Root and Install CWM from stock - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys, my first time posting here. I have an Epic 4G Touch, rooted and all so I understand how to use Odin, etc. So im down for spring break and my dad asked me to root his Epic 4G for him. I took a look in the dev section and you guys have a ton of stuff going on in there and I just dont know where to begin. I watched some of qbings vids but theyre all a bit outdated now. So my question would be, what is the fastest easiest way to obtain root and cwm so I can flash the cm9 beta0 on my dads phone? He is currently on firmware version 2.3.6, baseband EL30, build GB.EL30. Thanks in advance

Odin 1.85
EI22 kernel a.k.a GB3a.tar from mkasick search "epic 4g gb kernel source"
Clockworkmod 5 .tar
Put the phone the phone into download mode power and the 1 button uncheck auto reboot and f reset time nothing should be checked. Put the kernel in the pda section and hit start make sure odin coms and your not using a stock cable. Once down pop out the batter put it back into DLmode and put the clockworkmod.tar in the pda section and have just auto reboot checked. Hit start and once thats done you have clockwork mod. Just download the cm9 beta and the newest gapps 2012304 and place them on the sd card and flash it.

Ok when I odin the el22 kernel it still says I dont have root. To check, i dl'ed titanium backup and it said I dont have root permission?
edit: I went ahead and odined the shadow kernel which gave me root and cwm.

LOL you said you needed it to flash cm9? If you flash cm9 it would have given you root. Otherwise I would have given you an su.zip you never said you wanted to stay on stock

[Q] don't know what to do on putting 2.2 on epic

ok im about to get my samsung epic and i want to put 2.2 on it but i really don't know what to do. And i don't know how to put a rom or stock on it so can anyone tell me step to step directions on how to put 2.2 on the samsung epic when you just got the phone.
BTW im new to the fourm
Follow this link to the wiki. It has links to other posts that will answer all your questions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700
Step one search 1 click root and cwm (clock work mod) recovery. read the instructions to set your phone up and install. You'll be first clicking the soft menu button. That's bottom left under the screen. Click settings-applications-development. Make sure to choose usb debugging AND stay awake for the 1 click! Once you have both of them installed you need to find the dk28 thread. That's 2.2. Read those instructions put phone in dowmnload mode holding the number 1on your actual hardware keyboard.
All the right info is available in the respected threads. Search both of these in the development section. Once you are on xda website and click into the Epic 4g Development forum, use the tool on the top right that's says search this thread. Also pm me if you get stuck on any specific part.
Xtra advice, read and reread all instructions until you are comfortable with the steps. One more topic to search for is "how to return to stock" incase anything goes wrong. The only tricky part is the gps but there are also 3 threads I believe on how to make sure gps works properly. Read those as well. I know you want to click and have 2.2 but it does take a bit of research.

Welcome to XDA. As jprocha101 said, the wiki is your friend. Here's a link to the guides and references section. The comprehensive guide is pretty good.
The steps you'll follow are:
1. Root and install ClockWorkMod recovery (CWM) with 1-click.
2. Flash DK28 (leaked froyo build)
3. Choose a ROM (I like Viper and Bonsai) and flash with CWM.
4. Enjoy your better Epic.
The guide goes into details. It will be very helpful. If that doesn't work, search the Epic forums.
Again, welcome!

As of right now the roms are mostly stock optimized as much as possible (if your using dk28 or Froyo 2.2, the proper name). If you are sticking with 2.1, or DI18, eclair, you can flash a rom to overclock/undervolt which lets your phone run at 1.6g instead of 1.0g processor speed. If your using 2.1 and you use tanims odex script found in the development section, you can theme the phone, re odex it, and add on MobileAP a tether app people tend to favor. Keep searching, you'll learn all the things you can do with your phone.
Getting root is the biggest deal, cause you can run apps on a root level and unlock more features for example, when you back up your phone with any of the backup programs available on the market, if you have root, you can back up more user data as well as just the apps themselves but be careful to only restore data on the same rom you backed it up on or you might run into trouble. Once again, welcome to XDA, glad to have you aboard.

well heres my problem all i want to do is put 2.2 on my device and ya and probably some other themes like the gingerbread but i don't want to put all of the roots and roms on my device cause i don't want to brick it and make it slower. See my point
Bricking your phone is nearly imposible with the Epic and Odin (you know, the Norse god who resurrects fallen warriors to fight another day, get it?!). To get to 2.2 you're going to have to root and install the DK28 rom anyway, and you'll need to root again on 2.2 to get cusom themes, too.
Once you've rooted and installed CWM you're good to go. Everything else can be done from clockworkmod (except going back to stock).
There's really very little danger. All the devs give their disclaimer about bricking phones as a CYA move.
Btw, one of the threads has videos as walkthroughs. Those are very helpful.

