[Q] htc desire won't connect to a network - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Two days back my htc desire suddenly lost connection to the mobile network. I now get a small cross on top of the signal bars and "no service" written on the notification bar. Sometimes this changes to "sos".
The wifi is working fine. t
The only problem is voice and data over the mobile network.
I tried a lot of things:
reboot
flashed a new radio
complete wipe/ factory reset
flashed a new rom
But to no avail.
A strange thing did occur though, at a mall, my phone suddenly started working for a few minutes and then went back to the same state as before. This same thing happened last night too.
I am unable to understand this and request all of you to help.
current status:
Phone: htc desire amoled
s-on
bb: 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23
miui 17.15

Ring your provider.

How to solve this? I tried flashing to CM7 and its fine.
So I assume the problem would be the ROM
Any solution to this? Patches or something?
I would love to continue on using MIUI
Thanks all
Regarding the above problem.. had the same thing... what i did is this..
on dial pad use *#*#4636#*#*
then goto phone information (first one)
scroll down you'll see "set preferred network type"
mine was selected "WCDMA" I changed that to "GSM Only"
Since then no problem of S.O.S has come to me
I am sending it here because I am unable to post in the forum... something to do with minimum of 10 Post.. Hope this helps

Guys thanks for your replies.
I have already done the *#*#4636#*#* bit and it hasn't helped.
Regarding the rom, I was originally on cyanogenmod 7 when this problem started. I re-flashed CM7. Didn't help. Then i flashed miui. the problem remains.
Although I would like to add that over the past two days, at two different locations, I have been able to make one call and recieve one. How this happens, I don't know.
Still trying to figure it out but I just read elsewhere on this forum an exactly similar problem being faced by a few people during the last few days.... so keeping my fingers crossed.
Ah! and one more thing, I have tried sim cards of almost all operators and none work in this phone.

Same problem here aswell,
me too tried every thing,
but non of them helpfull..
Still searching for help

This may seem like a dumb question, but the people experiencing this problem, are you in the same country/region?

A little update in my situation:
I visited another city for an hour yesterday and the phone latched onto vodafone in seconds and worked like a charm but as soon as i got back to base, it was back to its dead state.
This is a really confusing situation because, one moment it seems like its a hardware problem (since none of the operator's sims tend to work in it while in delhi) and then sometimes it seems to be a network problem (as it seems to work just fine in some areas)
Guys, please.... please help. This is so frustrating.

guys i'm still waiting for a reply.... doesn't anyone here have a solution to my problem?

Install cm7, then full wipe and then install freshly your new rom.
I did that way and after that was network connection back.
Sry my bad english!
Sent My Desire.

i understand your frustration, im here just to tell u, i have a different situation which no one has any solution, ive googled and spent 1 whole F()[email protected]((U)#($I)(#U$)(U#)($U day but no one reported the same issue as me..
sigh

Hey this worked but only partially. Now the phone does latch on to network at most places except two: my workplace and home.
And in some places it shows full signal strength but calling is not possible.

missed calls & sms ... suddenly!!!

hi,
from time to time I experience the folowing:
Suddenly, soemone call me to other phone becuase he's trying to contact me. I see my artemis and it's OK, switched on and signal bars at 90%. I dont know why when someone try to call me appears like the phone is switched off.
I make a soft reset and strat to receive missed calls + sms's.
I have Vanilla 4.02 ROM and I use very often the wifi connection....
br.
im with you there, this is the reason why i went back to my aging nokia 6280. ive tried about 10 different roms and it would never pick up the signal unless rebooted. what happens with mine and a few of my friends was on london underground you would lose the signal obviously underground, when you came out the phone would pick up the signal but never recieve a call or sms. also the gprs wouldnt connect unless it was rebooted. ive had a few htcs in the past but because of this poor show i wont ever purchase another one.
my phone done this from day one of ownership, tmobile told me that firmware upgrades would fix this annoying problem, but it never did.
maybe you should try updating your radio ROMs
flashing different ROMs wont help
done half a dozen of them as well on my phone.

Even, I had the same problem, but since I moved to Radio version 3.21.XX, everything is just fine, no problems since then. Even 3.24.XX is out now, you should definitely give it a try. Hope it works for you!!
Cheers!
Same problem
Thanks for posting. I have the same problem with the same ROM. I'll change radio rom.
Radio Rom changed
Radio Rom changed 3.34.90 . No problems and good quality

[Q] 3uk service status?

