Yup, welcome!
Things are exploding all over this forum, great devs, great ROMs stock and custom.
I cannot stress this enough :
Read Everything before flashing Anything.
Please.
Start with QBKING77s videos on YouTube, he will show you everything you need to know about rooting and flashing this phone.
Most things are very easy on this phone, actually hard to brick, as long as you read first. There are some very easy "one click" rooting apps made by "sfhub" (genius), I would consider running stock rooted for a bit, get to know your recovery, get to know about the differences between the kernels and modems and ROMs. Then, flash something like Calkulins EL29 Tweaked, or Blazer, and others will have other suggestions but those are usually the most popular/stable/great support.
The exception is if you are thinking about flashing an Ice Cream Sandwich rom, Be Very Careful, Read ALL instructions and information very carefully first, ask questions in the right sections and threads, understand the acronyms and kernals/modems, be comfortable with ODIN before attempting. Seriously.
(i would provide links to some of that, but pain in the ass on the tapa. I think some of that is in my sig.)

Welcome to your new life.

Welcome to the world of Android, if you have downloads that you would like to convert from iTunes, look into DoubleTwist to move all of your movies and music to your Android phone
I have convinced 6 iDevice users to use Android and all but 1 like Android much better.
The community is very helpful with most anything you will face with your phone. Coming from an iPhone there will be some limitations that our phones won't do, I'm pretty sure you will find out that just because this phone can't do some of the things the iPhone can do, you will find out it can do things that your iPhone couldn't do!
Welcome to the forums and Android, you picked a great device to be your first Android too!

Blackberry 6 style ROM possible?

As the title states, is there a possible way of porting over a similiar Blackberry 6 styled ROM over? Although I am not a fan, the MIUI ROM is extremely popular and has an i*honeish feel to it and in some instances, can even be made to look like one.
I know there are theme's (not very good one's in my opinion) available on the Market, but i'm talking about having a similiar interface as that as what you would see on the new Torch, not just icons.
I'm currently running Myn's warm two point two Z beta and love this site as well as my DINC for it's awesomeness, but being an ex BBerry user, I think this would seriously present a challenge for some DEV out there looking for one and would be greatly appreciated by many on this site being that many have made the jump over the Android from BBerry.
Maybe i'm crazy and maybe this thread gets deleted, but there would certainly be nothing like this if created. Just a thought!
I think that this could certainly attract new users to rooting and ROM flashing, but as a recovering BB addict, I might have taken a lot longer to find all the other great ROM's which leverage all that Android can be...

I'd have to agree. My take on it is that if you really, really want the crackberry interface, then you should own a crackberry. Our Dinc's aren't iPhones, and they're not BB's. Trying not to be sounding rude, but maybe you bought the wrong phone?
I came to Android from BB, and have had them for years. At some point you just have to move on. Kicking and screaming maybe

I have MIUI because I for the longest time wanted an iPhone (getting one in Feb.), but theres nothing wrong with wanting. There isn't a phone on VZW running bb 6 currently, and simply wanting a phone that appears to look like bb 6 is what he wants. There isn't a WP7 on VZW and yet people make those themes and you all aren't *****ing at them.
Sorry man, there isn't one right now, but if you found enough theming elements you could probably make a close copy. Good luck.
Sidekick, thanks for backing me up. But in reality fellas I was simply posting the thread to see if there was any interest in pursuing development for such a ROM.
Even though I came from BBerry I dont actually want my awesome DInc to perform or be one for that matter, but you can't deny this wouldnt be a challenge to anyone wanting a change in developing ROM's.
This site is awesome and so is the work our Dev's do day in day out. Having said that, I dont want an iphone nor bberry, just simply presenting a challenge to my fellow colleagues

I don't know why you would want to disgrace your phone with a Blackberry rom. Blackberry OS is horrible. Only good thing I could see is it would actualy be on good hardware for once...

MIUI is soo popular considering it is an iPhone copy. I don't see why a proper WP7 or BBerry 6 ROM wouldn't be a hit. It's all about trying out new things and what not. Best of all, this would seriously represent such a challenge to any Dev out there and that is the reason we all love XDA right, because they do crazy things possible. I simply was throwing the idea out there to hear people's feedback on it. I love my DInc and wouldn't trade it for anything else, maybe except for the new Thunderbolt!

I'm sorry, but I'm a noob and I need help.

