I have a Galaxy Nexus on order from Verizon - should get it tomorrow - and had a
a question.
I have been using this app - android-wifi-tether
to get wireless tethering on my Droid 2 Global and Verizon has never tried to charge me for it.
I read on another forum that ICS may have flags for un-authorised tethering so the phone companies can tell easier.
Is there any truth to this ? Is there anymore chance of getting caught tethering using the Nexus than my Droid 2 Global ?
I dont tether that often - only in power outages and where there is no wifi.
Thanks,
Brett
Should be in Q&A!
I have been using that app, WiFi tether for over a month now with my GN and for years on my other phones. No problems. You will be fine.
Should be but to answer,
There are ways around this. Custom roms have the Verizon meat hooks ripped out and allow typical wifi tethering. Using the stock rom, they can monitor it and will cut you off.

I wonder how aggressive they are with this ?
I have been tethering for over a year intermittently
on my droid 2 global and they havent charged me yet.
That phone is rooted but with stock rom and kernal.
I am sure the amount of data I have used while tethered
is very low - may have been beneath their radar/care level.

Yeah its hard to say... everyone has different experience. The only sure-fire way to know you're "undetected" (as much as you can be) is to be running a completely custom ROM.
Lots of people report just using a root app works also. Other people have been reporting that using the built-in tethering options work, but I wouldn't trust that.
Verizon has never really been known to go after tethering customers, but I've been using custom ROM for months and they haven't said anything
I have been lurking around these forums for a long time now, and I have NEVER once seen the thread or post that says, "I got caught tethering using WiFi Tether". I have on several occasion, on threads just like this one, asked anyone to point me towards that post or thread, so far NOT ONE PERSON has been able to point me to that post/thread. So again I will ask: Can somebody please show me one post or thread of a user getting caught tethering with WiFi Tether!?

If you want an even older build that what Zepius suggested, you can always look at oldblue910's website: http://www.randomphantasmagoria.com
I'm sorry if this is too off topic. But I don't know what thread to place the question on.
I was told by a Verizon rep (taking his words with large grains of salt) that they have had more Nexus's returned than any other recent device. Its plagued with issues. And a few of them are 4G connectivity issues. Where it will be always connecting and disconnecting from 4G many times a day, even in a fully covered area. The GPS does power cycling all the time using much more battery than necessary. And horrible battery, buggy interface are just a few he mentioned to me.
Are these issues just a Verizon rep trying to push me away from a open and rootable device? Or are they real? And if so, are they only with the Stock Nexus ROM, and most if not all are fixed after flashing one of the many Custom ROMs available? What are some of the most common issues with the Verizon LTE version of the Galaxy Nexus? Both before and flashing a Custom ROM.
Thank you guys for any help, and God Bless

This is my 3rd Galaxy Nexus. The first had a software issue. The second one, which was a new device, stopped charging while the phone was on. Replaced the battery and the phone still wouldnt hold a charge. This one is a refurbished replacement phone and since I've rooted it and installed Jelly Bean, I can only use the phone on speaker, wired headset, and bluetooth. I took the second phone to the Verizon dealer and the sales rep said his Nexus was starting to exhibit the same thing my phone started to do.

Have you ever tried a ICS ROM? One that has had much work done with it and has been labeled fully stable and released? Jelly Bean ROMs seem to all be in fairly early stages. So its really hard to know if the issues were with the ROM or with the phone.
Can any one confirm @llenroht 's list of issues? And are these fairly common, even when using a ISC Custom ROM?
Alright. After 2 very long days of researching this issue and trying various fixes, I am at a loss. Really hoping someone here has a working solution.
So I've been using WiFi Tether (3.3beta2 most recent working version) as long as I can remember now. I've got an E970 on AT&T with unlimited data. Just to clear the air, I use about 25 to 30 GB per month (tethered and un-, combined), and I've never gotten a warning text/call/threat from my carrier.
I have also been using Nocturnal Limited Edition 1.0 since about the 2nd or 3rd day after purchasing my phone. Therein lies the beginning of my woes; not the rom itself, but the fact that I was bored a few days ago and realized there have been many updates since December 2012. So naturally I decided to update, and it's truly a thing of beauty. Just the one problem; at some point the base was updated to 4.1.2 and now WiFi Tether no longer works.
I considered posting this cry for help in the rom thread, but after much research on this issue, it's my understanding that WiFi Tether has broken for many people on many devices and various roms after updating to 4.1.2 and higher.
So far I have tried all available versions of the app, including the latest experimental build, as well as TrevE's mod. Each with a plethora of settings and each time without success. I've also attempted the entitlement check modification without success, after verifying the change remained post-reboot.
I don't think I've left any critical information out. That just about sums up my current situation. As a last resort I'm willing to downgrade back to what I had before (4.0.x), if that's even possible. When I'm home, my tether extends to a nano router with WISP which then feeds into another.. well.. it feeds the whole house with delicious 4G LTE. Any and all assistance with this issue will be greatly appreciated.

