[Q] Bricked phone - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I was just flashing my phone back to the Stock Telus ROM from the Index thread using Odin. I went into download mode and then I added the PIT file from the Odin folder by clicking the PIT button, then pressed the PDA button and added the Stock ROM TAR file. I connected the device and it was detected, so i pressed start and it was going to do the NAND flash and it said Error. So i tried again, same thing.
Now my phone will not boot up at all, meaning:
-Absolutely nothing on the screen
-Buttons don't do anything
-I got the USB to pick up something called a QUSB-DUMP but then the driver installation failed and I haven't got it to do it again.
-So the phone does absolutely nothing
I remembered that there was no instructions that said anything about the PIT file, so maybe that was it? Please help in anyway you can! Thanks!

Went to store and exchanged it, can anyone confirm what may have caused the brick?

Went back to store again and got a sgs s ii! mwahahahahaha !

I would definitely say the PIT mode, we only use ODIN for PDA as far as I know.

word. not following instructions = bricked phone

not sure why he's laughing so hard about getting a sgs2 when he already has a sgs2?
base on his sig, looks like he's in the wrong forum... this is 989 not 9100

I think i bricked my phone?

hey guys, i saw a bunch of threads about bricks and unbricks but none of them have seemed to help so far
this is what i've ran into.
today while watching tv i grabbed my phone and it seemed to be frozen at the lockscreen so i decided to pull the battery. when i turned it back on it just says samsung and the bottom touch buttons flash at me.
i've tried everything from odin to leaving the battery out and leaving the sd card out. am i screwed?
What happend when you used odin?

it said it completed successfully. so it confuses me.
maybe there is something im missing?
Its been said before and ill say it again, if you can see the samsung logo, enter download mode, do anything at all, etc... YOU ARE NOT BRICKED.
Try the Odin pre-rooted link in my signature. May just be a bad .tar.

Bricked GSM Galaxy Nexus Phone-Yellow Triangle-Computer screen

Ok I'm stumped. Today my phone was acting strange (not responsive to button presses), so I tried to restart it, and it ended up in a endless reboot loop, only showing the "Google" logo. Then I looked into this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1394051, and tried using Odin with the original factory images (OP's stripped image links dont work anymore) but it never passes the "NAND Write Start" part, so I had to pull the battery, and not it's stuck at the Phone-Yellow Triangle-Computer screen, from both Vol- + Vol+ + Power AND Vol- and Power combinations. I also tried using fastboot but adb never picks up the phone although all the drivers are installed correctly (I installed Kies).
The only thing that I can think of is getting a USB jig and trying Odin again, but is there anything else that I can try? Appreciate the help.
I had the same problem a couple of days ago. If Odin is having problems flashing a stock ROM its probably because of a faulty download or error while unzipping which aren't easily detectable. Try downloading the ROM again and extract. It worked for me. Also use a Windows 7 PC and update all the Sammy drivers and ADB drivers. Give it a try and let me know.
Uninstall Kies first. It's known to interfere with Odin!

I've seen two other users with this exact scenario.
(Phone Triangle Computer).
I recommended a jig to both of them after shooting quite a few options down the pipe.
But never heard back if it worked or not.
Hopefully it did and will for you.
Exactly. Download the file again and plug phone in. You will see the (!)-------phone icon. Odin may not detect it but load ur file in odin and click start.

I'm writing to tell you that I just went through what you were attempting to help this guy fix as well. I flashed a backward radio (stupid) and then flashed the wrong stock using ODIN. My solution erased my device - but since it was new I didn't care.. there may be another way to fix this that does not erase the device.
What I finally did to fix this problem was to open the CF_ODIN_YAKJU_IMM76D_full and manually remove the RADIO.IMG from there as ODIN will always fail on this -- and never return you to an operable state. I CHECKED the box to replace the bootloader (since this is screwed at this point). and it worked - I'm back to service. Now - I still have to get the correct radio installed, but I'll take cautious steps.
Thank you for your help. I did not try to ADB either - and still cannot attest to whether that will work on an ODIN fail.
Im going thru this same thing right now except Odin keeps hanging on this line>

