[Q] cannot update cwm 2.5.0.7 to anything at all - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
well i bricked one SD card in the process so far, not bad
So, here is my problem. I got my RMA Desire back und rooted it with unrevoked. After that installed ginger villain, anyhow i wanted to install myself another ROM which required repartioning sd ext to a larger partition. Smart as I am, I saw that newer versions of cwm can do that for you, so i wanted to update my outdate 2.5.0.7 version to 5.xxxx. Hell it won't work, neither installing via ROM Manager nor installing via cwm itself. Not even via fastboot. No chance there either.
So there i sat, 1 o'clock in the morning and thought why not give some partitioning program a shot, worked fine with my harddrives. this is where i made the fat partition smaller, deleted the ext3 partition since i couldnt resize it, made a 1.6 gig ext3 partition and thought i was king of the hill. yall might know already that i bricked that sd card. Now running on the ****ty 4 gig original one.... that has no ext3 or swap at all.
So, now my question is, how can i update my cwm to something that isnt as outdated as my underwear?! And any way that i could unbrick my fine 16 gig sd card?
thanx in advance and apologies for any grammar or spelling mistakes.
cheers

Are you S-OFF? Please post fastboot output after flashing recovery.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk

Even tho i checked security off in phone with unrevoked, s-on states the post in Hboot.....
ahyhow.
Installing CWM_Recovery_5.0.2.3.carebear.jr0dd.zip in recovery gives me:
Code:
assert failed: getprp("ro.product.device") == crespo"
getprop("ro.build.product") == "crespo"
E:Error in /sdcard/CWM_Recovery_5.0.2.3.carebear.jr0dd.zip
Status 7
Installation aborted.
Guessing there should be standing desire not crespo.
Anyhow, trying to flash recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-bravo.img or recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.0.2-bravo.img via fastboot gives me this:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-bravo.img
sending 'recovery' (3054 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.440s]
writing 'recovery'...
(bootloader) signature checking...
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
finished. total time: 0.781s

Did you try flashing it again with signature check disabled? Be careful with this tho, if you bootloader gets messed up you phone will be unbrickable... Where did you get the recovery from?

I did try that.
Thanks for pointing me to S-OFF, that was my problem. I used aplharev to get to S-OFF and then flashed via fastboot cwm touch and now it is actually installed.
at the moment cwm is partitioning my sd card. so hopefully my desire will be up and running in the next half hour.
If anyone is having the same problems, feel free to ask.
for now i am happy

[Q] Restore & reroot Desire

Yelp! Now I'm stuck ;(
Recently I upgraded from OpenDesire 3.1.x to CyanogenMod 6.0.2. I did a full wipe. Everything seemed to be working, besides apps2sd, so I did that with a script I found at the cyanogenmod forums (fr_a2sd-something). After a bit of trouble it seemed to work, upon I made the terrible misstake of trying to restore my old backup of my ext4 partion. A terrible misstake.
After this I tried to do the S-OFF thingy for full r/w. But it failed (no brick, just a failure).
At this time almost all apps (including android apps) crashed at startup. No widgets worked at all. ADW became allmost unworkable with constant crashes.
In despair I tried to delete my apps folder from the ext4 partition, and now things got even worse. I decided I needed to reflash Cyanogenmod, but RomManager wouldn't start again. So I turned of the phone and selected "reboot in recovery. But to my great horror, it didn't restart in ClockWorkRecovery. It started in HTC recovery, and I now can't seem to reach ClockWorkMod to reflash Cyanogenmod (or any other ROM).
When I booted up the phone nothing worked at all. It is just a dialog-loop with a crash in com.android.acore. Re-adding my apps directory to the ext4 partition and re-booting didn't help.
My next attempt was to reflash ClockWorkMod (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img), but that doesn't work due to:
Code:
sending 'recovery' (4216 KB)... OKAY
writing 'recovery'... INFOsignature checking...
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
So my last hope was to re-root the darn thing with unRevoked 3.21. But the binary won't run on my Arch Linux:
Code:
./reflash: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
Any ideas on how to make my phone usable again? Before I brick it up completely.
Please, help a fellow android user in despair!
Were you on HBOOT 0.92? If so, have you tried flashing with a shipped rom as PB99IMG.zip from your goldcard? If you have a SLCD phone you might lose screen though; this guide will step step you through a black screen.

Hi all,
Im having a little trouble with my dhd. It won't boot up !
I can get into HBOOT, but thats it. (ie. no recovery CWM)
When trying to boot normally it hangs at spash screen.
so far i have tried:
- fastboot flashing (system.img dosn't flash (for known reasons))
- this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841890) (tried with 2 different RUUs)
everything seemed to go according to plan, but still exactly the same problem.
- I've even tried flashing back the stock spash screen via fastboot in preperation to send it back to tmobile/htc to fix BUT, despite fastboot telling me flashing was succsessful, i still have my custom splash!

