[GUIDE] How to bypass WinRT / Metro sandbox using simple trick - Windows 8 Development and Hacking

Hi, I've created simple proof-of-concept project, how to bypass WinRT sandbox limitations in Metro apps using local service.

By design Metro application cannot access underlying PC directly, only using WinRT API and available capabilities. But when you create back-end service for accessing the PC and all data there, it's basically no longer running in sandbox.
The only "problem" is that user must manually install this back-end service, but that won't be a problem using some "social engineering":
User downloads "PC browser" Metro app, user can browse all pictures, music and videos, using WinRT API, but the app also shows message at the bottom:
"Download our PC browser powerpack and browse your entire PC, for FREE"
User is redirected to web page, from where user can download classic desktop installer containing "PC browser" back-end service for accessing files on users entire PC. Once this desktop service is installed, the Metro app can detect it and use it for browsing the entire PC. User is happy, but the WinRT sandbox is compromised.
Of course this won't work on Windows 8 ARM tablets. Using this workaround it could be even possible to build Metro apps for classic desktop apps like antiviruses, torrent/P2P clients, etc.

Yes, that's great and very convenient. WP7 is a huge progress in this respect.
You can also print the office document and send it to yourself via FedEx
(I want my USB mass storage back)

yes that is a real big - for wp7
Could be added simple by microsoft , just make another folder called Documents , and let it sync
same as Music, videos , potcasts , pictures .
but we early adopters have to live with it I think .
I think they (Microsoft) will change things like this really quick .

Agreed. I hope so.
Otherwise I believe many users will jailbreak their WP7 phone in order to get this essential feature back.

lol , only tweakers like us will jailbreak the phone (even when it isn't needed) , 99% of the users don't do that.
I know a lot of people that have a iphone and non of them are jailbreaked .
and that is the same for android and wm 6.*.*
Yeah I think they focused too much on Sharepoint integration.
Which by the way only supports Sharepoint 2010 when most businesses haven't upgraded yet.
I agree there should be document syncing in Zune just like there was in Active Sync.
thing was, i was out for the day working away had no gprs dongle as i left it at home and had a word doc to send. ohh i thought i know ill bluetooth it to my mozart no cant do that, ohh ill use the cable no cant to that. So it turns out office mobile is a waste of time on my mozart.

Also, there are too many services: Sharepoint, Live, Zune, Hotmail, Skydrive, Mesh, etc... It is a REAL MESS.
Office documents shall be easily transferrable via USB cable, from any PC.
ZUNE (or any specific soft) cannot be the answer since not all the PC will have Zune on it.

a simple tip for sending things to your computer
if you have a PC you can use the "map network drive" to create a drive which will sync with your skydrive.
so i use that to drag and drop files onto skydrive on the PC which i can access easily on my phone.
or you can download windows live mesh!

I'm an Android user so don't know if this applies to Windows Phone, but many people seem suprised when I tell them I xfer docs, music, files, etc quickly & easily with Dropbox. It really doesn't get much easier. Sure, a lot of people already know this, but many seem to overlook it too! But bring a new platform and all, there may not be a Dropbox app.
Also, I use ftp lots too. I have both a server and client app on my phones and they both work great. Again, not sure if this applies either tho, but maybe. I use Swiftp as a server, and andFtp as a client, both of which work great. If by chance they are available on WP. If not, maybe there is something similar.
Anyway, just some ideas. I probably don't know what I'm talking about tho, so ill go back to my own section . Hope ya find what you're looking for. I hate when I need a file and dont have access to it. Luckily there are some great tools available to make sure that rarely happens!
PS: Google Docs seems to be getting more and more serious in the mobile world as well. Today the just added editing capabilities on mobile devices.

If someone has some office docs in his PC and you want to import them you will not ask this person if you can install Dropbox on his pc. And what if he does not have Internet connection?

this is my point i wanted to transfer them so i could send via phones gprs signal. my laptop had no wifi or a gprs signal as i didnt have a dongle.
any other ideas???