Hi folks, just wondering if anyone is experiencing signal difficulty today? thought it was my phone(which it still might be!!) but tried 3 different roms, 3 different radio, 3 different kernels, and i can get a wifi connection, i get a network connectiob briefly every now and then, and the signal bars turn green, but i cant make calls or send texts?
I'm on 3 UK and its all perfect

hmm, ok, thanks elliotg. maybe it is my phone then!
just out of interest, could you possibly post the contents of your apn file/s for me, as i have been using dGB rom, which doesnt include any apns, and that is where the problem first arose. i did find some listed online, but if you have a working one there, if youd be willing to let me know so i can check mine and change if neccasary?
Just an update to my last post, I am still getting signal occasionally but it does seem to be dropping off a lot. Also yes I'd be happy to share my apns if you could tell me how haha
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
ok, can we first clear up, are you having probs or not? your first answer was everything is perfect, then your 2nd says your having problems? haha. and the apn is in settings-wireless and networks - mobile networks - access point names. if you have anything in there, could you possibly write down only the items that have a value. if some say "not set" dont worry about typing them out. thanks in advance
ok, so, my current situation is this. im on redux 2.31.08.lite radio 5.17.05.08 and kernel 2.6.35.13-stable (base kernel that comes with rom). i updated the kernel to thalamas mod8 (latest) which made no difference to my signal problems, but did after about 30 minutes give me wifi error, couldnt even turn wifi on. so went back to the base kernel and wifi is working fine. i can get a connection when calling probably once every 30 attempts? it just shows the calling screen, then ends call and cuts off. if i turn airplane mode on, then back off, i have to wait about 30 seconds to get a signal again, pr even have to manually search, which can take ages, or not work at all. (error while searching). in my head, i think the radio isnt working (which sounds obvious lol) but ive tried 4 different radios and all have the same problems?
im struggling now, is it the phone, or is it 3Uk?
any help will be massively greatfully recieved

[Q] HTC Desire freezes when switching from 3G to 2G

Hello out there,
since I wiped my phone and updated to the most recent CyanogenMod 7 build (#262), my problem regularly freezes when switching from 3G to 2G mode. The only thing to get the device running again is to remove the battery and reinsert it again. If i'm still in an area or room with only 2G coverage, the phone freezes soon after boot-up.
Help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
toco
My phone:
HTC Desire (GSM)
PVT1 S-OFF
RADIO-5.17.05.23
CyanogenMod 7 20120225-NIGHTLY
Android ver. 2.3.7, kernel 2.6.37.6
What I'd do in this order:
1) stop using nightlies
2) change kernel
3) change radio
There was this guy whose phone froze every time he was in space with low or no 3G coverage, and I think changing kernel from snq's to some other solved it for him.

Thanks for your quick response!
Ok, I appreciate your advice. If the problem keeps occurring I will switch back to the latest stable.
But, still something strange about it: I had absolutely no problem the first weeks i was using this nightly (262 was since November 2011 the latest nightly until today), the problem started to occur from one day to the other.
I am using the radio version since probably half a year or even more, without any problems.
Also, 262 was reported (cyanogenmod forums, other forums) to be very stable on the Desire, almost no people reported having problems with it. That's why i decided to update to build 262. I for my part am suspecting a software being the cause for the freezes, but i have no clue which one.. I even checked the system logs.
As for the kernel: Call me a noob, but how do i change the kernel? I know how to root devices, flash recoveries and roms, but how can i change the kernel directly?
Greetings,
toco

Kernel is flashed the same way as roms are. Make sure you use a correct one, manU 2.1 is probably the most popular of those which will work on cyanogenmod.

if that doesn't work:
Dialer/
*#*#4636*#*#
phone settings > network type: WCDMA only
Alright, one more thing: If I change the kernel to let's say Manu 2.1 - how can I switch back to the original CM7 kernel again? Just by reinstalling the CM7 ROM?
Thanks!

Wait, if I set it to WCDMA only I can only access data services when in a 3G covered area, right? Thats not optimal either because i'm regularily visiting my parents on weekends, where only 2G coverage is available. Also in some buildings (esp. cellars) here in the city there is only 2G coverage.

I would have written you a PM but as I'm not yet allowed to (too few xda posts) I have to put the question here: What happens on May 7th (your signature)? Because i'm looking for an adequate successor to my Desire (~3,7" display) as well.

I have done that one month ago and no a SINGLE freeze
I had about 5 a week before
It was mostly difficult on a train trip.
I am a heavy user of those very fast french train and i suffered of freeze about 3 times per trip (3 hours running 300 kmh)
Since the "bending" of sim an sd card = SOLVED !!
Thanks, that seemed to help! Even if i don't get the logic behind that.. but i don't have to, i just want a working phone
Thanks again mate!
There seems to be a lot of people complaining about desire freeze
I thins this should be tried by those since it fixes freeze for me and for you too !!!
Happy this helps you
I am using an other rom, but had the same issues. Problems gone with new kernel.
Droidzones kernel did it 4 me, but i am on a sense 3.5 rom.
Try with uv and other governors too. But i think its a kerne related problem.

