Here is a tip on how to increase battery life by at least 50%. For me, it has increased by 83%, given that my S II is relatively new (3 months old). It is an app in the market which you can get for free: JuiceDefender
MUST:
Remove any task killing apps (Advanced Task Killer) otherwise this app is useless as it needs to be on at all times.
I have my settings set to Aggressive, as I don't use my phone much during the day.
My normal on the Bombaridier v3.5 ROM by TricH was 100% at 7:00 AM and 88% at 10:23 AM with only 40 minutes of music and standby with no data connection or Wi-Fi. With JuiceDefender, I get 100% at 7:00 AM and 98% at 10:23 AM with the same circumstances of use. It is worth downloading and will extend battery life. I have 83% more battery life according to my math (which is (10/12)=(x/100)) and it is amazing.
I agree that JuiceDefender is an excellent product for extending battery life.
I have the "Ultimate" version.
JuiceDefender alongside "Battery Monitor Widget Pro" is the killer combination...
I did notice one slight bug with JuiceDefender (JD) - there's a known issue with wifi management. Phone turns itself off occasionally. The fix is to simply set JD "disabled" for WiFi management - problem then goes away.
I also listen to music (Pandora) over a Bluetooth headset (about 3 hours per day).
I regularly get about 18hrs+ (combination, on average: 3 hours on voice, lots of email). Stock, rooted ROM... bloat removed.
I agree Juice defender is purely amazing, according to JD stats, I get 1.83% more battery life, that's with aggressive settings.
Ps: Thanks for the Wifi tip
It'll be hard pressed for any app to extend my 3+ days of usage on a single charge. Just sayin..
I just bought the ultimate. I will let everyone know how it goes after a week of using it.

The first thing that came to mind is; haters gotta hate.
I use it just fine with my purposes.
Check/write emails, make calls. Nifty info widgets for updates. I just don't use it for everything because that's just silly. That's the reason why I get such a long run-time. I already have a dedicated media device, no need to watch videos, etc etc on the phone.
Just because most people don't get more than a day usage, don't mean it doesn't happen.

whoa 18+ with 3hours voice is killer.
i barely get about 16 with 2.5 voice and roughly 2.5 display on time
just fyi to those who don't know. voice weighs heaviest on battery usage, even more so than display.
I can get 2 days with moderate use but I dont realy tLk on the phone and I use wifi most of the time

on a side note, has anyone tried to undervolt and underclock? if so, which is the best program for this? i am using setcpu but doesn't seem to allow voltage tweaks. with JD and undervolting, i can only imagine what type of battery life this would have

Best thing you can do to to increase battery life is to disable all those Google services. I don't know why but I make it pretty clear in the settings that I do not want any auto-update or syncing of any sort but it happens anyway, so I have to manually freeze all the **** that Google insists on running 24/7.
Thanks for the tip! Extra battery life is always welcome.
Although jd isn't exactly new, but there seems to be a lot of people who just heard of it now. Not bashing but this just shows that there seems to be a lot of new android users or well xda members since the release of our awesome device. I bet most are all former ifags (don't take me seriously).

Lmao. I think this made my day. xD I was using juice defender way back when the droid eris was new and I still do! It works wonders. When I had a dell streak I went from 6-8 hrs of batt life with no usage to over 2 days.
Sorry if I sound like a tool for asking this but if you turn off the Google gmail and calender sync then how do you get your emails?
U have to manually check for mail all the time?
sorry, having issues with my battery also. I use Juice Defender but the free version - everyone that is having success with it are you using the purchase one, Juice Defender Ultimate?
Ive had my phone since october, and the battery has gotten better and better. And im not doing anything special, stock rom, no juice defender, no task killer, nothing of that sort.
I use wifi tether almost all day at work(about 6 to 8 hours) and I still have 20 to 30 percent left when i head home.

I've tried all the hottest kernels and battery saving tricks and still average only 8hrs under real world use
Running Evo Deck 1.2.1, display at 12%, couple widgets, data off (using wifi at home) , sync off, and all of that. Underclocked, undervolted too.
Browsing, xda app, etc results in 20% battery usage per hour. Battery consumption is zero at idle, but drops like a rock if i use the phone at all.

