Hello out there,
since I wiped my phone and updated to the most recent CyanogenMod 7 build (#262), my problem regularly freezes when switching from 3G to 2G mode. The only thing to get the device running again is to remove the battery and reinsert it again. If i'm still in an area or room with only 2G coverage, the phone freezes soon after boot-up.
Help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
toco
My phone:
HTC Desire (GSM)
PVT1 S-OFF
RADIO-5.17.05.23
CyanogenMod 7 20120225-NIGHTLY
Android ver. 2.3.7, kernel 2.6.37.6
What I'd do in this order:
1) stop using nightlies
2) change kernel
3) change radio
There was this guy whose phone froze every time he was in space with low or no 3G coverage, and I think changing kernel from snq's to some other solved it for him.

Thanks for your quick response!
Ok, I appreciate your advice. If the problem keeps occurring I will switch back to the latest stable.
But, still something strange about it: I had absolutely no problem the first weeks i was using this nightly (262 was since November 2011 the latest nightly until today), the problem started to occur from one day to the other.
I am using the radio version since probably half a year or even more, without any problems.
Also, 262 was reported (cyanogenmod forums, other forums) to be very stable on the Desire, almost no people reported having problems with it. That's why i decided to update to build 262. I for my part am suspecting a software being the cause for the freezes, but i have no clue which one.. I even checked the system logs.
As for the kernel: Call me a noob, but how do i change the kernel? I know how to root devices, flash recoveries and roms, but how can i change the kernel directly?
Greetings,
toco

Kernel is flashed the same way as roms are. Make sure you use a correct one, manU 2.1 is probably the most popular of those which will work on cyanogenmod.

if that doesn't work:
Dialer/

phone settings > network type: WCDMA only
Alright, one more thing: If I change the kernel to let's say Manu 2.1 - how can I switch back to the original CM7 kernel again? Just by reinstalling the CM7 ROM?
Thanks!

Wait, if I set it to WCDMA only I can only access data services when in a 3G covered area, right? Thats not optimal either because i'm regularily visiting my parents on weekends, where only 2G coverage is available. Also in some buildings (esp. cellars) here in the city there is only 2G coverage.

Yeah, but it can solve the issue, I get it intermittently sometimes too but after a reboot or two its usually fine.

I would have written you a PM but as I'm not yet allowed to (too few xda posts) I have to put the question here: What happens on May 7th (your signature)? Because i'm looking for an adequate successor to my Desire (~3,7" display) as well.

I have done that one month ago and no a SINGLE freeze
I had about 5 a week before
It was mostly difficult on a train trip.
I am a heavy user of those very fast french train and i suffered of freeze about 3 times per trip (3 hours running 300 kmh)
Since the "bending" of sim an sd card = SOLVED !!
Thanks, that seemed to help! Even if i don't get the logic behind that.. but i don't have to, i just want a working phone
Thanks again mate!
There seems to be a lot of people complaining about desire freeze
I thins this should be tried by those since it fixes freeze for me and for you too !!!
Happy this helps you
I am using an other rom, but had the same issues. Problems gone with new kernel.
Droidzones kernel did it 4 me, but i am on a sense 3.5 rom.
Try with uv and other governors too. But i think its a kerne related problem.

3G to 2G freeze - solved
Hi,
I had the same issue: on 3G to 2G network change the phone froze. When moved out of 3G coverage, sometimes during/after the call (probably due to 3G-to-2G handover during the call), seconds after forcing the phone to 'GSM only'. I tried different ROMs, different radios, no success. Finally the guilty component was found: microSD card.
I changed from class 10 to class 4 and suddenly the issue disappeared.
The logic behind this is hard to grasp, but I tried two different ROMs now on a slower card and no freezing for couple of days now.

