[Q] Deleting Car Mode Noob Question - HTC Wildfire S

Hello !
I would like to disable/delete car mode in my rooted wildfire s.
Have searched and searched but cant find an answer. Where is the car mode program as I cant find it in file manager ?
The no dock apps dont affect it. It will go into car mode whether plugged in or not, also most calls default to speaker phone.
Any help will be very appreciated
Steve

Delete it using titanium backup.

Thanks but the problem is the file/program isnt called car mode so I cant find out what to delete.
I have Titanium Backup already so that wont be a problem when I find the file name.

You will see the steering wheel icon in titanium then just uninstall it.
You could even make a backup of it, if your worried.

Im sorry but I cant see it

Hold on and I'll see what the apk is called.
Edit: right I have checked the Google apps flashable zip and it should be called 'CarHomeGoogle.apk'
Use a file explorer and navigate to system/app folder and see if its there.

Still cant find it.
Im really sorry but I think it must be hidden within something else. But what ??

What rom are you using?

Android Version 2.3.5

Is it unbranded or network branded?
I have never seen car home pre installed on a stock rom before.

Its a vodafone thats been unbranded.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help to you.
My guess is that its probably not Google car mode but instead bloatware of some kind.
If you give me a list of your apps from looking in titanium, I'll compare them to mine and let you know what's safe to remove.
Even a couple of screenshots showing your apps in titanium will do.
If you take me up on this, I would recommend you make a nandroid backup first.

Thanks for all your help.
Last night I found an app called Dock Nothingness which (fingers crossed) seems to control car mode 95% of the time. I'll see how it goes for now.

Good job, glad you found the culprit.

Bloody car mode
I have the same issue, a simple Google reveals its quite common but no real solution, the Do nothingness did not work for me, neither did rooting, custom ROm, deleting the carmode file with Root App Delete.
Any ideas, UK no branded handset.
I suspect this could also be a hardware (pins crossing issue)

Apparantly (according to HTC) the car mode is embedded in Navigation. So if you dont need this, delete it.
Worked for me.
Steve

Thanks, using Root App Delete or Titanium Backup I cannot find the Navigation app to delete it, any suggestions ...

Wtf..... Use titanium backup, scroll down the list of apps. It's called car home.
Sent from my HTC_A510c using Tapatalk 2

WTF - its not there, Navigation, Car Mode anything called Car. I decided to delete Google Maps, etc... which removed Navigation from the apps, but guess what I still get car mode.
I found if I create a shortcut to Car Dock settings I can access a setting that say Car Dock (Automatic), but its greyed out and I cannot change it.

I know it's a stupid question but, are you rooted?

[Q] Transitioning from Palm Pre to Evo 4G

Posted in androidcentral and went no where this seems to be a better site for this sort of thing. Transitioning from the Palm Pre Sprint to the Evo. Saw some Pre to / Evo4G threads but none have the info I need. Couple of questions hopefully someone can answer. I already rooted the EVO with the AC rom also nandroid with cm6 (the Pre basically comes already rooted just enter konami code and reboot). Hopefully these answers can help others later on too.
It allows to to make/end calls, send sms, open apps, reboot, change wallpaper, turn GPS on and off, get phone coordinates, turn leds/vibrator on. In short basically every function the phone does can be triggered remotely via ssh.
Nothing that will let you mess with people on command line if your phone is lost or stolen but lookout and prey are good apps for locating your phone.
OpenSSH server?
There is an app in the market but the lack of libraries, optware and physicial keyboard really make this a bad phone to use the command line in. Tunneling in or out is also a lost cause a vpn would be the best bet for this.
DDNS?
There is an app which is pretty nice but haven't found a good http server like the Pre so there is really no need for it.
Http server? My pre had a webserver with php. When I went to a page the Pre called its location and displayed a google maps page. I would prefer if theres no app so if I lose my phone theres nothing that can be easily uninstalled or turned off. Also good for hosting files locally.
Haven't found a replacement for this.
You can do Ubuntu chroot on the Evo but with no xserver it lags and is not a good experience.
Is there a third party app for homebrew mods like preware or cydia? Android market is more open than apple or palms so every app you can find there no alternative needed. Although sometimes you can find apks in threads for apps that are not in the market yet just put them in your sd card and browse with a file manager to install these.
Is there a way to download your sms database file like the iphone or pre ? Haven't found out where they are saved but plenty of apps to backup texts to either sd or gmail so no need to go searching for them.
I do have the script that installs optware on the Pre I tried doing the commands manually but failed. Haven't given up yet just havent had time since after midterms it will be on top of the list. Is there anyone with alot of experience with android that might also want to try this. It is a shell (.sh) script but I changed the extension to txt so I could upload it.

