Hello all,
I received my USB adapter from Samsung today and am pleased to inform you that it works wonderfully with a USB hub. My hub has 4 slots on it and the tab was playing well with multiple USB devices being plugged in.
Really? I guess usb hub is needed to make things work? i had all kinds of issues. Mainly, not reading some usb drives, and memory reader. I just plugged the usb drive, directly into the usb adapter. The memory card reader was connected by standard usb to mini usb cable. That didn't work.
I got to try this.
Thanks.
No problem. I actually have not tried storage devices yet, only input devices. I posted on your other thread as well.
I have a feeling thumb drives may be having a problem if they are formatted in the FAT32 file system. I am going to try an NTFS drive and external hard drive and will let you know my results.
UPDATE: It appears I had it the other way around. I plugged in an NTFS drive to no avail, then formatted it to FAT32 and it worked.
FAT32 works great. NTFS is completely missing from stock kernels, it's in pershoot's "lib" extra modules archive on his kernels. However, I tried an NTFS drive using the extra module and it failed. (might require some manual mount magic???) It would take a lot more work to get FUSE working properly, and that's needed for the (vastly superior) ntfs-3g driver.
So does it work with external usb hard drives (both self powered and plug powered) of the sizes of 500GB and more?
what brand/type
what brand/type of usb hub do you have

If the hub is powered then the drive should work fine. You just can't use a usb powered drive without a power source

Ican't get mine to read my game controllers. Says something about high powered device. It won't let me read the message. When I tap it to make it bigger it just goes away. I am very frustrated. Can you get a fame controller to work? I used ps3.

PS3 controllers require a special driver. It may also require too much current since it tries to charge via USB. You'll need a powered hub if that is the case.
Gonna try my PS3 controller in a few minutes.
Edit: So far:
No excessive current errors from my PS3 controller - however mine has a fully charged battery because it's been plugged into a PS3 that has only been playing movies/videos for weeks. However button presses aren't recognized by anything. My guess is that if I dmesg I'll get an unrecognized device error. PS3 controllers are nonstandard.
However a Nyko AirFlo controller worked fine in SNES9x EX. It was semi-recognized by SNESoid - the keymap screen recognized something was being pressed, but games themselves wouldn't register presses.
Edit 2: PS3 controllers require the hid-sony kernel module to be loaded. This is included in pershoot's optional "lib" archive with his kernels. I had to hit the PS button to get it to turn on and start sending presses to the tab. No excessive current errors, but my controller was fully charged.
Thanks. But for some reason the ps3 and the x box controller worked for the xoom. I called samsung and they don't have any help for this issue yet. Can you get any external device to work for at least over fifty percent of what the adapter is meant to do? Did you get any error messages. I get high powered device connected. Then it say underneath that out could not connect. Device needs............. I cant read the rest. When I tap it to enlarge and read it disappears. Samsung can't figure out why that is happening either. Plz help.

Make sure the PS3 controller is fully charged before you connect it. If it isn't, it'll try to charge the battery and that's probably what sets off the overcurrent protection.
As to it working with the Xoom - I'd be VERY surprised if it worked with the Xoom when stock. Not so surprised about custom kernels, adding those modules is one of the first things people add, and the Xoom guys may have figured out module autoloading.
Thanks going to try now

wish i'd have read this before i bought it. i assumed it would since every other android tablet i have/had can power my external hds. pretty much makes it useless for me now as i was hoping to use it as external storage and for easy, quick file transfers. tf, xoom, and archos all work fine.

It works on a stock 3.1 build, it was one of those new features hyped at google i/o. I have both the European XOom and the Galaxy tab. The xoom copes fine with the ps3 and my other usb only non brand gamepad. The galaxy tab give me the hipower usb device error.

