[Q] Touchscreen "stepped" movement - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After the ICS roms started to come out (and I started to flash them), at some point my touchscreen started to perform strangely... when I'm swiping between screens(slowly, so i can see the screen transition) the screens move "bumpy" like if my fingers was moving in steps... and other indicators (the one that show where is my finger is on the screen) show that when i glide my finger smoothly across the screen the input is stepped movement...
what shall I do ?

Mate, I think this is the touchscreen problem that the ics developers mentions. What ics rom do you use?

I thought most touchscreens had that?
Before i bought my DHD, i saw a video of some guy drawing in one of those drawing apps and he moved his finger from the top left corner to the bottom right corner.
It wasn't a straight line but looked like steps.
AND he wasn't using a DHD!!
I've had that behaviour since i bought my phone with Froyo on it.

That's made with the app Paint Joy to show you what i mean.

now I use lord's AOKP and the problem started after I started to install ICS roms.
I dont know after which rom it started but Im sure the problem wasn't before, i installed painting app on the blackice rom (before there was android 4.0) and it worked good (the lines was straight and accurate) but when i installed the same rom again and the same app again (2 weeks ago, to test the touchscreen) the line wasnt straight anymore
any help ?
*also I remembered another problem, if I draw a line near the side of the screen the line is cut, a line near the upper or lower edge of the screen is normal and is one line but near the edge it isnt. ( i dont know if this was from the beginning or came when the other problem started)

I seem to have the same problem. I have flashed a few ice roms, and am know back on mikrunny Rom a and my touch screen does not seem to be as fluid as it was before flashing the ice roms, I thought it was my imagination, but if you are having the same problem, there must be something that is causing this. I use the super wipe zip before I flash a new Rom or restore a back up, so its a bit of a mystery.
Edit: I pulled the battery and left it out for about 20 mins and it seems to be ok now and moving smoothly will see how it goes
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA

This is due to the screen technology in the handset and has nothing to do with your ROM or software configuration. The sensor grid for the screen is in an isometric array instead of a regular matrix array, because this saves money and gives nearly the same experience, BUT 1:1 tracking is not possible on our screens.
To reproduce this and observe the layout of the array, you can simply download any app that allows you to draw on the screen. Try to draw a straight line from a corner of the screen to the corner diagonally opposite.
I first noticed this on my Australian Vodafone vendor Ace running stock Gingerbread in early 2011. It is worth noting that I haven't seen this screen technology in any other handset before or afterward - my sister's Ace was the same, she recently upgraded to a Runnymede and that has a great screen.

with flashing ROMs you can't brake touchscreen...
you can try with touchscreen test from market if it has movement from lef to rignt and up/down in both portrait and landscape

Well, i understand that already 2 people said to me that its not flashing a rom problem and im probably wrong.... but im certainly remember i used a drawing app before and was able to draw normally but all the lines are like in the post above.
Also i remember few roms that asked to RE-CALIBRATE the touchscreen after i flashed them, can this be the problem ??? and after changing rom i cant wipe it the same way i cant wipe the clockworkmod ???
** im really frustrated because now, instead of a great smartphone with great and large touchscreen, I got a smartphone with (what seems to be) ~10 sensitive dots on the screen and making every movement on the screen stepped and irritating.

all touch screens suffer from this type of thing. They usually take about 0.1s between you touching the screen and doing something with it on the display. You can see an effect of this lag on this mikcrosoft video:
youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vOvQCPLkPt4
I think it's just a nocebo effect in your brain that you think there might be a problem when your running a completley different rom that your used to!

i really dont understand waht exactly are you talking about. are you sure there isnt something lagging your phone alltogether? because either i dont have that or you are massively oevrreacting (which i doubt)
so could you please state what rom are you using? and kernel? any other extras? how many user apps? try a fresh install, of course make a nand first...
@others:
i tried drawing on my screen, and to get the pattern from the post above, your "finger speed" has to be just right. if you go faster, it dissapears, and if you go slower it is greatly reduced. has anybody tried with a stylus and a ruller? i think that it is the closest to mesurable we can easly get.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiNa8EHkViE
not mine video, but it shows exactely the problem i have.....Do you have this problem ? does everyone have this problem ? if not, how could this be solved ?

ok, now i know what you ment
i get that too, but it seems to have more to do with scrolling than touchscreen, because i can see slight movement between the steps, and then it just jumps to the next "step"
i tried drawing a line in paint, and if you try hard enough to draw a straight line slowly you can do a much better job then the one on the screen shot on the previous page. it still isnt perfectly straight, but wiggles much less and quite randomly. in this case i think the reason is accuracy of my finger, since i did manage to get a few cm of pretty straight line. as i said, does anyone have a capacitive stylus? try that with a ruller

In the video they said it could be caused by bad/wrong drivers.... could it ??