I have just installed Evils Custom Barebone rom v5 on the dev bord for desire, its a rom build that has no sense, just helixlauncher2. Now before i installed this i had the stock rom running and that always kicked my network preference to G and if i set it to HSDPA only, i would get scratchy 3G/H... Since installing the bareback rom, which has no sense running at all, i am on 3g or h constantly, and when i load a web page it always kicks into H.
I must also add that after i rooted i also updated my radio (baseband) to the new one released, the asia update
This could mean that sense applications or sense itself is forcing our phones to 2G networks as preference, I know this idea is out of the box but its looking that way, especially in my case.

very good news! although it's most likely the radio update that has fixed the problem! (i had the issue with the HD2 and it was discovered that it was not the fault of the Sense services that the connection would drop)
please keep us updated as it can take a while for the connection to drop, it can stay stable for hours and then drop like crazy.
thanks for posting but do keep us updated!
thanks!
Its definatly not the radio update mate as i still had the problem straight after rooting and updating to the new radio..... The problem only was solved when i installed the custom barebone rom, i now have HSDPA on tap, instead of blank spells when i had wcdma only on previous to the custom rom.
I just added that if people want to replicate what i did, then they have the full picture
Plus constant 3 bars of 3g reception

strange
well please do some further testing and report back! download a 50mb file while surfing the net and see if it drops
if it doesn't then there is a fault with Sense which HTC must fix.
ok gonna test now, also just made a phone call which was liquid! pure liquid!! No breaks or anything... I think we may be on to something here guys! something thats pretty big!
This rom is avoid of any sense, sense looking like what is killing our connections;(
JD
Started to download 114mb nvidia graphics driver, whilst on 3 bars it was downloading very fast, then it dropped to two bars, and it hung, after downloading 2mb, then it popped back up to three bars, downloaded another 2mb and then dropped back down again to two bars. When surfing it always stays three bars. It looks like tmobile have put a cap on how much we can download in bursts.
Im still noticing 95 percent surfing on hsdpa improvment.
JD
also i think removing sense and all of its RAM burden helps the phone to make better and faster decision's. This could be whats happening here
Also reporting a better WIFI signal strength, wad usually one bar from my room, now is now a constant 2 bars on signal icon
Stock T-Mobile ROM, never had any issues?
This seems to happen with every new HTC release. Could it just be poor network performance?
Why do I never have issues? Live around Nottingham but work all over the UK, no problems with HSPA.
Ok, i unchecked under location, determine location by wifi towers.... Went to download that 114mb file again,
Worked 100 percent.
downloaded in just under 10 mins no hang))
so its solved!!

Paul some people are having intermittant G/3G/HSDPA
My problem was solved by not having Sense And with the CM Mod being uploaded as we speak i will see if its to draw with that as well.
But im definatly getting faster, always H speeds now, and the only thing i changed was the rom

i must be lucky i dont seem to have the issue
So if some people have it and others don't how can it be device and not network related?
It's OS and Network related.
There's an open bug on the android development site about it. I don't know all the ins and outs but the OS seems to have some difficulty re-acquiring dropped signals. So if your network has dodgy 3G coverage you're more likely to experience this.
I'm sure it's far more complicated than my explanation though and involves all kinds of fascinating intricacies regarding the type of 3G coverage and automatic switching between the different connections yadda yadda...
Yeah its pretty deep, all i know is it has been fantastic since Sense has been off my phone

Just to clarify here, switching rom and radio on your phone did not solve the issue as there was still a dropout, but what has fixed it is disabling the location, what do you mean location by wifi towers?
Hi,
Two days back my htc desire suddenly lost connection to the mobile network. I now get a small cross on top of the signal bars and "no service" written on the notification bar. Sometimes this changes to "sos".
The wifi is working fine. t
The only problem is voice and data over the mobile network.
I tried a lot of things:
reboot
flashed a new radio
complete wipe/ factory reset
flashed a new rom
But to no avail.
A strange thing did occur though, at a mall, my phone suddenly started working for a few minutes and then went back to the same state as before. This same thing happened last night too.
I am unable to understand this and request all of you to help.
current status:
Phone: htc desire amoled

So I assume the problem would be the ROM
Any solution to this? Patches or something?

Regarding the above problem.. had the same thing... what i did is this..
on dial pad use *#*#4636#*#*
then goto phone information (first one)
scroll down you'll see "set preferred network type"
mine was selected "WCDMA" I changed that to "GSM Only"
Since then no problem of S.O.S has come to me
I am sending it here because I am unable to post in the forum... something to do with minimum of 10 Post.. Hope this helps
Guys thanks for your replies.
I have already done the *#*#4636#*#* bit and it hasn't helped.
Regarding the rom, I was originally on cyanogenmod 7 when this problem started. I re-flashed CM7. Didn't help. Then i flashed miui. the problem remains.
Although I would like to add that over the past two days, at two different locations, I have been able to make one call and recieve one. How this happens, I don't know.
Still trying to figure it out but I just read elsewhere on this forum an exactly similar problem being faced by a few people during the last few days.... so keeping my fingers crossed.
Ah! and one more thing, I have tried sim cards of almost all operators and none work in this phone.
Same problem here aswell,
me too tried every thing,
but non of them helpfull..
Still searching for help
This may seem like a dumb question, but the people experiencing this problem, are you in the same country/region?