Hi there everyone, my name is Alex and I just got my first smartphone ever, an Samsung Galaxy S2 and I would be grateful if someone could help take it to another level. Root, optimize, enchance it's "power", so on and so forth. I will really appreciate all of your help. I just heard of you guys from a friend, and believe me when I say "I AM NOOB!!" I don't know anything about rooting/ unlocking/ jailbreak/ etc.
Please leave me a message.
With deep sympathy and respect,
Alex.
what version of the GS2 do you have?
there are different forums for some different variants here on XDA. Once you identify which version you have, you can go to that forum and sniff around. read as much as you can, and you'll figure everything out pretty easily
You should start by finding and posting at the CORRECT section. I'm very sure that all sections have their own guide on rooting and flashing.
Devices are kinda like cars... if it is your first.. spend some time exploring what it can do already before you get into making it do more. Then, when you know your way around a bit... dig in!

Very well said my friend
If this is your very first Android phone (nice choice by the way!), you'll want to spend at least some time familiarising yourself with Android and its workings before plunging into anything here. Some of the stuff available here for the GS2 is incredible, but it can also land you in a lot of hot water if you don't understand what you are doing before you try things.
Take your time and enjoy it 'stock' for a while. Learn what rooting is/does, pick a couple of 'favourite' custom ROMs, and read through their threads (entirely) before doing anything. This will give you a good awareness of what to expect as far as bugs and hiccups are concerned, and how others have got around them or fixed them.
This is a fantastic community, full of fantastic Development. Make sure you stick to the rules, post in the right places, and if in doubt... read!
Enjoy, and welcome to XDA

new Phone, new Root, new Questions

Hello (I assume) friendly fellow SGSIIE4GT owners!
New owner, coming from the Evo4G section most recently, been rooting n flashing HTCs for quite some time now, started with the G1, then Hero, finally the Evo...
HTCs offerings this year I found to be lackluster, so on a few recommendations from other longtime flashers, decided to dive into a SGSII, and holyfreakingcrap, this phone is fast/responsive/beautiful...
About to dive in, root this baby today, been over the wiki a bit, the procedure seems straight forward enough...
But have to admit, I don't understand much about the acronyms, procedures, nomenclature re: this phone. zImage? ODIN? Modems, wha? No AmonRa? All the ROM threads start with different sets of info (in the title), and mean little to me. (As an example, it seemed unclear to me that if I root, and then flash a BootImg/zImage + CWM (EK02), will it wipe my current data/apps/setup...?)
I am a fast learner, but don't want to spend three days poking around here before I start having fun, especially since the actual rooting method seems easy enough.
So basically, just wondering if any longstanding members might point me to a few threads I might have missed, general advice I should be aware of, points of warning, a "best ROM" or two?
Thanks in advance for reading what I am sure is a tiresome noob thread. ;-)
Honestly, the quickest way to get a feel for everything is to watch qbking77’s YouTube videos. He has one for everything.

excellent advice, thank you.
that was too damn easy.

So Confusing..

I'm still new to this device. I'm having issues figuring out which kernels go to which version of GB and ICS.
Which Kernels will work on EL29 only?
Which ones will work on ICS and GB (EL29)
Why are kernels and Recovery mixed together? Why not make it simple to understand and locate?
EL29 Kernel ver 1.3.3 GB only - Example. Now I know I can't use this on ICS, only version EL29 of GB. Oh and it's a Kernel.
Not a recoveryIcsv13.3..3.3kerneldotninerwtfz0rz.tar.zip. That makes it confusing.
Anyone able to offer any clarity or an decoder ring so that I may understand this better?
If want to try a new kernel for EL29 GB, I can't because I have not farking clue if I'm getting one with a recovery, if it's GB or ICS only etc.
If I want to try an ICS kernel, but use it on GB, I'm lost because I thought they weren't compatible but people are apparently doing it.
Also, recoveries. "Don't use hitman" seems to be the theme. Along with Touch CWM being another issue.
Rogue Recovery is hitman? or hitman is hitman?
While this phone is superior to the Evo3D, at least the development wasn't a greek VCR manual from 1928.
Zzzz
sounds like you need to do a lot more reading before you mess with this phone.
This Forum was always for Developers, not for Newbies, so its organized with that in mind..
there are other forums you may want to visit as well, where they cater more to novices; or, just do the smart thing, and don't mess with your electronic devices unless you are 99.99% sure you know what you are doing
Read and read and then read some more.....Samsung puts recovery in kernel nothing we can do about that ....most kernels will have a recovery in them ..these leaks are different right now...they are using ics 3.0 kernels on ics but not on GB ....the people you have seen are taking the radio fb21 etc .... Read and be safe don't be a brick

Isn't it better to know this stuff BEFORE you do something to break your phone?
I mean, you wouldn't want a surgeon to operate on you until he was sure he knew what he was doing, would you?
Its no different with this stuff; you'll be much happier if you build your knowledge about this thing before you go messing with it.
Its no reflection of your intelligence, its just a statement of fact about your current abilities as they pertain to this phone..