Hey, XDA Community!
I have the exact same issue as the OP - a friend gave me his phone to tinker with because it was acting possessed. By that I mean it would start to boot, the Google text screen would come up and flicker (like in the horror movies), and then it would start going through the flashing colour loading screen and lock up a few seconds into it. The phone would become unresponsive and required a battery pull, but it wouldn't return to normal functionality.
I initially tried to get it into Recovery Mode to do a factory reset and data wipe, and even just getting to the screen would be a chore - it would get to the big Android but flicker and freeze before it got to the little android on his back. The couple of times I got to the little bastard I tried the factory reset but it would lock up soon after the process began. This all eventually led me to Odin because putting the phone into Download mode was the only thing I could accomplish consistently enough.
I think I ended up flashing a bad ROM because shortly after the phone locked up during the Odin flash I had to unplug and do a battery pull. After replacing the batter I got the infamous phone+yellow triangle+PC screen. Battery pulls, button combos, nothing worked to get it past that screen. The computer would no longer recognize the phone but it WOULD make the noise like something had just connected to it. A quick look into Odin showed that it somehow still recognized the phone. Several attempts were made to flash stock ROMs that I was 100% sure were safe for my phone, but all of them either failed immediately or hung at the "NAND WRITE STARTED" stage.
I ensured that I deleted ALL old Google and Samsung and TI drivers and reinstalled via the Naked Drivers package - still no luck. I'm at my wits end and am almost positive it's a hardware issue because some users have reported that it's a messed up motherboard or pooped out processor.
Still, I felt that I should at least post here in the hope that perhaps there's something I still haven't tried. Thanks in advance for any and all help/suggestions that anyone can offer :good:
Phone: Galaxy Nexus GSM i9250
Carrier: Fido
Unrooted; stock ICS ROM (4.0.4)
PS - I also tried OMAP Flash, Nexus Root Toolkit, and any attempts at using ADB resulted in nada.
I had this problem exactly! What caused it was trying to use a bad download file in odin so it got stuck and I had to pull the battery causing the dreaded yellow "phone-triangle-computer" screen. however I noticed that even with this screen on my phone if I plugged my phone in odin would still recognize it(the yellow box saying com:number showed up). So I just went and found a good download plugged it in to odin and started just like normal even with the yellow triangle screen I still got a blue progress bar and odin still flashed the entire thing and rebooted my phone 100% normal. Hope its this easy a fix for you.

the customer is telling the truth. same thing happened to me. i've had 3 galaxy phones, & this is the first time it happened. i downloaded an app from Playstore. used it for a couple of hours. then exit the program. then after a few hours while playing a different game, my screen went black (which at first I though was due to low battery) then it turned on but only until the NoteII logo. Tried to charge my phone but the battery icon only had this white circle at the center, there wasn't a green bar that's supposed to be showing up when you're charging. I couldn't access the recovery mode. i could access the download mode though. I tried to install CMW & stock rom, but both failed. Odin said my phone has got no PIT file.... please help!
BTW. Let me just tell you more about the apps involved. I downloaded Zynga Poker from Playstore at around 1PM. Played it until maybe around 3PM. Exit the program though it's still sending me annoying notifications. Then at around 9PM, I played RuneMasterPuzzle, which I've been playing since I've got my phone. Actually I've had that in my S2 before & never had a problem. So I'm blaming Zynga Poker.
I really, really need your help. Please...
TIA

I have the same problem.
I tried many solutions like, flashing its ROM, fix partition, followed Dr. Ketan's advices. Still no good. I can access Odin Mode but I can't access my recovery.
Here's my situation:

What the hell. So I'm not the only one with this problem. Same goes for me. I checked mails on my note 2 when it suddenly went black and rebooted. Then it was stuck at the first bootscreen. I can also go into Download mode but not into recovery. I tried flashing Stock Roms, Rescue Rom, Custom Roms, Root and CWM but nothing ever changed the situation.....perhaps this is a bigger problem?!
This is my Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040464
Isn't there anybody able to help us?!
Try to closely read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923956.

