Does the back cover do anything? signal? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

i have the white galaxy nexus and wanted to buy the extended battery but their is no white extended battery cover.. i was thinking of just having no cover at all and using my case to hold the battery in? but does the battery cover actually do anything?

... It holds the battery in place.

Is the white nexus out?
Yes you could probably get by, depending on the case. Many people do this for clearance reasons.

yes i have the white GSM version

If you have a case on it... Why not just use the gray battery cover? I mean you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

that would be a good idea but my case is clear lol

battery door is useless. Some people remove the battery door to close clearance gaps when using the wrong case (regular case w/ extended battery). I've personally done it for a few days before buying a properly fitting case. No change.
If anything, no door would increase signal since it wouldn't be covered by the door.

I think he's referring to the Thunderbolt. On the thunderbolt, you would get no 4G and probably be stuck on 1x without the battery cover because of two prongs that were on the inside of the battery cover that grabbed the signal or helped it receive the signal or something like that. I wear cases with no battery cover all the time and I haven't seen any negative impact

dunno abt the gnex but when i had my gs2 with extended battery i didnt use the battery cover so that i could use normal case and it had been fine and no dust in the camera in 3 months

The Dinc 2 was the same way. It was REALLY a poor design. I feel like after removing the back cover a bunch of times, the connections would start wearing down and there goes your signal.

I think the area around the camera hole has some sort of shielding. You can see parts of it protruding slightly; I think there's a metal layer under there. Also, the part right above the battery has a square protrusion as well. Maybe something to do with NFC? Why doesn't someone just cut it open

Extended battery fit in incipio case?

I have the incipio case on my phone and was wondering if the extended battery fits inside. I have the same case they sell at Verizon.
Yes it will. I'm using the stock battery door with the extended battery in the case right now.

Does it feel like it adds any more thickness? Or just extra weight?
You can barely feel the weight. The door fits very snug but you don't really notice it with the case on.

Careful- from what it sounds like, forcing the stock back back on the extended battery can push the battery into the guts of the phone, and potentially affect the screen itself. I tried it for a heartbeat, but didn't like having to force it back on....
G'luck!

Hardly. Don't listen to this dude. The battery door is flimsy as **** and flexes a hell of a lot more easily then the 'guts' of the phone. It will not affect your screen whatsoever. I am running the Incopio case with the extended battery door but at the same time I used the stock door with the case as well. Either way works, but to you, one may be more favorable than the other. The factory battery door does cause the Incopio case to bulge the slightest bit but to many would be unnoticeable.
Peep the slight differences...
Would you mind putting a picture of the extended battery in incipio case? i want to order the extended but want to run my current case without problem.. how much weight does it add?
With the extended battery the bottom doesnt sit in that well and overlaps the lip, less so with the stock cover but it still doesnt fit that well.

HHmm that might be the deal-breaker. I really want this for only $25 but i NEVER use my smart phones without cases, so i dk if the extended would be worth it if the incipio vzw case doesn't fit right.
I'm looking for a "barely there" type case that would add a little extra grip. I never use cases and for $25... if it ain't perfect I know I'll eventually stop using it.
Any chance we can see the case with the extended battery and extended battery cover on the phone?

Battery Back Cover Metal?

Hello, i'm looking for a metal back cover for the i9250.
The geniune backcover looks like crap plastic. :'(
Found this
http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300612551857
Asked to the seller, "it's PVC but looks like metal"
Anyone had found this?
Regards
It can't be metal. Not physically possible. Think how do you place plastic batt cover in to the nexus... You have to bend it slightly to fit it in properly....

Are all plastics bendable? Are all metals non-bendable?
Metal is bendable but in this case if you bend it it will stay that way more likely at least

A pure metal back could possibly make NFC useless since the antenna is right on the battery.