SharePoint isn't a consumer Service. It's part of what Microsoft used to call BackOffice back in the day, if they still used that term (along with IIS, Exchange, SQL Server, etc. - basically what comes with Microsoft Windows SBS).
Live Mesh is part of SkyDrive, just like Windows Live Photos was killed and integrated into SkyDrive. Office Web Apps are also part of SkyDrive. It's one service. There is just an application you install on you PCs to Sync Files from them onto that specific area of you SkyDrive.
Windows Live Photo Gallery Syncs directly to SkyDrive. Office Web Apps save directly to SkyDrive and if you use Microsoft Office (desktop Applications) with SkyDrive it saves directly to SkyDrive. Hotmail/Calendar/Contacts are all basically one service. To-Do Lists (i.e. Tasks) are integrated into Calendar and supported fully by Windows Live Mail, as is all functionality of those components.
There are basically 3 Services: SkyDrive, Hotmail, Zune - all running off the same Windows Live ID (if you're organized).
There USED to be too many services, because everything was once separate. SkyDrive, Windows Live Photos, Spaces, Office Live Workspaces, Calendar, etc. was all separate. That's what Google is dealing with now, and trying to fix. Remember all the humbug about having different Google Profiles depending on which service it was? Picasa and Google Docs aren't related outside of their brand, things like that. Microsoft has fixed much of that and integrated the products quite well in Wave 4.
The only people who are suffering are those on Windows XP because they cannot install and use the update client applications (Live Essentials 2011).
Zune needs to be its own service. The same way iTunes isn't integrated into MobileMe for Microsoft and I'm sure Google Music will be as decoupled as everything else Google has when they release that (although the media industry seems to be quite apprehensive of Google these days).

Use SkyDrive. Most people won't wait until they get into basically a no-signal area to get their files transferred over.

If you use Microsoft Office (2003 and above) to edit a file on SkyDrive it automatically maps it as a "Network Place" on your computer, BTW, after you open the first file.

Still I think it's a bit complicated, and services shall be more integrated.
I think they will have issues trying to integrate them "more" than they already have.
Couple Windows Phone 7 with Windows 7 + Live Essentials, and it's hard to get more integrated with such a good workflow [than they already are].
I'm sure there are areas where the integration can be made tighter, though.
Also I made a typo. I said "... iTunes isn't integrated into mobileMe for Microsoft..."
Microsoft should be "Apple."

I'm confused on how to send word documents to WP7. I added the documents to Skydrive but I don't see them in my phone. Anybody know what is the ebst way to do it? Thank you

[Q] Android Application That Can Communicate with Lync via SIP

Hey guys... I'm trying to find an application that supports communications with Microsoft Lync 2010. The company I work with prefers that I use a Windows Mobile phone primarily for Microsoft applications, especially Lync 2010.. is there such a thing as an android application that can communicate with Lync?

access an excel data base from tablet

I work fork a distribution center for hardware parts and have been task with making our excel price database avalible to my 70 year boss on his kindle fire.
my original plan was to use dropbox , sync up the work pc with his tablet and in his tablet make the the document avlible threw adobe reader or open office probably as a read only document (since he doesnt know much about excel)
but i found that he generally disliked the use of spreadsheets on the tablet and am wondering if theres a way to create a more user friendly database for his tablet.
any help will be great and am willing to root the device if needed
Excel compatible apps on Android are usually not user friendly when it comes to viewing. One suggestion I have is to utilize an Android app such as Splashtop or Pocketcloud which allows the tablet user to view and control any Windows or Mac OS based PC. It's like having an entire PC inside your tablet accessible through a wireless internet connection. That would allow him to view the Excel files in much better detail than compared to the stripped down tablet spreadsheets.

I just post my excel files in my skydrive and it works perfect with my dolphin browser. I can't do full edits in mobile mode but I can view everything from Powerpoint to excel to one note and it's all synchronized and free.

mobile website loading not desktop version

Can anyone else confirm that going to www.crutchfield.com loads a mobile version instead of the regular desktop version? Any idea how I might see the regular version?
I dont have an RT device so cant duplicate and it appears that internet explorer on windows phone 7 loads the desktop version of the site.
Usually the URL for mobile sites has the http://m. or http://mobile. prefix instead of http://www. manually removing m or mobile usually forces sites into desktop mode. Most mobile sites also have a button near the very bottom (alongside where you expect to see copyright info) to reload the desktop site. Hopefully 1 of these 2 will be the case.
On my windows phone (samsung focus, original), it loads the same mobile version as on my surface.
You cant change the url because it will just continue to auto detect you.

My little test with both facebook and gmail.com worked fine. facebook.com on its own directed to the mobile site. http://facebook.com over-rode the mobile site and loaded the full version. You just have to be incredibly specific.
Regardless, you can use the IE developer tools (Tools menu, or press F12, which on Surface is Fn+PgDn). Use Tools->Change user agent string, and select another browser. Then refresh the page, and it should show correctly. (Idiotic web developers trying to be overly "clever" about detecting mobile browsers...)

I really Like Polaris. It's smooth. I have OSP, and it also seems very smooth and finished. Open Office, I have it, but I haven't messed with it much. I had no problems for the short time I spent with it.