Battery calibration is very important, don't know how I lived without it
Setting the VM heap to 48 allows the dalvik garbage collector to run less, improving battery
Chainfire 3d helps with anything graphical, makes home using lwps smoother, games run better etc, also saves battery by making all animations, graphics processing more efficient
If you use apps2sd bumping the cache makes it faster, and more efficient saving battery
Also updating to the latest radios etc, and making sure your prls and profile is up to date is essential, many aosp users, formerly including my self forget about that stuff
I've spent a huge amount of time expirementing with different setups, I think I've found my phones sweet spot
I have loads of friends with rooted evos, mine has the best battery and is typically fastest (chainfire 3d) makes everything snappier
Maybe with all of this info you can test these apps / settings and find your phones sweet spot. Good luck man

I'll agree with Zac here,
evo 3d with CM7 nightly, SavagedZen 2.2.1 CFS. removed all the crap i dont use or think they suck the battery down. live wallpaper etc.
InteractiveX governor, 245-1113mhz
No setCPU.
no juice defender
no taskkiller.
no 4g - no gps - no wifi
blutooth ON
3g always ON.
battery calibrated is a must
display set to manual around 33% brightness. but i change it on the fly (swipe the notif bar).
Now the results are pretty interesting here:
With the stock battery and all the above; if the reception is good, i can go for 2 days with moderate usage. yes i know i night i sleep, so it idles nicely.
If the signal is not so good, it will destroy the battery, and can't really get anything more than 13hours.
My typical use:
unplug at 10am.
use the phone normally.
plug it back in at midnight that night, and i would have between 35% or up to 67% battery left in the phone, depending on the factors mentioned.
Which to me, going all day is all i wanted before i started tweaking. Mission accomplished.
The quality of the reception is a killer, i'll tell you.
I bought a 3500mah battery from the same company, and it is trash.
are there any extended batteries that fit in an otterbox commuter case?
It feels like my phone can't last much more than a day.
Am I expecting too much juice from my phone or is this the normal amount it should be at?
Generally speaking for me I only last about 12 hours unplugged. Even when not in use on idle, i seem to lose 1% every 10-20min or so.
Someone please shed some light based on these battery screenshots and tell me if its normal or not.
Your biggest wakelock is audio out. Turn off keyboard sounds and screen touch sounds and lock sounds. Now your phone can sleep better.

You seem to have fairly frequent screen-on usage paired with frequent intervals of GPS usage (see battery graph).
Are you using GPS that frequently? If not, id investigate on why your GPS is being utilized so frequently.
I'd say based on your usage, your battery life is fairly normal.
Two hour screen time... That sounds about normal to go from full to dead. You're lucky the phone made it 12 hours. Many people get a lot less.

with wifi on the whole time, that should help the battery last longer. I'm on LTE version and my battery life is similar to yours, but on 4G.
Based on your info, I would guess that you can improve it by turning off some things going on in the background. Widgets, weather, screen brightness, anything else using lots of background data or ram?
Sleeping with 4G, sync, and GPS all on I lose 1-2% per hour. But that's with no background apps other than stock OS stuff + AVG. I normally get 2.5 hrs screen time 100%-0% on 4G over a 12 hour period.
Well there's half the problem right there, facebook, it's refreshing for updates all the time.. also, underclock your phone so the max is 920MHz might save some, unless you wanna do some gaming or something it doesn't matter. Audioout seems to cause a lot of wake time for all android phones.. seen it in the epic 4g forums. But yessiree Bob.

Normal for a lot of people. Just look at all the poor battery threads. I get 2:30h with my gsm GN running Wifi and very minimal apps which sync. My browser is inverted and my screen brightness is low.
I get good standby time, but that doesn't really comfort me as I have a powerful phone I can't actually USE.
You will hear people say they get great battery life or they are fine with 2h screen time, but I just think they don't want to admit that a $700 phone in 2012 should have better life than this.
If you ask for advice, people will tell you to stop complaining and / or get a new phone. Don't reply to them or an XDA mod will threaten to ban you. Happened to me.