As i said in my post with the screenshot:
This behavior has always been there for me with froyo, gingerbread and now cm7.
And since there are so many with this "problem" i suggest that it's not a problem but just how it is.
If it really is a problem for you, you should write an email to HTC and ask if there is a fix or if this in fact is the normal behaviour.

OK, my last try... Can this be caused by some wrong/bad drivers OR can it be caused by the screen calibration after a rom is installed??
AND can I fix it ? or at least minimize the problem ?

Bottom buttons stops working.

Hi.
I have strange problem. It starts few weeks ago with no purpose..
Sometimes my bottom buttons doesn't work. It happneds for example, when I'm tying to scroll email with Dpad. Sometimes when i try to scroll thru files in total commander. After scrolling few lines, they just stop working. Upper buttons works. Screen works.
What I did untill now with no results:
- flashed official rom thru PC
- flashed AT&T Official
- disassembling and cleaning lower buttons.
It looks like software problem, but it happends on clean official roms without any 3-rd apps..
Some suggestions?
Thx
do a search for white screen in titles...ur problem may be the dpad connector comes loose and the white screen thread talks about how to fix it
try a new rom my wifes phone did the same thing with at&t official wm6 rom I have since flashed almost every rom from here and never had a problem hope this helps

Thank You. I've tried few roms.. Now running CRC 11
I think it's a hardware problem. I've found some thread about similiar problem. Now I'm testing
Thx Dillsnik
I had this problem with a Hermes and I couldn't fix it no matter what I did. And I tried everything.
It seems it's some weird hardware problem. Soon you'll have problems with the softkeys too.
If anyone fixed this (except flashing a new rom, because that doesn't work), it would be an interesting thing to know.
Well, when it happends, all lower buttons stops working. gren, red phone, softkeys etc.
I just plug and unplug connector few times and for now it;s ok.
I will report if there will be some changes.
Maybe it's time for some changes I think Kaiser's will be cheaper in a moment

mine has been doing that for months (lucky my hermes is my backup device). its really strange but then again expected after ive dropped it so many times as well as throw it at my colleagues when they piss me off.
1) dpad stops responding after some time.
2) call/end buttons stop responding
3) softkeys dont work after this
4) 90% white screen - i can still see whats on the screen but it looks like its washed out and saturated to a sever point
the only thing you can do is if your device is still under warranty get it fixed.
Warrianty it's a faaaar away past
I can't say with any certainty this will help anybody - but I experience this same issue, regardless of the rom... What I always do - hit the Email button... I know it sounds odd, but it always seems to work... It launches email, which (if i don't need it) I just close right away and then the other buttons seem to magically work... I know it sounds lame - but honest - it works on my phone...
If that doesn't work, you may have to try the following link regarding d-pad and white screen
I had same problems, d-pad buttons stopped working then I got the white screen of death. I replaced the ribbon cable but it didn't help. I replaced the d-pad pcb board and everything is back.
Where did You get this board? Ebay?
http://www.cellulardr.com/products.php?cat=156
I don't think they send to Poland, but thx anyway..
Sorry for diggin this topic, but cellurar.dr is not responding my emails and I can't find/buy this board..

good stuff..
Nice will try this out thanks
looking good ..smooth..
installed on storage, and working fine on hd with stock rom..6.1
thank you
Looks fantastic. Giving it a run on my HD2. Need feedback/suggestions?
Really nice! But I have many problems controlling it via the g-sensor. I think it would be much easier if it would be a little bit like "Motion Drum":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yydDd727eE
Just 8 effects in a circle (or square) and a dot in the middle, which shows the movement of the g-sensor.
I love it
nice application
request QVGA...!!!! Please.
Installed and played with it only for a few minutes, but it is a hell of a lot of fun. I installed it with no issues on my HTC HD2. The program and interface is nice and simple, good image quality and user interface. The Home, sound and settings buttons at the bottom are a bit misleading. They look like HTC sense buttons which makes you first think you can slide across it with your fingers. They are however individual buttons and take a second before you enter the menu. Whichever it works, the buttons are OK, no oldstyle windows mobile look there. The instrument menu is great and user and touch friendly, so no issues there. The settings tab is simpel and clean. Have not had the time to get a feeling for the sensitiviy of the X, Y and Z axis, but I guess it is a question of trial and error. I think a small table in the help menu would be helpful to get insight into the settings.
I found it quite frustrating to use the G-sensor. When you hold the htc horizontally the Z-axis, or vertical axis is the middle box and works ok. The problem starts with the horizontal x-axis (or left and right shake). One side is one instrument and the other another. in the y-axis (or forward/backward shake) you have another 2 insturments that also seem to battle amongst themselves. This makes it difficult to create a harmonic beat. Also the G-sensor seems to have a "contra-coup" effect, in which a sudden change in direction in one axis of the x- or y-axis seems to cause a repeat of the same instrument. This is counter intuitive. The reason for this is that the postive axis (can) code(s) a different instrument than the negative axis. This applies for both x- and y-axis. You expect from a movement from the positive to the negative (left to right or visa versa, to-and-through) or visa versa to change instrument. This is not always the case. This makes this method of use with the G-sensor an unpleasant experience.
On the other hand the individual instruments can be tapped which works much better and is much more fun! 2 issues I have found is there is a lag time of the instrument sound when pressing it multiple times. Perhaps this issue could be solved. A second issue is that, although the HD2 is multitouch enabled, it apparently is not enabled in this app. I can only press one instrument at a time. Perhaps this issue could also be solved.
All-in-all G-soundbox is a must have app for the HTC HD2! Before its availability, however, a few usability issues with the G-sensor and multitouch need to be solved.

