[Q] Backing up stock settings and apps etc - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm looking to completely back up as much of the data on my GalNex as I can before I root it and jump into trying ROMs again.
I don't mind re-downloading all the apps I have now again, but I do mind losing all the data associated with them. I know that Titanium Backup is capable of doing this, but as I am not rooted yet using it is out of the question unless I'm grossly misinformed.
What can I do to back up everything before I take the plunge?

Just root it and do the backup. Where's the problem with that?

you can use Galaxy Nexus ToolKit and Titanium Backup.
These two tools can backup your date.

If you have the SDK or ADB setup you can do the non root required ICS backup method.

As a previous user has said you can use the Galaxy Nexus ToolKit to backup all installed apps and associated userdata. You can also use the ToolKit to backup your virtual sd card and restore easily after unlocking. The only thing it cant back up is your system settings and HomeScreen placement.
Mark.

Or you can root without unlocking your bootloader, use Titanium to back up everything, and then take the plunge.

Need to restore app data

I obviously am not rooted yet. I need to know how I can restore a backup using a non rooted program that will include app data like game info. How should I go about doing this? I have the old phone right here with me, so I can do a fresh backup if needed. I already have backups with titanium, but I can't restore them without root access it's telling me.
I would think that there is some way to restore app data without being rooted. What do you suggest?
Edit: Is there a temp root for people with 2.3.3?

questions from a first time rooter

sorry for the "noobness"
I have a nexus gsm which i rooted with toolkit, and installed jellybean 4.1.1 v3 by bigxie.
I also flashed the franco kernel (latest nightly build)
questions:
a) What do i lose when flashing a new rom......all my apps/data etc....?
b) i did a backups of my apps using rom toolbox pro, and saved them to dropbox. if i flash a new rom..do i just redownload rom toolbox and restore from dropbox?
c) I did a NANDROID......do i just save the folder to my PC just in case, or dropbox for that matter, or is there something else i need to do to transfer it to my pc? do i just use a NANDROID if i messup something and want to restore back to my current rom etc..?
d)everything seems very fast....although i find a delay in opening google now, something that should be instant.....any suggestions?
e) lastly...when i am in an elevator and lose reception...it can take anywhere form 10 seconds to several minutes before i get reception back when i go outside....what can i do to improve this? can i just flash a radio...if so any recomendations?
thanks for your help to any of these answers !!

Well first of all, I personally don't recommend using toolkit, because it creates more chance of bricking your phone.
A) you have two choices when flashing a new ROM, flashing without factory reset and flashing with reset. Personally recommend resetting when switching ROM. If you do reset, you will lose apps and data, but not files from sd card
B) I don't know how toolkit does, but I believe so. I recommend using titanium backup if you want a guaranteed app and data backup
C) you can copy the backup to the computer just in case. If you need up our want to go back, you can just restore it, but this wouldn't restore apps and data too (I don't think)
D) from my experience, Google now isn't very instant... I wouldn't worry if I were you
E) I think that's normal

Titanium Backup\Nandroid Question

So I haven't found the answer to this yet....
So i had to fully flash and unroot to take it my Gnex back to Verizon and I made a Nandroid backup but now after all is said and done I rerooted and installed a ROM and downloaded Titanium Backup and nothing was there. The folder was gone. I didn't realize it would wipe that folder away. I thought it would be like a factory reset (data/cache/dalvik) like I always do before flashing a new ROM. I don't have a backup of that Titanium backup folder, but is there a chance if I restore from a Nandroid backup up that it'll bring the folder back.
Not quite sure how the restore works in that sense. Any advice or answers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Nope.
A nandroid will restore your apps and such though...
So restore the nandroid (you have a copy on your PC, if I'm understanding correctly?) and create a Titanium Backup then.
Yes I do have a Nandroid backup copy on my PC. Basically I wanted my apps back but wasn't going to do the Nandroid restore if it wasn't going to bring back my apps and data. Now I know to keep a copy of the Titanium back up folder as well as a copy of the Nandroid on my computer so I don't run into this again.
Hopefully I won't have to go back to Verizon soon and have to even worry about it again.
Thanks for your help!

