how do i enable wireless n on rooted evo 4g 4.54.651.1 android version 2.3.3
underhardware info i only see 802.11b/g thats why im asking
I remember a long time ago that the evo's wifi chip can't do 5ghz wireless N, it can however do 2.4. Not sure if it needed anything special on the stock rooted rom but on cyanogen i can see mine @ 2.4ghz
From what I have read in the past EVO's used to have N drivers but were later taken away. I know most sense roms have fixes that get N jamming again. Check out tommys classic for one

I've tried the stock rooted Froyo 2.2, Ava Froyo 2.2, and OMJ Froyo and the all work great (thanks everyone) but seems like Android WiFi Tether doesn't work on any of them. Is anyone experiencing this?
Actually WiFi Tether works but my laptop can't catch the signals whereas it does on OMJ 2.1fine.
same here
I unfortunately have to agree with you...wireless tethering just does not work yet with this new kernel. I have tried all the same HTC froyo roms as well... I can broadcast and my WiFi device can see it and try to connect but cannot get an ip address ..always 169... I hope this gets fixed soon
I don't use tethering that much anymore (now that I'm not in high school) but once I start college next month I'll need it more than ever, so idk if I should flash 2.2 yet. From everything I've read nobody's gotten it to work on any froyo roms yet.
first, q and a, not development, is where this should have been posted.
second, i'm on cm6 nightly 7/29, with the new radio and wimax flashed over it. i had no problem at all using the froyo hotspot (obviously not sprint's, bc no sprint packaged material is on the cm6 aosp release). it's not 4g, but it works. i tethered my ps3 with no issues at all.
im in same boat... once i head back to college i'm going to want to take advantage of the unlimited 4G... and without wifi tether thats going to suck.. hopefully someone can figure this out -
maybe someone will make a kernel with it enabled based on whatever in 2.1 that allows it ...?
does PDANET work? anyone who upgraded?
this is in wrong section but I used version 2_0_5-pre4 and it works fine. right now on Stock Froyo rooted but switching to Fresh 3.0 beta 2 in a few min
cyanogenmod's rom has working tethering. doesn't have 4g or sense, but wifi tether works, as does everything else.
werid
weird, still not working for me, I am going back to 2.1 OMJ for now, I need my free 4G WIFI TETHER DEVS!
I don't really care about tethering, but can you get any of the fps "fixed" kernels to work on any of the 2.2 roms?

Does the wireless tethering capability that comes stock with Froyo not work for you? Works fine for me in CM6.
Need some time?
The leak has only been released less than 2 days therefore obviously still have a lot of issue with old APP. just give the Developers sometime and I am certain they will come up with something. Beside the leaked 2.2 floating around is not really a final copy anyway so what's the point of working so hard on something that will be replace in a few days. Think all the Developers should just give themselves a beer, sit back relax to calm down their nerves so that their brains will be working at 100% when the final release come out.
Oh,

Didn't try that but does that work with 4G too? (if you didn't sign up for 4G?)

Can you give specifics of your setup? I tried the Evo-Froyo-2.2-Rooted-Stock-3.26.651.3-Deodexed ROM (with latest radio + wimax) but could not get version 2_0_5-pre4 to work. It starts wifi tethering BUT my laptop cannot find /discover it.
Thanks.

Me too.. yes sir.. it no work
he is probably on cm6. you cant really compare the two roms since sprint has its hand in locking up a native feature of the device for profit. we probably need the kernel tweaked by one of the devs in order to get this working.
Yeah, my laptop cannot see it either.

Everyone with an Evo on Sprint is "signed up" for 4G. It may not be available where you are at, but you are paying for it and "signed up" for it.
i ended up purchasing pdanet for tethering. was only 18.95. to be honest this phone is great, but we all know the battery's shortcomings. im ok with killing 2 birds with one stone by tethering usb and charging the phone at the same time . Any solution is cheaper than sprint's recurring tethering charge.
Does pdanet allow tethering over 4g in a 2.2 rom? If so, what speeds are you getting?
I had heard that the incredible was going to get 802.11n in the froyo update. I am running the froyo with patches and am on the unrevoked s-off train. Couple of questions:
1. How do I check if i have just b/g or b/g/n?
2. If I don't have N yet, how do I get it on? I saw on some droidforum that it was enabled using a hack but i am afraid to try it if that hack was specific to 2.1 least I should brick my phone.
do you have a Wireless N router? change your router settings to N only instead of mixed. If your Incredible connects to your network, well....
if you have froyo... you have wireless n... end of story... now it just matters if your router is capable of wireless n
Thanks people. Did not realize even the leaked froyo roms were n enabled.

