I'm S-On so I'm used to flashing the boot image through adb. I tried to flash a different kernel on aokp milestone 4 but it didn't stick after reboot somehow. Do I need to flash it through adb as well a certain way? I'm hoping to get better battery life out of my phone with the aokp.
Can somebody please help me on this. I flashed the latest aeroevan cm9 and his kernel and wifi won't work. I assume I need to flash custom kernels differently since i'm htc unlocked.

i have a unbranded wildfire s 2.3.5 unlocked bootloader via htc dev with cwm recovery 5.0.1 and rooted. i watched some videos of MrTaco505 from youtube about overclocking and rooting. i flashed mine with OCkernel2.3.5.v2 by jikantaru.zip hoping to enable me to setcpu on the phone. after flashing the phone just freezes after boot. i installed it with stockkernel.zip for wildfire s hoping to correct the problem but after flashing the phone is stuck on white htc logo. i have several questions in mind that needs clarification
1. does roms here have their own kernels inside their package?
2. how long does it take for a rom to flash it? and what would the phone look like? (i havent tried thisa nd scared of doing this but i dont have other choice coz my phone is unusable)
3. what are the standard procedures in flashing a rom?
4. since i have no choice, im flashing a rom in cwm recovery using sdcard. is this safe?
5. does a rom like unofficial cm7.2 for wildfire s have its own kernel inside the package? do i need to download another kernel for the rom?

1 - Yes, most custom roms come with a working OC kernel
2 - Depends on the size of the ROM. but usually no longer than 5 mins
3 - You have cwm. standard procedure is to install a rom in a zip format. btw you really should update cwm and flash the latest official versio 5.0.2.8
4 - as written above, this is the standard way to flash custom roms. it is safe
5 - All roms, wether they're custom or stock ship with a kernel. but custom ones most of the time come with an OC kernel.
Hello all well I have been following the forums much lately and have finally managed to root my Xperia Arc mobile [Lt15i]
Now the question here is that while flashing a custom kernel I was encountered with the "1 block damaged" error and hence for a while my phone got bricked which I later recovered by flashing with Flashtool.
Now I want to install custom roms and most of the tutorials which I have gone through guides us to flash the custom kernel and then flash the custom rom using recovery.
Now since that doesn't happen in my case, I was thinking whether I could just "boot" the recovery mode and then flash the custom rom.
Would it work? From what I've been reading, it seems custom roms and kernels work in conjunction... am I right or are custom roms independent of kernels?... it's just that I've been sitting here on this chair for 6 straight hours [trying to bring my arc back to life] and before I do anything I really want to be sure becuz I've gone through a big hassle.

No most of the roms here needs a kernel to work. There are some few that works.
Have you tried to flash kernel with fastboot method ??

In my experience, it depends on the custom rom.
Some custom roms, for example JJ's Hybrid will work with the stock kernel from Sony. These are usually roms that are based off the official Sony, but with various modifications and tweaks.
Other custom roms, for example FreeXperiaProject/Cyanogenmod require you to use a custom kernel as well. These roms are usually built from Android's open source code.
In any case you will need a phone with unlocked bootloader for custom roms because of the need for Clockworkmod.
Re: What you said about just booting recovery.
Yes it is possible to just temporarily "hotboot" a kernel with CWM recovery built in, BUT this requires fastboot mode, and unfortunately on Arc fastboot mode requires an unlocked bootloader.

As far as I've searched, clockworkmod doesn't support the arc yet and the "wiki" method which I read had to use flashing using "fastboot boot boot.img" method which gives me the "1 bad sector error". Which is why I refrain from trying it.
Plus he's given the green signal that it works on stock kernel. Only the CWN mod is a problem!

I'm pretty sure you can use the same kernel for a CM7 ROM since stock and CM7 are the same Android version, basically.
However, to use an ICS based ROM, flashing a custom kernel is necessary.

It means that i can flash CM7 on stock???? Without flash a custom kernel??? If that is true then CM7 works on locked bootloader....
No. You must have a custom kernel for a custom ROM. Any ROMs that can be flashed on locked bootloader will say so explicitly. CM7 is not one of those.