There's also the option of using the app appextractor. It extracts from your nandroid so you don't have to actually restore the whole thing. I use titanium backup myself, so I've never tried using app extractor to restore apps, but it has the option and it works great for restoring SMS.

People sometimes complain of TB force closing during restore and such; which I've never had.
But I did get this when trying to restore applications from a nandroid with Titanium the couple of times I tried.
Granted, this was probably 10 updates ago, not sure if anything has changed.
Titanium backup will extract apps from your nandroid too as previously mentioned. Not sure of the steps as I don't have my phone with me at the moment but I have done it many times. The online help for TB has detailed instructions. Basically you choose extract from nandroid then point it to the nandroid and tick the apps you want restored. presto it restores them, However if you don't have the paid version you will have to do them one at a time. In the future you can set a schedule for TB to send your backup folder to Dropbox or google drive also. That way you can restore from there in case something catastrophic happens.
I haven't had to use it yet so can't say how good it is but the app Nandroid Browser is supposed to allow you to browse thru the backups in memory and you can pick what you want restored.

Just use Titanium. That's why it has a restore from nandroid option.
Don't like titanium. Never works for me...and yes...i do know how to read the directions but i would still get force close issues on some apps.
Supposedly can extract and restore any file from it. Single apk files...whatever...and move to sd, dropbox...

I didn't realize titanium had an extract from nandroid feature. But I never have problems with titanium force closing either, months ago it would hang occasionally during batch restores but that has been fixed.

I was talking about the app nandroid browser that extracts single files. And i always got fc from titanium. I use app2zip and flash all my apps back in while in recovery at same time as Rom

App2zip doesn't restore app data. It's nothing you can't do with a root file explorer. You could easily just copy your apps and stick em in the ROM or Gapps zips too if you didn't care about the data.

No it doesn't restore data but as long as you don't clear your storage is still there and i don't have any apps that need data restored. I don't play games or anything like that. I did see they have an old final fantasy in play store tho..All my bookmarks are in sync with desktop so those always come back. While not for people who need data restored it works for me since Google hasn't been restoring any of my apps for quite some time. App2zip is so much faster than hunting and installing one by one
*Shaolin Shadowboxing*
Just curious, couldn't you backup data using titanium and backup apk using that zip method? So you can backup the apk and then flash it, then after restore the data with titanium? Just a thought
Swyped on my Galaxy Nexus running AOKP with Franco Kernel, overclocked to 1.4GHz
I don't really have any data worth saving. My memory is full of roms, pics, and recovery files. That's about it.

Restoring Contacts with Titanium Backup

Just got done rooting my ATT GS3, and flashed Cyanogenmod10 onto it. Before I did a full Titanium Backup, and did a backup of my previous ROM on CWM. When I got everything sorted in Cyanogenmod I noticed that my contacts weren't syncing, so I tried to restore them with Titanium Backup. All this did was give me an annoying error where something kept crashing, so I had to clear the data from my contacts app.
Then I found somebodies advice on the forum that said the restore the data from the recovery image I had on CWM. This was terrible advice and left Cyanogenmod frozen on the splash screen. So I reinstalled CM10 and got everything working fine again. Now my question is, is there any way to get my contacts back from my previous stock image, or the backup I made in Titanium before I flashed CM10? I've looked around and haven't found anything that works yet
Thanks

Your contacts will sync the second you enter your gmail info. Google syncs and backs them up automatically.

Sorry I forgot to mention that, for some reason, my contacts weren't backed up with my google account. I have no idea why this is, but when I try to sync them with google I get nothing.

When I try to back up Contacts Storage and reboot, contacts crashes and then I continuously get the message processes.acore has stopped working. The only way I can get this to stop is if I clear data from the contacts app
Ok. Another way when moving between ROMs.
Install GoContacts free app. This app allows to export contacts and import after a new ROM flash. The safest method i can think of.

Any of the Go apps are far from safe.
This is why it is known to never restore any system data.

I never told to use it. Install it, export, freeze/uninstall. And when needed, install/defreeze, import, uninstall/freeze. Simple. Plus I use GoContacts from over an year ago, not the GoContactsEx version.
Restore
A general query.
I switched from samsung Y pro DUOS to samsung grand quattro. I had my old device rooted and had a titanium backup. That folder is also available in my laptop. Is there any way to have my contacts etc back again on my new quattro??
Btw, previous device got washed thoroughly! So all i have is a "titanium backup" folder.
PS: In no mood to root my new device.

