GB tar file - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I was looking for a link to a rooted GB rom that is a tar. I found a lot that are zip files as well as the one click file but I need a tar file. I would like to have a gingerbread rom that I can flash using mobile odin.

You're supposed to be able to throw a one-click exe at Mobile Odin and have it flash it.
"Separate files (named after the partition) as well as .tar and .tar.md5 files are supported. Specific .exe files (Odin3Excutor one-click packages) are also supported." - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19375406&postcount=2

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize it would utilize the one click file.

When to use 512.PIT & when to use 513.PIT?...

Thanks in advance,
The Board!
You can read about it in the thread called:
[REF] BIG FAQ Thread! {Flash/Root HOWTO} {ADB&Tutorials} {T&T} [READ BEFORE POSTING!]
It's located right here in Galaxy S I9000 Android Development section.
27.What is the .pit file? Why are there different versions?
The .pit file contains information regarding the partitioning of the internal ROM (note, that this is NOT the internal SD card! They are different memory chips!) and it is used during the flashing procedure. There are currently two version of the .pit file, respectively ending on 512.pit and 513.pit. They differ in that they have different partition sizes stored for each of the partitions that is created on the ROM. As of now, all ROMs seem to be functioning without any problems when the 512.pit file is used, whereas ROMs from version XWJG5 on do not work when the 513.pit file is used.
Not that these describe the partition of the ROM, however, they only actually change the sizes of the partitions if the 'repartition' option is checked in Odin3 during flash. You can flash providing the 513.pit file while your device is formatted according to the 512.pit file, however, this can cause unforeseen complications and it is advised to either use the .pit file according to which your phone is partitioned or alternatively select the 'repartition' option during flash.

From what I can tell you can't go wrong with 512.pit.
PIT and firmware upagrade by ODIN
I downloaded my original firmware from samsung-firmwares.com and decided to try and flash using odin. I thought I would try and flash without putting a PIT file in the allocated PIT file box and only putting the PDA in the PDA file box.
For some reason those files must have the PIT file built into the PDA. Am I correct in saying that? Because it worked for some reason. Am I going to have problems down the track because I never added a PIT file when flashing with ODIN.
Cheers

As I know pit is needed for all flash (well, at least the tutorial from samsung-firmwares told us so)
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Flashing Kernel file alone doesnt need to use PIT file..

DSIXDA and compatible files

Guys,
I am trying my hand using Dsixda+Cygwin and I want to load up a ROM to test with. It says it can use .tar, .img, or factory ROM files but I am not having any luck with it recognizing my files. I have tried the .tar and .win files from CWM and TWRP backups but Dsixda does not recognize them. How can I create a backup of my current ROM into a file that Dsixda will recognize and allow me to modify?
Thanks,

How to extract stock ROM to retrieve certain files

Hello all,
I sold off my note 2 but i miss the ringtones that it had. I want to extract them from the stock ROM and use it in my current device.
I extracted the .tar.md5 file and a few .img files appeared. I tried to extract / view the system.img file but I couldn't. These programs couldn't read the .img files.
What should i do?
You need to convert system.img file to ext4
Then you can mount that on Linux.
Or
Simply request someone to port from device, that will be easy with root explorer.

[Q] What Firmware file do I put in the PDA Slot in ODIN?

Ok I'm stumped. I am rooting my phone for the first time on "ODIN". Last time I did it using the toolkit.
So, now I downloaded the ROM I wish to flash. The directions for using ODIN says to put the Firmware file in the PDA slot. After I had downloaded the ROM, it is a zip folder. I had extracted the zip folder and there are many folders. Which one am I putting in the PDA Slot? Thanks?