Problem with toolkit is that i does not see my phone. I can only get to download mode. Nothing else. Can't boot it up and when i try to use the toolkit it says that USB debugging needs to be enabled... well seems like that isnt the case, did not need it before so i think it's disabled :/
What did you do to the phone exactly?
Did you ever root it? Which root method did you use? From where did you follow instructions to do so?
Did you ever flash some firmware? Which one? What's the full name of the file you flashed?
EDIT: Please, these questions are mandatory to understand the issue.
Alright so it happened on sunday, my phone was complete Stock and i never installed root or custom rom before on this device. I was checking my mails when the phone suddenly rebooted. When it was up again i suddenly got the S-Voice instructions which i had to click through. After that the phone rebooted again. When i had to enter the PIN i just touched the screen for a second and the screen went black again. Now it rebooted to bootscreen and got stuck there. After that i tried anything to get it back to life. I am not able to enter recovery, only download mode.
In the meatime i flashed anything that looked promising. For example the newest Stock rom for my Note 2, CWM+ Root, Stock Recovery+ Root, Rescue Rom with PIT-File (got it here in the Forum for getting bricked phones back to live, it has all the files - phone, csc, modem, PIT and bootloader), Recovery Fix..... i tried anything but it still gets stuck at bootscreen and i was never able to get to recovery......
When i check in download mode my Counter is now at 10 and Current Binary and System Binary is Custom. Even when i flashed Stock Rom, System binary never changed back to Official. it's always custom....... Odin flashing is always succesful even tried it on different PCs....yet still getting stuck at bootscreen......
Dunno if there's even a way to get it back to live
Edit: I flashed my old Galaxy S up and down without problems and even when it was softbricked it was no problem for me to get it back to live. This time i just don't see any possible solution -.-

Did this also. When I plug the USB Cable, PC will beep (detected by PC, meaning driver is working) But in Toolkit's Interface, Phone's serial number is not showing. What I can do in Toolkit is to Launch Odin, well, Odin can detect the phone. BUT after flashing. It will reboot to the first boot screen.
Is this a sort of a SOFT BRICK?
Is it already a hardware problem? like fried chip or something?
I'm already running out of options here. :crying:
Well at the moment i haven't found anyone who is able to help us and i tried many different things to get it working again. Without success....
Perhaps somewhere here on xda we will find a savior but at the moment i don't see any hope for our devices but to send them to samsung :/
After reading some threads and searching for the cause of the problem, well, that thing, i must say that "Reboot of Death" LOL! happened under normal use, stock, unrooted Note2s.

I was on the FK23 rom for a while, and everything was working perfectly. However, last night, I ran a white noise machine app from my phone while it was on the charger all night.
When I went to unlock the phone this morning, it wouldn't unlock, so I pulled the battery, and it started to bootloop. It would do the Galaxy SII screen, then the Sprint bootup, then it would play the Sprint boot down animation. Over and over.
So I tried flashing FL16 with ODIN, and when I do that, it gets stuck on hidden.img and doesn't do anything. Then I tried flashing EL29 with ODIN, and it gets stuck on recovery.bin and doesn't do anything. I have used multiple PCs and multiple cables. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?! I just want my phone to work T_T

Do a factory restore and wipe then odin one click stock EL29 and start from scratch.
I can't do a factory restore. When I hold Vol up + power, it says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again"
:edited: Didn't see your response to graydiggy
Redownload a complete one click, verify md5 and try putting the phone in download mode and attempting again. It's possible that your download was bad.
so is there nothing I can do?
By technicality, that is not a brick. You should be able to flash from that message. That was the case with the Samsung Captivate.
I downloaded EL29 and verified it again. It is doing the same thing. stuck on recovery.bin
I also tried flashing from that message just now. Same thing. ODIN gets stuck on recovery.bin
thanks for the help but I think it's ****ed. something might have messed up in the filesystem and that's why ODIN gets stuck maybe.

