I wasnt fully sure which recoveries were the ICS or the gingerbread, and that when you did flash CM9, the EL26 recovery would get overwritten. Thats how I got mine bricked when I tried to wipe and restore. Just add something along the lines of...
If trying to restore to your old backup...
1. Reboot to DOWNLOAD mode (power+vol-down)
2. Using ODIN (link) flash to StockCWM EL26.
3. Wipe and do a factory reset.
4. Then try to restore... yada yada or whatever the exact right procedure is.

As Darch's OP says, Wipe Data (Factory Reset). You should see that option in cwm stock recovery
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I think some people are over looking the fact that the OP asked darchstar if this thread was a good idea and darchstar gave him a green light. By that alone, I have no problem with this. There have been discussion threads in development forums in the past and if this clears up some of the garbage on the main page, then job well done. But please stop bashing the guy, he's clearly just trying to be helpful.

Ok, So i've successfully rooted my epic 4g touch and I successfully installed the rogue CWM found on this forum. Now whenever I try to flash the CM7 zip (trying to get AOKP), it will only boot into CWM and the phone won't boot. I've tried re-rooting, wiping dalvik (gives me volume patch error), and wiping cache, etc.
Any help?

You don't need to install CM7 to install AOKP.
Try this: ODIN to stock EL29, use one click root (choose option C, then I (this'll root your device and give stock CWM recovery)).
Then boot into recovery, flash AOKP, gapps and FD02 modem if you'd like.

Really? Interesting. Ok well most people are actually flashing AOKP and Codename from the EL26 CWM that is linked in the OP of those threads. That is actually how I have flashed over 15 times with different builds. So if you can Odin EL26 with clockwork mod you should be able to flash AOKP after you flash a calkulin format all to wipe all relevant partitions and don't forget to install Google apps.

Yes, root works a bit different on this phone. Pretty much every single rom available will provide with root and superuser when it is installed via some sort of custom recovery or Odin. Odin is actually a very safe and convenient method of flashing.

Hmm that's strange. A lot of people definitely have the fast zip installing issue but when they flash it for the second time without ever rebooting recovery or the phone it takes a good 15+ seconds to flash and it successfully writes to your phone and boots up. Going back to stock certainly can't hurt. Perhaps start from there.

Have you tried redownloading the ROM? If you downloaded via your device you could have had some dropped packets.

When i flash this rom an i try to go into recovery its not there..so when i install it from the e4gtauto it wont boot back into the rom..what do i do..in the e4gtauto what am i suppose to choose
You need to odin a recovery with it baked in. You only need to do this if you are wanting to leave MIUI. For now the kernel that comes bundled in the ROM doesn't have the recovery you want.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
CWM is not included in the rom for your protection. If you need to do any flashing you can use autoroot to flash el26cwm. When it reboots besure to hold the volume up and power keys to get into recovery as flashing the gingerbread kernel will cause your phone not to boot back into the rom since it's an ICS ROM. At the moment using any type of custom recovery in ICS is not recommended thus why the developers have taken it out due to all the bricking issues.
COOL COOL i just like to back up my roms..im on xplod mini 2.0 using rougue_ET-1.4.0-GUNSLINGER and its works an this is a ics rom...just a heads up
Please what ever you do I would avoid to do any wiping or restoring while in an ICS recovery/kernel. Please note also even the the gunslinger thread, its advised not to do any type of flashing *on ICS builds* Backing up might be ok, but nonetheless take your time and try to read as much as possible, there's numerous thread posted by others who have asked a similar question and has been answered.

"Be sure" when you flash el26 cwm 5.0.2.7 that just after boot, when first Samsung screen appears, start to hold power and volume up.. Otherwise you will have issues.. This is a gingerbread kernel and isn't made to run on ics, but does work as long as you follow those exact instructions.. I always just keep a copy of the el26 cwm tar on my sdcard and use mobile odin to flash it when I leave a rom.... It's fastest way to do this... Here is cwm el26 tar. Use either pc odin 1.85 or mobile odin to flash..

I'm going to ask a noob question, since I stay in the shallow water normally with sfhubs one clicks. Could you provide a little more detail in how we use / install this?
Would I ODIN this directly from FF02? Or do I first ODIN FF09 from the one click (data or no data), then ODIN your kernel?
Second question would be, with your recovery included within, could we flash Calks, your rom or Blu Kuban's rom without brick fear? Can we nandroid with your recovery? I'm a little fuzzy on all these recoveries now and which ones are safe, which ones are useful, etc.
Thanks for your time. I appreciate what you do.

We keep his kernels in the updater, I flash with them all day, you need to be aware of what it is you're flashing cause you may unknowingly flash an app or something with that format() command which is what wakes that ugly superbrick Galaxy killer.

