Hi all, just bought a 2nd hand Xperia play, and noticed it was missing the play pocket thingy and when i slide open it doesnt go into the play games, also the home button doesnt work, only works when the phone is idle /sleep and i press the home button and it awakes the phone, could it be some kind of custom rom?? can i install a stock rom? not sure what info to give.
MODEL - R800i
android version - 2.3.4
kernel ver - 2.6.32.9-perf [email protected]#1
build num - 4.0.2.A.0.42
cheers jgoode
I'm not exactly sure which threads you'll want, but you'll want to use a program called Flashtool. You will end up downloading an .ftf file that corresponds to your model and build number. You will flash this .ftf file to your phone and restore it completely to factory stock. That should fix your problems.
Perhaps someone with an actual R800i could help? I believe things are a little different with the R800x, which is what I have.
Cheers, after i posted i start looking through a lot of threads on here and managed to download a generic uk stock rom and flashtool, just now trying to get java to work properly on my lappy and then see if i can install this rom lol, cheers again
The person who sold it to you probably had an old custom ROM installed (which usually had issues with hard resets), and when s/he wiped the phone s/he didn't realize that it was going to cripple the phone. A stock ROM flashed with FT will cure the sorrows of the phone.
the play app can be changed to not open when you slide out the pad, im thinking the home keys action is set to open the main home screen meaning that it looks like its doing nothing because thats the screen its set to, you could try installing another luncher from the market like launcherpro etc and see if it overrides the home key binding and asks what you want to set the default action to
Long time
firstly sorry for the long wait, ive been in hospital [seems im not made of rock and im not an american cowboy who can ride through open countryside lol]
Still have the same problem, i cant get flashtool to work [something to do with java?? But i can play minecraft ok]
As for the home button i downloaded a few launchers but still nothing from it so i downloaded an app [button savivor] i can now go straight to my home screen when surfing the web without pressing the back button a million times lol
Is there another way of flashing / installing a custom rom, offical sony rom???
Cheers again, [slighty battered and bruised] jamie
Do a google search for Wotan Server. That basically does what Flashtool does, but through an online resource. You won't have to download the firmware files yourself, just install their client and follow instructions.
I think. I've never used Wotan Server, but I've seen it recommended a lot.
Cheers, going to have a look at that.

Hi i was wondering if there was anyone out there who was kind enough to explain in detail how to install this Rom because by the looks of the pictures and the reviews, it is a great Rom. OH and if there is an answer to this already, please direct me to it because i have searched for hours and cannot find anything.
Thanks in advance
How far is your knowledge when it comes to custom ROMs? Do you have your phone unlocked?
If your phone isn't unlocked, go here:http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20370
I could use a little help to. My phone is unlocked and I have flashed another rom before but when I download the rom file I can't do anything with it. I seem to remember using another program to handle the rom file before flashing but I have looked and looked and have come up empty handed. Someone pointing in the right direction would be great.
Basically I am stuck between getting the file on the computer and starting to flash. I can get my phone to the color screen and all.
Terms you should know before-hand, haha:
-The color RGB color screen is called the Bootloader mode (you get to it by holding the power button + camera button, and sticking you stylus in the slot at the bottom of you phone to reset.)
-Hard-reseting: Flashing the phone to default state of the flashed ROM. (Hold talk key + end call key, and sticking you stylus in the slot at the bottom of you phone to reset.)
-Soft-reseting: Simply restarting your phone. (Sticking you stylus in the slot at the bottom of you phone to reset.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
0. Unlock Phone. (http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20370)
1. Go in to Boot-loader mode. (Text towards the bottom of the screen
should read "Serial" if you phone isn't connected to the PC.)
2. Connect phone to PC. ("Serial" text should change to "USB")
3. Extract the files from .rar file you download. (Use Winrar.)
4. Run ROMUpdateUtility.exe and follow the on screen instructions.
- Your phone will start showing a progress bar when the flashing starts.
- Once done, the phone will restart. (Should reset and windows should boot, but still do step 5.)
5. Hard-reset the phone.
6. Dance in place.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
*pants* Hope that helps!
Stickfigure, thanks a bunch for your summary of the ROM loading process! My Sprint Touch has been giving me lots of problems (freezing on incoming calls, data connection stops working randomly, phone not wanting to get out of roam and back into EV mode, and many many more). Needless to say, it is frustrating and I want to throw it at a wall. I'm sure my reset button is going to fail since I've poked it so many times.
Anyways, I've been wanting to install a custom ROM and finally have the chance during my spring break from classes, but I wasn't quite sure how to do it. Your post definitely helps.
One more question...is the process basically the same if I want to install a different custom ROM? If you know of any other tutorial or noob info pages that might help me I'd appreciate it too.
Thanks again!
Stickfigure, thanks for the instructions. Winrar was the piece that I was missing. Once I installed that I had the new rom installed the the phone was working fine in a bout 15 minutes.