Hi, hope I post this in the right place, This is a rare occasion when I have a problem that no one has posted before me. Anyway here goes. HTC Incredible-unrevoked forever- stock 2.2 or virtuous 2.6 themed with revolution- either way since the 2.2 update I cannot connect to WIFI at my school. I can connect everywhere else on N, at school I can view the networks but it will not connect. I talked to the Network Admin. there and he said they have not changed anything in a year so, Its defiantly the phone. It did work at school pre 2.2 update. The Admin. there said they run a gigabit multi stream network. Some peoples laptops mine included do not work there either. he said you must have a multi-stream network adapter. Anyway so my question is since it used to work is there anyway i can get it working again without giving up 2.2 and reverting to 2.1- because there is no way I'm giving up 2.2. thanks for reading my long post and anybody s help would be appreciated.
The Incredible only supports SISO (single in, single out) so, no, you won't be able to connect on the N network.
thanks for helping out. do you know if i could revert back to the wifi protocol for 2.1 it worked then. basically could i disable N
It should be backwards compatible with B and G.
I thought so too, but I was able to connect everyday when I was on 2.1 b/g specific now with N enabled I can view all the networks but not connect. It's crazy. I am barely into my first networking class so I don't know the benefits, if there are any to multi stream all I know I have a $850.00 Samsung laptop and droid Incredible that cannot connect it. By the way I'm a non- traditional student. I'm 31 so i have to buy my own toys+ pay the mortgage.
I have previously posted on how my WiFi was only working via a ****ty app.
Now I have some more info that makes me beleive that our home wifi router is the cause of that.
I went to my friends house and WiFi worked completely normal there, so it must be the routers fault right?
I have also reflashed the radio, so it probably isn't it's fault.
It all started happening when I updated to the OTA 2.2
Any help on how to fix this?

what about flashing a custom rom?
Well, I'm running CM7 with 2.3 and it's still the same :/
I don't have pc wifi to experiment with. But I will try to tell something.
Wifi on wildfire has the support of b and g networks by default. So no wifi "n" network on wildfire by default. There is a chance of difference in these network types between ur wifi and ur friends wifi, such that it works only with ur friends one.
And I think I saw somewhere in development section that someone made wifi "n" network working on wildfire. But Im not curious about it since I don't use it.

But what's really odd, is that it worked like it should on stock 2.1, so obviously 2.2 ****ed something up...right?
I got my DINC shortly after they became available in May 2010. If I recall correctly, the OS at launch was 2.1.
It wasn't too long before 2.2 was pushed as an OTA upgrade. Maybe September of that year, ish? (Maybe I'm mis-remembering, and it launched with 2.2 and the OTA upgrade was to the first version of 2.3.)
Regardless, one thing I thought was odd about that first OTA "upgrade" was that while my DINC supported 5GHz 802.11n with the original OS, that capability was removed from the "upgraded" version. Only 2.4GHz n was supported.
The OS has been updated OTA again since then, and today of course there's CM9 and there are even JB ROMs available.
However, I've never seen 5GHz 802.11n supported since the launch OS.
What gives? Clearly the hardware supports the capability. Why have none of the custom ROMs re-enabled that support? Is that something that the community is reliant on HTC to deliver GB, ICS, or JB drivers for, and if HTC never does, then we'll never have that capability back?
Just curious....

I wasn't aware the phone ever supported 5ghz WIFI-N. You are right that the Dinc launched with 2.1 (Eclair) and had an OTA to 2.2 (Froyo) later that year. We didn't get GB until November 2011.
Looked up bcm4329 (our wifi chipset) and it supports 5ghz n. Have you tried my latest gingertiny kernel on sense to see if it will connect at 5ghz to a n router?

I have tried it and it does not even see the network. It will only connect to a 2.5 N network at a max 72mbps. I have even tried to manually connect to it, but it just tries to connect over and over again with no success. It would be totally awesome if it would work though.

Thanks for clarifying the history--I couldn't remember exactly.
And I may be mis-remembering the exact sequence of events. Doing some Google searches, it sounds like N support wasn't present in 2.1...that was touted as a new feature in 2.2, from what I read.
I did not have an N router when I first got my phone, but when I did get my N router, I would swear that I remember being able to see both the 2.4 and 5GHz SSIDs on my phone. I remember setting up my wifi so that I had my clients "compartmentalized", with the router set to support N-only devices on 5GHz (my phone and laptop), and the 2.4GHz net was set to support legacy G devices as well as N.
At some point, I'd swear an OTA update broke my 5GHz support on the phone. I distinctly remember lamenting about the loss to a friend at work!
I'd swear that I'm not dreaming this, but now that I'm looking I can't find anything in Google referring to the DInc ever having 5GHz support.....am I going insane? I wish someone else would jump in and say, "No, I used to have 5GHz support on my phone, too!"
