Hi All,
I have been looking to buy one of these but they are not easy to find. I am in Australia and the only place I ahve found that has them so far is MWave (http://www.mwave.com.au/newAU/mwave...PWKKCCUZ8S6R8LTLJFRIXMTXU3FGUV2I&sku=37081221)
Does anyone know any other Aussie, US or even Chinese based sites that might have stock at a reasonable price? and have stock!
Cheers
As far as I know Sandisk is still selling these exclusively, their stock levels evaporate rapidly each new batch that comes along at the present time. You can get it from the US or UK online stores, they will only ship in those respective countries though, so for the US one do what I did and use Shipito.
Their price is $199US, which is obviously not particularly reasonable, but much better than the scalpers prices I've seen on places like Ebay. If you see them cheaper than that I'd be deeply suspicious of them being fakes.
I was looking for 32gb card myself but after i couldn't find class 6 or higher.
and according to the forum using the app2sd application will work better on class 6 and above.
so I'm afraid that the 32 GB card will cause issues with the app2sd.
I am new to Android and only know very little about rooting. What exactly is app2sd? Is this reliant on having fast read speeds for your SD card?

There is only Class 2 32Gb cards at this point in time, should not have any affect on app2SD at all... Theres a lot of baseless speculation about different performance of Class 2 and Class 6 cards in the phone, think about it, how often is your phone going to need data at rates faster than 2MB/sec from the card?

It lets you run apps from your SD Card... as the name suggests
I just bought a cheap one (16Gb Class 10) from nortsandones.com.au - try searching on staticice.com.au to get an idea though it doesn't show whether or not they are in stock.
I must get around to reading up on the whole rooting / app2sd thing. Just don't want to have to reflash my the rom on my phone, I quite like the setup of HTC Sense on the Desire, however I would like to be able to uninstall some of these Telstra apps.
Anyway I might hit up the computer swap meets this weekend and see if anyone is peddling the 32GB cards.

Not sure exactly where you are but if you're thinking North Rocks market, don't bother. I was there last weekend and nothing over 16Gb and all class 4 or below.... very disappointing.
Yeah, I built a ROM without all the Telstra crap but won't be updating it as I have no time to 'support' it. You're better off using one of the more 'advanced' ROMs around here. Either that, or use the MoDaCo online kitchen to build your own custom ROM. I haven't used it yet myself (am using the dsixda kitchen) but it looks pretty sweet. The MoDaCo online kitchen will build a ROM with all of the features you need. You can even upload your own custom set of apps.
Was going to check out Box Hill (VIC) Swap Meet. I haven't been there for a while but from memory they always had a few vendors selling memory cards at good prices.
As the title says, I've started a petition to Google to include memory card slots on future nexus devices and to encourage other manufactures to do the same. Please check it out and sign the petition.
Also, if a wise and powerful mod saw fit, I think this could be worth a sticky.
http://www.change.org/petitions/google-include-memory-card-slots-in-nexus-devices
note: if you don't agree or simply don't see a need for memory cards then just don't sign. Please don't post negative comments in this thread.

Not trying to be negative but what's ur biggest gripe not having this option?I get no mass storage which sucks and if ur phone takes a dump ur outta luck however its not bothered me to the point of wanting to make them change it.really its like buying a car if you don't like one pick another.well that's just my 2 cents anyways
but...but...but...having no SD is faster and cheaper...

My biggest problem is that I just don't see the reason not to have it. Other than the iPhone, pretty much every smartphone has had some kind of memory slot for years until recently. Having it is cheap and takes up very little space. Why limit users? Why not allow them flexibility?

Why complicate things with an extra slot? Why slow things down with external storage? Why? It's not only easier for developers, but for consumers too. You never have to worry...its just there. You don't have to go "Well, VZW only gave me a 2GB SD lets go spend another $30 on a 64GB"...its just there and most consumers need that cause most consumers are, sorry, dumb.