[Q] HELP - Phone Not Turning On

Hey guys,
I apologize for the long post - I tried to provide as much detail as possible.
So over a month ago, my phone randomly turned itself off. Then I noticed that it kept trying to turn back on again - it was going into a loop of loading up to the 'Samsung Galaxy S III' boot screen before turning off and so on. Upon looking it up, I noticed that people with the same issue attributed it to the power button getting jammed (Makes sense as it's hit numerous times per day). The advice to hit the power button on an edge to unjam it worked fine for me. My phone was back up and running.
More recently, it had gotten into the habit of randomly turning off and restarting - I attributed it to a software glitch and did not think much of it. Yesterday, it turned itself off. When I tried to turn it on, it gave me no response. I took out the battery and put it back on and noticed that without me hitting the power button, it would turn itself on and load up to the 'Samsung Galaxy S III' boot screen before going to a black screen (Not even the blue LED or Samsung logo came on that usually follows the initial boot screen). Taking out and putting the battery numerous times gave me the same result. The difference from the first time is that now it's silent after turning to a black screen indicating that it was still on. Initially, I thought it was the same problem as before - a jam on the power button. But trying what I tried last time has not worked. My phone is completely useless. Even hooking it up to a micro-usb charger did not change anything. The closest problem and potential solution can be found by googling "Samsung Galaxy S3 not booting up, keeps restarting showing ”Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-19300” black screen" (I cannot post the link as a new user). Upon taking the suggestion from that webpage of running 'adb logcat', I realized that my PC is not even recognizing that my phone is connected as of course it is incapable of booting up. I've tried entering recovery mode - it gives me the blue "entering recovery mode..." text before turning into a black screen.
I rooted it a while back and have had no issues - I only rooted it in order to get rid of the bloatware that was starting to affect the performance. I have not tried flashing any ROMs at all - I'm still running stock albeit rooted.
I care more about getting the data out of the phone (that is not synced to anything such as some crucial text messages..etc) than the actual phone's status. Please if anyone could help me that, it would be really appreciated! Thank you in advance!
Well, your not gonna get anything until you can power up and stay that way.
It sounds like the power button. Just because attempts to unjam it this time don't work, doesn't mean it's not the source this time. The tapping it to free it up is temporary at best and for most people it doesn't help. Best I can say is either open it up and attempt a true fix yourself (replace the button, or if lucky reseat it), or take it to a repair shop.
You can most likely ignore any search results that include I9300 issues. It's too different and has different problems than ours.

Let's assume its not the power button issue, If it is then follow Doc's advice.
When you plug it to PC, under these conditions, PC won't recognize it unless its in Download mode. So while its turned off, press and hold home + Volume down and then press power on button. Keep them pressed until you actually see the Big yellow triangle and warning. Then plug into PC. It hopefully will install the drivers if not installed before.
Run command
ADB Devices
it should recognize and list your device.
99% it's the button. Afaik, only that or a short could cause the device to try and turn on by itself after inserting the battery.

Umm... absolutely not disputing the button but just being Devil's advocate here.
Would something similar happen if the kernel boot image somehow got corrupted ?
Thanks all for your responses. I've taken it to a repair shop and instructed them to try and fix the power button. They were going to first flash it to see it was a software related problem. If what DocHoliday77 has said is true, then it should be able to work without affecting the software (given that they can fix it).
I will keep you posted. Thanks again!

I know you were just giving possible alternatives. Wasn't trying to argue against you at all. More just stating that I'd look into the button as the culprit first.