Can We discuss how the wi-fi calling works, and if it is possible to put that portion of the software into a custom rom like CM? Im not a developer but i would love to be a test monkey and do what i can. Im assuming the wi-fi feature is not an apk and is deeper than that ?
Wifi calling isn't brand new in the Note 3. And it's never, across all iterations, been ported to an AOSP rom. It's not going to happen. But, at least you made a thread in the development section asking for something obviously widely wanted to happen. Maybe this is the spark needed.

i have asked around and not been able to find a rom with it enabled.. and i dont understand why not. its a GREAT feature.. practically the only reason i went t-mobile.. im willign to dig in my phone and find what I need if someone will direct me. Im not completely technically illeterate but not a code writer either.
well.. i guess Jedi has it so that might be the best choice for now..
In the sensation and nexus 4 threads, we tried everything. Im guessing its still nearly impossible.

It's baked within the framework of the system. If you do a search you'll find threads here where people have worked on this and gotten almost nowhere. I believe there's also a bounty thread somewhere to get this to happen. I think that was in the nexus 4 area.

The N4 never came with it in any form. Since the note comes with it at least in touchwiz, in theory there may be hope.

I read on the at&t note 1 that wifi calling is build into the framework.
The only way I was able to get wifi calling on the I717 is flashed a t mobile stock yo it
@ OP - I hear that. That would open a much needed can of worms. My guess is it has something to do with One or all three of the circled jar files. I am also no code writer but would also be willing to test this out.
Edit: "don't have permission to attach pictures" under /system/framework, the files I am referring to are...
TmoWfcUtils.jar
voip-commo.jar
telephony.jar
This is only a suggestive starting point if someone does take this on. I really don't know if it would be possible, as it may be patented by t mobile, and that could be why it hasn't been done already...?

lots of other phones have come with it and gotten no where, I'm actually really confident this will never happen without a change from T-mobile side.
and believe me..I desperately want it, I have to use wifi calling most of the day, would love some aosp rom fun too
trust me...if I could do this it would already been done...I am speaking for all of the devs also...
I use wifi calling, in the rare times I do TALK on my phone. Imagine that. Haha.
Anyways, I will probably run a similar setup on my GN3 when I receive it. On my GN2, I have been running stock deodexed, rooted, rom with NOVA Launcher. No complaints. Having the setup I really had no need to switch to anything else. I have, in the past, flashed many roms on previous phones, trying to find "the one" best rom.
I could probably do without wifi calling, but I use my s-pen all the time.
That is STRICTLY a TMO feature, and CAN NOT be implemented into ANY other rom other than the tmo official releases, if this could have been done, it would have been accomplished at least back to the G3 days....they still have not figured that one out yet.
I started using this site when rooting my Droid I. I have since had a GS 2, GS 3, Droid Razr, now HTC One M8 (all Verizon), all with custom roms. I have almost no posts because I have spent hours on top of hours reading threads... I have come to the end of my rope on this one and need to actually post a question.
On all of the custom roms I have installed, WiFi tethering has been built in. I am not sure what the technical jargon is, but I mean that the tethering had no effect on my bill. I have unlimited data so I use a lot of data. I have recently flashed my HTC One M8 with ViperOne after many hours of reading. To my disappointment when I launched the HotSpot app I got a warning saying that I needed Verizons service to use it. This has never happened with previous roms on other devices. I looked at InsertCoin and Revolution HD and both seem to be set up the same as ViperOne in that I must use Verizon's service. Does the Cynogenmod rom also need this, it looked like no? Anyhow, I am looking for a rom that does not require the Verizon Hotspot service. I have also tried the WiFi Tether that has been mentioned in several threads, but it does not work for me. I have used 3rd party apps in the past and they never seem to work as smooth as the built in tethering. I am not trying to bash the current roms, each of them are light years beyond what a rom built by me would look like. This site and the outstanding Android devs on it are the reason I am not an iPhone user.