Dont most people put cases on their phones anyways? Who even looks at the back enough to matter? I know if I didn't have a case on my phone many times those countless falls from my lap getting out the car...
I'd love to see a black metal- or aluminium-back-cover on my SGN... but no luck finding one yet
would be great if anyone knows a link...
Imho those available for Galaxy SII (example) are amazing and are giving the phone a more valuable touch.
As for cases:
I wouldn't wrap my new car with a rubber or plastic shell so why would i my phone.
I'm the more "garage"-kind of guy and prefer (felt)-bags... (jm2c)

Yes I would much rather have no case on my phone because of the lighter slimmer feel, but I have yet to break a phone with a case on it. Ever since I got my OG Droid I have always put a case on my phone. I am sure I would of used many insurance claims over the years if I hadn't had a case on my phones. Plus it keeps my phone's body in better shape and less scratches. When you sell your phone every year to get a new one, its better to have it in good shape.
Does this mean better antenna/gps receptions???
/dream
you probably would not want this if you read about all the problems the ASUS transformer Prime is having with GPS, WIFI & BT - as it has a full metal cover.
I dont want to explain all this again, read this thread from page 3.

understood the nfc problem, but i really dont care about nfc need a quality phone and the plastic is "crackling" makin me crazy
Quality phone? This is the most solid feeling Samsung phone they've ever made. No creaking on mine.
Much better structure than my Vibrant, but I still feel better with a case.

Case Mate and the 2000Mah battery from Shimshop

Hey,
Just a heads up for anyone using the casemate cover for their GNex and thinking of buying the 2000Mah battery(GSM) The case no longer fits my phone properly.
When the cover is on it constantly raises the volume and presses the power button on and off. I have tried to bend the case, tweak it etc and nothing works.
I don't particularly care as the battery is awesome but just a heads of for anyone thinking of a similar set up.
Can you clarify which case mate case this is?
Thanks!

It certainly doesn't look like the barely there. It is a tough case, it is a two piece.
What he's saying is that, try the case without a battery cover on.
I personally had the tough case and went to the otterbox commute. I liked the tough case, never tried it with extended battery though.

Try the case without the battery cover on? Do you recommend having a Galaxy Nexus with no battery cover and wedged into the casemate? Nuts!
The issue is with the volume buttons and the power button. Because the extended battery comes with a different back cover it pushes the phones buttons into a different position and as such they don't fit properly into the casemate's guides.
EDIT- Just out of curiosity I tried this without the back cover and it still doesn't work eventhough the thoughts of not having the back cover on a mobile phone baffles me.

Some people have put their phones without the battery door on. Not sure if Tough Case even works with Extended Battery at all since I haven't heard of anything about it. It most likely doesn't.
Check the stickied thread and it shows a list of cases that are compatible. I switched from Tough Case to Otterbox Commuter and it fits fine. The bottom part of the case kind of sticks out but it's not a deal breaker.
EDIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20581041&postcount=2 thats the post, I know it says LTE but it should be doable.

Aluminium Case

Has anyone bought and tried out this casing? It's a aluminium bumper, just like those for iphones. Looks interesting although that front bezel is over pronounced imo. If you anyone has bought this maybe a short review and some pictures will be greatly appreciated.

Wowie! Looks great. Too pricey for me though to try to find out whether it'll fit the VZW version..
I thought 35 wasn't too bad considering the fact that I had a friend who paid 130 for an element case for the iPhone. Lol
I'm using a GSM phone with standard battery and I have a friend whose using VZ LTE with extended so ill definitely let you guys know how it fits!
If anything, it does seem like the full battery cover is exposed so I would assume the extended batteries would fit. That's also another plus for me since I swap out with ebay batteries when I'm running low!

yeah, I agree.. looks like it adds a good 3mm "lip" on the front...
those are over priced, I get them for USD 15 over in china.
Looks pretty cool. I'd be interested how they look and fit on the VZ w/o extended battery.
Ordered as soon as I saw this post, and it FINALLY came in today!
It does add a bit of bulk and weight, but it feels pretty sweet!
My favorite thing about this case though is the fact that the battery door is exposed so I can easily remove the back cover and swap out batteries without taking the whole case off!
With that said, there's definitely a good chance that the extended battery would fit, but the case is pretty fitted on GSM so I honestly don't think it will fit the VZ LTE model.