All the stock and stock repacked GB kernels can be mix/matched between the different stock GB releases. They will NOT boot for an ICS ROM.

By "work" I mean they boot and data works. Beyond that, you'd have to experiment to see if what you care about works to your expectations. In general things will work, but I obviously don't test everything, and the combination Samsung/Sprint tests is matched kernels and ROMs.

I'm buying this phone today. Coming from a NS4G. Now, I'm no noob when it comes to rooting/flashing/modding...however...the development for this device and the way you have to go about doing things with it are waaaaaay different. And I will agree with OP: it is confusing reading through some of this stuff, even for people with experience. But I also agree with some of the others: don't root or go beyond that until you have a good understanding of what you are doing.
As XDA has been very good to me I can say that the Nexus crowd is way more helpful to noobs, apparently.

its really only different if you are flashing LEAKED, non official roms..
The problem is that too many noobs with no idea what they are doing, don't want to spend anytime learning what they are doing, and hear about these ics roms, and just gotta have them..Then, they start flashing crap that they have no idea about, brick their phones, they post stuff all over the place, begging for someone to rescue them RIGHT NOW...
Its like getting behind the wheel of a car, with out taking drivers ed, or practicing, only bad things are going to happen if you do that..
There are tons of helpful folks here, with hundreds of "thanks", and thousands of posts, so obviously, there is a ton of cooperation and help going on here..
It just gets old, really fast, when 20 people ask the same question about a leaked, not even beta rom; and, to make it worse, the answer is usually a few posts ahead of theirs, or in the OP..
Too many people feel this sense of entitlement here lately, and, for those of us who are always helping, always offering our assistance, it gets pretty old sometimes..
Obviously, you know what YOU are doing, and, you at least took the time to get a basic understanding of your phone..plus, you've obviously read through these threads, and realize that it is a bit different to flash stuff on this phone.
Thats more than quite a few of the noobs here have taken the time to do..
Some people rely on others before they rely on their selves. That isn't always so bad, but I know it gets old. I probably won't mess with my Galaxy until I find exactly the ROM I want with everything working and I understand Odin a little better...the NS4G was sooooo simple...it's like they were begging you to root it. It was like get fastboot and adb then type a few things and boom, it's done. This is a bit more complicated and there isn't just a recovery you flash and leave on your phone to flash everything else(as far as I know)

well, actually there is; there are actually 2 different ones, depending if you are using a "released, el29" type of rom, or one of the "leaked" ICS type roms..
The conventional roms all have recoveries baked into them, so its simple to go into recovery, and flash other stuff
the ICS leaks are different than that, and can be a pain to flash back and forth
My friends with Nexus phones all agree with you on how much easier it is to flash stuff on their phones; I guess its all in what you get used to!
You'll love this phone, that I guarantee you!

Rogue Recovery is the recovery made and used by Team Rogue. Hitman Kernel is a kernel that Team Rogue put out with CWM Touch. That kernel is perfectly fine to use with any GB rom. The big issue is using Rom Manager and flashing a recovery from there, thats a big nono unless you like bricks.
Most kernel threads (i believe all of them actually) state wether they are Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich, either in the title or within the first 3 posts.
Like everyone says, read. True true read and you'll learn but how much he learn if all he reads is "READ NOOB"? I dont know everything but if you have questions feel free to pm me and I'll try to help you as best I can.

This is a community website, you don't have to be a dev to be on here or to mod your phone. How many members actually contribute by developing? 8%? That being said, you really do have to put in the reading/learning time. When you know what you're doing then you can ask specific questions for help that can be answered. Just my 2cents
Im just gonna say even for experienced modders/devs who have been doing this for a while (4+ years for me) this phone is quite confusing at first, i started hacking palm, treo family then pre, then moved to android with an intercrap i mean intercept, then the og evo, and now the et4g and the first day i was in this forum i was scratching my head like a lost kid looking at a chinese subway map. the setup of this phone in particular and the "codenames" are wayyyyyy different than the evo so i was lost for a few hours til i read thru a few ops and familiarized myself with all the new terms, but then again i have years of experince with phone modding and 2 decades experience with linux and windows coding and it was still like my first day of latin class with this phone having had a samsung device previously(intercept) did help with odin and such as it was similar to louziffers hacked swupdater for the intercept but if i was coming strictly from the evo i think id still be lost trying to root this phone

I feel like expressing myself about the roms and kernels available right now for S3;

