My wife is currently about to enter her last semester of nursing school. She has had an EVO for about 6 months I'd say, which most of that time she was Rooted but on the stock ROM, until she got tired of stuff not working right.
I gave her the Synergy ROM which she took a while to get used to, the only issue she had was text messages not sending, then sending over and over and over. I then convinced her to try CM7, and switched her to Google Voice. Apparently she is getting FC issues, and she claims that battery is just as bad, as well as random reboots. She now wants something that is STABLE above all else, and has battery life that will last her through a day.
What would the best option be? Im opting to go back to Synergy since the texting issue should be fixed with GV, but any way to optimize that battery?
Thanks in advance,
Adam.
Do you have an Airave (sp?)? That will cause the texting issues you describe, at least it does for me and over heard of others having the same problem.
I'd suggest MIUI if she doesn't need 4G, it's been stable for me for almost a year. You have to be careful which build you choose, as some of the newer ones are not stable. If you decide to try it, I can point you towards my favorite build that are known to be stable.
If she does need 4G or just doesn't like MIUI, if say try a close to stock rom. I hear the Mik roms are good, but I've never personally used them. Warm 2.2 was the last Sense rom that I ran. It was a long time ago and is now outdated, but I liked it for the few days I ran it.
Supersonic Evo 4G | MIUI | Tapatalk
I'd recommend MikG v3.0 or Tommeytomatoes Classic v0.0.5 Finale. She won't have any problems at all and she'll get great battery life as well. Chopsuey kernel pairs up great with MikG.

Hit that thanks button if I managed to help.
Thanks, flashing MikG now.
We dont have an airave, only way the texting issue happened was with the stock messaging app. Even with CM7 it did until we switched to GV.
My wife had evo for little over a year. We tried pretty much all roms, but always go back to stock. If you want everything to work, then stick with last OTA. My recommendation would be stick with stock. Perhaps get an Anker battery from ebay.
Vaelpak GB or vaelpak rc 3.2 are both quality roms

If she wants aosp go with Deck 1.3d with the LEE kernel. That's what I run and I get great battery life and zero fcs.
If she wants sense Mik 3.0, Classic, and Swag out of stock are great and stable. My wife runs mik 3.0 and loves it. She charges her phone about every other day.

I'd say infected rom eternity. sense 3.5. it's what i'm using right now and in my experience it is super stable. i dont think i've had one FC issue in the past few days i've been running it. battery life is decent also.
My wife is running MikG v3.0. Can't go wrong with a MikROM. I wouldn't trust anything else on her phone, because if there are issues, I'll have to hear about it. And Mik's ROMs don't have any.
Thanks guys, already put MikG 3.0 on it, and she loves it.
I actually thought to try it, and this brought me back to Sense. I've been swearing by AOSP roms for a long time now, and this out lasts them and just feels more stable. It might not be as smooth as AOSP, but the stuff that is supposed to work just works without issue.
Have been running this for 2 days now and I think we're set. Thanks again guys!
Have you tried applying the tweaks from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470921
It might make your phone smoother and faster.
.... Double Post....
CM7 with SavagedZen kernel has always been rock-solid for me with fantastic battery life. Add the supercharger script too and it flies. Seems so much faster than any sense based rom and looks great with the ICS theme for ADW

I was getting ready to make a thread to ask this very question when I saw this one.
It seems that the MikG v3.0 is the way to go. Thanks for the tips.
I am used to Samsung phones, so I am a bit rusty on the EVO, so had a few questions..
Should I return to full stock, get the OTA, then apply this ROM?
Any concerns I should watch out for if I do go back to stock and accept the latest OTA, or do you guys recommend another path to get to the MikG ROM?
I got a pretty good handle on modding, was just looking for a basic highlevel overview of things to watch out for, that I may not have run into on my Samsung devices.

There's no reason to do anything related to the OTA prior to flashing MikG. If you already have a custom recovery (RA-supersonic - if it's CWM, that's the first thing you should change), just nandroid, do a full wipe (everything except SD Card), and then flash the ROM. If you need to backup apps, use my backup pro or Titanium Backup on the current ROM.
Go Deck
If you don't mind ditching a Sense interface for AOSP then I would suggest Deck's Gingerbread ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078558.
Just about tops for the two reasons you seem to be looking at... Stability and battery life.
His new ICS ROM has amazing battery life (over 2 days, single charge) but it's not at a daily-driver stage yet.
Good luck!