The Omnia has a WQVGA = Wide QVGA screen (240*400) This app is only for (W)VGA(800*600 - 480*640)
So no need to try to see it isn't working.

Miscalibrated accelerometer. Anything I can do?

I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus LTE, rooted running Android 4.0.2. I recently noticed (while playing Doodle Jump) that my accelerometer was slightly off. If I held the phone straight vertical (or laid it flat) the doodle would move to the left. In order to play properly I would have to lean the phone to the right to compensate. I tested this again with two different gyroscope apps. It's off by about 4 degrees (not terrible but enough to be obnoxious). I also used the in-app calibration option which fixed the problem, but only for that app. I re-calibrated my compass to no effect and did a factory reset to no effect. I don't know if this problem existed before I rooted as rooting was the first thing I did.
I'm unsure whether this is worth sending the phone back over (I can re-lock my boot loader if needed). Or if I did, would they even take it back for such a small issue? I've had the phone for about two months now. I would much prefer some sort of software fix. I understand that certain phones had global calibration options in the past. I have root access and am open to some hacking.
Any help is appreciated.
+1 have the same problem.. very annoying in Doodle Jump! I tried searching for some sort of calibration program on market but found nothing.

Download GPS Status and use the Tools to Calibrate
https://market.android.com/search?q=gps+status&c=apps
Nope. Didn't work.
As I stated in my post, I've tried calibration apps, but they only calibrate the accelerometer for that one app.
Odd. Worked perfectly for me when I had calibration issues in Sky Maps.
Some apps will have you wave your phone in the pattern of an '8' a few times. I wonder if thats universal to calibrate?
Calibrate works 100% gps status and tools.
However I find it doesn't stick forever.. It reports that it's always off in the same direction and by the same amount.
Sent from my Google phone
Is this a stock rom?
This might be a bug with the game itself (maybe not). But I have this game too, although on my tablet. Last night my boy was playing it and I noticed the calibration was off. It seemed like it was calibrated for landscape although we were in vertical mode. I initially thought that it calibrated when launched, so I closed out of the game, set it to vertical orientation, and relaunched... same thing.
This was on a Transformer.
I'm almost positive it worked on the Nexus before (as my kid loves it). Perhaps a bad update?
I'm on a AOSP rom (Gummy) and I'll try it again and post back.
EDIT: My Bad I was referring to Hyper Jump... which works fine on my Nexus which uses the accelerometer.
Yeah it's the stock ROM (I'm waiting on CM9). It's defiantly not the app, multiple apps have confirmed the problem. Multiple calibration tools have worked, but are only a fix for that one app. The compass calibration (wave your phone in a figure eight) does nothing to fix the problem. There is no global calibrate.
I'm sure there must be some sort of permanent fix with root permissions. But I'm not a developer and don't know where to start.
I have the same problem in neo v and found no way, too!
Please help!
+ 1. someone really need to make a fix for this . i know there are calibration options in the sgs and sgs2 but why not in the gnex settings?
Some games suggest holding your device flat and then moving it around in a figure eight pattern to recalibrate the accelerometer.
See if that helps.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Same prob here. Any Solutions? Calibration apps don't work, only for the specific app. is there a way to get a global setting?
I had the same problem on my GNex... I don't know if it's for that, but it's worth a try...
when I played a game it always went in the right side... I read somewhere that the GNex has an automatic calibration... i just left it facedown in the table everynight (charging)... and afer 2-3 days it was good calibrated...
Maybe I just was lucky... but you don't have anything to lose...
Sorry for my bad English (Grammar).

Couldn't find anything about automatic calibration. I wonder how this should work anyway. The device doesn't know what's the correct position. Your table might be slanted.
So any information on global calibration?
Did you try it?... it worked for me... maybe it memorizes if you do it over and over again?

