I am new to the whole android seen and I am having trouble figuring out how to flash a rom. I want to put http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1527041 this rom on my epic 4g and currently have calkulins stock rooted fb17 rom installed. can anyone tell me how to flash it or point me in the right direction of some instructions. My last smartphone was a htc touch pro, things were a lot easier back in the winmo days.
Recommended Steps
Do you have CWM installed already?
Either way:
1) Use ODIN to flash a Gingerbread ROM such as EL26.
1a) If you don't have CWM installed you'll want to flash it now. This can also be done by ODIN. If you have installed, simply go to recovery after reboot.
2) Flash the ROM you specified.
You can find more on how to do this safely in the following link:
How Not To Brick Your E4GT
If I may make a suggestion: You said you are new to Android. You may want to just stay with ODIN tars for now, at least you become a little more familiar and comfortable with the phone. There is a FC07+Rooted .tar file for ODIN if you would rather try that instead. If you choose to go with a rom that packs CWM please make sure you read that link so you at least are aware of what is going on and how to try and minimize your risk.
Good luck!

I searched this place for like 4 hours today, and I can't find any answers. I am trying to install a different rom onto my phone. I used odin to give me super user. I have clockworkmod and all the premium apps, and the version is 5.0.0.6 (because I read on different threads that I should try using an older version, but this is still a newer version).
I have the samsung epic 4g touch, and I already had to revert back (I didn't back up - couldn't if I tried because cwm won't let me) to the factory settings. Basically I am stuck trying to get cwm to work. It just wont go into recovery mode. It keeps sending me to the default android recovery. I am at a total loss. Right now I am trying to download cyanogenmod to see if that will help me, but it probably has nothing to do with what I am trying to accomplish.
I have been watching videos all weekend trying to get this to work, and am pretty much stuck on the very second step of all of them, which is to boot into recovery mode. The latest thread I am following is here at the site "/showthread.php?t=1514665". Still stuck on the second part.
I don't want to be babied through it, but for some reason I can't get cwm to work properly.
I recommend sfhub's one root in the developer forum. It will add a kernel with cwm to your phone. Very easy, just follow his directions.
I also use all of his one-click Odin files to install a rooted rom. He does excellent work and they are all in the developer section.
It sounds like cwm really isn't installed.

Don't use the CWM. It does not work on ICS and may cause the phone bricked.
Use the Rogue kernel or odin.
For more information, check my thread in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552407

This is what you're talking about right?
Assuming you don't care about the yellow triangle nor the odin flash count (ie you have a jig to reset, will use the triangle away software, or just don't care) the quickest way to restore to a safe ROM with CWM is to use the special pre-rooted EL26+CWM Odin OneClick.
It is available in #A2 of the 2nd post in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416477
If you do care about the yellow triangle, then just follow the directions in the 1st post. Basically there is one extra step that takes around a minute, but it won't trigger the yellow triangle nor will it increase the ODIN flash count.

I think this was the first guide I followed when I rooted my phone. However, it doesn't do anything for me. CWM still doesn't work. I can't flash any new roms on there.

If you followed the first post, did you read the section at the end (of the first post) that says if you want CWM, to use the Auto Root package and choose Option C? Auto Root package is available here (and in my signature):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
I only added the special pre-rooted EL26 ODIN OneClick with El26+CWM today so while it is possible you used it, probably less likely.
The reason I haven't included CWM in the past is because if you ODIN flash a kernel that isn't signed by Samsung you trigger the yellow triangle and increase the ODIN flash count. It wasn't that much effort (about an extra minute) to use the Auto Root packaged to install CWM after installing the pre-rooted ODIN OneClick.
However with the advent of the ICS kernels and the /data partition bricking people have encountered when doing wipes/restores, folks have been reverting back to GB-based CWM to do all their ROM flashes so I created packages with CWM built-in to save people a step.

I am kind of a retard when it comes to phones, but from what I read on all your posts, I can't see where any of that will help me install an ics rom, or any other rom. I can't seem to get CWM to work, and I can't even get CM to install or root or whatever through any means.
I don't want to brick my phone, but at the same time I don't want to have to charge my phone twice or more a day. This is my first smart phone, and after a 3 hour phone conversation, the battery was dying (and I took it off the charger from a full charge when I started dialing), so something has to give. This is a clean phone too. I didn't have anything but the default apps.
I'm really not trying to be an ahole here, really... But maybe you shouldn't be attempting this? Sfhub could not have made it easier for us. If you find his instructions difficult, maybe you should stay stock. Good luck