Thanks, but Sense needs to stay, she is an iPhone type, if it dont look the same, its to much to handle, no matter what other benefits comes from it.
ROFL!!!
EDIT: Thanks for the tips, I updated to the newest RA, installed Mik, and restored data, worked like a champ!!!
Appreciate the help!!
Like the title said, I finally jumped on board. I got the Evo at launch, and used it until October. I saw the Epic when it came out, but I thought it was too big, so I decided to wait for the iPhone. Well, long story short, it was a mistake lol. Small screen, locked-down software, etc etc. Well now that bad boy's gonna be up on craigslist and I'm back in the world of Android.
So far, I'm very pleased.
Any rom recommendations? I use to run Calkulin's Evo rom for a while, and I see that he has an Epic rom, so I guess I'll give that a spin first
Just try out his rooted fb17 build with the fb15 modem I've been using it as my daily since it was dropped.
Ics is super awesome on this phone just for the love of god DO NOT USE CWM TOUCH RECOVERY. i don't wanna see another i bricked my phone thread lol.

I would advise against using any of the ICS roms as they are not daily driver status yet (I'm running an fb21 setup so I know).
Go with Blazer 4.0, until more work is done on the ICS ones, this will be your best bet for battery life, stability, and smoothness. I ran Calkulin's for a long time and his rom is good but Blazer definitely gets better battery life.

Try them all but some good advice is until you get comfy with flashing and the little changes from the OG Evo to the Epic, I would just flash stock custom roms and leave those ICS roms alone like the poster above me just said. No need to bork your new phone so fast incase you do something wrong. Also stay away from the Touch recovery until they do some more testing on it... Just my opinion
I'd recommend both Calkulin's ROM, and Blazer ROM at the current time (And they're both excellent developers, so i'd think their future releases will be good also)... not to say the other ROM's available aren't good, I just personally haven't used them so I can not speak on something I haven't experienced. I expect a lot of ROM's to be released soon based on ICS, so the ROM recommendation might change soon.
Welcome, enjoy your new phone
Thanks for all the recommendations. Honestly, I haven't had much of a reason to root the device. The main reason I rooted the Evo was to get rid of Sense, and increase battery life.... needless to say I have neither of those problems on the E4GT.
I'll probably just root but stick with the current ROM I'm running so that I don't have to start from scratch. Once the ICS roms become more stable, I'll look into those.

Honestly, that's what I am doing. I have a stock ROM with root and CWM... and I'm observing the ICS progress and waiting for a decent, stable ROM/Kernel/Recovery then I'll make a change. My phone is important to me, so I observe to watch the testing and such before diving in.
I kept it stock myself and its been very well.... Bought my et4g about a week ago also for 200 bones... Frekaing steal basically

There are several Alpha/Beta ICS roms out right now but I would strongly suggest using the older ones for now. Too many people are bricking their phones trying to run ICS. If you must do ICS I would suggest completely restoring your phone back to 100% stock and then installing ICS to a stock/unrooted rom.
I personally am using Calkulin's EL29 (v.2.8.1) rom with the EL29 Kernel and EL29 baseband. It is Gingerbread 2.3.6 but it is insanely stable, extremely responsive; especially if you don't use the TouchWiz but instead use GoLauncher.
I rooted mine so i could delete twiz and all the bloat, then i found team nocturnals dark ics blend rom and flashed it and the fb21 modem and life is good, got rid of all the ugly colors and twiz and fb21 modem increased my 3g data from 100kbps to 1mbps now when i use my og evo it looks dirty from the lower screen quality and its sooooo laggy compared to thia beast

Cm9 ftw! It's a few more steps at the moment to flash and get some fixes for gps and ext sd to work, but it's so beautiful on this phone. I can't stand tw and all the bloat.

I'm looking for a great combo, something stable, for someone's phone...he's a real good friend who had someone mod his phone a while back on froyo and it has never had an update, so since I have AOKP on my Epic4G I put it on his, and it seems to have missing features (his GPS is broken and no front camera that I can find) and reboots quite often etc..of course the froyo ROM he was on was pretty much 100% working...so...
Is there a good ROM/Kernel combo that is 100% working, or at least 98%? lol
Preferably 4.0.3 or 4.0.4 version? I'd like to overclock it a little bit, and I see that some kernels add the 10 point touch and some other nice mods, but he's from out of town and will be leaving monday and is using his phone in the meantime so I really can't do my usual trial-and-error here because of the time constraints..so that's why I'm looking for suggestions..
I basically have to get the files ready to flash and do a 30-minute-jobby so there's little room for bad-flashing and errors etc.
Thanks!