For SNESoid, you probably forgot to go into the other settings menu and turn on external input. The names may be off, but in addition to setting the key mappings, you have to turn on another option for it to see additional input devices, and then your gamepad will work

I had troubles reading an SD card with an old USB reader I had lying around. It was hit and miss.
Then I bought this SD card reader at Fry's for $4.99 and it works perfectly.
So, just to be clear, you are using a male A-A USB cable with one end plugged into the USB adapter on the GTab and the other end into one of the available USB ports in the hub, right?
Hey guys
So basically I have a Sony Handycam DCR-HC19E camcorder, and was wondering if i plugged it into my galaxy tab using the samsung usb adapter thing, will it recognise it and allow me to take and transfer files to and from the tab?
As i want to upload some videos to youtube but it wont work on my computer?
So im basically asking if anybody has got mass storage access to devices they have plugged into the tab 10.1
Thanks in advance for any help
Adam
I have a Sony dcr-sr100. It mounts to my galaxy tab 10.1 on stock firmware.
I have found that " high" powered USB devices are rejected by this tab, which is annoying. But i have found that how you connect the devices matter also.
E.g. if the adaptor is plugged in then i use my USB drive to the adapter is does not work.
If my USB drive is plugged into the adapter then into the tab it usually works, if not pull out and try again right away.
If you can get a powered USB hub, this will help for connecting more devices. Generic keyboard & mice work fine ( if not " high" powered)
USB mass storage otg app in the market will help to mount more drives at once and enable access to NTFS formatted drives which are not supported on the stock firmware.

This is the one I got.

I don't see much point paying more than this.
Also the " card reader" versions are designed to only mount one card at a time since that is how the stock device handles otg. But if you already have USB card reader your happy with, it can be used with USB mass storage OTG app from the market. ( Which also adds NTFS support).

Sprite cheers. I may just get a 3 pound one off Amazon, then see if it works

I got the corded version, as I thought it was more risky using the "Block" style one that might break the connector 30pin if it was knocked too hard.
There is rick of the corded version breaking on the cable, but it is a cheap replacement fix.

Search the threads, derp.
Searching the threads won't help. This information is scattered all over the place making search pretty much impossible. The ridiculously-obselete forum format doesn't help, either.
I did get mounting to work with the Stickmount app from the market. The multiple partitions on my external drive supposedly mount under /sdcard/usbstorage but they show as empty in any file managers.
Edit: Based on Stickmount's info the reason the drives show up empty is more than likely because I'm using an adapter instead of a cable. I'll update when my cable comes in the mail.

+1 FPSE + ps3 controller = ultimate time killer lol
plus with all this otg stuff would we be able to plug in cams? for possible skype use? or google talk video chat. even better!
otg
hi all iv'e posted a bit about my knowledge of otg in different threads and thought id post what i know/figured out so far in this thread.
please correct me if you know any different.
the only difference between a usb cable & a otg cable/adapter is that the otg has pin 5 joined to pin 4 (this lets your kindle activate otg host mode). unfortunately most cables only have 4 cables attached (even if pin 5 is present in the connector) .
you can find an app called electrodroid in the market to see usb pin-out.
usb controller seems to be a good app to see which devices connect ok.
stick mount works well for me to mount usb drive.
tip's
download stickmount app, open and allow permission
turn off kindle & plug in otg cable connected to a powered hub (mine has a switch on the side, "bus or self", i set it on self) insert flash drive into hub.
then power on kindle when loaded the app stickmount should auto connect your flashdrive (there should be a popup) if not open up stickmount app and hit connect.
then you should see the popup.
open root explorer and goto sdcard you should see usb storage in there (for some reason on my 1st attempt to open root explorer it always shows as empty, just exit the reopen R/E).
?if you unplug otg cable without going into stickmount and disconnecting sometimes you can't remount without a reboot?
a mouse and keyboard should just work but iv'e also found that they also need to be inserted before booting up. my mac keyboard doesn't work at all but my mouse/keyboard combo ie. one dongle which both keyboard and mouse came with works fine
still playing with bluetooth. i can see it in usb controller app but can't switch it on yet, i think this is something hash is aware of and it needs something tweeking in the kernel.
everything seems to need the extra power of a powered hub. i did have my mouse working on its own once or twice but most of the time it needs powered hub.
here's a pic of my setup. hope this helps someone get it working as it's awesome.

