[Q] GPS fix problem in Cyanogen 7.1 - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello seems that a lot of people have this problem in 7.1 release. I read a lot about how to fix it but nothing works on my DHD, Should I downgrade to the previous stable release of Cyanogen? Can someone recommend a rom that is good out of the box? Thanks

The GPS problem usually happens when the ROM is not properly flashed or flashed without Wiping data properly, You can use FasterFix and GPS status aps from market to test and see if you get any GPS signal.
I'm using RCmiX 4.0 Gingerbread 2.35 with sense 3.5, the GPS lock works good in this, previously I was using ARHD 6.3.1 This rom was locking GPS under 5 seconds for me [ When I was outside and there was a clear sky view ].
If you are going for any of these two above ROM make sure you Wipe data properly / Factory Data Reset.

Maybe the antenna contacts are oxidized (another very common DHD issue).

I never managed to get a good gps signal on cm 7, or a good (non-grainy) camera. I use it daily when running, keeping track by cardiotrainer. Tried everything i could find. Switched to ARHD; problem solved. I hope it will be fixed some time, i liked cm.

Yeah the gps is a problem with cm7. You can usually use faster fix, gps status and gps fix to get a lock, but then if you are using it for navigation or similar gps tracking apps, the lock is lost after a few minutes.
The solution is to quickly switch the gps on and off whilst in the application that requires the lock and after having gained a lock, and then it should stay locked for the duration of your journey or whatever you are using it for.

Gingervillain GPS problem

Hi,
I am having trouble with GPS on my desire since installing gingervillain. On both versions 1.4 and 1.5 GPS just doesn't seem to be working at all. I've tried a factory reset from the recovery menu and have tried re-applying the zip file but with no luck. GPS is enabled but I don't even get an icon on the status bar at the top when it is supposed to be searching for a signal.
Thanks,
Chris
Reach for the skies
Go outside of your house. Point your phone to the sky. Your position should should showing on your GPS.
Or it could be the program itself? Try different gps using apps like maps, facebook places etc etc.
Also do post what radio you're currently using on your phone. It could help people diagnose your problem better.
Tried outside and using gpstest off the market with no luck. I don't usually have any problem with gps inside my house anyway. I don't even get an icon in the status bar at the top it's like it's not working at all. And before anyone says yes it is switched on! My current version is:
32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Any help would be much appreciated!

You must have the worlds strongest GPS in your desire. In normal ones, you need to be outside with the phone pretty much able to see the sky. On top of that, ideally it will need to be a clear sky.
Turn on GPS, open up Google Maps / your Navigation software (while outside). On my phone it only used to show the GPS icon in the task bar when a program was running that could use it.
Alternatively download GPS tools from the market (I forget the exact name).
If your GPS is indeed stuffed, take your phone back (if its under warrantee).
My GPS died on my phone. Completely. And before that it kept rebooting the phone. Had to take it back.

Try gps status on the market
Same here too
Hi
very interested in this thread as my GPS worked fine until I installed Gingervillain 1.4 last week and then updating to 1.5 on Friday
Radio : 32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14
I downgraded to GV 1.0 and my GPS was working ok again. I heard there was a known GPS problem fixed in GV 1.6 so I upgraded but the problem returned unfortunately. Any ideas?
Update the kernel with Villain set up, it cured my GPS problem.
GVChangelog:
Version 1.6:
* Fixed GPS problem (Thanks to CM Team)
+ kernel update defo works.

Hi,
Could you advise how I go about that? I thought the Kernel was updated as part of the gingervillain setup anyway?
Well I've had more fun with this! I just couldn't get GPS working on anything other than GV 1.0. I completely wiped my SD card and re-formatted the EXT3 partition. I then installed the stock RUU at which point GPS was predictably working. I then went through the flashing process of GV 1.6 and GPS was working this time. It was fine for a week or so but then the GPS stopped working again! I'm thinking it must be something to do with the dalvik cache now, that's the only reason I can think of for the GPS to stop working. I'm running out of patience with GV now so does anyone have suggestions for another stable 2.3 ROM I can move onto?
Thanks again,
Chris

GPS waiting for location

When using GPS it always says waiting for location no matter where I am..but on my zte blade its almost instant.
This happened on reduce rom, and now on cm7.
Please help as I need GPS alot