Do you want Samsung stock ICS or did you want AOKP or CM9, the procedures are different.
Up until now I've just been addressing the topic of your post, which is CWM is not working.
It would be much easier to help you if you went through the instructions and posted what step didn't work. Just saying you "read (on) all posts" is too general to be of any use.
CWM Rogue Recovery doesn't seem to be sticking on my E4GT. Flashed CM9 Alpha 3 from stock rooted rom. When Alpha 4 was released, I tried to boot into CWM Recovery and ended up with stock recovery. Ended up having to odin back to stock and start over to get Alpha 4 running. Same problem now that Alpha 5 is out there, tried to boot into CWM Rogue Recovery and get stock recovery.
Doing a search shows that this seems to occur on other phones. They've resolved it by deleting a boot recovery file with Root Explorer. I was just hoping to confirm with someone that this method will work on the E4GT and the name and location of the file that needs to be deleted.
I'm assuming I'll have to odin back to stock and start the process over again and delete that file once I load up CWM Rogue Recovery again?
Thanks for the help.
CM9 comes with stock recovery. Look up EL26 kernel and learn to use it. Its your best friend for flashing on this phone. Also read up a little more on CM9 as it explains this.
This method will not work. With our phone, recovery has to be packed into the kernel, its not separate from other partitions like it is on other phones. This is why whenever you flash a new rom, your current recovery is replaced by the new roms packed in recovery. The reason its stock Android recovery is because of the bricking issue we've been having in ICS custom recovery so devs aren't including it into the kernel<rom.
So when you need CWM, flash the directboot CWM under the tools page in the epic4g touch CM blog spot website. You Odin that and it takes you straight to a sage recovery where you can flash the alpha 5 update. Understand?

Thank you both for pointing me in the right direction. I realized that I would have to go back to the EL26 to flash new roms. I didn't realize that I would have to do that to flash over an existing rom with an update. Thanks for setting me straight.
hmmm....interesting. The CM9 instruction page does not mention that you need to Odin the DirectBoot CWM when upgrading. I can see why a lot of people are skipping that step.
Thanks for the heads up, I am going to upgrade to alpha 5 after work. I'll make sure to Odin the DirectBoot CWM kernel first.

It is a new kernel modification that did not exist a couple weeks ago. The EL26 CWM kernel itself has been around since the end of last year. Being completely optional to use the new modded one you probably wont find it in instructions. I for example will never use it but others will find it easier because they do not understand why the phone goes into bootloops.
I just upgraded my E4GT Sprint from GB to ICS using the oneclick installer. I am trying to install the CODENAME rom from CWM but havng issues getting CWM installed. I used the the E4GT auto but FE16 isnt listed so i tried FE15 but it wont load into CWM. So i tried this link "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390393" and flashed from ODIN and it goes into CWM but before it boots it says my phone is a gt-i9100 and has a ! on the bottom. It appears to boot though so i booted back into CWM and tried to flash the ZIP for CODENAME and the gapps file and it jsut gets stuck at the boot screen with the transformer logo. I cant get into CWM after that point and have to ODIN back to ICS. I am on ICS now and its working fine. Does anyone have any instructions on getting CWM installed and the codename rom from a fresh odin ICS install?

You really should read more before hopping around like that without checking. Real risk for a brick here.
-Flash EL26 stock CWM kernel via the PDA option in ODIN/Mobile ODIN
-When phone begins reboot, Hold Power + Volume up until boots into recovery.
-Wipe data/factory, cache and dalvik cache
-Flash ROM
-Flash Gapps
-Reboot
Those are the instructions right from the developer's thread. This is an AOSP rom and it sounds like you're trying to install TW kernels.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662295
This is the kernel repository. It links to each kernel where you can read further and find out if they are safe for flashing things.
Seems like you've done a bunch of stuff. But you really should do a whole bunch of reading first or you will brick your phone.
My suggestion would be to use sfhub's one-click http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705730 to get to a fully stock rooted device. Then use his autoroot package http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728 to add CWM (the lates in the package is FF11+CWM Agat I believe) then you can add Agat's latest kernel with CWM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721065
But I would be very careful when flashing ANY ROM; use the developers prefered method. Some recommend using EL26 CWM. Some a different recovery or procedure. Be especially careful with CM9 and AOKP builds to follow the directions there.
Good luck
So while i was waiting for a response i just went back to the stock GB using the one click install. I then used the autoroot package to install CWM and then restored my nandroid backup before i made in the very beginning. So my phone is back to a perfect state with GB and CWM installed. Can i just flash the ROM from CWM as is then? For some reason i thought it had to be "converted" to ICS and thats what started this whole mess. Things have changed since my old Evo
I just noticed that im running EL29 not 26...does that matter? When i try to flash that CMW EL26 stock root is when it gave me that gt-i9100 on boot and the ! at the bottom. Using the autoroot and choosing the EL29 Rogue is the only way i got it installed.