Ok, so I found a solution by sfhub that worked for someone from a while ago. Try using pc odin to flash each piece seperately. Modem, kernel, then rom..
Here's my ref:
See post #9 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492771
I'll see if this works. Hopefully it does, I'm ready to toss the thing out of a window, haha
edit: noob question, how do I flash the .md5 files? I downloaded odin multi downloader but the phone doesn't show up in it.
edit 2: okay nevermind I figured it out, it seems to be flashing
edit 3: so modem flashed just fine and the phone rebooted but when I try kernel it loads the green bar all the way on odin then it freezes...
edit 4: so I think my phone's flash memory might be screwed somehow. I've been reading other threads and someone had a similar problem as me and couldn't fix it.

Have you flashed all three pieces before trying to let the phone boot completely? Once you flash the first piece and it restarts, Just hold power+vol down and get back into download. Do that until you have all three segments flashed. Then try letting it boot.
I flashed the modem, it worked, then I rebooted back into download. Then I tried flashing kernel and the bar on ODIN filled up but then it froze and did nothing. I let it sit for about 10 minutes and it still did nothing. so I tried skipping that and flashing the rom and the bar on ODIN moved barely then froze. Like I said, I think my phone's flash memory got messed up somehow. :\

Then there may be one more thread that might help if that's the case.
Kernel is only the zimage file. Hang on, let me find it.
:edit: Maybe this will help you. If not, maybe graydiggy or someone else has some ideas.
With this, you'll have to see if you can't flash a custom recovery. From the sound of it, it may not be helpful at all.

They will probably know you borked it by trying to flash. If they can get to a recovery to see if you have flashed anything, you are screwed.
Do you by chance have a USB Download Mode JIG?
No, I don't. My download count in download mode is at 1, too.... so they probably won't fix it... but I might get lucky. Who knows.
edit: the messed up thing is I don't really know what messed it up. it worked fine for about a month on FK23, then boom, this morning it won't unlock and bootloops when I pull battery. before I tried flashing it, it wouldn't even go into recovery. when I held vol up + power, it just went to the Samsung screen and rebooted over and over

I have a theory... Give it a couple hours of plug in time without turning it on or trying to flash. Just give it like 3 hours and see if you can flash from there. You may have a battery that is low and it could be resulting in your problem of not being able to flash.
the battery was also on the charger all night... but I'll plug it in. is it charging even though it is on the connect to kies screen?

Just keep it completely powered off and use the normal wall charger.

Need Help with boot issues

I have had a wierd issue with booting. My phone was fine until a couple days ago when i booted and the screen went black after the boot animation. I've odined to stock and now im stuck on the samsung image. It seems like somethign is corrupt right on boot. Does anyone have access to the pit file for a repartition or do you have any suggestioins?
If you can find the user Garwynn or rwilco, I think either of them might. Or one of their pals. (check the RDF thread in general)

I'm on the same boat. Just bought another Note II and it's stuck in the Samsung logo. I've tried a couple of different stock ODIN tar files, and it fails after a few seconds. I've read in the AT&T Note II forum other users experiencing the same issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1927150
What did you do prior to it failing to boot?
And theres a full restore with PIT floating around in the [WIP] missing IMEI thread by t3project in dev that will wipe and repartition the entire device before restoring lj1 or ljc forget which build it includes

Try flashing this with odin http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390169635556426493 its a full restore that *should* get you booting as long as the former owner didnt bork the bootloader or install firmware from another variant

Thanks for all the suggestions, I did however get it to boot. I believe that something in my data that gets loaded early on just after the core boot got corruppted. This is because when I flashed the rooted odin tar which does not affect data the screen remained black directly after boot. However the full restore which wipes data, unfortunately including the internal sd card, it did successfully load. I then experimented by rerooting and restoring my data from the backup I made following the issue. This reaulted in the same issue and so I had to re odin. The wierdest thing though, is I did nothing to cause this issue, other than maybe a battery pull. My phone was on in class and I could not access the power button discretely enough, so I pulled yhe battery. Roughly 2hours later I reinserted the battery and powered the phone on. This is when the problem startrded.