I've been around since cyanogenmod was just another rom along with bugless beast and whatever the hell was running things on eclair/mytouch and ive compiled kernels hundreds of times back when slackware linux 3.5 was out so i feel like im somewhat of a vet and i appreciate the fact that i have a nice little linux device permanently connected to a broadband connection with so much support in a neat little package.
=)!
and yet i never say anything on XDA i just appreciate... unfortunately i cant post in the development forum because i dont say much ;/
big thumbs up to cyanogenmod for taking their work so seriously and being so persistent, you guys must really love what you do, trust me i know the feeling =]
i just got this phone last week and before i did anything i rooted and installed the latest CM with whatever kernel appealed to me in the dev forum and i thought seriously my screen was defective i had no idea it was just a rom/kernel issue so im glad that over with.
i updated to cm22, and the flicker started again when using the 4/20 KT kernel so ill just stick with cm20 +kt420 for now what an unbelievable combo!
and i'm kinda disappointed in AOKP every time i check the AOKP/task thread somebody is always complaining about something that doesn't work... AOKP used to be my favorite. (when the ICS days began atleast.. i loved it on my gnex)
and by the way... to people having problems flashing between kernels, when you flash a kernel, wipe cache/dalvik, then flash the rom again, then gapps, then the new kernel. kernels include more things than just addition lines of code nowadays and thats the simplest way to work around most issues i see people posting about.
that is all!
Somebody is always complaining about things not working? I see every post in my thread and I don't see what you are talking about. 99.9% of the people that post state how well everything works. Somebody is always complaining about things not working? I see every post in my thread and I don't see what you are talking about. 99.9% of the people that post state how well everything works. +1, agreed.
Just like the guy who wants to request a theme for a rom, that morphology has for that same rom.
READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Coming from the skyrocket which had a pretty good community I am really pleased with what developers do in their spare time and decide to share when it comes to this device.
There are so many options it can keep a flash junkie busy for a while.
Keep up the great work devs!

I love these threads....I have an idea: If you are disappointed why don't you step up and create a solution or make your own ROM? Its easy to complain about FREE work when you don't contribute whatsoever.
True, don't complain about something people spend all their time on and give away for free ...

We have a large dev community compared to many devices out there. I actually came from a galaxy nexus because I got bored of only aosp roms that were all pretty much the same.
(sorry, had to do it )
Tasks AOKP is by far the best ROM out there for the AT&T S3. I have run it longer than any other ROM i've tried and have had absolutely zero problems with it. I will never use anything else for this phone. Just my personal experience of course.
Whoaa guys ease up on the bashing... OP had only one sentence in his post that was negative everything else was positive.
I think everyone appreciates the hard work and time that devs put into all the different roms/kernels available out there.
Up until the late, I can agree that the 3.4 kernel builds (for any ROM including Tasks) weren't all that great which is why I was using CarbonROM with the BMS kernel (3.0).
But I updated to Tasks 4/23 and everything has been great...super super smooth.
Tasks updated kernel has been smooth. I'm running his newest now, flashes it a few hours ago and love it. The devs for the S3 are wonderful. So many more options than other android phones I've had in the past.

If I'm reading right, OP is disappointed in AOKP and Task's AOKP.... and hasn't tried them yet?
It takes me longer to download a ROM than it does to flash it, restore data and check out all the main features for functionallity..... and you're calling them out by name without trying them?
Gutsy move.
Nothing wrong with AOKP and we have a fantastic aosp community. They seem to be more active then the original development. If anything I'm disappointed with the lack of touchwiz ROMs. All and all. We have a good community and a good group of developers here. /end thread.

This thread sucks, I want the last 5 minutes back
3rd party ROMs are always works in progress. its not like anyone here is hiding the fact that these are all "in development". not all ROMs are "for" everyone, but that's the beauty of it, there's a flavor for everyone.
I personally prefer ROMs that are subtle improvements to the stock experience which give me a more enhanced version of what Samsung intended. BUT, there are times I'll think about getting a nexus 4, so I'll run a aosp/cm/aokp based ROM while scratching that itch. or those days I wished I had a note 2, we've got options with multi window and page buddy fully working.
if you don't like it, don't use it... simple as that. I've never critisized a ROM or developer if I don't "get" their work, that just means its not a good fit for me and I move on.

Huh?
1.) Looks as though you forgot something as simple as reading. Read my post again. If you consider any of that one post as bashing then I think you might need to check the emotional state you are in at the time that you read it.
2.) You're definitely not reading the OP. He pretty much stated that he hasn't even tried the ROM before judging it. That right there speaks for itself.
3.) Please do yourself a favor and grow up a little. Stirring up the pot with the highschool antics doesnt accomplish anything.
4.) Gold stars for you dude. Keep on contributing this wasteful drama here in a development site. That makes a ton of sense.