With standard battery and stock ROM this phone can only give 2.5 - 3 hours screen time, which is unacceptable IMO in this day and age.
Turn GPS off, turn wifi off, don't use this app, only use that app, turn sounds off, don't increase the brightness, limit the cpu etc etc... So why did I buy a smartphone that I can't use then?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I have owned more android phones than I can count, and tried more ROMs and Kernels than you can imagine. Countless times I have seem claims of improved battery life, and until recently nothing made a noticeable difference short of not turning on the phone. I am running the latest GummyNex Rom with the Franco Kernel 15.2 and it is shocking. I have verified the last two nights by leaving phone off the charger. Night #1 -8 hours 30 minutes phone sat while I slept, on 4g GPS enabled, and used 8% battery. Last Night 8:15 phone sat, same conditions only 7% battery usage. I am using the "Franco Turtle" governor and notice not performance degradation and only incredible battery life. Very impressive
I've seen so many threads here and at The Verge that I just don't understand. I've been using Android devices now for about two years and I've NEVER had a problem with battery life being worse than my iPhones. I have a 3GS and the battery on it dies after about 8-10 hours of moderate use. Meanwhile, I'm at 12 hours on my SGS3 and 50% battery. I also have quite a lot of applications running in the background. Granted, today I have been low usage, but yesterday I was on the phone for hours and I still went 12 hours before the battery icon turned yellow. I haven't HAD to recharge before 12 hours for ages, even my Atrix went longer than that. I even have a screenshot from a few days ago where I went 14 hours and only dropped to 63%.
Are people just nuts or what is going on here?
People expect to play games at max brightness for hours and still get 12 hours battery life.
In with you, I use my phone constantly through out the day, I run my business from my phone, and routinely get 14+ hours per charge no problem. I just made a few tweaks, nothing big, and I'm good to go. This phone lasts noticeably longer than all my previous iPhones 3,3g and 4. Plus it charges twice as fast as those and never over heats... all my iPhones would get so hot that I couldn't charge them in the car with out testing then in an ac vent, and that's just from half an hour to an hour of talking... sgs3, I can talk for hours with no overheating, and it charges like a boss.

Neither one of my galaxy phones overheated to where they shut off until one decided it was dirty and jumped in the washer(rip 1st sgs2) .
I had changed my iPhone 4 back glass to one of those metal backs. Now when its on charge it will almost burn your hand if ur holding it. And I have had it shut off while on Facebook. Battery never last very long on I phones if the brightness is up data going WiFi seeking and jbing.

I think some phones came with defective batteries. I'm running juice defender and could easily make it through a 16 hour day. 3-4 hours of screen time was not uncommon. 3 months later, and I can barely get 10 hours of use and 1.5 hours of screen time. Time to get a new battery!

I am not sure what is going on. I don't have the best battery life I can get 10 to 12 hours moderate use. Steaming music, reading rss feeds, checking email, 2 to 3 hours screen on. I would easily last a day on my iPhone 4. I have juice defender, lowest screen setting, custom kernel with under volting. I think it has something to do with my area. Att is so congested in my area I am barely able to use data sometimes. It's better with lte but still an issue at times.

People use their phones differently. Just saying.
If I don't turn the screen on, with LTE data, my phone dies in 9 hours (I tested it). And this doesn't mean there's a problem with it. I have around 15 different push notification apps running in the background, all of which are using data almost continuously. I don't think I can expect it to last much longer. And if I know I'm not going to be near a power source for longer than that, I simply turn off syncing to get better battery life.
To me, it looks like the LTE radio is the biggest battery hog. Let's see if the iPhone 5 can somehow get around this problem so that other manufacturers can take note

I was going to mention this. I noticed a significant improvement in battery life once I used JuiceDefender to turn off data while my screen is off. 4G LTE is the main culprit of most of the complaints for battery life (in addition to brightness). That is going to be a big problem for the new iphone if they can't get the battery management for 4G correct. It has taken Samsung a couple of years to get the battery working decent with 4G. I have my doubts that Apple could top them the first year running LTE on the iphone. Who knows, maybe that will be the "new" feature they have been working on over the year, LTE power management. That's the direction Motorola has headed in their new RAZOR MAXX devices. We'll see, either way, the consumer comes out on top as we have more competition to drive down prices and receive better products each year.
Best battery life for SGS3
With AMOLED and Android u gotta take special measures to get good battery life:
- kill bloatware. NostalgiaTurboSlim script will help. Or freeze unneeded apps - like Maps and enable them only when needed.
- disable various notifications - Play Market, WiFi etc
- disable ads - root and download AdAway app - they steal your mobile traffic, battery life and make you blind!
- put dark nonLive Wallpaper
- remove any widgets you don't use. I just removed all of them.
- disable animations and transitions
- disable haptic feedback
- disable touch tones/sounds/vibrations
- try using nonAuto brightness (I gave up on that - sunlight does not allow me to change anything manually)
- disable autorotation
- use dark Opera browser user.css
- use inverted or dark themed apps and Gapps, there is dark MMS, Twitter and Facebook in my ROM
- downclock CPU to 1GHz, or enable PowerSave On.
- use modern KToonsez kernel with PegasusQ governor, it downclocks CPU during screen off
- use CPU1 disabler script if your ROM/kernel supports it
- keep chargers around you, buy them at amazon
- buy spare OEM battery - I'm against aftermarket batteries, they are all fake rated
Or just buy latest iPhone 5 and enjoy.
Remember: Android is for tinkerers! That's why we love it! :victory:
Why do people still use some sort of battery management app life JuiceDefender or the like.
GET RID OF THEM NOW !(most of you that use it are probably coming over from an Iphone so you may be new but aren't well educated in how the Android OS works)
This phone comes with its own Task Manager as well as removing unwanted apps that are running in the background that you have previously used and don't need running.
So get rid of these dumb apps that don't do anything.

