Ok, I have just noticed this, not sure what it means. but it's something that can be easily tested by everyone in a few minutes.
While in gentle alarm in nightmode. the screen is all black and the digital clock is shown, I noticed black lines across my screen and really black dots peppered all over the screen, mostly at the top closest to the earphone. I'm thinking they are dead pixels but not sure.
To reproduce it, I downloaded SBMX, a paint app like photoshop. I painted the canvas black, turned off the lights and after my eyes adjusted, I can see the same pattern of black pixels all over the screen. there is one line near the top of the screen that goes right across.
If some people can try this and post your results it would be very appretiated. If they are dead pixels, I will return the phone.
If they were dead pixels you would see them no matter what color the screen was.
My nexus has those spots while displaying black. My Vibrant also have the dots. Its just how amoleds are, I'm not sure about the amoled plus

Yeah I have them too. If you turn the brightness to 1, you can see them.

That is pretty crappy. I'm sure most people could live with it and I probably will but it kinda erks me that this is the best they could do. I mean if it were a few phones in a bunch, but for all of them to be like it don't seem right.

It's how the screen technology is.. we had a lot of threads like this a while ago.
The conclusion was: "When are you ever going to be looking at your phone in pitch black, on a black screen, with the brightness set to 1?"
From what I have read it has something to do with Super Amoled and the glue used.
My Nexus is not near as bad as the Razr I had. Check out the Razr thread on this.
Ocassionally I would notice on my Razr when using the phone at night, without having to "look" for it.
I can honestly say that I have to try hard to see this on the Nexus, and I have never noticed it in general use, even at night. It shouldn't keep you from enjoying your phone!
edit: so much for that build quality argument they keep throwing around
lol had to say it.
I noticed this on mine in bed the other night ,it is all along one edge in landscape mode. can't see it at all in normal use though...
I don't care about the little freaky glitches or that the battery only lasts a day with moderate usage(typical android and pretty good for htc). The phone is damn sexy, HTC sense for once works for me and I like it. The screen is out of this world, and it takes a second for my eyes to accept the low resolution, and clarity of the real world when I take my eyes of the screen. I love the quality of pictures it takes and really expected far worse from an HTC camera. The design and feel is sexy. Not to heavy and not to light, 4.7 inches and it feels like a much smaller phone. Little cute LED to let me know what I am missing(not the strobe light that upsets my wife at night on the galaxy nexus). Its the first phone that makes me want to whisper love poems to it.
Now where are the damn screen protectors and cases worthy of her beauty?
There is a white one x sitting in my amazon cart right now, taunting me. I bought the GNote at launch and I love it but its not a bad idea to have a smaller phone for other situations. The one x seems pretty damn impressive. I have a feeling that with it not being sold in the US in quad core form, it will hold its value pretty well. At least until the inevitable sgs3 drops damnit Im addicted to phones

Thats true the value in the states will stay high. I loved my note but this phone just feels special.
In love
I'm definitely in love with the One X too! I have the Gnex and it's getting pretty jealous right now, lol. Screen is so much better and it's so fast. Also real pleased with all the dev going on, makes me feel better about my purchase. I've had a few screen glitches but only since I rooted and went with custom roms. Although I unlocked the bootloader in less then 24 hours so not much chance to give stock a good run. My employer offset the cost and put in $300 towards my new baby so it was a bargain!!! Very pleased overall.
Pulled the trigger on a white one. One day shipping should put it in my hands before I leave for vacation weds afternoon

Well no glitches or problems for me! bought a white version and I LOVE IT! what a fantastic phone! Very happy to be a HTC customer!
I love the phone too just wished the battery was a little better but the camera is pretty good and the best i have seen on a phone. It's light feels great. Really good screen over saturates on some colours however the quad core is a power house.
I noticed you on AT&T do you have the snap dragon version? Or did you get the unlocked global version?

I get 4G on AT&T in Texas on mine.
Oh, and I completely echo the sentiment of the OP: This phone is the ****.
Yep, I got the grey one since I dont rly like the white color. White is timeless, agreed, and can look pretty elegant (and expensive), but I am more the dark type of person (color preference, not personality or style ) like more the decent, non attention colors. Grey just fits me quite well, and yes, its one damn beauty.
Sense 4.0 still got its issues, like pretty borked memory management (Rosie Reloads anyone? Drives me crazy sometimes) and bugged Tegra 3 drivers. Tegra 2 Games and Apps mostly run horrible, and the Tegra 3 enabled Games start to lag quite abit when alot interaction is going on.
Software-wise, and performance-wise, this phone is capable of so much more. Just look that the Transformer Prime with Tegra 3. It has a similar screen resolution, but almost EVERYTHING runs effin smooth on this baby. That is just ONE proof that HTC ****ed up the rushed release with its buggy software. Cant wait for a new, optimized and more ironed out firmware upgrade!
Camera Performance isn't final as well. I guess the bad performance is due to some missing optimizations, the hardware is great.
Overall, I dont regret switching from my Galaxy S2 i9100 to the One X, knowing it can do even better than it already does.
I just got a refurb phone from AT&T a few weeks ago, and after awhile I noticed some weird stuff on the screen in the blacks when a video is playing. It's the only time you can see it - never when the screen is fully on or off, just in the blacks of videos. Mine looks like it has a "D" in it about 2/3 up the middle of the screen. It's stationary too which makes me think it's something with the phone. It really doesn't interfere with useage, it just bugs me and I'm worried it'll lead to something worse down the road.
After realizing this, I noticed my friend's Gnex has some similar issues but his phone is also recently refurb'd too.
Anyone else notice anything like this? I'm wondering if I should be returning this one or not. I'm just scared that I'll get something even worse off than the one I have now.
It's a common "issue" with OLED screens. I've heard some people DON'T have them.... but i'm pretty sure it would take looking through more phones than any carrier would be willing to let you do freely. My S3 has a few black spots... but it doesn't bother me enough that i'd really consider it an issue, although there apparently are some that DO find it severely annoying. I just don't see the point in fretting over something that's only visible on a dark screen in the dark.
so I'm guessing it's fairly normal then and nothing to really be concerned about?

