can't flash anything in cm7 recovery - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

i'm trying install cm9 or miui 4 or aokp but am running into a problem where i can't flash anything from cwm bundled with cm7. i'm doing these exact steps as stated here in Part 1:
with calk's el29 installed (with Rogue 1.1.2 based off cwm 5.0.2.7), i booted into recovery and wiped data except for battery stats. i flashed cm7 from here. i immediately booted into cm7, then immediately rebooted back into cwm recovery. from here, i tried flashing cm9, miui 4, aokp alpha 1, and aokp alpha 2. they all fail saying "E: can't open /sdcard/romname.zip (bad) Installation aborted."
what am i doing wrong?

I would flash cm7 again, boot, then reboot into recovery again and try to flash another ics ROM. Just make sure to remember not to wipe data until after you flash an ics ROM and gapps

Back in the vibrant days (tmobile galaxy s) if you had any problems with flashing the "fix" was to start all over via Odin and a rooted stock ROM...
Dunno if that is something that is still a good idea to do.. But worth a try...

tried that like 4 times lol. i'm actually gonna try copying all the ics roms onto my sdcard again, this time from within android itself. all the roms had been transferred over while usb was mounted in cwm and i noticed the transfers would pause at times or not complete at all, forcing me to start them over. perhaps that's the problem.

CM9 GPS fix changing back to GB rom

I'm trying to fix GPS by locking on with a gingerbread rom, then powering off, then back to CM9. I'm just not sure how to do that since I don't have CWM recovery anymore. I'm not familiar with the recovery that came with CM9. Any help?
Possibly someone else knows a better way, but I honestly did it by using the autoflash to EL29 through Odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101.
I would then boot up, get the GPS lock and power off while in Maps and locked. Then flashed the CWM from the CM9 original post tar through odin, and flashed CM9 from there.
Bulky, painful process that upped the flash count again, but got it to work for me.
ok, so I there's no CWM style "install from zip" option with CM9A2. Is this something that is expected to change anytime soon? Will CWM recovery ever be included?
I have a fast and accurate fix by running two apps one time. Run Faster Fix, then run GPS Fix. My gps locks before my map is even done loading now.

I am sure there will be once we get out of alpha phase and get source code for a working custom ics recovery. You just have to remember that our devs are working with very very limited source code right now so it limits what they can do.
For what they have to work with they are doing an amazing job though.

tried this...still can't get a lock.
I also tried auto root package wich eventually said that it installed el26CWM, but it got stuck on the yellow triangle screen (which apparently was supposed to be gone.) So now I'm stuck in download mode looking or a gingerbread based rom in .tar format so that I can flash using regular old odin. Can anybody provide me a link to any gingerbread based rom that is a tar file. I thought that I could just download a gingerbread rom zip file, then extract and find the .tar file within, but apparently that is not the case. any one have a link?

I tried the one touch odin method and it passed, but my phone gets stuck on the sprint 4g boot animation loop. so then I found a el26cwm.tar file and went back into odin mode and tried flashing it through regular odin (in the pda slot) and everything passed, but I'm still stuck in the sprint 4g boot animation. What am i doing wrong?
That is usually from a bad install. Try flashing a kernel. Boot into recovery and flash a ROM from there. Don't forget to wipe or use Calkulins format all package.

before flashing cm9 in cwm wipe data/factory reset.
i was in a boot loop myself after going back to GB to get GPS.
i odin'd el26cwm, boot into cwm flashed calkulins 3.0 rom, got a gps lock, rebooted into cwm recovery that came with 3.0, flashed cm9, gapps and modem. got stuck in a bootloop....i never did reflash the GB rom, just odin'd el26cwm but this time in cwm recovery i wiped data/factory reset before flashing cm9 and gapps no need to redo modem.

finally got back to CM9w/GPS lock!!!!!
After boot loops from auto root, one touch odin, and regular odin, I finally went back into recovery, factory wipe, then install gunslinger, then install unammed ROM, then got a lock in google maps, power off, then followed the CM9 instructions again. Now I'm all good, but wasted 3 hours that I could have been working (which is my loss since I'm self-employed) However, now I have GPS on CM9, so I'm content. Thanks to everyone who helped I really appreciate it.

What was it that finally got you from Android Recovery and back to CWM??
I've been trying to get this corrected all day after I installed CM9 Alpha 3 last night from the stock ROM and found GPS didn't work which i need.
My issue is simply: I just can't get back to a normal CMW screen to install different ROMs that are on the phones internal storage.
I'm currently downgraded to the EL26 which I installed successfully through ODIN, however, I still get the Android Recovery instead of CWM. I've tried EL29, flashing CWM through ROM Manager, etc... Nothing works and Android Recovery will not let me install a ROM from the phones internal storage. I need CWM to install CM7, then CM9 again, to enable the CM9 Alpha 3 GPS fix.
Use mobile odin and flash this kernel: http://db.tt/0QJkleJR
When screen goes off hold power+volume up to boot into recovery. It won't boot up because its a gb kernel, but its the safest cwm to flash things with.
Sent using Tapatalk 2 Beta-5 on AOKP 32 ROM
Also, be sure to wipe before flashing.