There are some great tutorials out there for beginners, one of the best of which is Dharvey's "UPDATED- CONSOLIDATED Rev A./GPS TUTORIAL" found on PPCGeeks; it is no longer available for some reason, but you may be able to find a repost somewhere.
Thanx
Thankx every one who contributed to this thread because it really helped.
Hi all,
Thanks to those who have helped along the way. None of this is my work, I am just putting it all in the one place for those who are in a similar situation as me - wanting to do get onto JG5, but not knowing how. Hopefully you can follow along!
This is the first time I've ever done anything to an Android phone, so consider me a noob! Here's all the files I used - multiupload.com/66CNCCTE4W (you will need to copy and paste the link into your address bar as I can't post links yet
Before you start, I did this on my Australian Samsung Galaxy S, so I'm not sure how different your model is!
Before starting, unzip the downloaded file above to your hard drive, and extract it to an easy to find folder - I'd suggest somewhere on your desktop.
1. Open the Odin3_v1.0 folder
2. Run Odin3_v1.0.exe program
3. Select the PIT, PDA, Phone and CSC files by clicking on the button, then locating the file in the I9000XWJG5 folder
a) PIT - s1_odin_20100512.pit
b) PDA - CODE_I9000XWJG5.tar
c) PHONE - MODEM_I9000XXJG1
d) CSC - CSC_I9000OXXJG4.tar
4. Remove the External MicroSD Card and the Sim Card
5. Turn the phone off
6. Get into download mode by pressing volume down + home key + power button
7. Connect the USB Cable from phone to computer
8. Wait for the drivers to be automatically installed.
9. Once drivers are fully installed, click START in Odin.
And that should be it!
P.s. I had to manually select my Network by going into Settings, Wireless and network, Mobile networks, and then selecting the Network (for me it was Optus). You will probably want to select Swype as the default input. To do this, press and hold a text input field, and press input and select Swype.
I hope this helps - please let me know how it goes for you!
*(Edited to include only flashing phone - I originally thought you had to root it first!)
You don't need to do step one and two.
lol,why bother about root ur device when u can straight away flash it like step 3??
Why do we need step one and two before ?
Since we are going to flash new rom and will need to do those again ????
Didnt work
So i tried to flash my SGS last night but it didnt turn out so well.
put all the bits and bobs in (.pit pda phone and modem) and then connected the phone in Download mode, seemed to connect to Odin, ID:COM 0:[COM20], clicked start, it seemed to be working so went to check on dinner and when i came back it didnt seem to be doing much, screen on the phone was blank and odin looked like it was tring to move across factoryfs.rfs, i look in the CODE file and saw that the factoryfs.rfs file was huge so thought id just leave it and wait. but nothing left it for 4-5 hrs then left the comp on all night when i cam back it was in the same spot but said removed and the phone was showing a phone then triangel with a ! inside the computer. so i unpluged it took out the bat and put it back tried turning it on, same thing, turned it off again and put into download mode seems to work but didnt get a chance to play with it at home, at work now and cant do it because it asks for admi privileges to install the drivers, so ill wait till im home again. anyone got ideas of what it might be? should i have connected to port 7?
Really? There ya go. Told you I was a noob! Sorry to confuse people. I have edited the original post so it only shows the flashing part.
#4 is not needed.
BTW: your tutorial is already stickied in the big faq (post 2).
I think alot of noobs will find this very useful. It's easier to follow for those who are flashing for the first time, i'm sure others wil appreciate your effort.