Which cw recovery is installed?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
First question, what did you do immediately before you turned you DHD off, hence the reboot?
From the bootloader can you enter fastboot? You should be able to flash recovery from there. You mention "for known reasons" what are these?
Hi pwraggcan,
I'm not too sure? and I'm not sure how I can check either, as I can only enter hboot/fastboot.
AndyHarney,
As far as I can remember I was using my phone as normal. (no risky installs/flashes to speak of). Then overnight it ran out of battery, and now won't boot up .. ?
fastboot flash system system.img returns:
sending 'system' (410134 KB)... FAILED (remote: data length is too large)
finished. total time: 0.006s
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img returns:
sending 'recovery' (8701 KB)... OKAY [ 1.494s]
writing 'recovery'... OKAY [ 0.837s]
finished. total time: 2.331s
but when I choose 'RECOVERY' form hboot menu it still hangs on splash.

So you have recovery, and you're rooted, well I'd say install a ROM as ROMS flash system, boot and cache img files. Sending a 410mb file ofver adb seems a bit risky. Also, if you have no ROMs on the SD Card go into recovery, mounts and storage and at the bottom is usb or something.
MrYuiM,
I don't mean to act the fool, but I don't fully understand you're post.
"well I'd say install a ROM as ROMS flash system, boot and cache img files"
not sure how I can go about doing this? using fastboot?
"Also, if you have no ROMs on the SD Card go into recovery"
which ROMs do you mean? I have on my sdcard "LeeDrOiD_HD_V1.5.1.zip" and others. I also have some nandroid backups.
Currently, I have not found a way to enter recovery..
P.S I apologize for spewing my ignorance all over this thread.
Get PD98IMG.zip from my downgrade guide, put it into your SD card and go to the bootloader. Then tell us what what happens.
By the way, you still have fully warranty despite the fact that your device has S-OFF. There is nothing about software mods in warranty terms. For example mike1986 sent his phone to HTC's service center, it was S-OFF and it even had a custom ROM in it, and they did not complain.

When I asked HTC they were pretty stern on the fact that rooting voids their warranty despite it not being in the guidelines :/

To enter recovery turn your phone off completely and plug it into the charger, recovery will auto open. Also, everyone starts off somewhere.
But go with jkoljo first as he is more experienced
Hi jkoljo,
Downloading now,
It's also a big relief to hear that software modding dosn't effect warrenty *phew*

Good luck mate, report back on how it goes
Might be futile but you could try a different recovery. If you're s off it should work. Try a 2.x.x.x then a 3.x.x.x. flashing from fastboot, it could be that. If the pd98img doesn't work then it might be a faulty motherboard and htc will have to fix it.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I tried jkoljo advice, but still no dice! ... (hey that rhymes!)
One thing I noticed as it was checking SD card: -
SD Checking...
Loading...[PD98DIAG.zip]
No image!
Loading...[PD98DIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading...[PD98IMG.zip]
are those errors normal?!
just to clarify, after jkoljo's PD98IMG.zip update, I reboot and it hangs at my custom spash screen, just as before.
It's as if I hadn't tried to update/recover at all!
Anyways, Thankyou all for your help, assistance and advice.
I have to go out now, but ill be back tomorrow to try again.
It seems that you have to format your SD card. Do a full format to FAT32 (no quick format), and try it again.
Ok, formatted and tried again.
But same results as my last post.
I even tried with 2 SD's (4gb + 8gb).
Does this mean my phone is not recoverable..?
....I hope not..
oopes, delete this post please

Could you recommend one?
The only one I've ever known is CWM.
Also I don't have much faith in fastboot right now.
When I flashed my stock splash, it said 'OK' but never changed!
Thanks pwraggcan
Try flashing a different recovery while in fastboot.. Try the stock one first and if you can boot into recovery wipe data/factory reset.
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
recovery zip attached. good luck.
Thanks for the suggestion pwraggcan,
I tried that recovery.. and it flashed 'OK' but still no change from my previous attempts.
Soo... Shall I call this a write-off and let HTC deal with it..
Or are there any last ditch solutions I could be trying.
Jason9
As a last resort try the attached recovery. If this recovery doesn't work it's gotta be a hardware issue. I'm thinking if you backed up with a 2 series cw recovery then updated the recovery with rom manager to a 3 series cw recovery it won't let restore the backup. So, try the attached and fingers crossed, you're up and running. Probably won't sort it but definitely worth a try.

Did you root with alpharev?
If not do it and install alpharev recovery as you root it and will be fine.