Yes, I see the same thing (not a D but the spots) when I have black on the screen and I am in dark room. Talked to a friend of mine that has the SGS3 and he sees it too and mentioned it was common on the Infuse as well.
This happened with my Skyrocket but I noticed it after I dropped it a few times.
Stock ICS on my S3
Mine has a one inch streak across the bottom of the screen.

I've owned every generation of galaxy phones (captivate, gs2, gs3) and aside from using an app specifically for showing flaws on (i think) the gs2, have never noticed any artifacts.
If it's enough to detract from what you're trying to view, I'd most definitely try to get a replacement if possible. If its something you're just nitpicking on, maybe I'd let it go.
The only negative thing I can really attribute to amoled in the phones I've owned is burn in on the screen in the location of the top bar that runs horizontally ( carrier, time, signal etc.), but as it happened on the captivate it obviously hasn't been a huge issue for me, and it really isn't tbh.
I noticed it on mine as well, first noticed it watching Netflix in a dark room when the scene went dark. Now that I know where to look, I can see it other times when that section is dark or black. My unit is brand new and I've only had it for 4 days.
Completely normal for OLED tech. I have them on my GS3 but even watching a movie in the dark doesn't focus on it long enough for it to be a bother. If I am watching a video on TED with huge black borders I see it, but not something constantly in motion.

Mine had some very obvious ink marks (lines and dots), but amazingly they faded over the course of a few months. Now, on a full black screen in the pitch black it is a completely even tone of grey.
The lack of true black still bothers me, but that is a different topic. At least the blacks seem perfectly even.

I have those spots as well when the screen is black. It must have to do with the idea that theoretically, black pixels on AMOLED screens should be completely off. I guess the tech just hasn't been perfected yet.

Except that isn't even slightly true with SAMOLEDs... in a dark environment black is noticeably grey, and this seems to get worse over time.

I feel like the screen from my new note makes my eyes ache and get blurry after extended use. Does anyone else have this experience? I am wondering if it is the WQXGA LCD screen that is doing it. I didn't have eye strain with my last tab, the asus tf101, which admittedly had a much lower resolution IPS screen. I also didn't notice eye strain for the short time I had the tf700, another asus with an IPS screen which I ended up returning for the note. So maybe IPS screens are better for me.
I tried reducing the brightness on the note and have it in movie mode but I still notice the pain. I am not sure if this pain will go away after time or I am imagining it.
If anyone has any experience with this I would appreciate hearing about it.
Thanks very much in advance.
So is my first time with a touch device, and with this resolution. I didnt experienced that... I am pretty sure that is only you: (or maybe, you just need vitamins )
I dont have any medical problems in my eyes, I dont need glasses... I never experienced something like that (just something weird in my fingers) but actually my boyfriend does...
He feels the same as you... But in this case, his problem is different... After a long time with the same problem, he experienced random nosebleed's... Like pression. The only thing that helped him is just the use of eyeglasses. But maybe is not the same thing, so dont worry, im just saying my opinion.
What else do you feel? Surely your eyes got tired, or you just need glasses for that. Something else that you want to say? Greetings! (And sorry for my bad english.)

Your Note probably has smaller text than the other tablets. Now your eyes are straining to see the smaller text.
The cheap solution is Drugstore reading glasses, which may or may not help you.
The best solution is a visit to your optometrist. It happens to most of us. :cyclops:
Thanks for the replies. I have used other 10 inch tablets and I have not had a problem with them. Why would the text be smaller on the Note if I am looking at the same web page in Chrome, for example, at the same zoom level as another 10 inch tab like the transformer tf101 or tf700?

The higher the resolution, the smaller the "default" font.
A 10" 800 x 600 screen will use a larger font, while a 10" 1920 x 1080 can take advantage of the resolution by using a smaller font.
The normal eye can make out smaller text if it's "clear". Lower resolution screens have fuzzier text.
The Note's 1920 x 1080 screen is the "clearest" on the market, beating the Apple by a wide margin. Any other 10" tablet you look at will be less clear than the Note.