Did you backup with contacts to your google account? If so, that's a way to get them back.
Otherwise, you'll have to root your device.
P.S.: This is the S3 section.
Another sort of general question on doing app+system data full backup on the SG3 using Titanium
Assuming I own the 16GB version, I've rooted and installed custom recovery on the device. I've done a custom recovery backup (TWRP or whatever)
Now I'm ready to install my custom rom zip and gapps, but say I have like 100+ downloaded apps with app data & whatnot, so I have Ti Backup installed and do a complete 'apps+system data' backup file...
but my internal 16GB memory doesn't have enough spare room to store the complete Ti backup file in addition to my existing system files, existing custom recovery backup file and existing apps and data/junk. And my options for cloud storage, lets say Google Drive or Dropbox, don't have enough room either.
Is my external SD card (say a 32 GB card in the slot) and option for backup of the Ti backup app+system data file? Will that Ti backup file be readable by the phone once I flash the custom rom on the phone? Or does stock ROM touchwiz format the external microSD card a certain way that once I flash a different custom ROM like CM, that external SD card and all its data is now unreadable?

No the external will work fine as that was always my default storage location. But a word of advice. Backing up your system data is a bad idea.

Ive heard that (danger or being caught in bootloop?) but for some reason every youtube tutorial on full Ti backups I see they always choose apps+system data in the batch operations. And I've been doing it on my rooted HTC one with no issues.

Never follow videos, they are seldom done by anyone that really knows what they are doing. The issue is with restoring the data. Like you say you are doing it on your HTC one. If you were to restore that system data on a non HTC device or a non Sense rom (if you are using a sense rom) you will corrupt the system data forcing you to reflash from scratch.

Yes your better off saving just user apps. This normally backs up game save data as well but doesnt always work across devices due to different layouts of the partitions.

Can't find my contacts
So I have a Verizon Samsung galaxy s4 model SCH-I545 NC5. I used the towelroot method and then I used safestrap to flash Hyperdrive onto it. Everything worked fine but then I looked at my contacts and hardly any of them were there. I had previously backed up my data but I can't seem to find the contacts. I used titanium backup and the safestrap backup. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

You're in the S3 section (SGH-I747). But that being said, if you had your Google account connected to your device, it should restore all your contacts you had on it.
So can you backup and restore contacts using Titanium Backup?

[Q] Easiest way to "clone" two HTC Ones?

Hi all, I'm switching from Verizon to T-Mobile. After hours of searching, bricking, then recovering my HTC One (don't try flashing a T-Mobile radio to a VZW phone...) I've come to the conclusion I need to buy a T-Mobile HTC One.
I have my device set up the way I like it, with custom launcher, the way things are arranged, etc. Is there an easy way to clone my Verizon One to the T-Mobile One I eventually buy? Without having to reinstall everything and reconfigure all the settings? Thanks.
Use titanium backup to make a backup of all your personal apps and data (do not backup system apps or vzw apps). Then, copy your backup folder on your sd card from titanium backup to your pc. Once you get your t-mo one rooted. Install titanium backup and move your previous backup to the t-mo one. If you have titanium paid you can actually store your backup to a cloud and then download that backup to your new device. Hope that helps. That's how I've been doing things for years. I had a nexus 7 I setup the same way.

Might want to look into the built in htc backup and restore feature built into the one.
Or pop in tmo sim and it should work

That may be how I try doing it. Any ideas on how to transfer a few gigs of music and movies between the two? Without an SD card, I can't think of a way to do it faster than transferring it all to a cloud or computer.

That is probably your only option. You might even use your pc to put all your music and data into a zip. I have had trouble in the past transferring that much off of the phone not zipped up.

Also just an fyi there is another cool app called Online Nandroid Backup https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.h3r3t1c.onnandbup, which allows you to do a nandroid backup while still booted to the os. No need to boot to recovery. The only reason i mention it is that the two apps kind of go together and link to each other from within the apps.