I've tried many ODIN stock ROMs including that one you linked w/o using a PIT partition file. ODIN tells me "There is no PIT partition" and ODIN stops.
I tried this ODIN stock ROM w/ the PIT file: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35961891&postcount=179
ODIN tells me "Re-partition operation failed"
If it's a bootloader issue, can it still be fixed? How about if a ROM for a different Note II variant was used....can that still be fixed?
*** UPDATE ***
One other thing I noticed is that when I plug in the phone either to its charger or on the PC while the phone is off, I see the battery logo show up, but it doesn't update the battery status according to its current charge (it shows an empty battery even though I know it's full). In addition, when I remove the USB cable from the phone, the battery logo stays there. Only way to clear it out is to remove the battery and put the battery back in.
Thanks!

You may have to either have it Jtag'd to get it repaired or file an ins claim to get it replaced. Jtag would be cheaper but you'd be without thw device about a week, although since its not booting now I doubt that would be too much hassle to have it working when you get it back

I wonder if I can do a warranty claim. Looking at that AT&T thread I linked above, looks like other folks experienced the same problem when they simply downloaded a regular app from Play Store. Phone shut down and it's stuck in the same place where I'm stuck. ODIN didn't work for them either.

If the custom binary count shows anything other than "no" or "0" your warranty will be denied and your account flagged that the warranty on that device is now void.

When I go to Download mode, it shows me the following:
Product Name: (blank)
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official

That system status *may* cause problems although you could always try playing dumb since the binary count says no. Product name shouldn't be blank though so it appears the previous owner did in fact flash either something for the wrong device or a corrupted file that borked something.

In the AT&T thread, those who've tried to flash the stock N7100 bootloader via ODIN got the phone working again. I tried looking for the SPH-L900 bootloader, but I can't find it so far. Perhaps that's my last hope before trying to send it in for warranty repair.
Bootloader should be in a full restore. You will probably need to try an lj1 restore. I know for a fact ma5 includes bootloader but its not official so if it doesn't work you're stuck again. It may be worth a try anyways tho cuz if you can get it booting with ma5 you can then do the hoop jumps to downgrade the bootloader and firmware if you want, although most people seem to like ma5 alot and it fixes the exynos root exploit and is 4.1.2 and apparently google wallet works without much hassle

I looked at the SPH-L900_L900VPALJ1_L900VPALJ1_L900SPTALJ1.tar.md5 file. I see a boot.img. Do I simply delete all other files in the tar file and flash the SPH-L900_L900VPALJ1_L900VPALJ1_L900SPTALJ1.tar.md5 and put it in the "bootloader" section in ODIN to flash it?

Boot.img is the kernel not bootloader. Lemme see if I can scrounge up just a bootloader tar from somewhere. I know on a full restore like ma5 you'd just put the whole tar in pda and it will flash everything where it needs to go. I haven't tried flashing a bootloader onlh thru odin and I know putting things in the wrong slot = big trouble. You would really need to flash an AiO with bootloader, rom etc since we dont even know what if any rom is on there

On the restore you linked here did you make sure to download the attached PIT file at the bottom of the post as well? If not that maybe why that restore failed and you could try including the PIT and reflashing

I was able to extract the param.bin and sboot.bin from SPH-L900_L900VPALJ1_L900VPALJ1_L900SPTALJ1.tar.md5. Looks like these 2 files are the bootloader files. In any case, I attempted to flash it via ODIN and it still didn't work.
And yes, I used the PIT file attached with the ODIN recovery I linked. That didn't work either. So right now it's looking like the only options I have:
1) Warranty claim
2) JTAG

Yea sounds like someone flashed incorrect firmware and borked the partitions up. I know the international variant I believe has its misc partition in the same place the sprint versions boot partition is and if you flash that its forked up good. (I might be thinking of s3 here, I'm maintaining so many devices its getting hard to keep them all straight) either way flashing firmware from another variant is never a good thing at the very minimum the modems are for entirely different hardware/frequencies, and at the worst the partitions are all different and screw up the emmc with no way to gain access to correct the failed partitions.

I PM'd Dr.Ketan (recognized developer in the N7100 section). He thinks my Note 2 is a victim of SDS (sudden death syndrome) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2093599 there may be hope yet for a warranty claim.
