So, i think i bricked my device. Downloaded caulkin rom and tried to flash it. when i booted into rogue rootbloater i flashed the rom from my downloads. my bad. why does it matter though whether or not i flash from internal or external memory. annnd ?
It doesnt matter if the rom is in the internal or sd unless dev says something about it in op. As far as your brick, im not understanding fully what you mean

What makes you think you're bricked? What happens when you try to power the phone on?

If I would have had a sd i would not have a brick right now though :/
I think. cause the new rom switched bootloaders and the new one only recog'ed the sd i think.

so lets say after you pull battery you press the power button....nothing happens?
Pull the battery
Put it back in
press power and see what happens
-- You can also...
Pull the battery
Put the battery back in
press vol down + power and try to get into odin mode
If you can get into Odin mode, then you're not bricked.

Do you want help or not? The E4GT is a very difficult phone to brick and 9 times out of 10 when a noob thinks their phone is bricked, it's actually easily recoverable. But if you don't help us help you, you might as well just toss the phone down the garbage disposal.
Can you get into download mode?

Just picture me as a little bald boy holding a spoon...
There is no button.
Keeping the battery out for a while might work.
I've also heard that you can "jump start" your phone by taking the battery out and plugging in power while the battery is out, getting it to boot that way, then putting the battery in while it's on. That may only apply to a fully discharged battery, but if your phone is truly dead it's worth a try.
With the battery out, plug the phone into a computer and try to get into download mode. If you can you should be able to start Odin and even pop the battery back in.
maybe i'm missing something here,
but i thought you were supposed to check the re-partition box when ODIN back to stock.
Or at least, that's what i do everytime i odin back to stock and my phone is fine.
Dang it. There really is no button!
Repartition isn't something you want or need to use regularly, but it shouldn't cause problems like you describe unless you used a pit from another phone or something... sounds more like it was interupted during flashing of boot.bin or param.lfs or something...

I was in the same boat until a few minutes ago.
For me the trick was plugging to USB cable into the back ports of my desktop PC. I had tried different ports in my laptop, the front ports of my desktop, and the battery-in-battery-out thing. I also did break down and get a cable from Radio Shack. I thought I could cheat with a powered USB hub.
Now I am back to stock EC05 Froyo. Only trick is finding a place to download an EI22 or EL30 rom now that all the mega-upload sites have been taken down.
Many thanks for all the suggestions. I almost bought an Epic Touch -- which I really don't want.

It has nothing to do with being on contract. Basicly it is one if these options:
1) Bad download. This CAN happen from ROM manager also.
2) You messed up the install, you said something about messing with SystemUI so that may have been it.
3) Your phone is borked.....not likely at all.
My bet is 1 or 2.

You are coming from an HTC device, yes?
A bad radio flash on HTC devices will certainly brick your device.
That is not the case with Samsung devices though. I've seen some individuals with bad radio flashes, and fastboot still works fine to flash a new one.

I don't know if if the Galaxy Nexus suffers from the same issue as the Samsung Moment, but with that phone, flashing a boot.png (on the GN it's the very first static, black and white 'Google' screen when the phone turns on) larger in size that the existing one, or having too many colors, etc would cause an instant perma-brick. I don't know if we're to the point with the GN where we can freely flash that sort of thing, but I know it worked (didn't work?) on the Moment.
The first post here has the list of guidelines for flashing boot.png images that were discovered trial-by-fire by Moment users.
So, are you guys saying it's next to impossible to brick the Galaxy Nexus if just flashing the basic stuff?

You have no idea how relieved that makes me.
I come from an HTC Nexus One and I never once flashed a radio on it, and I didn't wanna mess too much with bootloaders as an incorrect flashing of the two would acquire a brick.
I'm only on user-level (and flashing, of course) so I don't think I'll ever manage to brick it.

Ok so long story short my S3 is hard bricked. This was my first try at doing my own root and rom install. Im not sure where I messed up at.
1. I got a toolkit from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1746682
2. Backed up all system files with the toolkit, and saved pics to my computer.
3. downloaded oden and clockworks restore (cant remember the name)
4. did factory reset
5. cleared cache
6. then installed the S3 rom I got from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1663656
I followed all the instructions as best I could and it still messed up. is there anything I can do to reset it back to default??
Nothing comes on. no lights, no screen, no sound. only thing I get is if I take out the battery and plug it up i get a led light for about 12 secs.

I know on my old Samsung Vibrant (Galaxy S) it was practically impossible to brick the phone completely. You could always access download mode to restore the ROM using ODIN.
How to enter download mode on Samsung Galaxy S3
Volume down ,home, and power until the warning.
http://youtu.be/0BJlfbZNB-I
Please note I have no experience flashing ROMs on the S3 as of yet. I plan to flash the new OTA update with root already injected tomorrow.
The first time I flashed a ROM using ODIN, it screwed up somehow and of course the phone didn't work. I was freaking at that point. Then I read about download mode and was able to flash the ROM successfully.
Your best option is jtag. I flashed an incorrect rom and had to replace the main board on my SGS3 as the jtag didn't work for me.
If you're in the USA this is the person to go to, they are linked everywhere on xda

It's from the international section, anything from the international section will brick our phones, they are completely different, they have 4 cores and 1gb ram, we have 2 cores and 2gb ram. The only roms that are safe to flash are the ones in the T-Mobile galaxy s3 section

ok thankx alot. So from checking the net my options are to pay 60$ for a jtag, play dumb for t mobile and get it replaced since they wont be able to turn it on. or buy a new phone. Is there any cons to the t mobile rote? I mean what are the chances of it biting my in the rear?
Personally I would get it jtaged. Rather than have Tmobile take care of your mess up and passing the cost on to the rest of their consumers.