Sorry been away, root and recovery are easy click menu-settings-applications-development then check usb debugging, and stay awake. Plug in usb into your pic and run the script. Follow on screen instructions which is choose root hit enter let it do its thing
Phone will reboot, then do recovery same way, nothing to worry about trust me

both DI18 2.1 and DK28 2.2 (froyo) have a tar file called that because they end in .tar.md5 If they end in .md5, rename the file, and delete the .md5 so it ends up being filename.tar. They also have a flashable update zip for each. Its personal opinion and I prefer the update zips. I like to keep my stock rom update zip on my usb card and if anything goes wrong I just flash it right over the problem. A tar file requires odin and I rather use it least as possible only for going back stock.
Download the dk28 update.zip file, the victory .pit file, and the dk28 modem (all available from the wiki); and download odin3 1.6 and I'll get you going with it. It is going to take 3 separate steps after you get past the root and recovery.

You can also just install the dk28.zip file without the need to root or anything else...but as long as your gonna run unofficial updates you may as well root and get all the benefits that come with it

New Epic owner question

My brother just got a sprint epic. He wants me to root it and flash a custom rom for him. I have been reading as much as I can and I have downloaded the oneclick root version 3. I have also downloaded the midnight rom 4.0 and 4.1 update. I have a quick question before I start. Does the epic modem need to be flashed with an update before flashing this rom?
Yes, either update it with Odin or the EB13 modem. Zip
What if the Epic I bought is already rooted and I want a different rom or stock? Same thing?

Before you do this, You may want to learn the following terms from the Development area...
Odexed/Deodexed
RFS/EXT4
CWM 3/CWM 2.0.5/6
Reading about these will lead to to a lot of the answers you need to successfully flash a ROM to your brothers Epic.
what version firmware do you have....check in the about phone category on it.
i didnt use odin...i used the samsumg update which was very simple and worked well for me...had no problems updating my phone.
you need froyo to use the 1click root method with clockworkmod3 thats why im mentioning it.
the 1 click method was easy...just make sure you have the rom on your sd card so you can flash it....with that rom you get the kernel whic hyou need as well - it makes it easier since it does it in one step.
make sure you dont reboot the phone after you root but flash the rom first, otehrwise your phone iwl lget stuck and you will have to revert it.
I will wait to do anything until I get some details like what the phone currently has on it.
Here is the phone info:
FW 2.1-update 1
Baseband dk28
kernel 2.6.29
build number sph-d700 eclair di18
hw version d700.0.5
So it would be best to update to EB13 and then download the one click method for eb13 found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612
Then flash the midnight rom?

Samsung Epic update qbking77

I watched QBking77 's video for the samsung epic 4g that he released on oct 23 i believe. This video explained how to gain superuser access and how to root. I did this fine and I know its rooted. I just don't know what I am supposed to do next now that this new (gingerbread) update has been released. Am i able to update now that i am rooted and have superuser access? is this what i should do? I was hoping to have the most up to date of everything and it seems to me that ice cream sandwhich or something like that is hte number 1 thing.
Please help me. im lost.

You can either Odin back to EC05 to accept the OTA (cannot do rooted) or simply flash a new Gingerbread ROM, a bunch of them in Development, and then if you want (don't need to) if you are on baseband ending in EC05 can flash the file that will update your modem to EI22 (the latest modem). qbking77 has videos for all this stuff too.
Well. what do you recommend? I am not an expert at this and i don't know the best answer. I still have EC05. The only thing ive done is add an open garden and bought tegra overclock and have it overclocked ot 1.52 or so.
Thanks again for your help.

Go to Development, download and flash a GB ROM, I highly recommend and support Legendary ROM. Then it is optional to go into the stickies there and grab the EI22 flashable updater in the Modems thread.

so will i still be on FROYO if i flash one of these recommended roms?
If i heard you correct, i will be flashing a rom which is like an optimized/ specialized OS for android's FROYO build. And then I will get the EI22 flashable updater in the modems thread (EI22 is gingerbread?).
Just so i understand hte process, what is the point of flashing a rom before updating to Gingerbread?
Also, i will not be updating with sprints OTA update because that will mess stuff up?
Thanks . You're answering questions that i've had forever.

No you will have Gingerbread. The modems are independent of the ROM and your choice. The ROM I suggested is EI22 firmware code optimized GB. Then if you want the baseband (MODEM) to be updated you can flash the modem delta I told you about. The OTA will not mess anything up, just more steps and more work to root.