GPS is buggy in those 2.3 GB ROMs.
However one of them has it working fully (Gingervillain or latest Redux, I think).
But if you use it a lot stick with 2.2 ROMs.
Try another Radio or Kernel
tried all suggested but no luck.
Which CM7 build are you using? I had this problem with CM7 RC1 and RC2 but after I switched to RC3, GPS started to work.
GPS could be faulty. Flash the stock RUU, test again, and take it back if it still doesn't work.
Had this a couple of times before. I used fast reboot from the market to stop and start apps and processes worked a treat for me.
Make sure you disable GPS before you run the app. Hope it helps.
The thing is, that the GPS works fine when i get a GPS lock/fix.
But it takes so long to connect e.g 1-5mins.
My ZTE Blade has an instant 3-10sec lock every time.

Whats your GPS status?

there have been pletny of GPS threads, obviously. but im wondering what you guys did to fix yout GPS on cm7? my gps worked in the past, but recently when i flashed RC4, the GPS stopped working. and i flashed the latest nightly and it is not working as well. i just baffles me because it worked in earlier builds, and you would figure it would work in more stable builds.
so.
what have you guys done to fix your GPS/what nightly are you on?
As an avid Foursquare user I use GPS every day, several times a day, these GPS issues are the main reason I'm still on the stock ROM.
i know what you mean. my GPS works on sense based roms, which is great. im not sure whyyyy its not working on CM7.

First things first: No indicator on notification bar when starting GPS traffic assist application?
Then you are living under a rock or having bad reception. Go outside. Using some kind of widget which uses GPS also and has a on/off switch in it? Try switching off and reboot. It simply should work with the latest nightlies. Try reflashing and fix permissions. Do not wipe your entire phone before flashing.
Doesn't work for me either with RC 2 or RC 4. I've tried some of the fixes out but no joy. I know how to use it and it works fine when I go back to stock. Issue is definitely with my CM 7 install. I'm hoping for a solution soon as this my only issue, but it's a big one for me.

I don't use the navigation much but if I understand the program gpsstatus, it is working for me. I have used CM7 RC2 and RC4 (which is what I am on).

That's right, yours is working fine. If the GPS is "broken", you won't have any activity on GPS Status. No green dots for the satellites on the round display, and no bars on the bar graph below that. Those will be blank, and you never get lat/long coordinates
It's still working for me on RC4, but locking takes about a minute, whereas it was almost instant on stock.
CM7 definitely does something to gps, very weird how everyone is getting different results.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2
had problems with gps locking on stock radio with cm 6.1.1 after flashing .27 i get almost instant lock in the house, that did not happen with stock rom or radio.
but my wifes with stock radio and rom did that from the box
both g2
GPS doesn't work at all for me in CM7-RC4 (I mean nothing, no signals or indicators or anything). Works fine in CM6.
I believe I'm currently running the "stock" T-mo OTA radio 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M and haven't tried a different one. Think changing that might help? I don't understand why some people have it working with this radio but not others.
Edit:
OK, I got it working. I had first installed CM7-RC4 using clockwork recovery (in the boot menu) after wiping out the stock ROM. GPS didn't work so I installed CM6 using ROM manager. GPS worked. I then installed CM7-RC4 using ROM manager and voilĂ , GPS works in CM7-RC4 now. I have no idea what the difference is.
Try .27 worked for me on cm 611 , just flashed the new one, works great, satellites get higher value on GPS test

Sorry, didn't see your post after mine. I edited mine to show that I got it working simply by downgrading to CM6 then upgrading to CM7. Could be a ROM Manager thing or maybe something left over from how CM6 configured the hardware, or who knows.
I do wish CM7 was more stable though, seems kind of wonky.
I had the same problem with CM7. Download gps.vision.so from either nightly #4 or nightly #34. Open up adb:
adb remount
adb push gps.vision.so /system/lib/hw
adb reboot
GPS should work after that.
Radio .26, CM7 RC4, flashed also the "auto-patcher" that patches files to your ROM based on what radio you have.