Hey Zac,
Don't worry if the steps are already in post # 2. I find yours better and more direct. More importantly, your phone is also from Australia, same as mine.
Thank you for taking the trouble to post this. I've been helped. I'm a bigger noob I guess
The only problem is that I don't seem to be able to download it. It stops after a few bytes. Know of any alternative links?
Edit: On the other hand, after going through some of the comments on threads related to JG5, all the problems are still there, so I don't see any real advantage over JG3. Will stick to this, since I'm about to get a replacement for my phone soon.
Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank you!!
I really want to thank you 4 this!! Damn you're the man!! This fixed my broked SGS immediately!! I can't thank you enough my best friend 4 ever!!
How do i get Superuser in to this?? And can i use Lagfix 2.0 too?? Please answer to me..i'm so so so damn gr8ful about all your hard work! Do i have to root my SGS again and where i can find the latest file update.zip which works with this your version?? I have already update.zip but it's kinda old file though.
Like i said earlier:
Thank you!!
Thank you!!
Thank you!!
Thank you!!
Thank you!!
PS: I gave 5 stars !!
Dude don't stress!
For rooting/superuser read my tutorial!

After that you can either apply One click lagfix or the CFLagFix 1.80!
I would recommend CFLagFix 1.80!

LauncherPro problems
Hiya!!
U have any idea when i installed this jg5 my launcherpro won't work anymore at all, it just force closes all the time and i can't open my phone at all?? Why this is happening??
How do install this but still use LauncherPro??
( Though it works when i install it but immeadiately when i try ty restart my LauncherPro it starts to force close 24/7)
When i did a factory reset it didn't make it completely, it left something in in phone about this jg5...maybe that's why my LP is not working anymore...
Sorry but i'm a noob so don't judge me, i have a question now, where i can get "Stock 2.1 Eclair"?? I have now FRF91.372 2.2 in my phone it works like ****!! I don't even get LauncherPro work without continious force closes...i want that firmware where LP works without any force closes!!
Please help a noob...please, now i know how to use Odin, cause i have flashed already 3 times. But all the firmwares what i've tried have sucked.
PS: Is there any way i can do a raw clean for my SGS before install new firwmare, i ask cause i want to SGS completely empty before i install new firmware, is this possible?? I heard that if you swype your SGS empty new firmware will work much better...but this is just a rumour though

All the ROMs that are released by Samsung themselves are stock ROMs, e.g. JG5 is a Stock Eclair 2.1 ROM.
my Xperia Play R800i will not turn on anymore after i tried to flash a rom... i dont exactly remember which one it was... i hope its not important
what my phone does is showing the Sony Ericsson logo and just stays there... i had it on the entire day just be sure that i wasnt doing something in the background or anything ...
but i never did it on my phone yet... (maybe better if never did this now i think of it)
but anyway pc companion says "null" and thats all it will say further it cannot detect my phone or do anything with it
i hope flashtool works if anyone is willing to lead me through it.
i dont have warranty anymore.

