Hey everyone -
So I'm currently running Blazer Rom 4.0 and its great. But I'm trying to get some battery issues resolved, and have seen mentioned that I can flash a new kernel that may help me out. My Questions:
How can I check the current kernel installed?
And what kernel do you recommend for E4GT with Blazer 4.0, EL29?
Is there a preferred modem to flash? Or does it change on a case by case basis (as some threads seem to suggest)?
Thank you!!
The rogue ones work best as they're stock w tweaks, use gunslinger. Only way to tell what you currently have is if it was included in the description of the rom from the op.
If you want to mess w battery life, try slightly underclocking ur CPU. Or don't have so many widgets, use less 4g and Bluetooth, turn GPS off when u don't need it.
Modems, differ on phones...I had good success with el29 and fc05.

To find out the which kernel is installed go to: settings / about phone / then under where it says kernel version
good point also!
Personally I can't decipher what most of the kernels are unless someone makes a specific custom kernel (like zedomax) which hasn't been done for this phone in a loooooong time.

Thank you guys, very helpful! Whats the best way to download these custom kernels? Having some trouble finding a download link for Rogues Gunslinger.
ahh! I think I found it in the Hitman recovery thread.. The download link was noted as removed which threw me off, but it was actually in a post below. woop
Make sure its not a kernel repacked with touch recovery! Those things have been borking phones left and right thats why the hitman link is removed until its figure out what the hell is giving out the blue light of death

Check out the read that's posted on this forum about setcpu. That's what I did. I read a few good reads on voltage and setcpu. Then went from there. I've been using Rogue kernel and setcpu for months now..
Using Gunslinger kernel I got a 7637 on Antutu benchmark..

I'm new to posting, so I apologize if I do this incorrectly. Just wondering which rom /modem the devs/users think has the most advantages, in terms of battery life, network speeds, overall performance, GPS lock, bugs, and other important factors I am not thinking of currently. There seems to be a lot of leaked builds to choose from (EG30, EG31, EK02, EL13, EL26,EL29).I thought if we started a discussion about this, readers would have a better understanding of which stock or custom rom to flash and why. Thanks in advance!
I'm still using stock EK02 rom and modem, rooted. GPS sometimes lags for initial lock. WIFI works great, network speeds usually around 1 mbps. Phone feels snappy, lag free, battery lasts through the day quite easily.

There are already three or four recent threads discussing this. I don't see the need to start another one. Most users like EL29, some say they experience battery drain.
I'm using EG30 modem with EL26 kernel, and that combination is great. Fast, smooth scrolling.
In the time I've been using this combo (about a week and a half), I haven't gotten one. But it's a moot point - I almost never get los.
can you mix these with miui?

Thank you. To be clear I can mix the modems with MIUI but nothign else listed here.
I'm looking for a good kernel like I've had all my life on the EVO OG and EVO3D
Thank you guys I really hope this dev community picks up!
I'm using stock ek02, odexed, rooted, el29 modem, rogue desperado 1.3 ek02 kernel and modded recovery, hotspot mod flash, no frills CPU control set at 800 200 ondemand cfq.
I please delete
Well, as Phatman pointed out, this thread is redundant and I suppose will be deleted. Sorry about that. Thanks to those who replied. Seems like there are several kernel/ modem combinations that work well, but not one in particular that is regarded as clearly superior by the community.

Personally I use hitman. If you're looking for performance, I've gotten over 6600 on quadrant. Also I undervolt it and get amazing ~20 hour battery life without any lag at all!
Question, I have the Blazer Rom 3.8 and the Hitman kernel. Loving the combination. I have setcpu setup so its overclocked. Just wondering How do I get my phone undervolted? trying to get the best out of the battery life.
I use Hitman also with Blazer and it works fine.

Btw you can also use SetCPU to undervolt with the "Voltages" tab for the paid version.

For undervolting I use Calkulin's scripts which work on hitman and Gunslinger kernels they can be found here:

Jeep guy still owes me some hot wings so I'm going to correct his post.
Save these links, they come in handy.
Here are the rogue custom kernels, scroll down to the -Archive- section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1341564&highlight=team+rogue
Here are the stock and also some of the older custom kernels:
http://www.android.net/forum/downloads.php?s=&do=cat&id=20
Edit: To avoid any confusion, these kernels are for Gingerbread based ROMs.
Is there still any development going on for GB kernels? It seems like when ICS started showing up that kernel dev slacked off. Would love to see some new kernels that are tweaked for better battery life.