No need to be rude. This guy has a legitimate question. Sorry if it's not up to your forum standards, but this is the Q&A forum and he had a Q. No need to be a douche bag about it.
I had the same problem. Two things helped
1. Got an app named Lux from Play Store. Excellent for reducing eye strain especially at night.
2. Installed a screen cover - matte anti reflective. Also has the advantage of being fingerprint resistive. Amazon has several brands.S-pen works just fine with it.
I get blurry eyes and what not like @xda-soar mensioned thanks to using the tablet in a dark environment. I didnt even know an app existed that can lower the brightness further (esp in stock Android) so Thanks for that @arbit12 the Lux app is awesome and Thanks @xda-soar for asking the "idiotic" ( )question as otherwise I'd probs had never found this app.

I'm not blaming the screen as such but I find it doesnt go as dim as I'd like at times when I use it in a relatively dark room. I'm used to using my laptop at a very very low brightness setting.
During the day however I never have any problems with it, so it is just a night thing for me but anyways with the Lux app now installed on the tablet all is well.

Actually any Samsung AMOLED hurts my eyes, too. I think it is not problem with most people.
I and my wife are facing the same issue of eye strain , this is not after prolonged usage , within 2 mins , eye strain starts while using regularly , there is no strain whenever j use my iPhone and my friend's ipad
Yes!! I found your question when I googled the same question. My eyes are blurry for at least 10 minutes after using my S7. My old phone’s, iPads, don’t do this.. and I’m on low brightness and night mode.. it still does it. I needed to buy glasses shortly after I got the phone. I am at the age for it, but the eye strain and pain is seriously ooonly after every use of my phone. I don’t even want to check my messages any more. Ouchies!

I have just got the new note 10 phone and experiencing the same thing.... never had problems with my eyes beforehand, since this phone!
For all those posting negative snotty comments.. get a life... why are you even here to comment if you have nothing good to say?
Have you got a new device? How are your eyes now
Old topic but:
- IPS/LCD is usually less stressful on the eye (as there is no pwm flickering on <100% brightness) compared to OLED.
- Notebookcheck usually tests for PWM/flicker in their reviews. Also see: http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/threads/flicker-free-tablets.64302/
I would say.. the Note 2014 is fine, but it will never be as good as an e-reader screen - in terms of like eye friendliness.
For me, I did have some eye strain with this device when I was using it for hardcore note taking. But I think it only happened because I was so focused on taking notes, and trying to make them look good and whatnot that I didn't blink often enough. My relative used this tablet for a few years - and now it's back to me. Used it like all day long and never complained about eye strain. So I am certain it was on me.
I feel strain when I look at it in the dark to unlock. Apparently due to facial recognition, the brightness goes full to emit light and brighten the face for recognition.unfortunately you need to leave eyes open for it to unlock or see what you are typing. Switching off facial recognition and turning on blue filter fixed it for me.

NO. Actually, I REALLY wanted the Black Onyx version of the phone, because I simply prefer dark colors and thought the Blue Coral looked "girly" and "baby blue."
Black wasn't available, so I ordered the blue with the intention of exchanging it and paying a restocking fee later. And let me tell you dude. This Blue Coral Note 7... is.... f***ing astounding!
I don't know why pictures and videos all over the internet make it look so... light blue. But dude, it's waaaaay darker and nicer looking in person. It actually looks like a navy blue candy color. It's beautiful man! Trust me, check it out in person if you can, I decided to keep the blue once I actually took a look at it. In my opinion, it looks much better than the Black Onyx.
It's so nice man. I seriously don't know why it's so light blue looking in pictures, but until you actually SEE it in person, you wont be able to fully appreciate what I'm talking about. It's a shiny, dark, chrome/candy blue, with side panels that look silver in certain lighting, and red amber gold in other lighting. I haven't received my case yet but I have a feeling it's going to blend really well with both black and silver/gray-ish cases.

Thx for the feedback but I don't have any chance to look at the blue until Sept 16. Did a lot of research about the blue and at this moment I have a mix feeling about it. About the black not so much. So I will stick with it ?
Absolutely gorgeous. I wasn't so sure based on the renders, but seeing it in person is an experience. Even my iPhone fanboy friends have said, unprompted, that it looks and feels better than the 6S or 6S+.
This is what phones should look like.
Wasn't a huge fan of the Coral in person (went Onyx), but that's just a small quibble, because it's without a doubt the most beautiful consumer gadget I've ever seen. It feels just as good in the hand. This is Samsung's high water point, they should be proud of the design. It's almost no surprise that something like this would be somewhat fragile. Don't think I could bear to put it in much of a case.
I have to say I love the way the back and recents buttons are hidden. You only see them when they light up. I think it's one of those little attention to detail that makes this device so premium.

I have to say I love the way the back and recents buttons are hidden. You only see them when they light up. I think it's one of those little attention to detail that makes this device so premium.

It's so damn sexy in Black Onyx! Every time I look at it, I cry tears of joy and get put back on another emotional rollercoaster! Loving the dark theme I downloaded off the theme store along with my dark themed keyboard and Nova Launcher.

I'm always looking for good dark themes.