My friend some good suggestions above your post. Give yourself a day or two and do some reading prior to flashing. This way you may not end up at Sprint making up stories about why your phone wont boot up.
Let me just echo what everybody else has said, you're gotta read more. A lot more! If you're one goal is to get CNA in your phone I would recommend reading all of the very first post on that thread. They give step by step instructions.
If you need CWM there are several options to get it on your phone. Both sfhub and I have put together several one-click and automated options to get it on your phone.
One thing that hasn't been suggested yet but I would strongly encourage you to do is to read the "How Not To Brick Your E4GT" thread. It's sticked in the General section.
Good luck!
Two more things.
1) If you're going to ask for help give it a few minutes before trying something new. It takes people a minute to reply. Sometimes waiting that extra minute or two is all you need to be saved from bricking.
2) Don't be afraid to hit your thanks button for everyone who has offered advice already. I got them once for you but it might not hurt to do it again.
OK, I may get yelled at for asking about this considering the number of Wikis and threads out there, but I wanted to be sure: are there instructions for ClockworkMod Recovery installation specifically for the Boost Mobile version of the SPH-D710, which ships *with* ICS? Most of the tutorials I've seen ask you to use Odin to install a gingerbread rooted kernel, if I remember correctly, which I imagine will blow up in my face if I try to install it on a stock ICS installation. The eventual goal here is to get a CyanogenMod 10 nightly installed.
Thanks!
Okay, after some additional googling, I found this:
HXXP://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-boost-mobile-all-things-root/619169-boost-sgs2-fh29-root-achieved.html[/url]
(apparently I can't post links yet)
The instructions start off as a "how to root" guide, but later the author discusses additional steps to CM10. Will try it out soon, unless anyone has a more current guide available.
I had my phone on stock ota ff18 then used Odin on PC to flash on chris41g safe el26 with cwm. Then flashed on from there.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Just do this,
1. Download the CM10 test build/ROM (No official nightlies, just test builds) of your choice. Don't forget the gapps! Transfer the files to you sdcard.
2. Download EL26 stock with CWM on your pc. (Search it, easy to find).
3. Download Odin is you don't have it. Open odin, press the "PDA" slot, and select the EL26 kernel.
4. Put phone into download mode and Connect the usb from your pc to phone. Lastly, click start on odin to flash the EL26 kernel.
5. Once the kernel is flash, the phone will not boot into the ICS ROM of course. Boot phone into recovery.
6 Clear data, cache, and dalvik cache. After, Select install zip, select zip from SDcard, choose the CM10 or ROM of your choice, let it flash. Then select the gapps zip to flash. (Press, VOL down, VOL up, and VOL down. this should enable the option to press power button for selections.)
This are the steps I suggest to use because EL26 is the safest kernel we suggest to use when flashing any AOSP, AOKP, and any ROM in general. If you want to be on the safe side.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the detailed instructions! I will try it out this week at some point.
Or you can use

Ilike your applications thank you
I apologize up front if this is posted in the wrong section.
The threads I have been reading have all come from this area.
I have a BLU Studio HD 651u that is rooted.
Somewhere along the way of rooting and tweaking and what not, I managed to make a terrible mess of things with my phone.
I have a backup copy of the Stock rom for my device, and what I would like to do is install a custom recovery, then completely wipe my phone. COMPLETELY! (if that's possible), then, flash the stock rom back onto it.
I am hoping that flashing the stock rom doesn't 'unroot' my phone. I would like to keep that. It was quite an ordeal getting it rooted to begin with, and I believe the cause of some of the problems I am having.
The Stock rom files I have are not a zip file, so I would need guidance on that procedure as well.
I found links to the stock rom from the g+ pages for my device. There were 2 links. The one contains rom files for all the BLU devices, but the second link provided I'm not sure I even need.
If someone would care to take a look, here's what I'm talking about. My device has MT6585
https://mega.co.nz/#F!W9AUGAQR!a6xLckX4_CqABLKUrh8iYA
https://mega.co.nz/#F!TplRURRI!LyAuAlNIBND_AOgu3bx6tQ
And the recovery tutorial I found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2668712
I am pretty much a complete noob. I only have experience with one Android device, a Kindle Fire 1st gen. that I was able to root, but not without seeking help from the fine folks at this website.
I am hoping to strike luck again???...
I don't know if I should try installing the stock rom and then try to install a recovery or should I attempt to install the recovery first and then install the rom?
And at which point should I attempt to erase EVERYTHING on the phone?
I did look for a section on XDA for my device, but, there isn't one I could find, and like I said, the recovery tutorial was found in this sexction so I am hoping not to offend..
Any help/input/comments or suggestions is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
This link --> https://mega.co.nz/#F!TplRURRI!LyAuAlNIBND_AOgu3bx6tQ is a public folder for BLU stock roms, just go to the folder STUDIO SERIES -> Right click in this folder -> STUDIO 6HD D651U and select: Download as ZIP
In this folder -> https://mega.co.nz/#F!W9AUGAQR!a6xLckX4_CqABLKUrh8iYA, download both files and follow this guide to install the driver and flash the rom,
I recommend to hard reset the phone before or after flash a ROM, even if you dont hard reset you will not have root
After flash the stock rom you can root and install custom recovery
The only way to format the phone it's when you can't install stock roms and SP Flash Tool keep showing errors, so format the phone and try again, it should solve (in some cases) some SPFT errors