I have AMAZING battery life.
I have two........
; )
I bought a 3150 man battery on eBay for 10$. With data on WiFi on . My battery took 30h to be completely drain. 5-6h of the 30h was heavy use ( game, download, watching video)
I'm on cm10 with kt747 kernel OC to 2106mhz UC to 96mhz
Ktoonservative governor
Noop scheduler
All my frequencies are under volt of at least 100mv each
Try this!

I believe this is the software bug that can be fixed in one of the threads around here. It deals with the Cell Standby that drains the battery.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

I've read a lot of posts complaining about battery life, and other posts about users suggesting ways to improve battery life. I've read stuff like, disable LED, haptic feedback, lower volume, lower brightness, LTE turned off, underclocking, turning off sync, live wallpapers, etc, etc. To me a lot of people are crippling their phones. If your battery can last you 10 hours, that's enough because you'll probably be somewhere you can plug in. What's the point of being able to go for 20 hours when you'll probably have the opportunity to charge it before then? It's better to have and enjoy all the features.
Maybe somebody can chime in and give me their point of view.

I agree. I would never want to sacrifice a feature just to extend the phone's battery life. Instead I use a custom rom that has all the features (and more) and 12 to 18 hours of battery life.

Part of the issue is a sociological thinking pattern between wanting "more" and needing it. Depending upon the type of lifestyle you live, sometimes, battery life is of dire importance to have if you're constantly migrating around. But I agree, some people who aren't in that sort of disposition go overboard with it.
I just bought a bigger battery :good:
I agree wholeheartedly. If your battery is lasting you through your day (which mine does, and more) then why try to conserve it?
Yea its funny stuff people complain their battery only lasts 20 hrs but yet they want it to be able to do everything a computer can do and more....

The only conscious effort i made to extend my battery life was to undervolt the CPU a bit, but this was more for the lower temperature advantages with extra battery life being an added bonus. Beyond that i turned off things i dont use like BT, no need having something running that i have no use for. Overall i was happy with the stock battery except for any kind of heavy video or game usage which drains it pretty quick - solution : bigger F'n battery :highfive:
i agree that some people seem a bit obsessive about it. but we shouldn give bad battery life a pass either. hopefully we will see some sort of advancement in batteries to have better battery life while keeping them at a decent size.
i was kinda worried id have horrible battery life with the S3 being that its LTE. my last LTE phone was so bad it would die after 8 hours idle.

I keep the brightness to the lowest setting anyway, but I do all of this because I go to school fairly far from my home, and I'd like to be able to play games on my phone without wasting 5% battery every 15 minutes. I haven't switched power saving off since I bought the phone.
Stock ICS on my S3
I bought the extended battery because I like playing games from time to time and I don't want tl have to worry about my phone dropping 15% after playing something for 5 minutes. Like someone else said earlier. It really depends on the kind of lifestyle you live. I for one don't mind having the extended battery on my phone but I do miss how light it used to be.

How heavy is it? Does it fit in a case?
For me, and I want as much battery life as possible to avoid those situations where there is no way to charge you phone even if that only happens 1 a month or less.. As a parent I can't just let my phone die on me... I always need enough to be able to take or make that important calls/text. My goal is to have at least 20-30 hours of battery life per charge.
I think the only major feature I've given up is live wall paper. Other then that, it is just disabling other unused apps like gtalk, talkback, Google bookmarked sync. As well I've uv my phone as much as I can and run a 1350 max clock speed. I really don't see any major dip in performance as long as you do it right . I do use Tasker to disable syncing globally when the screen is off and make sure it automatically disable bluetooth after 10 mins once it disconnect. Also I have the Y5 app to automatically toggle wifi based off my network location. The most useful battery saver I've found is to set my wifi to only connect when the screen is on. Seems kind of backwards but it works well when very little data is process during idle rather the the phone requiring to keep a constant connection to wifi.

