Buy a Verizon R800X Play that is CDMA if you will not use the cell phone as a phone, i got 2 for this purpose of using them as mp3 player, game console and internet tablet.
Both where brand new factory sealed, but with bad ESN, so they could not be activated for phone use with verizon (wich i didn't cared).
I got one for $174 US and bought the other as a backup because i found it for $130 US, on ebay, a steal because the SIM ones go for $300 US the cheaper brand new.
(Both purchases where from sellers with very good feedback and on buy it now, no an auction i got lucky, so just keep looking ebay constantly for a deal)
Just put it on airplane mode and it doesn't ask for activation on every power on, saves battery and you can use internet and android market in WI-FI in this mode.
I bought a 64GB Microsd card for 107 and sold my ipod touch 64gb, so i got all my devices in 1 except for the phone. (i don't want to because i would use too much battery playing with it and the phone wouln't last enought as i would like)

Sure it's not a CDMA only function, almost all cell phones have it today.
Only thing that doesn't work for me on my play without a sim card is the PlayStation pocket store. Says service is not available in your country or region.

It uses the sim card to check where you are through the cell network.

USA. Have to have the sim card in to access the PS pocket store.

very simple and barely requires any effort.
I was sick and tired of not being able to buy paid apps, so i tried something stupid that worked like a charm.
This is the list of countries Android currently supports for paid apps:
Australia
Austria
Canada
France
Germany
Italy
Japan
Netherlands
New Zealand
Spain
Switzerland
United Kingdom
United States
Use any simcard from one of those countries in your device and paid apps will all appear, buy what you want, install, and put your defaulf sim back in.
I am not in one of those countries, i put a 5 year old UK Vodafone inactive simcard, and it worked.
bought Swiftreply Deluxe using my MC with no problems.
Brilliant
Will make sure to get a sim card and try it out when i get to UK in a month. I really hope it will work as i find it silly that google did not make apps available through google checkout or something like that.

go in to a "3" store and they'll give you a simcard for free.
Well, I thought so too and tryied it as soon as I got my Desire but it doesn't seam to work: I have an old inactive Vodafone UK SIM but can't see payied apps with it. Don't really understand why because in theory it SHOULD!
I'm a bit skeptical on this, especially since pascanu just confirmed it didn't work for him.
I'm in Hong Kong where paid applications are not available.
I recently went to the US where I found and bought an application (Beautiful Widgets). But I've not swapped out the SIM. In fact, I kept my device on Airplane mode the whole time.
I don't see how the SIM comes into play here.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love for this to actually work. But you need more people to test this theory of yours...
how about putting proxy in wifi..
I can verify that this works. I ordered Vodafone sim card from ebay and can see paid apps with it. I have also purhaced few apps. I live in Finland and many other finnish android users use same trick.
i dunno if you need root but i suggest you market enabler....i use it and it's great

I'm from one of the country, where u cant see the payd app. And i have a sim from Uk. For instancy, in my country Google Maps doesnt have updates( navigation beta and all other futures) and i put the sim from uk i download from market the update, but no succes the navigation are not availeble for here. But i try them in Uk and works perfect. And i see also the paid app. But that doesn't help me that much. I'm not cheap, but i'm a bit afraid to pay the app with my phone. By the way, how safetly it is to buy the app from your phone?!

your dealing with google here.. it takes care of all your transactions and sends the money to the developer, you can also refund if you didn't like the app within 24 hours of purchase, if you purchase it again after refund you can't get another refund, sounds like a fair deal.
Since my first post i've bought 2 more applications with my inactive vodafone simcard.
The thoery works guys, its easy and effective.
does this work in ythe UK? if so how?
i just bought a desire locally. i called the woman to ask about it, she said it had a sim card slot and it does work with AT&T. i was excited because i have always wanted one, last time i tried trading for one the canadian post sent my phone back :/ anyway, the phone was dead, i charged it up and what do i see? the Alltel boot screen...i figured i cant use it but id like to play around with it, root it etc. my question is, when rooted, what would this specific model be worth? if i can make back my $100 ill be happy, thats really all i want...

Alltel is a CDMA carrier. They were merged with Verizon within the last few years. Because it isnt a world phone it doesnt have a SIM slot, so in turn, its pretty useless to me.
Wouldn't it be easier to just pull the battery to see if there's a SIM card slot instead of all this stuff about carriers? You have the phone physically there in front of you, don't you?
Regarding what it's worth, I couldn't begin to tell you for a CDMA phone. Where I am in Europe, I've seen secondhand GSM Desires for sale from 50 to 500 euros.
The phone is in front of me, I have pulled the battery. It does indeed have no sim slot, if it did I probably would have already used it. All this stuff about carriers is exactly why I cannot use it, Im just simply trying to figure out whether or not I will be able to get my money for it considering I rarely see the CDMA model.
You should be able to make back the $100. Have a look on Ebay.
Hey,
Does anyone know if there are any plans to bring this device to Europe or if I can import it from Japan or something?
I love the look of it, but I really want a phone with at least 32gb storage which isn't looking likely atm... If none of the nokia phones have 32gb+ I really want to try and get one of these Fujitsu phones.
been very interested in the is12t as well for availability. but its been dead silent
Its unlikely as it was provisioned by the carrier in Japan KDDI or something like that. Also it is CDMA and the tech used in Japan will only work in Japan on the cdma network there.
It is possible another, similar device for GSM could be released after some prior of time.