He has extended battery and verizon phone and claims it works. He did need new screws.
He also had an issue with the headphone jack being too deep, and he needed to buy new ones from radio shack.
Thanks for the review though!

Extended battery case?

Will be upgrading from my sg2 tomorrow and looking around for an extended battery already heh.
I was looking at getting the qcell or hyper 4200mAh with nfc.. But i was wondering if there was any cases that would fit for the extended battery?

Thank you for posting this.
I am really hoping there's a solution to this problem.
I have a 4200mAH Qcell battery for my Samsung Epic Touch 4G and I wouldn't part with it for the world. It's an insanely high quality battery for the money. I basically used a hard-shell/soft-shell bracer from a cheap case I bought, threw away the inner part, and just made the outer part "fit" the phone with that large battery in there.
I don't care if the solution is ghetto or weirdly-rigged, as long as it's snug and works, I'm interested.

Yeah, a case for the extended battery is my concern also. I do not want to buy the battery and be stuck using a case that gives very little protection. I have an idea which I got off the htc rezound threads. They have modified a trident kraken case to fit the extended battery. here is the link to that
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1550351&page=3
However before I go ahead with such a thing I really want to make sure it will work. I need to know precise dimensions of the battery and the thickness of the silicone gel inside the trident case

Hyperion makes a tpu case for their extended battery. It may work on other extended battery setups.

Here's a link to the TPU extended battery case on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008MMZUZS/ref=ox_ya_os_product
Nice to see my mod from the rezound still being used but I dont know if it would work out good on this phone, the trident logo is part of the rubber on this case instead of being part of the outer shell, so if you do cut it your going to see the battery. unless the battery is black then it might not look as bad. Im probably going to pick up a Kraken case soon and I might give it a try anyway
was thinking of tris this on the otterbox commuter. but i dont think the inner rubber layer is thick enough to compensate for the volume the battery will take up.
one thing to note 2 Samsung batteries back to back with stickers and one NFC Annette removed are thinner than some of the generic extended batteries ive looked into.
Interesting to know. If you have dimensions for the batter, please share. Thanks.

Watch Seidio.com they informed me via email that they are coming out with an extended battery and soon after a convert case (comparable to Otterbox, Ballistic in protection). I'm not sure if it will work with other manufactures batteries but it should.
@Italiankd. Perhaps the logo could be cut out and then placed back on the battery from the outside. I just checked out pictures of the Cyclops case, and its the same issue.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-TPU-B...Accessories&hash=item20c7308a1b#ht_896wt_1165
i could cut away the lil bit that needs removed for the extended back to fit a bam! what do you guys think? id think it would be best for me anyway as i dont want extra thinkness i just want to protect he screen from drops. so only the sides need a bit of protection.
I bought the one on the Gillebob's Mobilefun UK link, from Hong Kong directly. They have higher capacity better models. Mine was 2200 mAh model and cost me only $40 delivery included. I do not keep it on the phone all the time since it is bulky. When I need some power I connect the phone and use it while charging it my battery. It is very handy and doec not affect the signal quality or the NFC. I keep it charged and ready for any occasion. Check the pics and if you are interested contact me. :good:

someone was doing tests on it, and found that it will not fully discharge into the phone's batt (seems logical, you can never empty a battery into another battery)... so what you end up with is:
a case that is larger in every dimension than the hyperion 4200mAH (even with the hyperion extended battery case)
and an end result of less than 4200mAH usable juice.
but you can easily disconnect it, for streamlined (albeit caseless) pocketablility.

I have been using it for about a month now and as it has been said it discharges around 85% to the phone battery. There is always one light remains even if it stops charging the phone.
My phone goes around day and a half with it's own juice and if I need power on the go when I go to beach or something this case comes very handy. I slip it on when I am on the road and if I need the power I just push the button. When I am out of the car, I slip the phone out and I do not have the bulkiness with me. I am happy and waiting for the 4500 mAh one now.