So unfortunatley I was stupid on my first device, and it got that dreaded emmc brick. So before I root and update my phone to cyanogen mod alpha 6 I want to clarify what is considered safe at the moment. I plan to do the following, and if someone could let me know if its most likely safe it would be greatly appreciated.:
(I currently am on a new Epic Touch I purchased, which is not rooted, on 100% stock out of the box)
1. Flash E4GT-EL29-directbootCWM-v3.tar.md5 through Odin (will this work as a first step, or do I need to flash something else first in order to root?)
2. Through that recovery flash my Cyanogen Mod and Gapps
3. Never do anything to my phone after that without extensive reading
Should that most likely work without bricking? Thank You!
That should work. Also, from what I've read, if you are going to wipe your phone, DO NOT use "Wipe data/Factory Reset" through an ICS recovery. That has been triggering the random emmc brick. Use "Calkulin's Format All" instead or Odin back to an EL26 kernel. Hope this helps.

New Plan, would this work and be very safe?
Take unrooted stock phone, put it into download mode, flash SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097 package found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
Then flash a StockCWM-EL26.tar.md5 file in Odin
Then do a Wipe/Factory Reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Then Flash CM9 Alpha 6 and Gapps
Never used odin to flash kernels, just mobile odin cause it doesn't increase flash counter. Sounds like a good plan though

is going from EL29 to EL26 considered safe since it is going down? (Im just really cautious as I bricked going from ICS to GB and although these are both GB I want to make sure its okay)
Yes its fine as they are both gb

Rule of thumb. Never flash ics to ics unless using one of agats safe ics repacks or mobile odin el26. Wiping data or format all in ics recovery can cause a brick.

I'm coming from Universe 2.3 FI03 and want to move to Jellyverse 0.4 FL16. The only reason I was able to flash to Universe before was because of QBKing77's video. Anyway, I'm not completely sure what to do to flash to Jellyverse. The instructions go like this:
Installation:
1. Odin to EL26 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1662295) or EL29 DirectBoot http://e4gtcm.blogspot.com/p/tools.html?m=1
2. Wipe Cache
3. Flash JB Modem (Found above) (If not already on a JB Modem)
4. Flash Jellybean Format All Zip (Found Above) or (Wipe Cache, Davik, and System)
5. Flash ROM (And nothing else) and then Reboot
So do I do EL29 through MobileODIN, reboot into recovery, and then do steps 2-5 by flashing? Since this rom doesn't come with a recovery, can I just flash one through ROM Manager?
Do NOT flash a recovery through rom manager!
And yes, mobile Odin will be fine but I personally use el26 cwm.
Mobile Odin will not flash modems so you'll have to flash modem by zip in custom recovery but I think you understand that.

Ok, I won't, but why not use rom manager? Will EL26 CWM work with Jellyverse?
These are the instructions for flashing zips:
You would have to mobile odin el26
Boot into recovery
Flash what ever you wanna flash
Flash stock jb kernel
Reboot
Will it be the same with EL29 in the first step?
And none of any of these steps take place on the computer, right?

Check the instructions you copied and posted in your op. Yes, el26 cwm will work.
This phone + rom manager + flashing recoveries = possible brick. Been known to happen.
Those aren't the only instructions that you need to do. Just brushed up on the JV thread and wipe is also needed.
Read that threads op and read it as many times until you feel comfortable.
Good luck.
:edit: And if you're already rooted and have mobile Odin, then yes, you can accomplish everything with it.
And use the instructions you copied as per the op of that thread. Not sure why you changed them up in your last post..

The second set of instructions are for flashing mods. I pulled that from searching the thread.
I'm gonna use EL29 because I feel a lot safer that it boots into recovery.

I knew that but I thought we were talking about getting you to JV.. tryin' to trick me up.
:edit: And for the sake of the second topic ya snuck in there, I use el26 cwm to flash most anything of if I'm not using Odin. Habit for me.

El26 is much safer since there are at least 2 el29 repacks and one of them is iffy. When I had my et4g I used el26 religiously, as in if I needed to do ANYTHING in recovery I used el26 and only el26
I like to break stuff!

If I use EL26, do I have to wait for it to reboot, then go into recovery? Or can it just take me there?
Do I use the EL26 CWM there?: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26122172&postcount=4
We el26/el29 wont boot on any ics/jb roms when the reboot begins automatically press and hold vol + and power if you're too slow just yank the battery and replace it then boot holding vol+ and power to get to recovery. Yanking the battery wont hurt anything I did it everytime I used el26 cuz I was too slow to get vol+ before it started the boot cycle
Edit: yes use chris41g's stock el26+cwm5 repack
