Ok, so my problem that I reported the other day (of the phone not charging unless it's turned off) finally got to the point that I requested a replacement from Verizon. Yes, I know I'll have to unroot this one and restore it to stock if I want it to be covered under warranty. No big deal
A website dedicated to unlocking the bootloaders of HTC phones( htcdev.com/bootloader) recently caught my eye, but I have a couple of questions about it. Will unlocking my bootloader prior to rooting in anyway change the rooting process? How so? If it will be made easier as a result, I'm definitely listening.

If they are mailing you a replacement phone and you have to mail it back. I wouldn't worry about putting back to stock.
the best thing to do is downgrade and root with revolutionary
Where is a tutorial on downgrading the rom, hboot?

I've rooted before and I'm familiar with the process. My question is about unlocking the bootloader prior to rooting. Does that change the rooting process at all?

Kinda... Unlocking gives you less freedom than gaining S-Off. It requires extra steps to flash a ROM due to the fact that the kernel has to be flashed via Bootloader.
@sjpritch Why do you recommend me not returning the other phone to stock? This is a warranty replacement I'm getting and a rooted phone not running the stock ROM is sure to catch the attention of whoever checks the phones being sent in for warranty replacements.

A month or two ago I unlocked my bootloader and rooted my R800X on 2.3.2. Ever since 2.3.3 has came out, I've wanted to update, but I cannot due to my bootloader being unlocked. Thanks to some very helpful instructions by a fellow XDA member, I did the instructions to relock my bootloader, but I am still rooted. Is that normal? How can I check to see if my bootloader is locked? I really want 2.3.3
You can check it by trying to use fasboot. If your locked, fastboot commands won't work (they'll come back with "you need root first" or something like that). Also, I think you need to do something to get rid of root and put the rom just like it was stock or the install might fail. Might try a factory reset. Good luck!

No if you root your phone that's all that will happen

I think it would be best if you flash your stock firmware to your phone first....as i have seen i lost both root & bootloader unlock after i did so...
I have a friend with a DI2 who needs to return his phone for a warranty claim. It is 100% stock, and on GB.
He essentially wants to do a full backup of apps and data, but I would be hesitant to unlock his bootloader and flash a recovery image.
What would be the best way to go about this?

Look into downgrading his hboot. The use revolution to root then make a back up using cwm. Then follow the steps of unrooting. Just don't use the HTC unlocking kit.

I think a temp root for TiBU or MyBackup Root should be able to do the trick. I feel generally uneasy about touching his HBOOT or anything Verizon would reject his phone for.
The reason for my hesitance is that AT&T rejected a warranty claim on my phone when I returned it for a dead flash memory chip, until I fought them for it.

Is there a way of unlocking bootloader without using htc dev

Nope unfortunately not.
don't think so. It is the easiest way and also the official way.
But it can void your warranty (not if you are a developper apparently xD)

No.
But you can install a custom ROM or root the phone without unlocking the bootloader if you can turn off the security check placed on the NAND storage (i.e S-ON). So far devs have not been able to turn off security (i.e S-OFF) on One X, but it will happen eventually. Till then you’ll have to unlock and potentially void your warranty to root or install a custom ROM.
I've rooted all my previous phones but this time I'm waiting for soff.
Am I right in thinking that when soff is released you can unlock your bootloader without htc dev?

With S-Off you don't need to unlock the bootloader to root or install custom ROMs. That is one of the advantages, no bootloader unlock = no warranty issues. I waited for over a month monitoring S-Off development, but it wasn't really going anywhere. Tired of waiting, I just went ahead and unlocked the bootloader.
It took over a year for some HTC devices (i.e Desire) to gain S-Off, so you never know how long it'll take. But hopefully it'll happen soon...

how to say them that you are a dev?
So I had already unlocked the phone using HTCDev's boot unlocker. Everything seemed fine right up until it came time in this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751796 to run Revolutionary. The phone is bootlooping to the point that Revolutionary can't get the root, it fails and says hit almost any key to exit.
Any help would be appreciated, I'm about to throw this thing through the window.
is it GB 2.3.3 or 2.3.4?
try flashing a newer radio
Sent from my Incredible 2 using xda app-developers app
Do you happen to have a link to one?
crap the only place its even stable enough is at the bootloader and adb can't communicate with it. I don't know what to do. This blows.
search this forum for radios. there's a thread on dev section. and what android version were you on when you tried to root? might have to use taco root for 2.3.4 I think

Well, if you unlocked through HTC you have to relock in order to s-off. Not sure if you knew that.

If i unlock my phone with serial code generated from imei can i install custom roms for my phone?
No.. You need to root your phone first. Read through the different threads before attempting anything so you don't ruin your phone. I would start with the FAQ.

if i root it i can install roms? Will the lock come back?
Sim unlocking is separate from rooting. It's got nothing to do with it.However, unlocking the boot loader does. Many devices require you to unlock your bootloader to install custom firmware after rooting.

Rooting and installing custom ROMs won't affect your sim unlock.

you obviously have no idea what you're saying/doing. i don't recommend you root or unlock your device, at least until you read and understand what you're doing. jumping in headfirst so fast is not a good idea. nobody wants to possibly end up with such an expensive paperweight.