I'm sorry, but that post is just dumb. (Not you, your post.) How can it complicate things?(*That's a dumb statement.*) I think even the older generation knows what a sdcard is and how to use it in a mobile device, camera, etc.. so I know the younger generation knows. What can be complicated to some, is hooking up your phone up to the computer and browsing through all of those folders trying to find where their pictures are saved. (*Most wouldn't look in the DCIM folder.*) Why slow things down? I spent an extra hour or so at the Verizon store waiting for them to transfer all of my pics, songs, etc...off of my sdcard, when it could have taken me 2 minutes to the transfer the sdcard from my old phone to this one. (*Again, dumb statement.*) I guarantee you most people are using the same 16/32 sdcard they've had from a previous phone and they either sell or put the new one they get with a new phone away for storage. Not to mention how APPS2SD has saved plenty of people space on their internal memory and whatever other benefits that comes from that. Sorry, but I just can't let you call me a dumb consumer because I want options. If you ask me, a dumb consumer is one who doesn't want more options.
Guys, there really is no reason to debate or argue this. Either you support it or you don't. If you do, sign the petition, like the page, and post something positive.
If you don't, please just leave well enough alone (like I said in the original post).
You could just buy a phone that does have an SD card slot. They don't have a gun to your head. Google is moving away from expandable storage.
I don't think Google plan to add micro SD cards in the future as we head towards a cloud based storage system in the future, so if you want an SD card, you'll most likely have to buy a non nexus device, this rant won't do anything much
I don't know if it's that people don't read or if my expectations are just to high. *sigh*
If anyone has anything positive to say, please say it.
No negativity here just opinion. I think manufactures should just include more built in storage. Flash memory is way faster than sdcards and I think that if there more of it, space would stop being an issue.

1. Not everyone want's to store their information on other peoples servers.
2. That's only valid if I have a high speed connection everywhere and unlimited use of it.

The only problem with this is that, the more the storage, the more the price of the phone. Imagine how much a 64 GB phone or tablet is going to be. I'm pretty sure at some point buying a 64GB sdcard would be cheaper. Plus, when you spend more money on that new 64 GB device that you want, now you have to spend all of that time saving it to the cloud or transferring it from the old device to the new one. Now when your space in the clouds begin to get to full, you now have to spend a monthly/yearly fee for more space. Sorry, but I don't see the benefits.

Most Excellent point.
Fighting the forum is probably not the best plan.
Screw memory cards, where is my dvd-rw nexus??
I knew I should have gotten it. But wasn't sure at the time if I needed that much space. With stock, it just kinda gets eaten very quickly and cannot move apps to SD card. I regret buying a 16gb model.
Then sell it and get a 32GB
Whoever regrets buying it, i doubt would still be here buddy so go post such thread elsewhere. You can move apps via third party app btw. And u mind sharing how many apps u have installed cuz i got 120 and still there is plenty of storage left. (Trying really hard not to call u a troll)
How do you eat up ~10gigs in apps??

I bought a 16 gig sd card to replace the 2 gig hold over from my Vibrant. Does me well.
T-Mobile Galaxy S 3, stock and rooted.
Have you ever though about Custom room? works well or everyone and most of the geeky Android users are now on custom rom, it will give you freedom of space, you can install your App anywhere you want but remember that some Apps are bound to install in phone memory, you cannot do anything about that because it's better on phone memory.
Rest, you can install anywhere you want, it's up to you.
You checked "Yes this is a question"
Guess where it belongs?

I'm just wondering how many people thought the 16gb model was smaller than it should be. With stock, there's a lot of bloat. I rooted last night and installed FrostyJB and love it. I'm going to get a 32gb soon. I love the Galaxy S3. Its amazing. I will never go to another manufacturer. Been here since the Vibrant. Never going to leave.
And I didn't think this would be worthy of Q&A. Sorry if I posted in the wrong place.