[Q]How to update CM9? Can't flash CWM on ICS?

I'm sorry, Im confused. I have been searching and I have read 3 seemingly contradictory facts:
- NEVER flash CM9 with any other recovery other than clockwork mod
- NEVER use odin to flash clockwork mod on an ICS rom
- You can flash a newer version of CM9 over the old one
So i'm using CM9 RC0 and I would like to update to alpha2 without wiping. CWM disappeared when i flashed and I keep reading that its dangerous to use the stock rouge recovery. So I went to go use odin to get CWM back on but there is a warning to never try to load it using an ICS rom?
Where am I going wrong here? I really dont want to wipe and flash to a GB rom just so that I can use odin to get CWM and flash back to cm9.
Thanks, I just wanted to make sure i didn't ruin my phone!

What you want to do is flash the EL26 kernel with CWM through Odin. Once it's flashed and the phone starts to reboot, pull the battery. Put the battery back in, boot into recovery via Vol up+ power and then flash Alpha 2 over RC0, flash GApps and reboot. You should be good to go then.

This is a recent thing that started when the ICS leaks started coming. Before ICS, rooting and flashing this phone was as easy as any. It still is actually, but you have to be more careful, especially with any of the AOSP ROMs. It should be back to normal once the official ICS update is released and we get our hands on the source code.

Worked perfectly! Hopefully you have helped many noobs down the road when they search for this. What threw me off was QBKings video when he kept warning to never flash EL26 on ICS. (Mad respect though, QBKing!). Thanks for clearing that up for me!
On a side note, yeah, things seem complicated. I know there is a good reason why CM9 doesn't include a good recovery but I hope as things develop we will eventually get back to the "Rom Manager" days. Man, our devs spoil us!

Going from stock GB to CM10 or JB

Hey, I used to run CM9 on my phone, and eventually got tired of not having a few things work, so I flashed back to stock (rooted) GB for the time being. I was wondering what are the steps to go from what I have flashed now, to something like sbrissen's AOSP JB ROM or CM10. Like what files should I flash and in what order so I don't brick my phone?

Things you'll need: Odin, EL26 file (.tar version), Calks format all, JB ROM (I like CM10 but it's up to you) and Gapps for JB
Make a nandroid (if you dont have a custom recovery, go to next step). Boot into Odin mode and open up Odin on your computer and flash the EL26 file in the PDA version (turn off F reset time). Then go to recovery, (make a nandroid if you didn't before), wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache, (optional but recommended: flash Calks format all) and then flash whichever ROM you want and then flash the jb gapps and reboot
Almost all of the devs have instructions on their threads so you could follow that too. Hope this helps and happy flashing!

Ready to flash from stock for 1st time but few questions.

Hey everybody.
I used to flash all sorts of roms on my old galaxy vibrant but I bought a new t989 a few months ago and I want to go to a custom from the stock tmob bloatware infested ICS. I already rooted via odin and installed clockwork recovery, which comes up just fine with the usual volume and power combo so i'm good there.
My question is should I flash my first rom (probably jedi mind trick 5 or x1,or if anyone knows a daily driver ready jelly bean??)
via clockwork mod like on my vibrant? or do I use twrp which I also have via goo manager? I prefer cwm because I am familiar with how to wipe cache, reset and flash with it but I can't figure out why some mods recommend one or the other.
Also,
I keep seeing some roms that come with a radio zip and was wondering if all roms require this or is it just certain roms?
Thanks in advance for any help. I just don't want to wreck my phone the first time. Remember, I've flashed a million times on my vibrant but never on my t989 so any pointers or heads up would be appreciated.
Get darkside wipe scripts (both wipe cache and super wipe)
Go ahead with the Jedi X1 ROM its very stable and fast as hell
But if you want Jelly Bean I recommend Galaxy SBean v8 or Liquidsmooth rc8 they're the most stable JB ROMs from what I experienced
Remember to always wipe dalvic cache and fix permissions (darkside cache wipe) after flashing a new ROM
After you flash your ROM and Gapps then boot that's when you can flash kernels, mods, and apk's so it would have a lesser chance of a soft brick
Happy Flashing!

Cool. Thanks for the reply. I went and grabbed super wipe and cache wipe. So essentially, I just put those two on my sd and flash like I do a rom zip from recovery and then flash the rom itself and do a darkside cache wipe after new rom is installed before restarting and booting for the first time? Do I still need to do factory reset/wipe or is that part of the scripts? I have the goo app so I can use twrp instead since it's recommended for almost all roms I will be installing. Any major reason why, besides that it has touch function and backup renaming? Is it safe to install from the goo app on stock rom?
I think I will probably try one of the jellybean roms you suggested. I just didn't want random reboots, and I heard that's an issue with jelly bean roms but I think that might have been specific to aokp ones or something. Occasional FCs aren't too big of a deal though.
One other thing though... how do I fix permissions? I kept reading about that but never did it. Do you mean in recovery or under superuser?