A little update in my situation:
I visited another city for an hour yesterday and the phone latched onto vodafone in seconds and worked like a charm but as soon as i got back to base, it was back to its dead state.
This is a really confusing situation because, one moment it seems like its a hardware problem (since none of the operator's sims tend to work in it while in delhi) and then sometimes it seems to be a network problem (as it seems to work just fine in some areas)
Guys, please.... please help. This is so frustrating.
guys i'm still waiting for a reply.... doesn't anyone here have a solution to my problem?

Hey this worked but only partially. Now the phone does latch on to network at most places except two: my workplace and home.
And in some places it shows full signal strength but calling is not possible.
Hi,
I'm using the COS-Bravo - ICS [21-May-2012] on my phone. Since the first version I flashed I've been having the same problem, but as the ROM is under development, I thought the problem would get fixed in some update. It still hasn't so I'm reporting it.
When loosing a WIFI connection, the phone must switch to a 2G or 3G network. This doesn't happen. Mostly the WIFI icon disappears as it disconnects and the signalstatus doesn't change (no Edge, Gprs or Hdspa is added). When I go to Airplane mode and back or when I switch between 2G/3G, the connection is repaired and the data-connection works again.
I've also noticed this problem with other ICS roms (Sanvold and BCM)
Does anybody have a clue what this could be?
Radio
What radio version do you have?
Its recommended to have the latest radio.
You can find the latest radio here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=687464

I have the same issue. When turning wifi off, my Desire doesn´t get a mobile connection though it´s showing, that i would be connected.
Switching to 3g and back doesn´t work for me.

Same problem here with Sandvolds ICS
I have this problem nearly 2 years now on every rom (stock eclair, froyo and cm7) and on every radio version, so I guess it is hardware depended.
Correct me if i am wrong.
What I do is switching to airplane mode and back, so i have to enter my PIN again.
Maybe there is a soltution, cause this is really drving me nuts
Thx
With the newest version (01-06-2012) the problem seems to be solved (for me). Perhaps you should give it a try.
I´ve been glad to hasty. It still does not work. Neither does it to switch between 2g and 3g. But the airplane-"hack" does work for me too.
I have same problem with COS ROM. Mobile internet connection after using telephone as wifi modem do'nt working successfully.... i need reboot phone, airplane mode not solving this problem..
Hi!
Same problem here (HTC Desire Bravo, GSM, Cos-Bravo 1st June, latest radio).
This "bug" is present in every ICS Rom and as well in some GB Roms I tried. So far, the RSK ROM Sense 3.5 with amaze cam doesn't have this issue.
I hope someone will get to it. I'm more than ready to donate if someone will be able to solve this out with next build.
Thanks.

To judge from my own experience - I'm still seeing this problem six months later - it has not been fixed yet. Or does it only affect a subset of Desires?
I'm experiencing it using a GB ROM - Mildwild 4.7, though it was there in 4.6 as well. I can only assume it is in the ROMs, as I get it on two different handsets, a PVT3 running radio-5.17.05.23 and a PVT1 rrunning radio-5.11.05.27.
cheers,

Remove the skipbrokendatacall entry in build.prop file. This will not completely resolve the problem but will make it very much manageable.
Check your APN Settings and try to set APN-Type to default only.

Hey There,
I've just installed this fine ROM today, and it seems great,
but for some reason, the wifi reception is BAD now.
It works fine if I seat near my router, but if I move 3 meters away
it looses the connection ... and says the reception is POOR.
Any1 else has this problem?
Which version of CM10 did you flash, if it's anything older than beta 1 try flashing Beta 1 ? if you still have problems after Beta1
Try flashing a different kernel and see if that resolves your problem. (if i can spare you some time, try faux123's kernel)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647993
And then if you still have problems.
Try running the Viper ROM 2.6.0 with the Butter hacks runs very smooth.

