be great...it seems like everyone has switched over to R8 builds from what I can see...
Is it at all possible that it could be a kernel issue in 4.2.1 for me? The laptop connects fine, just no internet access...

works with rasbean jelly rom amd trinity kernel.
Took a while, but here it is:
R7
Pretty sure all custom ROMs has this built in. Sounds like it may be an issue with something else.

That's true, however for whatever reason this function was not fully functional in quite a few of the ROM's i've used in the past.
I been trying to get my vita to work with my tether on R8 and muzzy ROM and it connects fine but won't connect to PSN servers. But I hear some people got it to work on 4.1

Use 4.2.1 liquid and sourcery on my gnex. Tether both my laptop and N7 to it no problem with the built in ROM hotspot.

I'm using rasbean and with trinity kernel. And I can't get it to work either. Using wifi tether it gives me errors and won't show the created network. It has errors in the log creating "ap". If I try to use the builtin app it creates an "ap" and allows me to connect, but it won't actually let me to browse the Internet. This is over two rasbean roms and the stock kernel and trinity kernel. I've tried changing the device to the gsm version and I have also tried using different apps. Open garden, barnacle, etc. So I do know what else to do.
Thanks ...

I would first try flashing it clean. Wipe System/Data and Factory reset. Then before installing anything test the Native tether to see if it works. I suggest using Cyanogenmod because many ROMs are built off of it, but that is your choice. I also suggest you try connecting another device to the AP to make sure the problem is not your actual laptop. Try tethering a tablet or another phone and see if it works.

Check your drivers in windows. Also make sure you are NOT using fast charge.
I bet it is the cable. I had the same issue. Go to device manager and enable "show hidden devices". Then delete every driver that has something to do with your phone. Then plug your phone in with a diffrent cable. Worked for me. Also you can try to enable or disable usb debugging.

I had a similar issue. I couldn't get the phone to be recognized on my work PC (using a cable that has always worked) or at home on Mac using Android file transfer and a different cable. What I think happened in my case is that I was connected to my PC in MTP mode then I unselected MTP so that neither MTP nor PTP was selected. That is what was aiming for (I only wanted to charge not connect). Though then when I went to plug in later as described above nothing came up. I looked all over for the USB settings to change it back to MTP but couldn't find it. I am sure it is there somewhere.
Anyways, after rebooting several times with no luck, I went nuclear (factory reset) which did the trick. I am running Shiny 4.4.2 and have had a pretty buggy go of it. I am likely switching ROMs, not that this necessarily has anything to do with it.
Good luck!
So the other day I was tethering to my PC I disconnected to go eat cake back and now it won't connect to any computer. I really need to get this fixed. Thanks for the help in advanced.

You could try reinstalling the lg drivers on the computer. Is it recognized in windows device manager or does is not come up there as well?
Yeah, I just recently had this problem as well, except I didn't get to eat cake :[. Mine does show up in device manager, but not in drives/storage. I've been having to upload everything via dropbox or adb. I was on cm11 with cwmr and switched to cmremix and also switched to the philz touch, logically I think it might be one of those or a combination of the two that did it, but I can't be sure cause I know how my phone can just be finicky sometimes.
Edit: I did try updating to the latest lg driver and that didn't help.
I'm getting this also, I use airdroid or TeamViewer instead as a workaround