Putting me to the test, eh? I'm glad to hear you told them that though. If I am right, and they attempted a flash, but then the phone powered off.....hard brick!
Good luck!

So it was a problem with the button - Yes I was putting you to the test! But it was something I had suspected given what had happened the previous month. The repair shop fixed it and it's all good. While we are on the topic, I was wondering if there is a one-stop solution to backing up the contents on your phone? I know there are multiple apps for various purposes (calls/texts, application data..etc) - is there one that is capable of backing it up (from phone memory + sd) and restoring it? I figured something like that would be very easy. For example, you could connect your phone to your PC/mac and it would automatically back up your stuff for you... This experience has taught me the power of such a tool. If anything that could be an idea for you devs
Thanks again for all your help! It's greatly appreciated! I'll be working diligently to back up everything on a regular basis now
Glad you got it fixed! And glad to hear I didn't send on some goose chase to find what was wrong!
There are several solutions for backups, but most require root. Using CWM or TWRP recovery, you can make a nandroid backup, which basically creates an image of the partitions you select. Root not required but you do have to flash a custom recovery.

Cheers! Actually I know about both recoveries - I think I have one of them already. But a nandroid backup is merely an image so it will return it to that point in time (not very different to system restore, although i know system restore does not actually touch your documents & files). I was thinking something more flexible that would allow you to easily backup on a regular/daily basis by just adding to whatever has already been packed on a remote location (PC, cloud solution...etc). A solution similar to how some external hard drive softwares work - once set up, you have the option of automatically backing up stuff (certain directories...etc) set by a certain time interval...
Sounds like you have a grasp of the nandroid concept. For backing up apps and app data, there is no better than Titanium Backup. But for your personal files there are lots of apps that can do this. Many are tied to a cloud storage service, so if you have an account for one, see if they have an app that'll help. There are also those that can sync to your computer. I've never used either myself.
Personally I use nandroid and TiB (titanium) and the rest I can manually back up easy enough using a wireless FTP app.
Everyone will have their own opinions on the best way. In the end this is just one of those "find what works best for you" situations. Gather info on a few solutions, try them and see what you like.

+1 all the way. I personally don't use beyond nandroid and TiBu. Do please note, TiBu does indeed have an option to sync automatically with cloud of your choice, typically used after backup but can be used on its own.
I know for a fact many friends have been using various free cloud services and their apps to sync Google drive included. I for one, periodically copy my nandroids and my TiBu files to a personal cloud (WD Mybook Live) and that's that. I am sure there are concerns with using such a method. As doc correctly said, use what works best for you.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I'm familiar with Titatanium Backup and My Backup Root. I haven't used either in a while so should get on that!
Just to confirm between the three (nandroid, TiBa and My Backup Root), I should be able to save non-syncable text messages correct? (I believe apps like groupme stores them in the cloud, though I am not sure about whatsapp (do either of you know if you switch phones, you'll get your old messages back? Are they synced to the whatsapp server or just live on your phone locally?))
One last question (sorry!) - do you know what is the easiest way to document all the apps installed on your phone before wiping it out (without manually taking a screen shot of every single page of the app drawer)? I have nova launcher installed so I can backup all the home screen settings and save it to the cloud...
Thanks!

To whatsapp, the app itself has a way to backup the message history to your internal SD Card. From there you will need to copy to external SD. If you used Titanium, it will backup the messages as well as your Whatsapp account. On the new device if you restore that backup and open Whatsapp, it would be as if you were at the time of the backup. You don't have to login to whatsapp and re-validate.Titanium will also help document all the apps you had on the phone. If you copied all of Titanium backup to the new phone, all these apps will appear as un-installed there. You can then restore them and they will appear in App drawer. Nova's settings included.

Brilliant thanks a lot!
Note that if you use stock messaging, and you switch phones you probably will not be able to restore your messages. DB structure will be different which can cause anything to performance issues to app hangups and data loss.

I actually use Textra and before Handcent. Restoring from those should be fine right?
From one app to the same app just on a different device should be fine. The app will still function as it did before.