If your looking for a ICS rom your going to have bugs. So far no ics Rom on the EVO 4g has FFC,camcorder, and panoram(if it has full hwa),4g and other tiny bugs. There are some kernels that support 10 point touch but I believe I've only seen them on sense gingerbread kernels. If your looking for a super stable rom that he will have no problems with I recommend Mikg it is sense 2.1+3.0 hybrid. I also suggest using lionfish kernel since it supports 10 point touch( note: 10 point touch only works if your screen supports it. If your screen doesn't you only get 2 point touches)

Hello guys so I was browsing through the threads but couldn't quite find an answer to my question so I figured I would post this. I currently have a photon 4g and my wife has a e4gt she doesn't need anything fancy as far as roms go but I did have her on an older version of blazers rom that kinda messed it self up so since ICS was out I flashed her back to rooted stock, but the ICS stock build has been complete garbage on her phone massive problems with 4g data losing connectivity, nad just an overal slugish and glitchy feel to it. I want to flash her back to an ICS rom but I wasn't sure what the most stable one out now is. I have cm9 on my photon and I can put up with the glitches but I didn't know if cm9 was more stable on the e4gt or if another rom would be better for her. Like I said something basic is fine just stable is all she needs cause she is not very tech savy. I would appreciate your guy's opinions on roms because I haven't been keeping track of the progress for the e4gt. thanks again.

I can't speak for the other ROMs but use CM9 nighlies as my daily. The only issues for me are known; No PRL/Profile update unless you flash temp EL29 ROM, occassional issue with custom rings going back to system sounds, etc. Certainly no deal breakers anyway.
You could always flash manufan721's rom..its awesome...lol..just kidding...what it sounds like shes looking for is maybe a close to stock rom with decent tweaks...any of calkulins roms would be good..not overthemed..nothing fancy, but it doesnt need to be with calks name behind it..just check development thread, flash it and update the kernel..the layout of rom wont be overwhelming and she'll be happy...then you can flash my rom for her..lol

Anyone who can help:
Although I really enjoyed this phone since it first came out, I have since moved on to many other phones. Unfortunately, my friend in another state 1400 miles away, has not. He is in Denver, and tells me there is still no 4g lte yet, which is the main reason he still has his evo 4g (Wifi Tether the wimax).
I live too far away from him now, and haven't touched evo 4g roms since the myn warm days. Anyways, he is really far behind on modems and rom, and since he is rooted with s-off, it should be simple enough to cloud share flashable zips for him to flash in recovery.
The issue is, going back to these forums is so confusing when you've moved on to another android phone and manufacturer. Does anyone know of a good solid, battery efficient, yet better than stock, stock themed rom, that looks mostly incognito to stock?
From my preliminary research, it looks like this phone never made it to a stable ICS, JB, or even AOSP / CM, stable meaning all native functions work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

"Flash all the ROMs!"
Seriously, try a few.
As a courtesy to you I will observe there are very few lightly themed ROMs based off of the latest OTA.
There are tons of choices based off of CM that get you very actively supported, stable, and fully functional builds based of of 2.3.7. But if you're looking for Sense ROMs based off of OTA 5.07, it's slim pickings.
Note 5.07 is not a really momentous change in the stock ROM experience, just a few "features" and "security" improvements that benefit Sprint more than the user really.
If you want a *huge* choice of stock based ROMs, you might want to relax your definition of what qualifies as the "latest" stock OTA version and select from the many excellent 4.67-based offerings instead (eg Classic). Or even 4.54/4.53. (eg MikG) Or ports based off of similar HTC phone builds from that era (eg myn's Synergy). That generation of ROMs marked the great golden age of Sense Evo ROM development.
Then again the latest OTA itself may just meet your needs - see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671395
It does in fact meet all the criteria in the thread title and of course nothing looks more "incognito to stock" than stock. Good luck,
Wow, thanks for your input! I'm probably going to Dropbox him the latest OTA and modems, just so I don't have to hear him complain if anything doesn't work. When I had this phone, I always wanted cm in it with GPS and wimax, camera, etc, stable. I'll just get a Debloated and slightly tweaked one over to him.
My friend isn't a flashaholic like I am, and the last thing I want to do is be on the phone with him, walking through flashing a bunch of roms.
Thanks again!

Since the EVO lacks ICS/JB drivers for the FFC and WiMax (4G), you will want to stick with a Gingerbread ROM. If I had to recommend a ROM that is near stock but better, I would give +1 to MikG 3.11 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038967 with Ca1ne's Classic Sense SBC Kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1557248 or SS Ultra http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28462129 which includes Ca1ne's Underworld SBC kernel.
I highly recommend Official BlakCM TSP 10.1.
It's 4.2 but so far it's the best rom I've found.
The big thing for me is that it hardly uses any juice when it's not in use!!
Leave it alone for a day & you'll only use about 10%.