Well, just call those shops which import Japanese games and comics and they should do the job for you.
Here is the link in Yahoo Japan, which sells IS12T standalone machines without contract and SIM lock.
http://auctions.search.yahoo.co.jp/...d&f=0x2&slider=0&tab_ex=commerce&ei=UTF-8&b=1
I may consider to get one, as NAND built-in should be much faster than MicroSD in my Trophy, esp. 32GB ones.
it's better than this device's running GSM Networktechnology

That link was great but I can't read Japanese and none of them seem to be shipping internationally (according to G Translate anyway).
Unfortunately I cant find any on ebay.

It definitely supports GSM, so should work in Europe.
Sounds like it could be SIM-locked to a Japanese carrier. Are you sure you bough an unlocked one?
Yeah it supports GSM.
I found out that all the KDDI phones are locked.
Now trying to unlock it, but don't know how. . hm
I you wish I can post some pics or a small vid if you like

Well, are you really know what those Japanese means before you buy?
白ロム(White ROM) = empty ROM
ロッククリア済(Lock clear finished) = unlocked
Many of them just said empty ROM but without stating unlocked, which are possibly be locked ones.
In google by typing "IS12T unlock" there should have website suggestions which are selling unlock services.
BTW, how much in total have you got? I may also would like to have one if it is not too costly.
I think I payed like less than 400 euro to get it.
KDDI says there are no unlocked devices and they can't be unlocked!!!
Hm now to work on this otherwise I have to sell it again XD

They said, but there are somebody who has full paid the machine should have got the unlocked ones. (Unlocked by default/standalone, locked when got bundled plan)
According to this site:
http://nanapho.jp/archives/tag/IS12T/page/2/
You may check if it is really unlocked.
Step:
1) Choose "Wi-Fi" in "Settings"
2) Press the "PRL Setting" button for 10 secs or more
3) Press "*6#27" when the numeric keypad comes out
4) The page will be jumped to "Information"
If the column "Line Registered" is 0, then it is unlocked, otherwise (1) it is locked.
Thank you for the information.
I checked it and it says "0" so it is unlocked!
Maybe my sim cards are not working properly I had some issues earlier.
I tried different things and nothing seems to work :-(
If someone is interested I am going to sell it for 380 euro just pn me
It is the best phone I ever held in my hand!!!

The phones color is black.

I'm on the verge of buying an S3 but off a friend. I talked to a T-mo rep and she was telling me about buying a Micro-SIM because cutting down the old ones won't work with WiFi calling and I would get signal issues. I'm pretty sure the signal issues don't have anything to do with the SIM card and WiFi calling doesn't appeal to me since I always have full signal in my house. I just want to know if I need to buy a new SIM card or not. Thanks everyone!

Good question if you ask me, does anyone know if it can be done?
Just got to a Tmobile store and ask for a micro sim. THey have them for free, or pm me and I'll send you one.
Then once you have the phone you can either call or go to the store and have them switch your line over to the new sim. If you call, just don't use the phone you are switching the sim from as it will drop the call once they enter the new sim card for your line.
Sim cards are usually free at T-Mobile I heard cutting down old sim cards will give you problems but not exactly sure what.
Just go to the store and ask for a new sim card and they can transfer everything over for you.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
When you go to the tmo store, make sure the card they give you is one that is capable of wifi calling. None of them in my area have the ones that are, you might have to get it from customer service.
I ran into this issue as well. I just figured the SIM from my Galaxy nexus would work with the S3 I purchased through Wirefly.com but it was too big (obviously). As others mentioned, I just went up to the local T-Mobile store and asked for a micro sim card to use with my new phone. They activated one and gave it to me all within 2 minutes of entering the store, free of charge.
I would laugh if T-Mobile tried to charge me for a new SIM card to use with their service. They should provide SIM cards for free, much the same as your bank giving you a replacement debit card at no extra charge since you are using their services.
There lying they just want u to get the "new" Sims that have throttling and tethering detection ... have my sim card from 2005 cut and using it on tmobile. 4g hspa+ no issues wifi calls work..

Before I got my s3, i went to my local t mobile store and told them i need a micro sim card for my new s3. They gave me one without a problem for free. I think in order to get one for free, you must be on a two year contract with t mobile and your account has to be in good standing.
if not try this http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/Phones/cell-phone-detail.aspx?cell-phone=T-Mobile-Micro-SIM-Card it should work.
if that does not work, try ebay. if that does not work then just pay your t mobile store.
Hi everybody ,

I searched in amazon forum and found they said it is locked to AT&T but some guys mentioned it is unlocked.I'm completely confused .
can anybody help me for this subject ?
by the way if this tablet is locked ,is there any method for unlocking ?
Thanks
Nobody can help me ?

Well, in the Amazon reviews there are quite a few folks talking about using it overseas. The SIM isn't the problem, it's not locked and it works fine as long as your carrier has compatible technology. (Note: The ones that AT&T is selling directly with a contract and a subsidy are probably locked.)
I bought mine at a local retailer (Microcenter), and simply inserted the SIM from my carrier (A T-Mobile reseller) and changed the APN settings and that was pretty much that.
As I said above though, there IS a problem using it overseas - if Amazon doesn't sell Apps and Content in your country, and they won't sell it to you on the HD. The work around is to purchase VPN services from a US provider. I haven't looked into whether VPN is included in the stock ROM or whether it can be added later.
According to the discussions on Amazon, you CAN reconfigure it to work there. So, spend a little time with Google and the Amazon web site and you should find useful information on what's needed.