In my experience rouge gunslinger gave me AMAZING battery life I could easily get 2 days of use out of it but it made my rom run a little laggy. I am using EL26 right now with StrongSteves Odexed blue and it FLIES and battery life is still pretty good. Not as good as gunslinger but I couldn't deal with the lagging. Every device is different though you might get amazing battery life and performance with Gunslinger. Stay away from hitman it has caused a lot of problems.

Im gonna upgrade to calks 3.0 and run all the same kernels and whatnnot. I havent heard of any probs with this setup so im going ahead with it
Thanks for the reply's. I am running 1.41 also. Maybe it's the apps I am running. I format every 2 weeks or so and it runs great for a while.

I know everyone in this community hates questions like this, so I apologize. I'm currently on Blazer's ICS rom and loving it, but was just wanting everyone else's input on what they like. I'm not asking which is the best, that isn't a thread like that, I just want to know what you guys are running.
I like Touchwiz based ROM's opposed to the AOSP style (Dunno why, I just appreciate the Samsung nonsense). I tried Blu Kuban but was having issues with it being sluggish, and I know it's not the ROM's fault, it was most likely the way I had the CPU settings tweaked, but I couldn't seem to get them right. I was also am not a huge fan of overly theme'd ROM's. I like the ICS blue in the status bar and things like that, but when EVERY app is theme'd, it gets old.
Anyways, what are you guys running? If you could post your Kernel as well, that would be much appreciated. :silly:

Does it run pretty smooth with that kernel? I'll try flashing that kernel on Blazer again tonight and see if I can configure it decently. I am on Agat's right now, and it's doing well. I need to do more research as to what all of the Governors do. There are a ton on that kernel, and a lot of them I have never heard of.

Aokp, cm9, aosp ics. Or cm10 or aosp jb. I prefer the stock android look without mfg skinned UIs. I'm on aokp m6 ics right now, have been on one version or another since TCP started porting it in march. I use blu kuban to flash to to do prl and profile updates every so often but never stay on twiz roms more than 10 mins. On m6 I use the stock kernel times included, but have tried some of chris41gs kernels, however they broke a few things cuz i flashed them over an already set up rom instead of flashing them after a clean install, and the m6 I'm on has the internal and external SD locations switched around which confused the kernel and broke my SD storage so i went back to the stock kernel on this build til i decide to switch to another rom and do a clean install and start over from scratch

Hey guys,
recently rooted my phone (for the first time) and flashed CM10. I've been reading about Kernels and how they can improve battery life and performance and stuff.
I haven't really understood how a kernel would work. Can I just flash it like how I flashed a ROM? Would it 'delete' my earlier CM10 kernel?
Which kernels are compatible with CM10? Which is the best for battery life and snappiness of the processor?
I've heard of Lean,PopcornKernal, and of course, francos.
Thanks,
Sahil
All of them are good. There isn't a best kernel. You should really stay away from asking those questions. And if you don't tune the kernel there is no way to get any difference than from stock.
Sent From My Toro+ via RED Tapatalk
Im not sure if cm10 requires its own set of kernels but my phone liked the air kernel (ran cooler) and lean (as a bonus removed the purply tint at lower brightness)

depends on the kernel, on the device and on the user.
mpu/core/iva voltages, smartreflex and color control are a few examples.

kernels are like the engine to a car/rom. They're pretty much what manages and drives everything, whereas the rom is like the entire OS.
Every ROM comes with a kernel by default but it can be replaced simply by flashing a kernel on top of it. Conversely, flashing a rom will replace whatever kernel you're running now with the rom's kernel.

Many kernels come with their apps (which can be found in their threads), or some apps might have access to some properties. Also, some roms (cm comes to mind) have access to some properties of some kernels, though there was a recent fuss made about incompatibility so its not perfect.
Franco Kernel
Hey guys! I want to root my GN and I'm a bit confused about what Kernel use...
I have seen this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367341
Did anyone try the newest version of Franco Kernel (r292)? What's about stability, battery drains, lags... ?
I'd recommend trying Franco's kernel out, it is supported by a nice updater app that can auto-flash the kernel and keep you informed of updates. Doing a bit of research yourself is also always recommended here - this site is for learning about your device. Good luck!
James bond kernal claims to be best in battry life , bt acc. To me trinity alpha 67 with setcpu profiles provide best results.