Thanks for the quick replay
I flashed the "[08-09] [ROM] CyanogenMod 10 - Endeavor Unleashed" rom.
I don't think this is the same cm10 everyone's using.
and I don't really understand, doesn't the Kernal comes with the rom?
Can I change it without changing a rom ?

But on the stock rom WIFI was ok.
Update: Ok I did the "Squeeze" test. Wifi is great whn I squeeze
So it is a hardware problem?? How it only started after I put CM10?
Have you reinstalled the stock rom since you have the problem?
I don't know if CM10 is the cause, or it's a coincidence..
there's an UNOFFICIAL release at the moment which may fix some issues, though I've not noticed anything and I've had every release since A10 installed, so it could be a hardware issue.
I'm on the newest build of cm10 and my WiFi network is fine. I can from leedroid and so far just the same. I do have a tiny bit of earphone cable between my back and hard case which gives me my full bar due to the hardware fault.
Couldnt be bothered sending it back. So this works. Bit did recorded it with HTC so they know I have the fault.

But if you use Cm10 without that little earphone cable, the wifi won't work good?
BTW, what does htc support ask to fix the problem? Do they care you rooted and unlocked the device?
The cable is about 3mm in lengh and as i have a hard case, its enough to compress the connection inside the phone where the fault is.
Htc would of course fix it, but whats the point if the phone is working and its not noticeable.
I would have had to relock bootloader and go back on stock rom.

Problem is I can't get back to stock! from what I understand the Stock RUU for my phone wasn't released ...
Do you think HTC will be "understanding" and fix the wifi issue even with a custom rom?
(they'll know anyway that I opened bootloader)
Try flash the Rom with the stock kernel, that will surely solve the WiFi problem.

Did you not do a backup before installing custom rom. Im positive that even if you relock the bootloader they can see that if they went in to recovery. But unlikely. So if you flash stock rom and re lock bootloader, remove root you should be fine

Hi, try using tbaldens CM10. It can be found under HTC ONE X ORIGINAL ANDROID DEVELOPMENT. I found this to be the best CM10
I have been chasing this problem ever since installing CM10 on my Evo 4g LTE. I was getting 4 times the wifi distance on the stock rom. I go about 30 ft. outside the office and wifi drops. Also, what is the most annoying... I stream over our LAN, and when the screen is off, it turns wifi off after a few minutes. (and yes, the check box is checked to keep wifi alive). I've also tried all of the wifi fix apps and none work. If I leave the screen on and stream........ it is good anywhere from 1/2 hour to an hour, then it will just stop. This kills my battery of course. The problem 1st occured when I first bought my OEM 4g lte, but there was an option in the advanced menu "best wifi performance", after checking that, it worked great, then I switched to CM10 and I now have the wifi issue, and there is no option for "best wifi performance". I've tried a couple other jellybean roms and they have the issue as well. This is driving me nuts. I hope someone finds a solution. I don't think the average person would find this as a problem, but when I stream over the net and move all about the shop, it is unacceptable.
I faced the same issue but not on any other ROM. It was specifically with Cyanogenmod 10. I was upset because it gave me the best results but the wifi result was really poor.
However, since I work with wireless networks often, I decided to explore Cyanogenmod's wifi settings. I noticed that if you go in the Advanced Wifi functions (which you can find in the Wifi options menu) you will notice that there is an option called "Wi-Fi Region Code".
Apparently, this option allows you to select the frequency bands your device can operate and is subject to the different world regions. It is quite possible that your Access Point follows the regulatory body of your country and you should know which frequency bands they allow the AP to operate. Due to this it may be just that the Cyanogenmod, by default, put you in a different regulatory domain and limits your frequency band to a subset offered by the AP. Hence, this effectively limits your wifi reach even if you are sitting right next to the AP.
I chose "Japan" since I remembered that their regulatory domain allowed for quite a large subset of frequencies that are allowed on the WIFI spectrum. This immediately increased my received signal strength and I did not have any problem since.
I suggest you play with this, it is likely that your android device will start functioning correctly. However, if you are facing this limited frequency issue on more than one device and that too running different operating systems and different wifi hardware...chances are that your wifi router is malfunctioning. In that case, replacement or repair of the Access point is the best alternative.
Good luck. I hope this solves your problem.

