Question about unrooting. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Alright quick story to get you were I am. Seens I got my sgs2 I rooted it and flash a ROM that day. I never did see how this phone is stock or even useed it to compare it to other roms etc.. So I unrooted back to 2.3.5 because I figured that was my stock phone but I really don't know. Ether way the question is shouldn't my phone tell me I have a update for 2.3.6? I have been stock for 12hrs I just thought it would tell me I have a update.

You should, but it would be faster probably to just flash it...

I know it would be faster to do it that way. I just want to make make sure this phone is back to stock. Samsung Kia says there is no update. I am starting to think I am just not a stock phone.
Android version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: T989UVKL1
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Build number: Gingerbread.UVKID
now I think this might not be 100% stock and thats my problem. The reason I am asking this is I am going to be sending a phone back and just wanted to make sure it is a close as it can be stock.

Did you odin it back to stock or did you use cwm to flash it back to stock?

Used Odin to flash 2.3.6 ( was stuck with boot loader ), Then flashed in 2.3.5. Why what was the difference?

was just wondering if you did odin or CWM... odin is more true to going back to stock.. if you use cwm you would have to flash stock recovery, kernel, rom, and modem.
but since you're just sending it in for warranty exchange. 2.3.5 should be fine. I sent mine in while it was still deodexed. You can always try to odin 2.3.6 again, try a different port.

Alright thank you very much.
What does deodexed mean? After doing more resreach I found out that that is the 2.3.5 that I am useing as well.
Thank you all with out saying much of anything about my issue you all did help figure this out. For the next person that may be trying to unroot there phone back to stock and wondering why they are not getting a 2.3.6 update this is why.
-This is what I had
Android version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: T989UVKL1

This is stock 2.3.6

Android version: 2.3.5

My old 2.3.5 was a cross between 2.3.5 and 2.3.6 so I wasn't getting the updates because my phone it was running 2.3.6 Thanks to the baseband.

Update only offered through the kies app though not OTA and may take app little bit to auto detect you can manually start it from tools menu after phone plugged in and drivers finish install.
You have to copy superuser zip and flash on any ROM that is not pre rooted before you get super user and full function.

Please use my advice as advice I am not responsible for what you choose to do with your personal device in any way.
You need to use a stock recovery image and flash with Odin at least
use your original nandroid backup from right before you installed your ROM and right after you rooted
but if you want things like custom install count reset use unroot package (easy Google) as I am unsure if original nandroid would reset this (but most likely will as they are full partition images)
They usually want to see stock recovery menu and ROM and don't normally dig deeper from mine and others experiences.

He did check through kies, but there was no update most likely because his baseband was still kl1

He Odin the stock ROM which includes stock recovery and kernel also. not sure why his baseband didn't change... bad flash? who knows.
If you restore your nandroid that was backed up after you rooted, you would still have superuser install you would want to remove that too.
But yeah he doesn't need to do any of this because he Odin the factory stock ROM that includes everything stock.

Ok, since I'm having such a good day I will help you out. Usually I would just tell you to search some more.
Step One .- Flash Stock KERNEL with CWM. Which is here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2510030/kernel-stock.zip
Step Two .- Flash Unrooted Rom with CWM. Which is here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2510030/SGH-T989-UnRoot_ROM_Zedomax.zip
And Last..
Step Three .- Odin Stock Recovery. Which is here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2510030/SGH-T989-Stock-Recovery.tar
You should be fully STOCK now. Follow the steps and don't skip any.
Good luck.....
Flash this rom thru cwn, it restores back to stock unrooted, and installs the stock recovery.

I just flashed this since i am getting a warranty exchange and everything is back to stock unrooted. Except for the kernel, make sure you flash the stock kernal first

From what i've heard, none of these solutions will get you back T989UVKL1 true stock. Both of the above posts will put the phone back to and 'older' unrooted version of stock T989UVKID.
I guess if needing to return the phone back to T-Mobile, only assuming that's what you want, it should work, however if you purchased the phone (like me) with the upgraded firmware pre installed, and you wanted to "wipe the slate clean" and start fresh with prue pre installed updated stock - the above 2 posts won't do it.

Yes but if you go back to T989UVKID shouldn't it give you the OTA update?
That should do the trick

Uhrrr.., status error 7. What method are you trying to update? There are so many ways to manually update...What do you meen with "change the softkey". What softkey and what did you change and what has that got to do with updating? Afraid no one will be able to help you if you give so little info...
You can't update with the ota because you changes the softkeys. Find a stock systemUI.apk. for 4.0.2 and push that to /system /app. Then it should flash correctly. If not, I'm afraid you'll have to flash the stock images which require a wipe.

What he said. Unless the phone is 100% stock with JUST ROOT.. it will never work.
I honestly don't know why people want to mod their phone and then keep their phone ROM stock and expect to get OTAs. If you want to customize your phone then just fully customize it, dont half-customize it.
New ROMs are already on 4.0.4.

May be because we want some degree of customization but have other things to do in life then wiping everthing and starting from scratch everytime a custom rom gets a major update or go from one rom to an other...
Anyway i also get that error flashing with CW. I did do things with my phone but consider it being stock + root + unlocked bootloader...
More hints on how to fix this and be able to upgrade?
Also where can i get the stock file mentioned?
Thx!
What radio are you on? You need the xxkk6 and start with her 4.0.2 yakju stock rom.

