So i picked up a MHL adapter and have been outputting the phone to a monitor. Worked great. Then the only thing i did different in the next few days was installed Francos Kernel Updater, and enabled Hotplug Mod and USB Fast charge.
What happens is you connect the adapter. The screen flashes then goes black. If i turn th screen on or touch it, its fine. But as soon as i stop interacting it goes black?
It used to not to that. any ideas?
Try disabling USB fast charge.
Also, how is the signal where you are? I have heard people encountering issues when there is low signal and extra power is being drawn by the radios to keep a lock.
Just tested this mysself since I installed the Franco app yesterday.
I have hotplug mod and usb fast charging both on.
MHL worked perfectly for me. None of the issues you describe.

No signal, but i have it plugged in getting charged too, and tried with airplane mode. But like i said, it worked fien first day, only thing i did after that was flash new kernel, and install franco app enable hotplug and fast charge. Only thingi can think of unless its a bag MHL adapter.

You got the official Samsung one? (made for the GS2)
This is the one i got. Its just weird cause it worked perfect the first day.
Really not in the mood to do a nandroid and return to stock to see if that does anything or if its the mhl thats faulty.

Tried a different HDMI to DVI cable, same result
There is a few reviews about bum adapters so maybe it broke. I'd spend the extra $10 - $15 and get a quality one.

I was using an OEM MHL adapter at first, and had the same problems you describe, i.e. screen goes black. It was also flaky with my wife's Samsung Skyrocket phone.
I returned the OEM MHL adapter and bought the Samsung adapter; this adapter has worked perfectly, for both Galaxy Nexus and Skyrocket.

Are you using a HDMI > DVI adapter? if so, check this post out. I have similar issue you had. Seems like some people fix it by using a different ROM (I can't confirm that because I'm on stock 4.0.2 ROM) or just accept it and find a monitor/TV with HDMI.

This isn't a problem but more of just a general question. So does anyone else experience your phone kinda lagging or having screen sensitivity issues (have to press hard on screen to scroll) while having the phone charge? This is like a 50/50 thing sometimes it does this sometimes not. So post your experiences with this

Yes indeed. In my case, it's caused by my HTC USB cable that came with the phone. When I use the charger from my old LG ENV3, i never get that problem at all. As soon as I switch to the HTC cable, it's nearly un-usable whilst plugged in. It's odd, because the HTC cable works fine for charging and transferring data, so I don't know, but there's something wonky with it.
Hmm interesting

Nope, you're not. It can certainly become rather annoying if you're trying to use your phone while it's charging.
Yea, using swype is IMPOSSIBLE when plugged in.
I never used to have this problem before, so I wonder if this is something that comes with age of the phone. I've run all kinds of roms/kernels and never had this issue until maybe a month ago. But I think I've successfully narrowed it down.
You need a charger that outputs 5v at 1000mA. Any more or less and you'll get the wonky response. I have an 800mA and a 1.5A charger at 5v and I get the laggy response. And I took it a step further and noticed that I get maximum charging speed (regardless of kernel, I've tried stock and custom/SBC kernels) with a 28/24 AWG or 24/24 AWG micro USB cable. If you still rock the stock HTC charger/cable combo you should be golden.

i don't think its from age of the phone because i just got my phone in december (hw 0004) and i am still using the stock htc charger/cable. so idk its a mystery. nice work finding all that out tho its good to know that i am not the only person who experiences this haha.
I only get the problem when I'm plugged into A/C power, but not when I'm plugged into the D/C car charger... I think it has something to do with how the outlet is grounded. Maybe the touchscreen gets confused by getting grounded through the charging port rather than through your body. I'm basically making this up based on hazy memories from an E&M class I took about 8 years ago, but I think it's close. Anybody with any actual knowledge care to correct me?
Both mine AND my girlfriends gs2 have this problem. When the phone is charging, the touchscreen is not reading the correct point of where I touch. Anyone else having this problem?
Yeah we all are. There is something wrong with the square adapter that came with the phone. Try plugging it into a PC to charge or using a different adapter. It works fine.
I noticed this as well, but only with non-OEM adapters.
And I thought it was only me. Get the same problem only with cheap chargers.
OEM, MT4G, Transformer, Touchpad, Galaxy Player, Ipad & iPhone chargers all do not experience the problem.