You cannot root with alpharev! Alpharev seets you s-off. Before alpharev can do this, you need root access. This you get by rooting your phone e.g. with unrevoked. Alpharev does not have an own recovery, it is clockworkmod.
@Umair.K:
Did you root your phone already?
So you run unrevoked then alpharev? Or only unrevoked? Because with mine i had to run untrvoked then alpha to be able to use recovery

You have partition for CM7, so any sense rom don't have enough space in /system.
Repartition your phone (look in alpharev site) as sense (default) partition. /system must be 250mb

But could you give me a guide line on how to partition my sd card like that? Because I purchased the phone from someone else, and he had done all the work himself!
It would be really helpful! Thanks!
You cant partition your sd like that ... you should flash STOCK HBOOT... find it at Alpha Rev pages... and there you will find diferent HBOOT's and everything will be clear for you... You partition your SD for needs of diferent ROM's but when it comes to HBOOT there is only few of them... I suggest CM7 HBOOT.. the one with 130 Mb for system, but pay attention on which ROM you flash...

Alright thats quite clear but the instructions aren't quite clear on Alpha Rev's page!
It says "If you are already S-OFF, you can get our newest patched HBOOTs from here. (without going through the entire procedure again).
Please read the entire table and pick the partition table with the correct sizes for your ROM. One easy way to switch partition tables, is to nandroid backup,
and verify that the sizes of your backup are indeed the ones listed in the table (or smaller), and restore after flashing hboot"
-So afterwards I tried to use the PB99.img by placing it on the root of my sd card and flashing it via recovery, but didn't work!
-Then i tried to use "Android Flasher(1.76)" to flash the new hboot, but that failed aswell! :S
So do i have to repeat the whole S-off procedure again or do i need to use cmd and type in commands to flash a new H-boot? This is getting confusing :O!
If your phone is s-off, you do not have to s-off again. To recognize if your phone is s-off:
1.) Splash screen is the joker
2.) If you boot into hboot (starting with pressed volume down button) first line should be "alpharev" and in the second line the last should be "s-off".
When you use android flasher, you must not use the file PB99_IMG-XXX.zip. You have to use the file bravo_alphaspl-xxx.img ("xxx" stands for the hboot you want).
When you use the method with PB99IMG_XXX.zip, you have to rename the file into PB99IMG.zip and copy it to the root of you sd-card (just watch out, you do not rename it to PB99IMG.zip.zip, because windows hides known file extensions).
Wether you decide for android flasher or directly the method with the zip files, make a complete nandroid backup first. Then download the hboot you want and you need for the method you decided (Do not forgot to check md5 after downloading the hboot!) and run the update.
How you do this:
Android flasher:
1.) Make sure you have usb debug mode on, the behaviour when usb is connected is on "only load" and you have installed hboot dand htc drivers
2.) Connect the phone with your computer
3.)
4.) Choose the file bravo_alphaspl-xxx.img and run the update (android flasher will say you when it's finished)
PBIMG99.zip:
(...)Start the phone in HBOOT mode (VolDown+POWER) to flash the HBOOT without a PC.
Click to collapse
(from alpharev website)
In both methods now boot into recovery, wipe everything and restore the nandroid backup.
No warranty for any damage!

I doubt it's your sd-card. Okay since you've got S-OFF lets flash a different recovery. Follow these steps:
All you have to do is downlaod fastboot commander, and the java jdk for the tool to work.
Then, download the Ra Desire recovery
Once you've got that, but into fastboot (power off, hold back key & power), and plug in via USB.
run fastboot commander, navigate to the "misc" tab, select "recovery" "boot" "userdata" "system" "cache" "sd-ext"and nothing else and click "erase chosen partition(s)", then go back to the "Hboot, radio & rec" tab, choose "recovery", and find the recovery.img you have downloaded.
Then, simply press "flash recovery"
Once that's done, power off and reboot into recovery (power off, volume down & power, then use volume down key to navigate to RECOVERY and press power to select)
Then flash a ROM of your choice. For me this is the best way to flash new ROMs since it's a good, clean install and you don't get remaining crap left over from old ROMs
Did you wipe everything before flashing the rom?
Swyped from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
yes, i'll try this and let u know if its working... thanks...
by the way, i've wipe everything before i try to flash a new ROM, wiping DalvikCache is unsuccesfull...