Would you happen to have a custom kernel? Which Sony Ericsson logo is it, the non-moving one or the animated one?
Now, you wouldn't have happened to install a CyanogenMod, Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean rom, would you? I know you don't remember which rom you installed, just trying to spark a memory. Anyway, if you did so, then all you need to do is flash a compatible kernel. You see, if the Sony Ericsson logo you are seeing is the non-moving one, then you have the stock kernel, the one that's incompatible with the aforementioned roms.
If you don't want to get involved with this kernel business, then I've provided a Flashtool guide, so you can at least get your phone to a working, albeit factory reset, state:
First, install Flashtool.
Go here and find what you think your stock firmware was, download it.
Place the .ftf file in your Flashtool/firmwares directory.
Open Flashtool (as administrator if necessary) and click on the lightning bolt in the Flashtool window. Highlight Flashmode and select OK. A new window shall pop-up.
Select your downloaded firmware. I should read "R800i" in the first box and "4.0.2.A.0.XX" (with the "XX" being the number of the version you downloaded) in the second, the contents of the third box varies, so disregard it. There are many options for what to keep/replace during flashing, but I'd recommend leaving them as they are. Select OK. The window will now close and a new window will pop-up shortly after.
This window will detail the proceeding steps: With your turned-off phone (make sure its battery is intact), hold the back key (the leftmost one) while inserting the usb from your computer to your phone, continue holding the key until the window closes, DO NOT REMOVE THE USB.
The Flashtool window will now begin streaming various lines detailing its progress, all you need to look for is the line detailing a successful flash which with then tell you to disconnect your phone, now you can remove the USB.
Go ahead and close the remaining Flashtool window, your phone should now be back to default, factory reset, everything except your phone's bootloader and SIM unlocked statuses, they should be how you left them before.
thanks!

Okay, having not used stock in a long time, I've reverted my rom and kernel! Upon doing so, I noticed little wrong. Though I do remember an annoying prompt when I opened the browser, it'd say "Please insert SIM card" and "downloading settings" would pop-up following it.
Aside from that, I can't recreate the problem you're having. Could you go into more detail?

Well... That's something I have never seen before...
Searched the Q&A and troubleshooting section, and I'd found a thread detailing such an error upon switching firmware. No offence but perhaps I didn't give you enough detail on which firmware to download, and for that I apologise.
Would you happen to know what branding your phone is, and post what it is and which firmware you installed (you can find said information in that third box I told you to ignore in Flashtool)? AT&T, Verizon, unbranded/no SIM/unlocked? I ask this as you may have installed incompatible firmware.
As an example, my phone was unbranded and came with no SIM, the pre-installed installed firmware (and the only one that I find to be fully compatible) was the R800i 4.0.2.A.0.42 UK Generic. In the context of stock roms, I find that it's best not to stray.
Anyway, you've probably already figured out what to do: find the intended firmware and flash it, using the instructions above. I'd recommend gathering some more outside help, changing the thread's title to reflect the current conundrum should be a good starting point.
will do

Oh, sorry about that. I'd only ever experienced an APN problem when one of the roms I had installed had a broken settings app.
Anyway, it's nice to see that you've fixed your phone yourself, congrats!
Hello my friends! i have oe Xperia Play (R800i) with the default android verion (2.3.4 i think) and, yesterday i was playing Street Fighter 4 (Installed yesterday, but alerdy have the game before and i think its not the problem) and Asphalt 8 with Money MOD (maybe the game was too much for my poor Xperia Play, the game have great graphics, and have some legs because this when playing..).
But i think the real problem is the Ram Manager PRO... Yep, that program is mah doom (or no lol)!
And the only thing i have doing in the ram manager was:
Used three of the ore-set profiles to ram improvement (Balanced, more free memory and hard gaming.), and i tried to put in default so see the diference in the game (and was awesome how the program works!) but...
The other only thing i do was BY ACCIDENT... and that was probably increased the VM Heap Size, unintentionally...
i choice the VM Heap Size option and then marked 512MB ram (The MAXIMUM RAM in my xperia play!), but i pressed the back button in intention to cancel this, but the phone messenge me saying i have to reboot to get thius works... So after this i played Asphalt 8 until the phone battery was dead... maybe thats the problem... theres some way to redo that without booting the xperia play?
I dont have Clockwork MOD installed, My cell is Rooted and my Bootloader is locked, plz, halp!