Why? Why? Why? Put a case on it now and wrap in bubble wrap for the rest of the week.
I got the 16 and totally forgot how Samsung divies up their storage. 16 - 2gb for RAM - 2gb for data/apps = 12.05gb left. Had I remembered that, I would've definitely bought the 32gb.
So it goes. I have a 32gb card but it supports 64, so no worries atm. I have a 32gb tablet with a 32gb SDcard and a keyboard dock with a 32gb full sized SD. More than enough storage for me.
Doesn't S3 accept USB flash drive through adapter, so you can get up to 80GB of storage.
I forget where I read it but there's an app or setting or something that switches your phones system to using the external sd card for EVERYTHING. So basically for the $30 sd card you just got a 32gb phone.
I don't regret it one bit. Best phone I've owned.

As you guys know (or if you don't, you will now) that many manufacturers are releasing phones in which do not have an external SD card and are banging us over by providing really low storage option inside of phones. What got me thinking is that there is a 64GB SD card on sale for 40 bucks at certain retailers and i wanted to buy one and then i came out with the thought that, almost every new phones coming out doesn't have a slot for the SD card. Sure the s3 does but i wont have the s3 forever. What would you guys do?
I know some say, turn to cloud but lets be realistic (at least here in the states). For starters, t mobile doesn't have the best coverage meaning internet is not available everywhere which means if you go visit grandma's farm, you are bored to death and forced to play with cows or ride horses (although riding horses should make you put your phone down lol). Lets say you have glorious verizon with its "great" LTE network and coverage. Well then you are stuck at 2GB or what ever plan you have. point is that you are stuck, so once over the threshold, you are going to get rocked with a fee.
Taking a more personal look, my SD card consists mostly of music (7GB, 800 songs and counting..I like my songs high quality ala 320kbps mp3/aac or 1000kbps Flac), I have 2 nandroids (1 for stock TW JB and the other for AOSP...you know these can make dents on the SD card, apps that require large amounts of data on the SD card.) so right off the bat, i dont need a 64 gb but i know in the future (give or take 2 years, ill HAVe to go that high.)
What are your thoughts? should i just get it anyway? what do you think can be done to get the attention of manufacturers about this issue? any other thoughts?
I'm pretty sure that Samsung has no plans to get rid of the sd card slot.

Being a professional photographer on the side... I will give you this advic - nothing less than a class 10 card, and nothing else besides sandisk or PNY
I've heard enough about how finicky the 64Gb cards can be that I decided to go for 32Gb. 32Gb is only $20. If $20 is still more than you want to spend, 16Gb is like, $10 or less. For $10, does it really matter if you're going to use it forever ? I mean, the phone likely cost many times that and has a limited lifespan of its own.
Just get whatever you're comfortable paying for.
I just bought a SanDisk 32G sd card, but it won't mount. When I try, it said blank sdcard or unsupported files. I tried formatting it but I get the same message. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am confused why the biggest concern for people when buying these things is simply cost. Sure you can pick up a 32 GB card for 10 bucks... But when it crashes on you a year from now, and the cheap ones typically do, don't come posting a thread here asking why it doesn't mount or why all of your stuff is mysteriously missing from your card. QUALITY people... Not quantity. Its like putting $30 tires on your Ferrari and wondering why it doesn't handle the way it is supposed to. I have had my PNY class 10 card for almost 2 years now with no issues, and yes it was a little more expensive but it is way more reliable than these cheap ass Kingston and no name class 2 or 4 cards that people throw into these things.
Both of the sandisks I have owned have crashed on me. A 16 and 8 GB. Never again will I cheap out on SD cards. Its not worth losing 2 years or a year's worth of data.
I've been buying 32s and compatible 64s every chance I get.
SD slots will be with us for the long haul.