[Q] GPS problem

Hello, I have a gps problem. I installed RunnyDroid 5. I have this radio:12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M
can someone help me troubleshoot my gps problem. I can not get a gps fix at all...
Should I change the radio???
Try installing/configuring FasterFix first. My DHD took absolutely forever to lock on and some days not at all until I installed it.
If the problem persists then yeah I would suggest trying a newer radio.
My gps stops working every couple of weeks, I then use gps status & toolbox to clear and redownload A-GPS data. After that it works fine again.
GPS status & toolbox does help.
It can download latest almanac and ephemeris data to help fixing faster.
Or try using GPS in a good condition where there is no tall buildings or trees. Once you successfully locked GPS for one time, it would be MUCH FASTER to lock again even in worse condition.
Sometimes (when even gps-status isn't working) it helps to clear A-gps data, reboot, clear it again and then redownload A-gps data.

Yet another uncommon GPS problem

Okay, this seems just another common GPS problem with a DHD. But I find it intriguing.
It happens to me since I bought the phone, second hand.
I've already made the mod to the antena (soldered wire) and use the AGPS Patch and FasterFix to choose the server. Nothing solved it.
So, when the GPS works, it works really fine, no abnormal signal loss, not too much lag.
Note that it only works fine when I turn data ON, so it can download agps info.
There comes a day when I turn data on, go outside, turn Sygic on (or other gps program), and no satellites at all. GPS Status indicates the same.
I can go for more than 15 minutes without gps fix. It can go for longer, but I don't have the patience. I reset the AGPS info with GPS Status and download a fresh one and the problem remains.
If I restart the phone, 99% of the times, it solves the problem.
Now, I found out that a program called Quick Reboot (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...Glub3NvZnQuYW5kcm9pZC5RdWlja1JlYm9vdEZyZWUiXQ) avoids me having to restart the phone. Plus, GPS Doctor is quite efficient too.
So, I have to run Quick Reboot, then GPS Doctor, then Sygic or other Nav Program. Not very handy, if you're already driving...
Now, what on earth is this?
Hardware seems fine, because it doesn't fail, for example in a 300 km trip. If it gets a fix, it stays on nicely.
It sounds a software problem, deep in the OS itself.
I'm on Android 2.3.7, CM 7.2, but tested this on various CM based roms, ICS, rooted OEM ROM and it behaves the same.
If anyone can help... or share experiences... Any devs?
Thanks
I dont think it is going to get any better than that. I have the same experience as well with ICS ROMs. However, some ROM's dont do it so often.
i have same issue on default rooted rom wwe3.12.405.1.....
it may be problem with some specific models or all od dhd series
and its very random and happens on trips mostly
agps /wifi/mobile data nothing fixes it
restart fixs issue instantly ...
once after restart gps gets fixed it works perfectly ...
I have this exact same problem, and I'll try your tip for using the Quick Reboot app.
I'd also recommend the app AGPS Injector which enables you to start GPS based apps e.g. navigation etc. 'via' AGPS injector. It automatically downloads AGPS info before starting the navigation app. You can even create homescreen shortcuts for navigator apps which do it all with one click. Perfect!
I'm going to try combining this with a Quick Reboot using Tasker, again so that it does it all with just one click. I'll report back if it works.
Yep, automated steps would be great, like:
auto data on / agps injector / auto data off / run gps program
or even
Run Quick Reboot / quit Quick Reboot / auto data on / agps injector / auto data off / run gps program
:silly:
Just got a total GPS blackout an hour ago, and the combination Quick Reboot + AGPS injector (bought the full version) didn't worked for me, despite 5 or 6 atempts.
Then gave up and just went for a try with Quick Reboot + GPS Doctor and got it working without rebooting. :good:
Sounds like I need to try GPS Doctor. I've had good success with AGPS Injector. For me, I spent ages trying to find an app which gave the same results as using the AGPS reset and download in GPS Test, and that did it. Maybe there's some regional variation.
Do those apps just force a download of the links in the gps.conf file?
Have created setups using Tasker which I'll try tomorrow. Also found the app Fast Reboot which does a similar thing to Quick Reboot, so I'll compare the two.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda app-developers app
Yes, could be a regional variation.
Don't really know what the AGPS info download does.
I've used that Fast Reboot Pro program, but didn't do the trick for me.
