I'm running the 8/30 stock 2.2 Froyo XAndroid build. I was under the impression that Froyo had built-in Wifi Tethering capabilities, but I can't seem to find that under any of the menu options.
Is this present somewhere and I'm just blind or was it removed from the build for some reason?

Cool, thanks. I will try that app out.
Is this the native Froyo one or is this a 3rd party apk?
Is there any reason it was removed from the stock Froyo build?
I think the 'built-in' tethering was for USB, not wifi...
I have an option in the default settings app that has tethering, but only for USB. Since USB is relatively useless to us, the only way to tether is wifi.
I'm not sure who built that tether app, I want to say stinebd. Not positive tho. That app is provided by an XDA dev tho, not Google or HTC...

It seems like Froyo is supposed to have another built-in tethering over wifi option. You can see screenshots of it around the net:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...wifi-access-pointmobile-hotspot-capabilities/
But on our Froyo when I go to that screen I only have USB.

Meh, devs probably just disabled it... not sure. That APK should work flawlessly tho... always did for me, even if my phone did heat up like a fireball. I also found that it would discharge the battery faster than my USB port could charge it... Beware.

it works great doesn't get too hot and the charger keeps up just fine. I use it to get net on my ipad!
hey guys, my phone is rooted ofc.... but I cant seem to find a tethering app that supports usb tether? its all wifi, my pc does not have a wifi card so its out of the ? unless i buy one. Id like to just use USB tethering i tried pda net but it drops connection constantly. Does anyone know an app that allows usb tethering thats for rooted phones? High speed internet is not availible in my area believe it or not lol and im paying sprint for the pam plan..... thx guys!
I think it requires a custom kernel, so there were a number of the Eclair custom Kernels/ROMs that supported it and had an app built in. The original ACS ROM comes to mind. I believe however to get it on the Froyo ROMS we need to wait for the souce and custom kernels.
Have you tried the app "pdanet"? I haven't tried it my self, but its supposed to do just that while bypassing carrier (read: sprint) blocks.
It worked great on my blackberry.

Easytether is a really good one.
Or since you're rooted, try one of the custom leaked froyo roms that has native USB tethering built-in.

Used before Wireless Tether
Does anyone know which froyo ROMS have the ability to usb tether. I use this on two computers, and wifi on a third. The lack of usb teething has kept me from going to 2.2. But with delay after delay, I think it is time to make the switch! I just need a ROM that will allow me to do what I need to do.. If I have to wait, then I guess I have to wait.
ive searched for this as well and no froyo roms will let you usb tether, im using sydicate rom it has usb and wifi tether built in also lets you 4g usb tether. i am anxiously awaiting froyo 4g tethering....

I would jump to the syndicate rom, but there is way too many garbage apps in it i will never use and after using mobile ap i will never goto adhoc wireless tethering, i dont think im even going to get the official froyo until mobile ap works!!

So I've been searching around and haven't found much of an answer in regards to G2 and being able to use the computer to access the internet. I know when I was using the Sense Rom, it had the capability of accessing the internet through the USB connection. I currently have CyanogenMod 6.1.1 and was wondering if the capability was still there as I'm currently throttled by T-Mo by torrenting too much. (Should've read more recent info about the throttling defeating method). Any ideas? Any apps or solutions I can use as my work has a fast cable connection and I'd like to use that as opposed to the currently capped speeds of 0.05 Mbps.
Found this doing a quick search.... but you need to use "reverse tether" as your search term.

Wonderful! I'm surprised that eluded me, that didn't even cross my mind.
Reverse tether, huh.
Thank you!
Anybody find an alternative for mac? Have been searching, but no succes so far..
Thanks
I actually found this as it applies to USB tethering as I'm just using my work computer:
http://blog.mycila.com/2010/06/reverse-usb-tethering-with-android-22.html
I believe it works. I'm gonna test it out.
Damn, doesn't seem to want to work with Windows.
Yeah, the only thing that worked was the Sense Rom's internet Passthrough. Other than that, anything with Cyanogen and Windows doesn't seem to want to work. What is in the Sense Rom that's missing from Cyan that makes it capable of doing so?
Just bumping.
Hey guys
I treid today to use the wifi direct function but i cant configure like the sgs2,.
Tryin to send a movie from a sgs2 to my GN but it didn't work anyone an idea or some help
Thnx in advance

Same here. This morning I tried to setup Wifi-Direct on GN but was a no go. My SGS2 has Wifi direct configuration where you can name your device and setup password etc plus scan for other devices. GN however doesn't have anything like this and you can only turn it ON or OFF. SGS2 scanned for 2 mins and wasn't able to see GN.
Do I need any applications or is there something that myself and OP is missing?
I tried this this morning with a coworker who has a GN too but couldn't figure it out. I also tried the beam thing which says you can just magically hold them back to back and it works? Are there apps that need to be installed to get these things working?
Anyone have any links to literature on beam and wifi direct?
Bump.
This thing does seem odd enough to be worthy of some bumping.