I'm also one of those people that closes an app as soon as I'm done with it. Use an app, press the home button, release and hold home, swipe the app away, sigh in relief. An old habit carried from my S2 Skyrocket, where getting 8 hours on stock was above average.

I have my screen brightness at 40-50 auto off.. i cant imagine turning it all the way down like alot of people say.. even when auto brightness is on it look very dull and dark at night to me.. Same thing for my tv with auto brightness.. but i still get good battery life. I am fully charged at about 6pm i use it till bedtime and use it for my alarm.. get up 4 am and when i get home at 2pm its still over 40%.. only thing i do is close all my running apps by holding home button a few times a day and same with ram
I work in an office so it's plugged in for the 2 hours before I leave so I have everything on full most of the day (brightness, lte...). Also, by undervolting I'm getting 30% more battery.
I think tips on increasing battery life like turning off lte and brightness are for people who can't plug in throughout the day or for emergency situations when you want to get the most out of your phone because there's some reason you can't charge.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I get anywhere from 12 - 23 hours depending on whether I'm at work or off. I can live with that...but there are situations where being unreachable poses a problem.
So, to deal with my phone addiction, I got an original replacement battery. Always have it charged and on me. When the phone shuts down, pop in the replacement and your done. About a minute without a phone. This way I don't have to UV, worry about brightness, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc...
I can't deal with the bulk of an extended battery.

30% more battery by simply undervolting? I think that's quite an overstretched statement. How is that even possible?

Its not possible. Not by solely UVing. The sole purpose of undervolting is so that your phone dosent overheat when running high clock speeds. Saving battery is just a perk. You might save a few percent with the undervolt but nowhere around 30%. But don't take my word for it.....

completely stock, tmo bloat disabled, screen @ lowest brightness, sync off
With 27% left, I'd say that's about average-good.
Dear God, I get about 8 hours with average usage. Seems very good life to me. Do you have power saver and/or sync enabled?
It's exactly like mine. However, some users actually got theirs up to 5 hours screen time. How? I'll never know
Battery life good bro, cool story

Mine's absolutely horrid, I can't for the life of me figure out what the hell's wrong with it. I'll run out of battery after about 12 hours, with the screen time at 1 hour and maybe 30 minutes if I'm lucky? The phone drinks away my battery in standby mode like a former alcoholic united with an opened beer. When I was on ICS, turning off 4G every time the screen was off with the AutomateIt app would give me excellent battery life. Ever since Jelly Bean, it doesn't seem to make a difference. I just don't even bother using AutomateIt anymore, I even uninstalled it. Useless. I check marked the option, "Restrict Background Data," but I actually had worse results with that on even. Following the thread about the Guide to good battery life, I turned off auto-sync. The only thing that seems to do for me is not get my emails in real time. No effect on the battery though. I'm guessing the battery drain has something to do with being on data (even though turning it off doesn't seem to do much) because everytime I go to school where there's little WiFi, battery's worse. Also, somehow my Messaging app takes up more battery than the screen. What's with that? I'll text every now and then, but it shouldn't eat away my battery like a fat man with the last batch of Twinkies. Enough with the dumb similes, haha, but I actually need help with this. I really don't wanna buy a battery off eBay cause the damn people are too lazy to send you the battery until a month passes, and I hate charging in the middle of the day.
I'm on 100% stock. I used to root and mess around with a ton of ROMs, but then I realized all my favourite ROMs were the ones closest to stock...
.... look at the eBay expected arrival and/or look for a seller in the USA ?
Anyway, that bit aside - have you installed something like BetterBatteryStats to be able to see what the problem is so you can fix it ?

5 hours... how !?
Easy !
I'm on stock and if I'm almost all the day on WIFI, not playing too much games, and with auto-brightness,
I can get 5 to 6 hours screen time.
(but on 4G all the day, it's more around 3 hours screen time)
This is what most people get with normal use around 14 to 16 hours and 4 to 5 hours screen time. I think the biggest issue is that 4G radio that most people have on all the time. I I have wifi everywhere so most of the time I have mine off that helps a ton. Plus all the sync stuff off, I get about 6 hours over 17 hours battery life and about 30 to 40% brightness.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
14-16 is what was normal for me when I first got my GS3 (after JB update). If you want more battery life, I recommend trying juice defender (custom settings for data off while locked). If you have stretches where you don't use your phone it works really well. Just thought I would throw that out there.