I've read your responses and thought about them and read about them and thought over and over. I don't know what im supposed to do. Forgive me for being so slow.
Im rooted and superuser and my stats are
model number :sph-d700
firmware version: 2.2.1
baseband version:s:d700.0.5s.EC05
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9
build number : froyo.ec05
hardware version D700.0.5
I just dont understand what you are saying and ive been reading around on wikipedia and stuff. I guess im just slow. Thanks for your help.
Wow! I am so glad I came across this thread. I registered with this forum so I could ask the exact same question. (I watched the video and really really didn't want to look like a noob)
I have the exact same specs as above:
model number :sph-d700
firmware version: 2.2.1
baseband version:s:d700.0.5s.EC05
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9
build number : froyo.ec05
hardware version D700.0.5
I am rooted and have clockwordmod 2.5.1.0 because I did some one click root thing a while back. I tried the OTA update (because last time it worked, I just lost my root) but this time it didn't.
I followed the instructions on how to unroot in QBKing77's video on youtube watch?v=xJ5XZIlGwNY (Sorry too new to post links) with no luck. I even watched a couple of other videos that said they were updated versions, but I think they were for the Galaxy S II.
I was trying to go back to stock and get the OTA update, but thought I bricked my phone because all I would get was the little phone yellow exclamation point and computer. Every .tar or whatever file I had in the PDA would fail. I changed out usb plugs and tried two different computers both on windows 7 one 64 bit and the other 32.
Is it really as simple as me booting in to clockworkmod and selecting a gingerbread ROM? I thought I ran across a "really close to stock" GB ROM but with a couple of fixes.
Is it really that easy, and I wasted about 4 hours trying to unroot my phone?
Many Thanks In Advance.
Ricky
The latest for the Epic is Gingerbread. Click on my signature that says Are You Legendary. Download that ROM. Flash that ROM in clockworkmod. Check Qbking's videos on flashing a ROM. Then you will have the latest Gingerbread. Then go into the top of Development and go into the modems thread and get and flash the ec05toei22 file.

Rick and bret, you both are on ec05 but neither can get ota to ei22 cause you are rooted. Your 2 options:
1. Odin to stock ec05 using qbking77's video. You will then get the ota. This will wipe your contacts, etc. So BEFORE doing this, go to the market and get both call log and sms backup & restore. You can also export contacts to sd. Once on ec05 base, restore all. Do it before ota. No root or cwm. You will have to do the new 1click video specific to ei22. Look for the update video.
2. Do a backup in cwm. Find an ei22 rom and put it on your sd card. I recommend cleangb by toadlife. Get the rfs version. Boot into cwm and install zip from sd. Select the rom file. When done, you will be rooted ei22 w/cwm. Then boot cwm and restore/advanced/restore data. You will have all your stuff back.

I have a couple more questions.
What is the point of ODIN?
What is the point of clockworkmod and where do i get the most recent?
Why aren't we flashing? to ice cream sandwhich which is the most recent version out there?
thanks.
Also, which program flashes us? is this odin that does this?
If you are not confident with all of this, research.
CWM - Thing on the phone that flashes custom ROMs and certain modems (replaces the normal recovery) To find the newest, look for it and then flash the zip. It is specific for the epic so make sure you don't get one for the wrong phone
Odin - Flashes things from the computer. Used to downgrade modems or go to complete stock or flash an Odin rom (rare)
We don't have ICS because it takes a lot of time for our devs to port that to the epic. It isn't just copy and paste. It requires a lot of hard coding and will take a long time and we are waiting until cm9 to even start to get in to it. Also sprint and samsung EOLd the epic so we will never get ICS.
Gingerbread actually came out on July 24, 2011 but we just got it recently on the epic

Ill give you a step by step.
You probably already have CWM.
First put legendary on the SD card then follow this:
1. Watch and follow this http://www.youtube.com/watch?nomobile=1&v=qnk6lfBh5rI
2. In CWM (volume down, camera, power while off) choose wipe data, then choose zip from SD card (camera button to select, volume to move, back to go back), then navigate to legendary and select it

I'm not new to flashing ROMs on my Evo, however your forums here are a little more cryptic. My son rooted his phone and flashed CWM and a Cyan Rom. He would like to return to rooted stock. Can someone point me in the direction of the latest OTA Stock Rooted Rom for the Samsung Galaxy S Epic II 4G? He apparantlly followed some video tutorial yada yad yada. I realize ROMs are probably flashed thru the recovery console, is flashing similar to flashing on an Evo from that point? (Boot to recovery -> work your way to Flash from Zip ...)
Thanks in advance.

