When the official ICS is released... - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Will I be able to download the official update that sprint pushes to my phone if I am on one of the leaked ICS builds or any custom rom?
Sorry if this is a noob question, just want to be safe, as I heard the official release will be in about 10 days.

The release is for the INTERNATIONAL SGS2. that has nothing to do with this phone ie the E4GT. There is no release date for the E4GT official final for ICS at all.

If you are rooted, most likely not. I would also be surprised to see a release on the 15th. The Galaxy S II maybe, but not the Galaxy S II/EPic 4G Touch.

OK, regardless of release date, will we be able to update to the official release with a leaked or custom rom?

If it's anything like how EG30 was and how EK02 was just and update no you would have to be on a EL29 build. Regardless of that if you are rooted why would you take the update vs waiting a few hours or so for an updated rooted rom from a dev? that's saying we don't get the official final 3+ weeks before hand like we got EL29 as well.

Exactly. And the way Samsung does things, they release the source before the ROM so kernels are updated before the ROM drops, which usually results in the leaks working for weeks later (I never switched to EL29 for example, just kept using EL13 with EL29 kernels until about a week before the ICS leaks started).
I know it's hard to not get excited once OTA's begin (which will probably be a few months after international release) but just cool your jets and at most a few hours after the OTA's start pushing out the development forum will explode with new ROMs

The reason I am asking is because I flashed calks beta 3 onto my buddies phone. I am not sure if I will see him for a while so I want to be sure to tell him whether or not he can update, officially, later. I am not going to use the official release at all. Looks like he won't be either.

If you are not going to see him for awhile never flash a beta of an alpha rom on a phone /smh I'm sure he wants to play with ICS but in all honesty if you are not going to be able to update his phone with an official build or a newer one that's not beta that's not very smart the rom does still have issues. and no he will NOT be able to install the Official release.

Sound advice here. You never know when an issue can pop up on a beta. It could be an hour, a day, or a week. I have been running beta 2 for a couple of days now but if I was going to be away from my laptop for a few days I would be back on Gingerbread for sure

ICS and rooted phone

Couple questions.
1. Will I get the official ICS update when it's released being rooted?
2. If not, should I just download it from XDA now?

Yes you will get the update being rooted. Also there is no t989 ICS. Probably wont be for a while.

You will get the update if you are STOCK rooted, not if using a custom ROM.
IF you have CWM installed (and I am sure you do), it could put you in a bootloop if you take the OTA.
IF you flash any of the current ICS builds that are based on Skyrocket, you will loose Wi-Fi calling ..
Just an FYI ...

I was close to jumpin ship with this phone and picking up a Galaxy Nexus. Looked like we were never going to get anything for this bad boy!

Does anyone know if sprint is going.to release an official ics? Rumors I heard was that early June that we would see an official update to ics?

looks like your new so im not gonna flame you, but just do some reading bro, ICS is the most talked about thing in this forum. A little reading will go a long way.
To answer your question, there is no confirmed date but we have had great running leaked builds for months now.

there have been approx 30 leaked revisions of ICS for our device. We should be seeing it officially any time now.

Edit:Our device is the epic 4g touch on this forum
If you were able to root you HTC the epic is much easier to root there are one click tools to root the epic in the dev forum sfubs has easy to follow instructions and there are gb based roms and if you want a taste of ICS roms as stated I would root just to get rid of bloatware

Sextape posted it a few days ago. It's ICS with searched nerfed and updated radios and kernel from what he could tell.

I don't think this is an epic fail at all. It seems like there is a 26 day turn around time from testing to roll-out. If anything remains consistent, I'm hoping we see jelly bean sometime mid august.

Never a good idea to accept an ota when rooted and rom'd. This is especially true if your ROM is JB and you accept an ICS ota. It is still fresh in the community's hands but rest assured anything of value from this small update will be integrated into community ROMS.

The official radio was posted on July 16 out of the FG01 by Sextape. Initially he didn't want to release the full FG01 so he just did the radio, but after a few days changed his mind and released the whole enchilada. So, if you head to that link you can grab just the radio if that is all you're interested in.
no one should be including radios in roms.
and there was a cwm flashable zip of the radios made teh day they leaked
Is there any advantage to flashing that radio? I'm on the jellin Rom, with fd02 radio.

MR 4 means Maintenance Release 4.
It's their 4th maintenance release for the phone.
I think it went EL26 -> EL29 -> FF18 -> FH13. were all OTAs
Was expecting this since they added FH13 to the open source page this morning as mentioned over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30559316&postcount=202

As long as the "core" apps are in place and all you did was root, according to the sfhubs threads with one clicks, you'll get the ota.
That being said - being rooted alone, people have failed at getting ota pushes.
If you really want ota, best bet is to go back stock and unless anyone can say different, that means going back to ek02..
(My 2 cents..)

Be interesting to compare the actual files after release.
So we're the first US variant of the Galaxy S3 to get Jelly Bean? Sweet.

This ota seems to be the same as the latest leak. It might have a few tweaks but probably nothing major. If your already rooted and on rooted stock, just wait for the rooted stock version to update to, or go back to EL29 and unroot and then wait for the update.
Sprint rolls out OTA's in waves though, so your looking at a few weeks in waiting time possibly.