3G to 2G freeze - solved
Hi,
I had the same issue: on 3G to 2G network change the phone froze. When moved out of 3G coverage, sometimes during/after the call (probably due to 3G-to-2G handover during the call), seconds after forcing the phone to 'GSM only'. I tried different ROMs, different radios, no success. Finally the guilty component was found: microSD card.
I changed from class 10 to class 4 and suddenly the issue disappeared.
The logic behind this is hard to grasp, but I tried two different ROMs now on a slower card and no freezing for couple of days now.

[Q] Limited Signal Issue

I've had this problem for a week now; at first I thought the phone had been blacklisted but this is not the case. I've reset, rebooted, changed sims, put the sim in another phone, cleared the phone, flashed new roms, unflashed, even unrooted the phone.
I've stripped the phone down and there doesnt seem to be any visible damage to the antenna. As said before, I have put another networks SIM in the phone and still have the Limited Signal problem.
Stumped.
I think its a hardware problem, roms dont cause that problems and you say you have Wipe the phone, I also have a very bad problem with my wildfire, the WiFi has a very bad reception, but for me is just annoying, you can try Updating the Radio, 3.35.20.10 is the last ...http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Wildfire:_Support_Downloads...
Flash it in the recovery, but you should have 25% of battery or more
Try turning off 3G , i ve had problems like you and once i ve turned it off signal is full all the time .

Hi,
None off the above suggestions have worked. The odd thing is, the provider name is still picked up and shown on the display, it seems to receive that much, but apart from that I still have the no signal problem. Any more ideas?
Ladies and Gentlefolk, I really need help on this, kinda surprised (and nearly crying into my cup 'o tea here) that I've had no recent response to this thread? I thought this was the forum of the all knowing, all seeing!
Have you tried network booster from the market? I seriously dont know how it works but maybe that can solve you problem. I think it is a hardware fault. Sometimes hardware can be at fault even without visible damage.
I never had this problem and dont have much experience/knowledge so cant help much.

It seems you've tried everything software wise, unrooting the phone with an ruu would definitely fix any software problems.
Edit: are you sure that flashing the radio even worked? Check the baseband version before and after flashing.
Sounds like a dodgy antenna to me.

Signal
Thanks for the replies;
I had to reflash the radio with a different version the other day as I'm now using JM's Nexus Rom and my GPS wasn't working. That still didn't solve it.
Although it is still no good as a phone I still enjoy tinkering with it and flashing new roms to it.
I was reading another thread regarding manual network scanning issues and it recommended replacing the libhtc_ril.so file. Now I know that this won't solve my issue, but does anybody have a better understanding of this .so file, or any other .so files that may cause the signal problem? The deeper depths that is coding is beyond me.
And if it is a hardware problem, where exactly is the antenna? I cannot find any schematics for the Wildfire on the web. If anybody has a copy of this, or a link to it, that'd be great.
Hardware issue or coverage issue, roms don't have any associations with coverage things!!
Now bare with me, i'm very very new with rooting and custom roms.
I don't know if this gets wiped when you wipe your phone.
I hade the exact same problems so i went to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Dialer and wiped the date, after that i had to enter my SIM-pin code and the problems was solved!

[Q] Mobile Data Connection Issue

Hi,
I am not sure if this thread already exists but I am a bit caught up with this issue with my HTC One X(Arabic Version)
For the past One month I have been facing the issue initially I thought it was due to my old SIM card so I replaced it & still the issue exists.
What happens is that even when the signal bars are full and seems to be connected to the network I am not able to make phone calls, send Text messages or use the Mobile Data in short no network usage.
This usually happens when I am using the Mobile Data when suddenly it stops functioning but I dont get notified as the Network bars are still good enough.
The only way to get the network back is by restarting the Device.
I am using a Custom ROM.
Will going back to Stock help or this is a Hardware Issue???
A prompt reply will be really appreciated as the loss of network is causing delays in my daily works..
Thanks in Advance!!!
tweeted to @HTC
I sent a tweet to @HTC and they advised me to try the actions mentioned on this page: https://support.htc.com/?title=en-us/HTC_Thunderbolt_Verizon_Wireless/News_%26_Downloads/Troubleshooting_Common_Issues_After_HTC_ThunderBolt%E2%84%A2_Ice_Cream_Sandwich_(ICS)_Update_|_4.2.13
It's not for the One X but the process is the same.
I gave it a try but I can't really tell yet..
If anyone cares, here's the twitter conversation: https://twitter.com/M_Possamai/status/377385531031949312
I doubt it'll work but maybe it will for one or two people.
It doesn't hurt anything anyway.