Here you go

Instructions are on that page, just make sure you use the full restore, and not the preserve data or you can brick. At the current point we don't have a kernel built from source yet, because of this, you must flash back to stock rooted EL29 via ODIN OC or you will brick. I highly suggest you read my thread in my signature because flashing anything ICS for this phone can be extremely dangerous and will brick your phone if you aren't sure what your doing.
Just to be sure you are looking at the right thread, please go to settings>about phone. Make sure model number is SPH-D710. I only say this cause I haven't heard of a Cyan ROM, and (not trying to be a jerk), most people refer to this phone as the epic 4g touch. You got something weird up there, and there are at least 20 different versions of this phone (galaxy s2).

Yes, that is what I meant by Cyan.
Thanks for the links and tips guys, I will check it out tonight.
Short version is this is the Galaxy 2 from Sprint, the one with the long bastardized name. Took forever to find this forum cause I was looking for something closer in name.
Yes it is the bastardized sprint Samsung galaxy s2. Word to the wise stay on this forum. Any other galaxy s2 forum especially international will have a huge possibility of turning the phone into a nice little paper weight. I have to say thanks for taking the time to find out. We have had a bunch of people come through here with paper weights wondering what happened because they didn't bother to read

Is there a flashable zip or whatever you guys use on the Epic somewhere that I can just copy to the sd card vs going thru ADB etc as in the link from above? The phone is already rooted, I don't want to lose root, just load a stock rooted rom on the phone.
Thanks.

You need this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
Just read the entire OP twice. It's really simple. It will return you back to stock rooted gingerbread EL29
Edit: just realized its the same link. This is not adb. It's an odin one click package. Basically download the file and press a button and you're done

I would follow the posted thread as.. a.) It is the safest way since lots of people have been bricking their phone via flashes b.) This will return the phone to the stock ROM, but it will remain rooted.
Thanks guys(gals?) I'll be trying this tomorrow!

Watch the qbking77 video and you'll be golden. It should be linked in the post. Really easy once you figure it out.

Ok, reporting back.
First we tried the 'don't overwrite data' option, everything appeared to be ok until the phone rebooted. It sat on the 4G splash screen in a continual restarting state for about ten minutes. We tried flashing that twice. After that we tried flashing the factory restore with root option, that worked just fine.
Thanks again for the input.
Now he'll have to restore all of his desired apps, but that's his problem, since I told him not to root in the first place. LOL.
Cheers.

Thinking about flashing a jellybean rom- Epic 4G Touch noob

Just got an Epic 4g Touch a few weeks ago. I've been using custom roms for years by just searching through forums. I've been trying to search through all these threads but it's very confusing.
When I bought my Epic 4g Touch it already had ICS on it. I managed to root it and put a safe version of CWM on it. Now I want to try a Jellybean rom but I'm not sure if it's safe or what I need to do to make sure I don't brick my phone. Can I just flash with CWM? I saw something about having to downgrade to Gingerbread before I flash since I'm on ICS. Do I need to downgrade?
Thanks for any help. Please believe me when I say I've read through and searched but there's a lot of info out there and I just want to be sure so I don't brick my phone.

Some ics kernels like agat's from source and kuban kernel are safe. But I always flash EL26 Kernel + cwm to flash any new rom. You don't have to completely downgrade as in flash the whole GB rom. You just need to flash the safe gb kernel with cwm. I use mobile odin to flash the kernel. Mobile odin is available on play store and somewhere on xda too.
Also man before you flash turn on your gps. Leave it on. I check all 3 boxes. Make sure you got a lock with google maps. Leave it on when you turn your phone off to go into recovery. This helps you be able to get a lock in gps with your new rom

I updated to ICS a few weeks ago and have been searching for a root method. All of the methods and instructions I've found are either for a different model or relating to gingerbread. Could you point me in the right direction? thanks.

when I Odin back to EL26 and flash a new rom the baseband stays at EL26. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Does that even matter? I haven't been able to find anything regarding baseband versions.

The baseband is what we (on xda) refer to as the modem. It doesn't necessarily effect the rom, but some people have found that by trying different modems, phone signal can be increased, sometimes by an adequately noticeable amount. When you use odin to flash EL26, it also flashes the modem to EL26 and when you flash a new rom, the modem stays at EL26 because the rom and modem are completely separate from one another. You can however download different modems to be installed either through odin or cwm here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764210

You are looking for something called odin one-click. Here you go:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728 sfhub is a god. He is very thorough with his directions and there are videos on youtube by qbking77. There are links to them in the above link.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I've had the phone rooted since May running only GB roms. I was holding out for the ICS update, only to be disappointed. So I finally started flashing like back in my EVO days. I'm no Dev nor a noob, only by post counts i guess, but I must admit it's a bit confusing. Luckily we have a great community here to help sort all that stuff out.