It's a new technology that should allow compatible devices to connect to each other over wifi to transfer files without an access point. Pretty much an ad hoc type network.
I would assume we should be able to use it to connect to other GN but it MAY just be OS support and we need an actual application to make it work?
Bump. This is incredibly annoying.

Beam works fine. Try opening a homepage, and it will ask to transmit when touching another Nexus
Sendt fra min Galaxy Nexus
Seems like maybe they have only baked the API into the OS, but we need devs to create apps that make it useful, based on the Platform Highlights for 4.0 and the Demo app they released. Bummer. Some patient waiting to do, I guess.
I've searched the market for a "wifi-direct" app but there doesn't seem to be one.
Anyone else found anything?
Apparently not a very popular option among people out there.
bump. ytd nite trying to transfer all the songs and ringtones from my GalNote to GalNex using wifi direct, then dunno how to proceed cz totally cant find any settings or configuration in GalNex. enabled both wifi direct, den GalNote can detact my GalNex but failed to connect :X
Bump. My brother has sgs2 and I looked dumb trying to try wifi direct....nothing happens. No options besides on/off
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Me too, I tried setup my gn wifi direct, but it w/o any setting, then i use my bro s2 to search my gn mobile, s2 search the name called android xxx, i think this is my mobile, bcs when i off my gn wifi direct, s2 cant search any mobile, when i tried connect my gn mobile, but finally after i wait over 2 mins it still not success.
I think we can conclude if you need to check with forums on the internet and still haven't started transmitting anything two weeks later, it's not a very "direct" sort of technology.
So people at the office have Wifi-direct and I have Android beam. And neither works with each other.
This is Android-awesomeness right now.
Anyone found out how it works? sorry for the bump but good be very useable...
I haven't tried this but it is at least a suggestion. Try opening the gallery, opening a picture and then hitting the share button. Maybe there is an option in there for wi-fi direct?
EDIT: Nevermind. Looks like I mis-understood what this feature was.
Check out this to see if it helps?
http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/WiFiDirectDemo/index.html
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/wifi/p2p/package-summary.html
"remember that the feature is supported only on Android 4.0 (API level 14) and higher versions of the platform. " So looks like you have to connect to another device running ICS
wifi is there but not functional yet
guys in galaxy nexus the capability to use WIFI direct is there but not programmed and left to be added as an add on or so .. developers need to make a program or even a rom to enable this feature but most likely google will adapt the samsung software for wifi direct just like SGSII ..
hope someone just develop it soon
Yep it's purely an api for developers to use in order to connect to the same app(or another one with an official api) running on another device.
Google may very well add this into the gallery and so on, but for now it's a developer option. The implementation on the sgs2 on the other hand does not allow for developers to add in AFAIK and it's purely for use in the samsung apps.
I compiled and installed that WifiDirectDemo app and it doesn't really work. The GN and SGS2 see each other but the connection does nothing.
Hello Guys,
I am having WIFI Tether issues with any custom AOSP or AOKP rom. Installing a touchwiz related rom somehow resolves the tethering issues.
I've trying all the usual steps before installing a custom rom including wiping everything, factory reset and all that good stuff. But the native tether wont work on these roms. I tried the wifi tether apps in the app store but no success there.
However, what really gets to my nerves is that my daily driver is 4.1.2 liquid smooth rc7 version of the rom which i assume is based on aosp does allow wifi tether but only through the app in the app store. The native app continues to fail.
Someone once told me to install the wifi driver for the phone. Is that possible? If so how? By the way i am running a rogers s3 which is the at&t equivalent in US.
Also, just so you guys know, my other devices do pick up the wireless set up by my phone's tether, but it wont connect to it. password or not, it takes forever to connect and eventually fails.
Any advice?

If you carrier is Rogers, you need to make some mods to tether 4G (H+, 3G will work w/o mods). There's a post about it somewhere in Task's AOKP thread, which I believe a search should find it. Google can also help.
Same issue here, Rogers LTE tethering didn't work and tried to google and find the mods as posted.
couldn't find the mods.
Please advise.

It's dependent of the device receiving it. If it's too old or it's drivers are too old it won't get the speed it should. Also tethering shares the connection, therefor, you won't get full speed on the receiving device.
Could be so many things actually that's it's hard to troubleshoot.

Your S3 doesn't really matter here as much as the device receiving the connection.