I purchased USB otg cable -- ebay item #280820891599.
Installed stickmount and usb controller apps. Hash's Kernel #8. My generic 2gb USB stick is hot-pluggable, mounts at /sdcard/usbStorage/sda.
USB Controller indicates that my generic BT USB plugs (i have two of them) are "Connected USB devices" with the address 0001:0a12. So the system recognizes them, but what to do next?
i think i'm right in saying that hash needs to tweak the bt modules to allow us to activate it, mine shows the same but there is no way to toggle bluetooth yet.

Offtopic, but in regards to the bluetooth PS3 controller. I was searching but I couldn't find any guides on how to get the pair code for the device. Do you have to do it within Linux or can it be done within Windows?

Hy,
Same here, unable to mount usb stick using USB OTG Cable without having external hub.

Anyone here can give a clue please ?
Thanks a lot
picked up a six foot HDMI cable today from walmart. (belkin)
first time seeing my phone plugged into a HD tv... and WOW! super awesome.
I have a few questions for those who use this feature a lot.
1. I see that I can add apps and shortcuts to the tv launcher app..... am i able to remove them? or remove the ones that are already there... haven't yet found a way to do so?
2. Anyone able to stream from SMB share using XBMC? i'm unable to get it to connect even though i have the user/pwd and ip addy correct. p.s. my share shows up and is accessible via ES file Explorer and Connected Devices.
3. I'm using DICE player to play my downloaded torrents on my pc via my ION .... now on my htc flyer... i have no problems viewing these files.. but on my ION sometimes the video will start and play for about a minute and then DICE player just crash/disappear and take me back to ES file explorer anyone else with this issue? if so find any workarounds?
4. in Tv Launcher app there is an icon to connect to facebook mobile... i clicked this the first time and it brought me to my facebook page but with notifications from people not in my friends list.. i checked on the computer and these pokes/notifications weren't ever there on my computer or in my notifications...<---this really freaked me out a bit...
5. anyone got the PS3 controller to connect to their ION? if so... gotta list of games it works with?
a. also anyone able to use the remote control ok to control the ION? my universal remote for my TV doesn't seem compatible...if u got it to work what kind of remote are you using?
excited to have a phone capable of HDMI out.. looks AWESOME!
thanks for any info in advance
1. I'll have to try mine again to tell you how to remove icons
5. Yes I've used the PS3 remote via USB. Dead trigger, shadow gun, reckless racing 2 work with the controller. If you root and use the sixxaxis controller app you can use any game pretty mmuch and use the controller over Bluetooth.
Used a couple Sony remotes and a Samsung remote with no issues. My cheap dynex TV remote wouldn't work.

Yeh with the dock I didn't need to use any other app for games that support gamepads. With no dock you will need a USB adapter to plug it directly in or root to use the controller app.

I've been searching around but can't find a definitive answer. I'm interested in purchasing a FireTV, but I need something that can play files (mkv's mostly) locally via USB thumb drives (a la WD TV Live). I know I can set up a Plex server on my machine and stream files over my wifi network but would prefer the aforementioned method. Is this a possibility with Amazon's FireTV? My audio receiver will decode DTS audio, so I'm not concerned about it processing audio.
Any help/explanation(s) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Not available yet. USB doesn't work for drives only devices like mice, keyboards, controllers. To get it working will most likely require root and changes.

like krelvinaz mentioned, no usb storage option yet, for me my solution was to install xmbc on the fire tv, the usb thumb conected to the USB port of my router, that way i add or remove content of the usb drive from my imac, work flawless for me.