I don't and I also have this problem.
I believe its the square Samsung charging adapter.
Powered by the SGSII....
Ditto here, it behaves Ok when charged from my laptop, PC and Motorola charger (came with my Milestone), but definitely quirky when charged from the square little adapter that came with the SGS-T989D.
Add me to this list as well.

Same here, but it does change when I use another Samsung adapter like the one from my Vibrant it'll actually work once i use that one.
I have the problem with non-oem...oem is just fine for me
This is happening to me. I am using a Quikcharger for Samsung which I bought from Sears. Anyway to fix this? Because the OEM square charger + data cable is to short to use in bed.

This is a known issue with the SGS2. Any inconsistencies or issues with the power supply via AC will cause the screen to tweak out. Possible causes are a bad cable, bad power source (outlet), or improperly inserted microUSB connector. If you try a number of times and cannot get the cable to connect properly, return it or get a new one.

Since I couldn't find any solution to my problem anywhere, I thought I'd post my solution here in case someone encounters the same or similar problems.
First, the problem: When my Galaxy Nexus is connected to my TV, using the samsung mhl-to-hdmi adapter, it loses connection at times. These problems get worse when the battery is low. It seems like the charger cannot support both the HDMI and the phone at the same time.
Resolution: My TV happens to be located in an area of my appartment with particularly bad reception. It appeared to me as if the disconnects happened whenever the phone was searching for a network. When the phone is in airplane mode the disconnects no longer occur, even if wifi is active. I haven't yet checked if it is enough to just switch off 3G, but it works and I'm very happy with it.
Activate airplane mode in Settings > Wireless & Networks
If you wan't to have wifi, just turn it back on.
I will have to test this theory
I have read that with the MHL adapter it works much much better to have your phone charging at the same time.

A Million thanks to you dude. You made my day. I would have definitely given you one strong hug if you were anywhere near me.
I bought a brand new Samsung MHL and a High Speed HDMI two days back, only to find frequent disconnection and white noise. Happened every few minutes. Tried everything and was so freakin sad that I can't tell. Searched thoughout to find a solution. No go. Neither XDA nor google had the answer.
And then finally stumbled upon this thread.
And its exactly what was happening to my galaxy SII. I was in a place of low reception where 3G strength was bad. Never thought of this to be a problem.
But finally I read, I followed, I implemented and there I am.
Extremely satisfied with my purchase and my SII. It was back up and roaring on the big screen clutter-less now.
Thanks again dude!!!
Just one thing. What do you think is the relation between the HDMI output and network strength?? Is it supposed to happen or is it a fault(H/W or S/W) ?

MHL adapters include a side port for charging your phone. When your phone is displaying itself through HDMI it drains battery faster than this 'HDMI charging'. If your MHL adapter doesn't include this, I suggest buying a new one. $7 on eBay.

I believe that for most (all?) MHL->HDMI adapters, you HAVE to plug it in.
In MHL mode, the phone is set up so that it is able to receive power (charge). The MHL->HDMI adapter needs power to run. Since it can't get power from the nexus (because the nexus is set up to receive power, not provide it), it needs to be plugged in via the side micro-usb port. So far, all the adapters I've seen/heard of are this way.
Hypothetically, I suppose that the MHL->HDMI adapter could be battery-powered or have a different plug to provide power - or it might only power itself and not the phone. I've never seen one like that, though.

I believe you are mistaken. First off, the maximum power capable of being supplied over HDMI is 50mA - well below the charging requirements for the Nexus. Secondly, the device you're connecting the Nexus to (TV/Monitor) is a sink device which does NOT provide power (unless MHL compliant?) to the source (Nexus). Thus, most (all?) MHL adapters provide the option of connecting an external power supply to charge the device.
To the OP, thanks for this info! My friend had issues with his and this could very much be the issue, the low signal is causing too much power draw for him.
Since I live in an area with very strong signal, that would explain why I never saw it.

Does your TV support 1280x720 over HDMI?
Awesome! I've tested this last night and didn't get any flickering of image when using my MHL to HDMI. The flickering would happen every 30 min or so sporatically...
FYI- your phone does not get charged through HDMI cable. You need to plug in power to the MHL connector to even use it which charges it but having the screen on at all times causes the battery to slowly drain. I usually just dim my screen down as much as possible to savage what I can. The drain is very minimal ~ 2% per hour with the type of MHL cable I purchased. (Menotek Micro USB to HDMI MHL Adapter IMPROVED WITH RCP- purchased on Amazon)
I know it's an old thread, but has anyone else tried bumping the CPU minimum up to 700mhz? I am going to do this tonight, airplane mode did work for me but I am currently looking for away to get HULU and Netflix working and I need the data connection.
Thank you so much, it works. Anyway, is there a way to have data connection and mhl at the same time?
I'm having problems connecting mouse through usb on the go.. when I try to connect my phone turns off and then it takes so much time to start?? any suggestions?