I have a T-Mobile Galaxy S2. Rooted it withe hercules tar kernel on Android 2.3. When I upgraded to JB the kernel no longer worked (couldn't root). I tried flashing Cyangoen 10.0 and 9.0 but neither wokred (Waited 20 minutes and nothing). Is there a kernel I need to flash with ODIN?
Also, looking for a good place to learn abot kernels in genral.

Kernel is causing the problem. Flash only kernel which is made for specific rom/android version. follow this if you want to flash via Odin. I recommend you to install CWM because its easy,safe and time saving.
Installed CWM Recovery, tried to flash Cyanogen 9...now it keeps rebooting back into CWM...can't access the Recovery menu. I downloaded the updated kernel. How do I get it flashed?
I was able to connect via ODIN. Can't get recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.1-hercules.tar to flash.
restart your computer log back in and use a different USB port and make sure you have all the DRIVERS for the phone plug it in flash the ODIN CWM file then you should flash an ICS ROM then flash JB to avoid any hiccups 2.3.4 is a big jump to JB might be giving you errors and you are rooted correct ?
Thank you. Yes I'm rooted an runnning smoothly with Juggernaut ROM for now. Want to change to Cyanogen 9.0. I'll flash the ODIN CWM file as you recommend. Where can I find a good ICS ROM and JB? Didn't know the jump from 2.3.4 to JB would be so big.

what do you prefer the more stocky looking approach or you into AOKP/CM if you like stock then anything from PTMR and JAMISON904 are on point and very stable if you want some options and custom stuff look into the CM/AOKP around here in the development forums since you are rooted i would download a nice ICS you wont be on it long so doesnt matter lol and then finally jump ship to JB give it time for the battery to settle in becuase there was nothin like GB as far as the battery life goes this one guy who has amazing work and dedication http://goo.im/devs/Cl3Kener anything on there will do you justice when you get to the JB stage good luck and happy flashing!!

I think there is some confusion here. A ROM is not the same thing as a kernel.
I think thats where I'm having trouble. I have an older kernel (recovery-cwm-hercules.tar) and need to upgrade it before I can flash an ICS ROM. Don't know where to find kernels for the ROMS I want to flash. I thought some ROMs came with the kernel embedded in their zipfile, but finding thats not the case. ODIN is fairly easy to use, but I don't know where to find the right kernels for ROMs like Cyanogen.

Recovery is a tool used to flash ROMs and do backups.
TWRP and CWM are recoveries.
ROMs are the operating system of the phone. They come with a kernel. The kernel is what boots the phone into the OS. You can flash a different kernel if it matches the type of ROM you are on. I hope that clears up some of the confusion.
Hello everyone. I am new to the HTC One (m7wlv) but not new to htc or rooting/flashing etc. I am s-off and my bootloader is unlocked, and i am running the stock rom rooted and debloated. I want to get a custom kernel on here, but i cant seem to get any to stick. By that i mean i have tried several, and they all flash with no errors. But when i reboot, the kernel is still stock and unchanged. I have tried all three different recoveries, ive tried regular flashing and flashing with htc dumlock. What am i missing here? Can you not use a custom kernel with a stock rooted rom? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The rom is just the ota 2.10.605.1 that i rooted and debloated.

You need an insecure Boot.img in your current rom, to allow it to be overwritten.
My Stock rom has an insecure Boot.img in it.
You could fastboot flash that Boot.Img and then flash the custom one.
You should be able to just fastboot flash the new kernel, if it is packed into a Boot.Img.(most custom kernels aren't)
If it's packed in Anykernel style, then you will have to repack it into a Boot.img from your rom, or do what I suggested above and then flash it.
Essentially you are on an unrooted, secure stock Boot.Img that will not allow for the kernel to be overwritten.
Chances are, that the modules did flash though and you probably ended up just breaking wifi...and maybe more.

i would recommend backup up user data and flash Santod debloat stock 4.3 and everything should be good from there.