Samsung A70 touch panel issue

EDIT: PROBLEM FIXED WITH SOFTWARE UPDATE. THANK YOU SAMSUNG.
I have touch screen issues when playing games like PUBG, AxE, basically any game which uses a movement stick. I drag the stick to keep moving and suddenly it stops registering my finger so I have to drag it again to keep my char moving... Or stick starts going wrong direction and I have to readjust everytime. I have seen others reporting the same problem.
It's worth mentioning that ss soon as I bought the phone I found a 166MB OTA update which said in it's description "Fix touch panel issues" so I installed it but the issue still persists. Atleast it seems like Samsung knows about this.
Anyone else got this issue?
My phone model is A705FN/DS
A70 touch problem
Same issue here with me, when i used antutu to test touch problem appears with multi touch only.
yes. terrible on pubg, cannot aim to shoot as before. also typing very slowly to get correct typing
I did not see any OTA updates yet.
I have similar issues, unfortunately:
Whenever I touch the edge of the screen too much any touch on the main part of the screen does not get registered.
This typically happens when holding the phone with one hand and for instance trying to tap the home button (circle on bottom mittle).
This makes using the phone difficult with one hand.
Also, sometimes touches get captured too easily/quickly. This causes action to I did not intend.
Besides touch issues it seems there are various bugs making the phone annoying to use. Some are fixed with a reboot, some crop up randomly.
- I use text to speech a lot, using Voice aloud reader. when I skip to the next sencence the audio level is reduced noticabl and volume up/down controls call volume instead of media volume.
- Unlocking seems inconsistent. Sometimes my settings to remember unlock for some time are remembered sometimes it asks for fingerprint or pin very quickly. It seems some changes made in the settings might not be applied correctly sometimes, but I find it hard to test/reproduce.
- The fingerprint scanner is very inconsistent, sometimes it works mostly, at others it does not register the finger even with many tries.
Maybe in the future I can describe those issues more accuratly and reproducable.
Does anyone have similar issues?

I face touch issues in my Samsung Galaxy A70. Joystick goes back and halts in middle without sensing my finger on it. This needs to be reported to Samsung. Any idea what is the efficient way to report?
I don't have this problem anymore. It became less and less frequent and it finally disappeared. I did nothing, just using the phone everyday, with occasional restarts
EDIT: PROBLEM IS BACK
there's a solution that worked with my friend
1 - go to the game launcher and choose performance and change the frame rate to 30
2- make pubg control sensitivity high ( from the game settings )
3- take care about side touches and accidental touches

I've never seen this icon until I installed then Uninstalled Edgetouch by Good Lock. Anybody knows how to get rid of this annoyance?
Did you set edge touch to optimized setting before uninstalling?
I don't think that's even part of that app.
I just ditch it, no issues.
Try in safe mode.
Try clearing system cache.

Yes I set it back to optimize before I uninstalled. I'll try Safemode.
No luck after safe mode and clearing system cache. I used the phone for a full week without a case and never saw this icon until I installed edgetouch. It happens every time my palm touches the screen while using without a case. Palm touches without a case are unavoidable with the S20 ultra

Thank you.
For reminding me of this apk.
I had forgotten it was running and with the case I use it's not needed. The bloody thing was causing edge zone cut/paste issues.
I had been blaming One Handed Operation + for that issue. Fixed
I don't think this apk is causing your issue though. Try reinstalling it and see if any change ocures. It's definitely a 3rd party apk though.
Sometimes poorly written apps will alter hidden settings. Never seen one do something like this though; I think it's a currently running app on your system. If safe mode removes it, there's no doubt.
If a system app it may be a bugger to find.
I look at the app cache (Device Care) after clearing it to see what loads first and/or when the icon first appears. I also use Package Disabler to troubleshoot this kind of issue; disable the offending apk, it will disappear.
I would not do a factory reset as it will likely reoccur unless you ID the root cause.
Play with it... sometimes it takes a while but the answer will eventually turn up
Note: always use a good case. These phones will get severely damaged eventually otherwise.
They are corner hitting, face planting happy devices. I use the Zizo Bolt on my Note 10+, it has provided excellent protection. The kickstand tends to break but that's it's only weakness.

I feel like such a noob. That was my edge panel handle that mysteriously got moved to the bottom of the screen lol. Could have happened when I was trying different resolutions and DPIs.
I take my case off only at home. The S20 ULTRA is already a big device and the added bulk of a case can become uncomfortable very quick. I've not cracked a phone screen since the S6 edge and I've carried caseless about 90 percent of the time. As heavy as this thing is I know one drop on concrete and it's over the screen

Sorry I didn't even think of that little bugger. I did the same thing over a year ago and drove me nuts too.
I thought it looked familiar
I only use it for easy multiple cut/paste... probably need to revisit that for a better option.