the firmware http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1589399
Hello. I've rooted my Verizon Xperia Play, but I can't unlock my bootloader. I've checked the service menu, I don't have the ROOTING STATUS menu, and the Flashtool identifies BOOTLOADER STATUS:UNROOTABLE.
I've tried Sony's unlock site but my MEID contains letters whilst the website states it has to be numeric. I've used the S1tool with the TP method and S1tool appears to hang, with the green bar along the bottom freezing after the "usb connected" noise plays; but if I unplug the usb I get an error, so I know the application didn't crash. I don't know if I'm letting go of the contact, or even if I'm doing it correctly because almost all pictures of the TP method are gone. I also don't know how long the S1tool TP procedure should take, and I've (or I think) held the contact for 15 minutes without any prompt or change in the program.
I don't know what to do now, or does this simply imply a sealed fate? Is it just not possible for me to unlock my bootloader?
I really need to partition my storage and ram but apparently can't without an unlocked bootloader.
(wrote all this with on-screen keyboard, sorry about errors/confusion)
Any help is deeply and sincerely appreciated!!
Thanks Again,
From a Newbie
haha I didn't think anyone would be in the same boat as me, let alone within the same year
I've been scouring the web for probably a good 5 hours on this and I'm stuck right where you are. By some miracle, I was able to find all the files I need for CM9, the flash tools, Gapps, and etc.
I also was able to get it rooted, and in dt674's guide I'm stuck on step 15. Fastboot recognizes my device and all the files but when I try to send the recoveryPLAY.img it returns the "FAILED" error and tells me that it has to be rooted first... Even though it already is rooted... I would assume it would have to do something with the bootloader still being locked, and like you, the Sony website didn't accept my MEID code for not being entirely numerical... If I find anything else out though I'll keep in touch.
I'm in the same boat as you guys... Managed to get my R800X rooted by flashing to 2.3.3 then using the oneclick method, but I've got the same issue with the bootloader and the numerical MEID.
Honestly given the Xplay's age I think we're pretty much SOL and too late to the party when trying to look for support on this device. Most of the ROM links are dead, and the more supported/popular ones are for the GSM models, and the ones that still have their files hosted require an unlocked bootloader at that. Unless one of you guys has a magical solution for why our MEID's are messed up I'm stuck on 2.3.3 for now. At least I can still sideload mostly everything I need.
Yeah I'm pretty sure zzkoto is right lol. Just too damn old haha, so we're SOL.
I have reached out to the developer site support though, and I'm trying to get them to investigate the problem regardless. I've only gotten one email back in...a two month time period about? So we'll see what happens. Apparently they updated their site and fixed the problem... but it's still broke for me. Will post if I get any juicy details from them, or they email me about any fixes with the MEID errors on the site.
LADS, so they HAVE fixed their website, it's just at a new URL, and they haven't decommissioned the old one yet for some reason, which can be found in this very hyperlink.
And it works great, I got my code after inputting my MEID, shoved that into an ADB string and ka-blammo it's unlocked no problem.
Now I'm running LuPuS Kernal with CM9, but now I'm hitting a brick wall where the darn Wifi won't even bother to turn on (when it did with stock before) which I guess is a problem with R800x and the Play in general... Back to the drawing board lol.... Think I'm gonna scrap the CM9... Anyone Come across any good Kernal/Rom combos that make the Xperia Play a lean mean Emulation Machine? I'm feeling some classic PS1 MGS lately...
Alright here's one last update, just in case y'all have the same problem as me with Wifi.
I went back to stock 2.3.4 and my recovery Kernal, and Wifi worked again, so I decided to try something different. Installed DoomLords 2.3.3 Kernal v01 (the only download that worked on that page). Then after booting into recovery, I restored into Cola v6. After that I installed DoomLords wifi modules zip in CWM and boom wifi works again, and Play works completely as intended. Only hang up now is that the Android Market won't let me download anything because it's so old, but It's easy to get the apk's on my other phone and move and install them. Other than that it's incredible. Happy hacking y'all.
Great find on that bootloader fix mate, I'll have to look into that and getting some custom ROMs/kernals installed.
For the market not working, Google discontinued support for the old Android Marketplace services or something back in early 2017. But if you install the latest 2.3 compatible version of the Google Play Store, Google services should be back up and running with modern-ish apps.

Yo I figured it was something like that haha but I was overthinking it way too much. Thanks for the link to the Market, now I'm gonna go ham and get ALLL the emulators lol. Retro games here I come!