[Q] Creating folders/renaming files from pc freezes explorer

Hello, I am having a problem with my note 3 where if I access it from my computer (through usb 3.0), trying to create folders or rename anything causes the explorer window to freeze without accomplishing anything. I've seen posts about this before on here but without any solution. Does anyone have any idea of what I can do to fix this? Clearly most people do not have this problem. I will update if more information is needed.
I'll add that I am not sure if the problem actually lies with the phone or my computer, however I have never experienced this with anything other than my phone, including of course external hard drives.
WiFi File Transfer can help

I have been having the exact same problem with my Note 3, as recently as last night. I connect the device, the computer recognizes it, and I can browse the files/folders, move things around. But if I try to rename a folder, it just freezes. Actually, sometimes it freezes when I try to copy files too. I have no idea why.
I found a way to get around it, but it involves using the WiFi File Transfer app from the Play Store. The app is excellent. You install it, and then just type in the URL it gives you in your web browser. You can do everything you would normally do with your device (transfer files, rename folders, delete files, etc). There's both a free and a pro version. I bought the pro because it was such a useful app. Link below:

I have always had this problem.
It's something to do with how the phone is mounted to the pc. They changed it a few yrs back.
So I now just use wifi tranfer app. It's fast and I don't have to plug up the phone every time I need a file.
And I think it's freezing because it's re reading the phone and taking to long and timing out or something.

Hmm, interesting. Have either of you tried AirDroid? I haven't tried the software you guys linked yet but judging purely by the play store page, AirDroid looks like it functions and looks better. Anyway, I was aware of that option and AirDroid is what I'm using right now but I still find it annoying to have to switch from one to the other. I was hoping there would be an easy fix.
Am I allowed to make two questions in one thread or should I make another thread?
just user airdroid drag and drop or just dont rename folders

Yes, I have tried Airdroid a couple of times, as recently as last week. WiFi File Transfer is much simpler to use IMO, which is exactly what I was looking for. But i'm sure that either would work for what the OP is looking for.
mine also does that on PC, have to retry several times till it stops hanging explorer
it's probably this - http://www.gottabemobile.com/2014/0...ote-3-android-4-4-problem-hits-micro-sd-card/

[Q] Safe Removal Bloat?

Hey guys, I'm looking to see if anyone knows of what bloat is safe to remove or not
The list on my titanium back-up is super populated and I can see some that I want to freeze for sure but I'm worried if they're tied in to any system apps that could cause my phone to go out of whack.
Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
I can tell you that you need S-off before you do anything. TB used to be all you needed (I.e., root)...But now without S-off TB won't do anything to system apps.
Plus, I don't know if anyone has worked out this yet for TMO. I disabled Amazon, File Manager, Facebook for HTC, and Kid Zone...And my WiFi calling stopped working.
I'm pretty sure it was f*cking Kid Zone which did it... I've now successfully disabled Amazon and Facebook with no problems They disappear from your app drawer when you disabled them, so no point freezing them. If you disable them, you can then un-install them (if S-off), but again, no one has reported all the potential collateral problems by doing this, so I'd hold off.

Disable Car Mode on M8

I've got this strange bug lately where carmode just activates itself for no reason.
Is there any way to disable it permanently? It seems to be part of the android system and not a seperate app.
I've got a GPE Rom and the international version of the M8.

Its both a separate app, and part of the system, its a system app.
The app is called Car, and it appears you can disable it in Settings>Apps>Car.
Otherwise, it looks like you have a custom ROM (since you stated international M8, but with GPE ROM) and root? In which case, another option is to freeze/uninstall the Car app using Titanium Backup or similar tool. I would recommend freezing it first, and see if that adversely affects anything, before trying to uninstall it outright.
Either way, disabling or freezing Car app, should prevent the phone from going into car mode.
Thanks for your response.
The problem is, I can't find any kind of car app in the settings (with system processes enabled) or with titanium.

They might call it something else on GPE. I'm a Sense user, and its definitely called "Car" in Sense.
Another option, there are some apps on the Play Store that allow you to toggle off car mode.
As I found on another forum, this bug is likely caused by some hardware problem.
So i tried to clean the usb port by blowing into it and it seems to work at least for now.
All the apps including exposed apps didn't work btw.