I've tried changing my Region Code, but for some reason it keeps defaulting back to Europe... Any ideas? I've tried changing it numerous times, same result.
Hi all, I posted in the CM10 support thread, but this issue doesn't seem to be well known so I'm raising it in its own thread.
I'm not having much luck with my newly-purchased Defy+. The factory firmware suffered random reboots, which is pretty well documented. I installed the latest CM10-20121018-NIGHTLY-mb526.zip, and the random reboots have stopped. However I now get occasional dropouts of phone and 3G service.
Usually, I find out when either I try to use data and even though the 3G icon suggests a connection, no data is transferred. Then the phone app hangs when I try to make a call. If people call me, they *do* get a ringtone, but my phone doesn't make any sound or visual feedback that there's a call coming in. Aircraft mode doesn't rescue the situation, I have to reboot the phone to get it to work.
Hope someone can help - I came from a rock-solid CM7 / HTC Desire HD setup, and this is doing my head in. Am happy to provide any more debug information as required.
NB I see from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31440310&postcount=321 that there is a known 3G data dropout bug on these phones, but that's not what I see - I can't make phone calls either. Plus my ROM has that fix in.
I have installed Connection Checker which will hopefully give me details of if there's any pattern to the problematic behaviour. Look forward to any feedback, thanks in advance.

I'll let this go, but be aware that usually double posting will result in any subsequent threads being closed.
Change baseband. I had the same problem. It's solved changing the baseband.
Mine was Europe\central Europe\3.4.x or 3.4.2-145 changing to 2.21 no problem at all.

Thanks for the response, it's interesting and heartening. I can't find a factory SBF so I can't take it back to the shop.
FWIW, I find the baseband screen confusing. My service provider is Golan Telecom. They have a UMTS 2100MHz network, and rely on roaming with another local provider - Cellcom for GSM 900/1800 and UMTS 850/2100.
I think I understand the frequencies but not what the 2.21 etc means.
As I type this, the phone has been on 2.21 for 20 minutes, and is now exhibiting the problem again.
I am now trying Asia / China 0.26/1.10 which has frequencies 850/2100 MHz. If for no other reason than Israel isn't listed in the list. However, that didn't work for long, if at all. I'm absolutely hating this.
Can you or anyone add to this by suggesting how I might choose the right baseband out of the options given?
Try one by one according to your location.

Well, my location (Israel) isn't in the list. I've tried many settings, with varying results, but not one has been able to avoid this problem where the phone (app as in the actual telephone) just hangs and I lose voice and data. I can keep going, but I don't understand why one would magically work. I think 900/2100 should work with my SP, and I don't understand the differences between the myriad of options that still result in the same frequencies. Have I missed something?
Is there anything else worth trying? I have heard that sometimes it can be a SIM problem, but my SIM isn't even a year old.
I think I have a fix, due to great work by coas (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31025913&postcount=34).
My carrier (Golan Telecom) has a national roaming agreement with Cellcom. It seems that flashing the Cellcom radio for the Defy Plus has fixed the issue. It's been up for four hours now, which is four times as long as before.
I guess the issue is that flashing the SBF to root the Defy Plus, messed up the radio in some way, but I don't really understand the whole radio issue, and what is different in radios from different carriers' firmware. I thought GSM was GSM and UMTS was UMTS. Anyway it seems to be working so I'm not complaining.
Just wanted to put this here for the benefit of anyone else who might be having the same issue.
Sadly, it was a short-lived "fix". Still unreliable, just not quite as bad. I'm going to try the Orange (Partner) radio .sbf which coas tells me is updated, and if not, then return it to factory firmware and take it back to the shop.

If you are willing to stick with a Custom ROM, you can try a different setting on the CPU Settings.
Not a long time ago, I had similar problems and solved it enabling "load all modules" and "conservative" settings in the custom recovery.
Good Luck and let me know if it worked for you.
Hi, thanks for the answer. I didn't update the thread, but I can confirm that I took it back to the shop. The guy knew about the problem and replaced the handset, and now it's fine. So it's a hardware issue - he said it happens on around 1 in 5 Defy Pluses.
Hi, I had the very same problem with my defy+, it suffered that issue on CM9 and CM10. I could not resolve it and had to go back to stock, it works fine now.
It seems the problem is more frequent with national roaming in use.
After the replacement, is everything working fine even with CM10?