Ok thanks. He seems to recommend not using the darkside scripts. I have a slightly older CWM 5.0.2.6 that I did via odin BTW so do I fall into the 'don't' use darkside category or does he mean anything after 5.0.2.7? I don't mind wiping cache and dalvik manually and doing all the formats if that's the case.
Do I fix permissions after I have booted the rom and waited 10 mins and restarted back into cwm or before I boot it for the first time?

I usually do it after flashing. And you don't need to do it every single time. Also, there's no need to follow everything down to the letter when you flash, wipe cache/dalvik/factory reset/wipe system/fix permissions/sit for 10 mins/reboot/reboot again/etc. Flashing is like cooking. As long as you don't deviate too much from the recipe, you'll get edible food (or a working ROM). If it doesn't work out, just toss the food out and try again (softbricked phone, reflash). If you try something stupid, you'll set your kitchen on fire when you don't have insurance (comparable to hard bricking your phone).
I usually wait till I've restored all my apps before fixing permissions, and then sometimes I don't if everything is working fine. As for recovery, I know you're familiar with CWM, but I'd recommend spending some time using TWRP. It's really great. You don't need the scripts with TWRP, but since TWRP lets you cue up zips, you can set it to do super wipe, ROM, gapps, and cache wipe all in one go. Kinda cool. And if you're itching to try jelly bean, AOKP JB milestone 1 is stable and smooth. There are even a couple custom kernels for it and CM10 (which has also reached a stable version, though I haven't tried it).

Dark side super wipe and cache wipe work perfectly on 5.0.2.6! That's how I got PACman ROM on my phone. I didn't bother with fix permissions. Well, I would say don't worry unless the instructions specify to do so.
Either way, I like CWM because I used it on my Samsung Galaxy Ace. Its just the wipes are broken for this phone so the scripts have to be used and work perfect. Happy flashing!

no it's fine to use the scripts w/ cwm 5. just don't use the scripts on cwm 6. that's what he meant.
i usually fix permission after the first reboot & waiting 10-15 mins.
i second the twrp recommendation...however if you're flashing something old, then cwm is the way to go. i haven't had any problems flashing anything in cwm. the latest twrp however failed me after i tried to flash a gb theme for jugg lol.

Ok, just wanted to make sure on that one.
Thanks for all the input everybody. Hopefully I will get a chance to do my flash over the holiday. I plan on going with the Sbean V8. Really all of the roms out look excellent but this one looks good for a JB daily driver. I went ahead and downloaded Jedi X1 too though in case the sbean doesn't work out for whatever reason. I have to tether my phone at home for internet so I thought it might be good to have a backup just in case PDAnet doesn't want to work.
Is twrp ok to install from Goo manager on my stock rom or should I flash a new rom and then use it from then on? I just want to make sure it won't conflict with the stocker or the CWM that I have on it already.

Flashing JB Roms causes bootloops

Hello guys!
As the title says, I keep on having boot loops after flashing any custom JB Roms (Jedi, LiquidSmooth, CM Nightly, Slimbean). I'm not new to flashing roms (I got LG units though, SU660 and KU5900). When I tried flashing ICS Roms, I don't have any problem. But I want JB that bad!
I followed KonstantinKeller's thread of restoring/recovering from a bad flash (going back to GB), rooted following Melvin's thread. Then did all the prerequisites..like the common wiping of data, clear cache & davlik. But then again after flashing JB roms listed above, I keep on having boot loops!
What did I do wrong? This ain't my first time flashing (first time on this phone -T989- though)
I read some posts with almost the same problem, but I don't think I found a solution for this. Any good soul that can extend their help is highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
I got a bootloop before when trying to flash JB roms and what I did was restore to original state (using the bad flash recovery technique), and then not rooting it but installing cwm through Odin and dirty flashing the Rom in cwm. Once it flashed I used it for a few to make sure that everything was working correctly. Then I got the goo manager app and got twrp. After that I followed all the steps in the OP (Jedi jelly) and flashed the Rom. Now I'm running Jedi jelly 3.1 perfectly. Hope this method helps.

it REALLY sounds like the recovery u are using is TOO OLD. Make sure u are using the latest version of twrp (2.3.3) to flash all jellybean roms.
TWRP is backwards compatible and touch capable, so if you're worried about flashing GB or ICS ROMs it'll do the trick just fine
it is however a requirement for flashing all 4.1 ROMs.
Basic install instructions:
make sure u have root
download goo manager from play
open > menu > install open script recovery
agree to everything, but make sure t989 is in the downloaded image name
reboot to recovery u should see twrp