So i picked up an MHL dvi adapter off of the egg.......

Most (afaik) don't function without power being applied, but this definitely sounds like a power issue. I assume you have it plugged in to a USB port on either your TV or computer? Try using an AC outlet charger.
Yes the the power has been applied, i have tried both a computer and a 1 amp charger with the same results.
I also have a MHL HDMI cable that works fine.
Only the DVI one flickers. and only when other things are running on the phone. turning off 4g causes the flicker to pretty much go away.

I could get it work ONLY with the official samsung charger. I had an iphone and a HP touchpad charger both of which didn't work.
I have not tried my official charger yet however..... my issues are directly related to 4g...... when its on flicker is bad. if i toggle it off it pretty much does not flicker any more. Not sure if its a power issue or what.......
Thoughts.
I believe this has been reported before with Verizon Nexus. GSM version doesn't exhibit this problem AFAIK. It must be an issue with the CDMA version.
As for the solution I can only suggest you try the original Samsung MHL cable or another brand and see if it makes a difference. I use the official cable with my GSM model and no issues. I do however get random disconnections during use, which can be fixed with a unplug and replug.

So...I'm on a research adventure to figure out which MHL adapter to buy.
I know that the GS3 and GNII use an 11 pin setup. I don't want a dock [yet] and don't care about USB OTG simultaneously while displaying HDMI (although I might pick one up in the future). Right now I want an MHL adapter that:
1. Has zero or almost NO lag while mirroring so I can game
2. Charges while plugged in (some people have reported slowly losing charge...and I am on the Perseus kernel right now as some have reported better charging functionality)
3. Displays 1080p or 720p with no flickering and no choppiness (the display is 720p...so I would be fine with showing only 720p...I don't really care about 1080)
I'm fine with getting an original 5 pin MHL and a 5 to 11 pin adapter...but the above points must stay intact.
Anyone have an opinion? Am I missing anything I should care about?
i use mhl on my note daily
buy the official gs3 mhl connector and you'll have zero problems. with a wall charger you'll never have trouble getting things charged. if you are in the car using the perseus kernel youo'll be fine as well, the stock kernel is a different story though you'll need a really powerful charger to get it to work in the car.

Yeh. I read that thread about car charging without the Perseus kernel. I was hoping someone would respond about a MHL adapter they had that was a 5 pin and they got an adapter for the 5 to 11. But, since the mod moved this thread to the q and a area from the General area no one is responding. Kinda funny, since the general area has a ton of question and answer discussions.

Yeah I am a little cheap. But I read this setup works perfectly on the GS3 (and so it should on the Note 2). I guess I will see if that's right.
the skiva 5 pin mhl all in one adapter on amazon..no need to carry an hdmi cord or extra charging cord. Works for every other phone...bought the white 5 pin to 11 pin adapter on monoprice..works for my note 2 now..best of both worlds...can use for the note and my wife's nexus. Picture is 1080p...displays whole screen and doesn't cut it off at all...played a quick game..didn't notice any lag. I'm very happy with my purchases.
edit: JUST NOTICED IT'S SHOWING IN 1080i...no matter what I play. Going to have to research why now

Issue may be on the 500mah max on mhl 5 pin adapters. You may need to use the perseus kernel and the "screen standby app to not constantly drain your bsttery while using hdmi. Im also wondering about the delay. I have another similar setup in mind.

Charging with the car does suck. Using GPS on a trip the phone died along the trip. I bought a higher Amp usb car charger by Scoche (something like that) which worked great. I was on a galaxy s2 then and stopped by FYE to find it for $15. The company itself makes good stuff maybe you could look for them for better charging.

Trick with the car adapter is having one that does 1 AMP (1000MAH) OR higher and is either shorted (two center data pins) with a soldering iron, OR you have a cable that has the green/white wires shorted.
You can also buy a data only charge USB cable from Amazon.
Edit: Currently I have a 2.1 car adapter which I have shorted a USB extension cable (as to not ruin a perfectly good data cable).
How to (super easy really):