I have answered my own question. I installed the CM Nightly rom and the AP works fine.
I haven't had any luck in figuring out an solution to an issue. Maybe someone may have a suggestion to try.
Basically, I'm having an issue with the phone not waking up (coming out of standby). It'll be
I'm running a stock deoxidized rooted (and I think deknoxed because I'm not finding any knox files, but just one directory) NE2 (Android 4.4) rom. The rom is pretty stable with an occasional ramdon reboot.
The problem seems to be tied to WiFi Tether Router. Nice application. The issue only occurs when running this application. It worse when running another application at the same time, which in my case is SiriusXM. From their FAQ section (linky, it looks like it could be an issue of the phone going into some kind power saving management mode. I do not have Power Save mode on. My other guess is there could be a memory leak, but it's beyond my knowledge how to determine if true or not. Although, I do think it's most likely a power management issue because I've other apps stop functioning when in standbye. Sometimes it'll wake up right away hitting the home or power button. Other times, I need to pull or plug a charger to trigger the wake up. Other times, it can take up to 15 minutes. At worse, I have to do a battery pull.
I was thinking maybe I could change the kernel, but don't know of any kernels that are compatible with the stock NE rom. Ultimately, I was to try to change the governor to performance or increase the clock speed. But I think this may not be feasible because, if memory serves me well, those functions need to be build into the kernel.
I would try maybe going ASOP, but I do use a few things that, as far as I know, aren't possible with with them such as screen mirroring. I also don't like some of the have GPS lock issues; I had when I tried an ASOP I had this and a bigger issue. So it's more I don't think it'll meet my needs and wants.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Try out chaz'es stock rom. I've been using it for 2 weeks no reboots. There is a hot spot mod that you can flash also no app needed.

Thanks for the reply. I tried the hotspot mod on 4.3 and tried it once, and it Sprint noticed. Maybe it was the rom or a bad flash. Just quirky.

I"ve used Hotspot mods in the past, so it's not that I'm against them by any means. Just a bit sketchy at the moment. The time I spoke, Sprint sent me a text and a letter about TOS violation. And it wasn't that long ago, so just being a bit careful that's all.
Plus, the last time, I'm not sure if it was the mod, the rom, mod download, or bad flash. Personally, I think it may have been the rom and rom flash. The 4.3 stock rom I used wasn't very stable. A lot of reboots.
With my situtation, I just thinking if I can get the phone not to go into whatever standby or powersave mode when the displays shuts off, would be best. Right now, I'm just not having the display go off, which I really don't like. But I know quite a bit development on the this variant of the GN2 is limited and becoming and less and less everyday. I know others keep more up this stuff than me, thus is why I asked.
As annoying as it may be, I can deal with a little while till my contract ends, which is very soon. Than it's just waiting for the GN4 to release and see what it has, compared to other similar phablets, and the WiFi hotspot to be hacked.

Well try a ne2 (4.4.2) rom. Chaz's almost stock rom or my Community 3.2/3.2+ rom and things will be much better as far as usability. Mk4 (4.3) was a garbage release from Samsung. All Samsung devices have issues with 4.3 which is why so many got the 4.4.2 update.
Now about the hotspot. Well I would just stay away from that if I were you. As sprint said it is a TOS violation unless you pay extra for the service.

I'm currently on a stock deoxidized NE2 (4.4.2) ROM. In fact, it may be the same one your referred to by Chaz. I read 4.3 is a mix bad of good and terrible. I waited as long as I could before going to 4.3. If I wasn't having an issue the NHL Center Ice app, I would still be on 4.1.2. 4.3 was always rebooting. I think it had memory leaks.
Right now, the dealing the screen thing is more slightly annoying and inconvenient. It's an issue known by the WiFi Tether Router developer. Even if there was a kernel I could use to do what I want, doesn't necessarily mean my issue would be resolved, since I'm slightly guessing what the problem is.
My thinking too on the hotspot mod. I use way too much data to end up using another mobile service provider. The sent a text saying there was an issue. I had to call Sprint to find out what it was. Since I called and got the letter, I figure I don't have much leeway right now.