I totally disagree! I don't think Nexus phones set the standard. I do understand that Google would like to gently nudge us all into using the cloud, but I will go kicking and screaming all the way. I hope they come to their senses and support choice like they should.
Get it.
I think you should get it. You might need it down the road. And even if you don't need it right away, it's still be handy to have. I have a 16GB card now, but I'll get a 32 or higher later on.
And you're right, these lack of SD slots are crazy.

I think the bigger question is whether we should start training ourselves to use the cloud rather than relying on our sd cards. But I still say the answer is no. Samsung is a big enough player that they can dictate design rather than be dictated to. I don't think they'll abandon these removable parts anytime soon. Maybe in 5 years, Samsung will have their own cloud offering and will force us to use it in lieu of local storage. MAYBE.

I think we really lack the infrastructure to go cloud-only for things like music and movies. The cell towers aren't everywhere - many people can't stream everything even if they want to. People still want to watch movies or listen to music on an airplane without having to pay (or compete for bandwidth if the air carrier is nice enough to let people have at it for free).
I think there are many valid situations when the cloud is simply not an option.

It sounds like an issue with your phone. Do you have the problem with other cards as well? The mechanism to eject its part of the phone hardware and really not related to the card. My card ejects fine. I just have to push it in and it will then be ejected...

After ATT has screwed me (took away my $10/mo media net unlimited data for my iphone4), I've decided to switch to Sprint and switch to the GS3, since who knows when the iphone5 will be jailbroken. Plus I really want to play with Android. That said, Amazon Wireless has the 16gb version for $0.01 and the 32gb version for $49.99. So, is double the amount of space worth $50? I have 100gb google drive thanks to a Chromebook so I doubt I'll have any real issues.
Also, are there any issues that would discourage getting a 32gb model (e.g. Certain awesome custom roms only work on 16gb version, etc.)?
Thanks.

If I had a choice I would get the 32 gb version, I'm a storage space junkie. The 16 gb is more widespread so I see more development related to that. It does have a card slot and 64 gb cards work in it. I have only had this phone for about a month and have only run the stock rooted rom, so I'm not sure if the size difference matters with roms or not. Are the 16 and 32 so different that they are developed separately?
Also, OP, I and many others paid $50 for the 16GB about 3 weeks ago, which was a steal. I would drop $50 for a 32GB without thinking twice.

Also, OP, I and many others paid $50 for the 16GB about 3 weeks ago, which was a steal. I would drop $50 for a 32GB without thinking twice.

I don't think they are. Extra space is only difference.. And if i coulda got it i would have. I just don't need that much space tho lol.
I have the 16 gb with 32 sd card more than enough space .I got just about every gameloft game and still have room on my card plus the internal either way you go your still good because a 64 gig card is always an option.

Well then, I'll definitely spend the extra 50 on the 32 gig version for me. My mother and father are also on my plan, and they will each be getting a gs3, but the 16gb version. I probably won't put any custom roms on theirs, but I might just go ahead and root them so I can just email them .apk files of apps and they can install them.

Nothing like some good new-fashioned theft.

If it was easy you'd of hired the guy at Home Depot to to it.
You don't necessarily have to be root to install apks sent from your rooted device you would need it if your coping from /data/app or something like that I send ppl an apk that isn't on the play store all the time I'm the only person I know that has a rooted device but you don't have to root you other gs3 if your just going to be sending the apk thou email just my 2ยข

Go ahead with the 32Go, do not choose 16 !
If you choose 16, you will only have 11 Go of free memory, which is very small ! Install a GPS software with multiple countries maps, and a big game like Real Racing 2, and you will then loose half of your free memory ... And if you want to install apps on the SD card, there will be no perfect solution to do this.

i would totally go with the 32gb for that price. i do admit i am a space junkie. but having the extra space is always convenient. i've tried blazer rom and it was quite good. i moved over to freegs3 only because i wanted to try it out and then became addicted to it. haha. good luck!
Spend the extra money. It's worth it. I'm close to maxing my memory out. It's only 50 bucks.