[Q] no SD cards working

So I have a bit of an issue. No SD cards are able to work on my phone. Back story:
The keys on my keyboard were becoming less responsive, so I thought it'd be a great idea to disassemble the phone and make sure the ribbons were connected and clean out some of the dust. I forgot to remove my SD card while doing so. After rebooting, the SD card I had in, and any of my other SD cards, no longer work in my G2 phone. The SD card is not damaged, card reader shows it and it shows up on other phones. When I have ANY sd card in this phone, the system says it is damaged and cannot read it, might have to format it, and is ultimately unable to do so, and that loop continues.
I read somewhere updating the hboot might resolve this issue? I assumed I ****ed up the hardware somewhere in there? Could it be re-soldered? Also, hboot is version .84, tried running RUU from HTCdev but I'm unable to run that since I'd have to first up/downgrade to 2.16.531.5 I am running Gingerbread 2.3.7, s-off. TBH, I haven't messed around with the rom or anything with this phone in at least a year or more, so it's out of date fo sho.
I tried flashing stock rom through ADB, is that my best option? And from there, run the update from HTCdev? ANY suggestions??
Flashing a new bootloader will almost for sure not help. It sounds like you should just get a new sdcard tray, usually found for $10 or less

Ok, found one for like $8, and i think the issue is with the ribbon that connects from the SD tray, it has a tear on one side of it.
But now my issue is using fastboot to install a new rom.
I used:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
to get to the black screen with HTC, and then tried
fastboot flash zip file.zip
but I get error:
Code:
c:\platform-tools>fastboot flash zip G2_2.16.531.5root.zip
sending 'zip' (119816 KB)... OKAY
writing 'zip'... INFOzip header checking...
INFOzip info parsing...
FAILED (remote: 24 parsing android-info fail)
Any suggestions how to install a rom? The rom I was attempting was a stock, but as long as I figure out how to get ANY rom onto it I'm fine with it!
Thanks

Ok, found one for like $8, and i think the issue is with the ribbon that connects from the SD tray, it has a tear on one side of it.
But now my issue is using fastboot to install a new rom.

UPDATE:
I went into the #G2root IRC channe;, got some help from Guhl. He had me make a tmpfs drive named sdcard and use this to install a ROM and GAPPS to it, then install them from cwm.
That's a very clever way, if you want to try with fastboot next time see here

[Q] Can't mount SD Card

Hello,
I posted this in the General section by mistake.
My HTC desire won't read the SD card. It is not a problem with the card since I tried it on Windows & other phones and it works + Tried cards that work in other phones and won't work on mine.
What do I have access to:
- The phone is S-OFF
- I have Clockworkmod Recovery
- I can't see the card from the recovery either ("Can't mount /sdcard")
- my phone is not rooted
- I have stock 2.2 android (2.29.405.5)
- I have the drivers installed on my PC and I can access the phone via abd or fastboot
I have tried:
"fastboot oem enableqxdm 0" from fastboot, it didn't fix it.
Unbrick from 4eXT Recovery:
Asked a coworker for his working SD Card
Used the "fastboot oem enableqxdm 0"
Installed "4eXT Recovery Touch v1.0.0.5 RC9"
Entered Recovery with msg "Error mounting your card .... "
Tools > Usb unbrick
"Your CID: HTC__032
Patching misc image..
Your misc partition size: 640kb
Writing mtd0..
Done.. please reboot!"
After reboot the same issue "Error mounting your card .... " in Recovery, loaded rom: No SD card
Returned the card to my coworker, card is still functional in his phone.
I am opened to suggestions. Worst case scenario: Hardware malfunction
Ty,
Danny
One additional question:
Assuming that I can't get my SDcard to work. Is there a way to install custom rom's?
I have s-OFF, Clockworkmod and adb + fastboot access. Can I flash a new rom from fastboot?
I tried like this with no success:
fastboot erase cache
erasing 'cache'...
OKAY [ 0.284s]
finished. total time: 0.284s
fastboot oem rebootRUU
...
OKAY [ 0.092s]
finished. total time: 0.092s
fastboot flash zip Official_Stock_Sense-Gingerbread_v1.2__GB-2.3.3_A2SD.zip
sending 'zip' (146730 KB)...
OKAY [ 21.102s]
writing 'zip'...
(bootloader) zip header checking...
(bootloader) zip info parsing...
FAILED (remote: 24 parsing android-info fail)
finished. total time: 29.371s

Im not an expert but it seems to be a hardware issue.
Also, if i would be in your situation i would try to change the hboot. Not sure if it has anything to do with it though. Like i said, not an expert.. but id try it anyway hehe..
Wait for someone with more knowledge on this matter to reply or take it to the service.
Please don't change hboot, it has nothing to do with your problem...
You only change hboot before you flash a rom to match the rom's /system size in order to maximize /data (internal memory)
To flash a rom you don't do it thru fastboot, you need to do it thru recovery like normal (full wipe then install zip from sdcard)
However it's strange why your phone can't detect your sdcard. suspect might be hardware after your current logical testing.
Last thing I would try is to delete all partitions and reformat to FAT32 partition using gparted, see if phone detects it after that
What is the capacity of your SDcard? (32Gb maximum for Desire if i'm right)

Just 2 GB and I also tried a 8 GB
If your sd-card is working in computer, so that is something wrong with the phone. Can you access your sd-card from recovery? If not, the system won't too.