All the faux-Office apps have limitations.
Some they share...
If you're adding or changing formatting to an existing document or adding content to a document originated on a PC the formatting can change and you can't see it until you open the document in the corresponding "real" MS Office app. So what looks fine in the Android app can look different when a recipient on a PC views it. Documents created and modified exclusively within the Android app tend to fair better formatting wise.
Spell checking sucks in Android. Some of the apps below offer spell checking and some don't. Keep in mind if you're using a BT keyboard word suggestion is disabled so there's no "real time" spelling support. That doesn't just apply to faux-Office apps it applies to pretty much all of them.
Only Polaris and OfficeSuite Pro natively support multiview which is something to consider if you do a lot of content sharing between apps when creating documents and projects.
Before commenting on the faux-Office apps here's an app I use when I want spell checking and either am using the BT keyboard or when the app I'm using doesn't offer it natively. It's called Spell Checker Pro. It's essentially an HTML text editor that allows you to create lightly formatted text, spell check it, and then send it to apps (MMS, e-mail, S Note) and copy<>paste it in to all others. The fact you need to create content in one place to ensure it's spelled correctly and then figure out how to get it to another place for actual use speaks volumes of Android's limitations as a productivity platform.

Quickoffice
Bought by Google in November, 2012. It's a nice clean app and offers spell checking. Formatting's fairly easy to apply but it's not as thorough (as many options) as some of the other apps. It's free which is a plus and Google's been working on improving it since they bought it. The major downside is cloud integration - it only works with Google Drive.
OfficeSuite Pro 7
I like this one but it's a PIA in a couple of ways. First, it uses its own clipboard so you can't copy<>paste with the Samsung clipboard which means you have to copy<>paste directly from app-to-app. If you have a lot of stuff you've got in Scrapbook or accumulated in the Samsung clipboard that you want to use in a document you're creating you're kind of screwed. It offers an optional spell checker and an add-on dictionary that vary in price. Their speller's pretty meh and sometimes makes bizarre suggestions. The dictionary integration's nice when you're looking for definitions, antonyms, and synonyms. They're kind of kluged in their implementation though. A misspelled word in a document shows up with a red underline. Rather than allowing you to spell check it, it allows you to look it up in the dictionary and then manually make the correction. If you want to spell check that's launched via an icon in a formatting bar at the bottom of the app. You can get it anywhere from "free" (Amazon App Store) to $14.99. The add-ons are $4.99. It's a very effective app with great formatting and editing options but it's not without its idiosyncrasies.

This is a pretty decent and thorough app. It offers no spelling support other than what's provided by predictive text and autocorrect on the keyboard - which are both disabled if you're using a BT keyboard. So its got great formatting support but the lack of spell check is a real issue.

Polaris 5
Polaris is a decent app. It offers no spelling support and the formatting, while decent, is fussy to use with lots of cascading menus and spinning wheels to select what you want. It has great S Pen support because of its integration by Samsung.

This has become my "go-to" method for managing Office documents. It allows you to RDP in to your home or office PC and use real versions of real Windows products. It works well with a BT keyboard and mouse and, because it is "real" office, allows you the comfort and flexibility to do anything you'd normally do on a PC. It's free which certainly can't be argued with. The downside is the PC you're connecting to has to be on all the time and if you're traveling and there's a power failure or the PC unexpectedly shuts down your pretty much screwed. You also have to be on a Pro or higher version of Windows to use RDP. You also obviously need to connected to the Internet. I have a 3G N10.1-14 with unlimited data so that's not an issue for me. At times I'll work up a document using one of the local faux-Office apps I have installed and then open it via RDP just to do the final editing and formatting.

The bottom line is we all use productivity apps in different ways and to do different things. There's no cut-and-tried universal "winner."
afaik, annotations on ppts cannot be saved on polaris. It lets you write them but they disappear.
Office suite seems to be the smoothest, but i only have the free version (read only).
Don't forget to try Kingsoft Office and Andropen Office too, they're my favourites.
Polaris is unflexible. I got Office HD in i think a Playstore anniversary sale over a year ago for 25 cents and stuck with it. To display pdf i prefer Moon+ Reader with pdf plugin.
Quickoffice was the best solution for Symbian, ported to Android and the company finally bought by Google.

I tried this and it looks pretty good. The problem I'm having is it connects fine, but only when my tablet and computer are on the same network. Did you have to configure your firewall, and set your router for port forwarding? Do you also need to set up a static IP for this to work?

The instructions MS provides for the client are pretty piss poor and don't even discuss external access. Here's the right instructions...

Full compatibility with the real Office is near impossible. Surely even for the official Office365 apps, which require a subscription.
I have an old doc file with complex layout, and tried it on many office programs and apps over the years. While it always looks the same in MS Word, no matter which version, it looks different in other programs/apps. In OpenOffice the layout got better and closer to the real thing over the years, and in Office Suite pro it doesn't look bad, too.