I found a system.img file in the original rom If I flash it via gnexroottolkit will it wipe the phone?

if you really want to update just download either the ODIN tar thats in this forum or go to rootz and download the flashable zip that whitheawkx made.
Or you can download Samsung Kies (not kies air, actual kies) as you will need it on the 11th for the ICS update.
Edit: nvm somehow missed you saying rooted

Nvm about Kies since you are rooted. Maintenance update will unroot you anyways youll have to use Odin to flash it then unroot unless you want to flash it and stay unrooted and stock until the 11th for ICS and yes kies will ask you to update on the 11th after plugging your phone in.

Ok,,,,I guess I should go back to unrooted and stock till the 11th.
If I go back to unrooted and stock, will I loose all my data......and is there a FAQ or step my step to go back to stock
or when I get this update will this unroot me and just wait till the the 11th.
I would like to back to stock but keep all my data....how do I do this...I see outdated FAQ's, etc....anyinformation will be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if you will lose your data or not, most likely on the 11th you will anyways since it's an OS update. The maintenance update didn't wipe my data but did unroot me. But thats because I was on stock just rooted.

OK...well ihave all my data backed up....so I could just sit back and relax and let T-MO do all the updates and when done then I can unroot again.....and add what Mod I want....does this sound correct?

yes kies resets your phone to stock as in out-of the-box if u choose to go back to stock i did it to my SGSII in order to get the UVLDE and lose everything... good thing i made a backup on my PC but remember that when u flash a new rom even a stock it wipes your data thats why is always recommended to make a nandroid backup. now im just sitting here... waiting for my ICS... no root till then...
edit: that is if you really dont want to use odin wich is recommended. check here for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332103 . good luck

Nandroid is built into clockworkmod recovery. It backs up your entire partition so it's basically like having a full backup image of everything, apps, ROM, data, everything the way it is. If you just want apps backed up, and not your entire phone, sick with titanium.

I was replying to the OP whom said he was on stock rooted. I was also running stock rooted with bloat frozen. I just unfreezed, delete dalvic/cache and rebooted. Then flashed via kies, rerooted, then refroze the bloat. It's probably different/cause problems if you are running a custom ROM prior to upgrading via kies. Hope this info helps...

Getting error on new update LG8

I got the little pop up that there was an update so I installed it and it said the phone was going to boot in 6 seconds or whatever, after that the phone booted into CWM and it said it failed install. Now every time I check for an update it says there's no update right now. Am I the only one with this problem? How do I fix it? Is it because I'm rooted? I'm on the stock rom by the way.

you don't need to flash the modem if you don't want to. Although I think (opinion only, and they vary between user) LG8 is a very good modem right now.
Once you flash modem, you will keep it until you revert or flash a newer modem or a rom specifically tells you it also provides it.

So flash the DeOdex version via CWR.
Then flash the Modem.zip via CWR.
Then use Odin and flash "Other Parts" .tar file and that's it?
Will there be any differentiation between going this route versus unrooting -> OTA update -> re-rooting?
The way I flash I got the legit update and flash with custom recovery and before the reboot flash the team win root file and ur done then reboot and ur done u have the hole update and firmware and radio and rooted and u keep your custom recovery

Android system update 4.0.4

I've got the notification for me to update to 4.0.4 popping up every time I use my phone. I was wondering how I could possibly stop the prompts from occurring, or if there'd be an easy way to revert my phone to fully stock...without me having a backup. I've got a custom ROM installed (Blazer v4.0), so I'm guessing the answer is a no, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.
My current system info for reference:
Android version 2.3.6
Baseband version S710.10 S.EL29
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EL29-CL852097
In the event that I'm not able to restore it to stock, any info on how I can update my android through a custom ROM or something would be awesome, and of course ROM suggestions would be wonderful.
Thank you all so much for your time.

It's funny that you posted this question because I was just about to do the same too. I just flashed my phone to Blazer's 4.1 GB rom and just got the system update popup 10 minutes ago. Same setup only my modem is FI03. I had downloaded this zip file "Disable.OTA.Updates.zip" but wasn't sure if it could be used on a GB rom (downloaded it for Blazer's ICS rom, coincidentally).
I was thinking of nandroiding and then trying it out, but figure checking XDA first to be certain would a better decision.

If you want to revert back to stock, just check the android development forum. there are many posts by rwilco with different versions of stock TouchWiz. You might need to go back a bit to find GB.
the one-click files are about as easy as it gets for flashing.
I started off flashing these stock rooted updates instead of waiting for the OTA updates and haven't had an update notification since.
of course I'm on CM10 JB nights now, but still no notifications...
p.s. backups are not required, just recommended.
Just flashed the disable.ota.update zip. Phone booted up fine.
You can also just accept the update. It won't work and your phone with freeze but after pulling the battery the annoying ota is gone. I think it may come back in about a week.

Yeah, so it hasn't worked. Still getting the ota update prompt, still running Blazer v4.0 for some reason. Any ideas?
Just accept the update. It will go away and you should still have your Rom.

I don't want the ROM dude. If I still wanted it I wouldn't have posted this question. Besides, that only fixes the problem momentarily. My question now is why the heck didn't the flash work?

You need to flash an actual rom. But before you do that backup anything important and then use calkulins format all before you flash whatever rom. If you don't wipe some stuff might be broken or killing your battery. Changing the kernel won't change your rom.

So, I need to flash a ROM. What about after that? How do I get from 2.3.6 to 4.0.4? Any specific ROM you would recommend for this quick hop?
