Hey Guys,
New to GNex community..
I was using SGS2 and switched to GNex just yesterday.. quite happy with it..
I have observed that the Page/App scrolling on ICS is not as fast as it was on Gingerbread, especially in Applications like Facebook and few others..
Is this an issue with ICS or is it that the Apps are still not properly compatible with ICS.
any fix or workaround for this ?
Developer options force gpu acceleration

I think if you force gpu it fixes it. I don't even have a nexus so I really don't know for sure. Also its actually an apo thing, once gb apps are updated for ics, the problem will be fixed.

u mean to enable Force GPU rendering ?
will give that a try...
personally i dont find force gpu fixes scrolling for me, it actually makes scrolling worse mostly. Those choppy apps still just need updates i think to ICS like facebook. Perfect example is twitter. It scrolled very choppy and just finally got updated and now smooth like the stock apps.

Twitter was always laggy for me, until I turned on "Force GPU Rendering". Yes the new update fixed it so we don't need to enable this but still.

Same here. This and battery life are the two most debated "problems" with this device. From what I understand 4.0.3/4 are much better in this regard.

I didn't make this, I just found it and put it in a flashable zip.
It was in the meXdroid Pre-Ghost Chili ROM, but for some reason not in the latest AIO version. I think it was also in the CM7 nightlies, but I'm not entirely sure.
Anyway, it just makes the webkit browsers(pretty much all browsers except Opera and Firefox) a little smoother, especially when pinch-zooming in.
I tested this working on CM7 nightly 204 and meXdroid Ghost Chili AIO.
It didn't work on MIUI and Sense ROMS. MIUI hanged at boot and Sense crashed the browser. You can try it if you want though.
Download:
http://www.multiupload.com/P4UCPVX4IY
The .zip flashes 2 files:
system/lib/libwebcore.so
system/lib/libwebkitaccel.so
Do you have some benchmarks or something?
Because I don't know if I will flash it if it is a "little smoother"
Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DZnie3u0YI
Dang! That's smoother than Opera! Wish it was working for MIUI though :/
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
It's not smoother than Opera, but it's definitely an improvement.
Zooming out is still a little laggy like normal, and scrolling on large pages(like xda forums expanded view) is still laggy.
I wonder why they removed this from the CM7 nightlys though.
When I first judged the performance, I was basing my observations on the YT video. Now, I'm running CM7 and using the stock browser.
- the stock browser seemed smoother than Dolphin HD, but yes, not as smooth as Opera. Rendering wasn't perfect on Opera 100% of the time though (the google mobile page comes to mind).
- it was definitely smoother than normal, mostly after the page finished loading. When the page was still loading, scrolling was still fairly choppy. But still definitely recommended for those not on Opera.

Definitely some difference on CM7. Stability is noticeably lower though.
Still not at Opera's level =/
Vellamo shows that it's now running close to 60fps instead of 30fps

I use stock browser on meXdroidmod ghost chili AIO. It is buttery smooth. Way better than the video posted above. I really can't imagine it being better cause its that smooth.
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
I actually used meXdroidmod AIO in the video. After I flashed gapps(non modded) it broke the theme.
Also, because all browsers on Android use the same webkit engine, I doubt one is smoother than the other. Because of this, this should work on all those browsers(incl. Dolphin HD).
With the exception of Opera Mobile and Firefox though. Those 2 use their own rendering engine.

Works great! They removed it from CM due to stability issues but honestly I rather deal with the occasional crash than slow browsing. For shame on all of you who didn't thank the guy for posting this! Wtf is wrong with you people?! Don't worry! I gave you 5 points to make up for it. Also, it only works on 2.3.4 and above...

I haven't noticed any stability issues myself though, but I also rather have a occasional crash than the normal choppy browsing. I always had to use Opera, since the stock browsers were so horribly slow.
Let's hope IceCreamSandwich will be better. The ICS browser will supposedly have full hardware acceleration in the browser.
Also, I just tested this on my sisters' Nexus S, and it worked. Perhaps it works on more devices?

Yeah, it should work for any phone with 2.3.4 and above. The latest CM Nightlies build 220 has a performance option to smooth scrolling in general. Combine with this and its pretty darn smooth. Opera is a great alternative but its rendering can be screwy sometimes. Plus, it always opens pages in overview which drives me nuts, lol! But ICS, we are ALL looking forward to. I was unaware that the browser would have full hardware acceleration. That's awesome! Our devices have a decent GPU and great CPU so we should be set!
Thanks for the mod, it works well on the CM7 nightly build that I'm running
Is this only for the g2?

No, it also works on a Nexus S and probably more devices. But I'm not sure if the .zip will work on your device.
If it doesn't, you can just extract the zip and use adb to push "libwebkitaccel.so" and "libwebcore.so" to system/lib/.
Yep it works, snappy. Thanks dude

It causes some visual artifacts, so it's turned off.
Forgive me if this has been posted elsewhere but I couldnt find it.
Q1. Has anyone experienced clicking the Home button from another app or from the app drawer and seeing just the wallpaper for a few moments until the home screen widgets, folder and shortcuts are redrawn?
Q2. Also, Has anyone noticed lag when scrolling between home screens if a Live Wallpaper is used? I notice some live wallpapers make scrolling worse than some others.
If this has been posted, let me know?
Yes to Q1.
Also had lock up in gallery with a spinning circle and nothing happening.
Yes to Q2. All of the live wallpapers except one cause lag. Quite disappointing.
Yes I've noticed this which is quite disappointing considering everything is meant to be GPU accelerated and butter smooth in an iPhone-esque manner, general navigation doesn't seem any different to my HD2. Hopefully software updates can overcome these issues.
It's good to know I don't have a faulty handset but its a shame that its not as smooth as the early reviews lead me to believe (although it is very smooth once in the app drawer and other places).
Does anyone know any impressive Live Wallpapers that have little or no detrimental effect on Home Screen lag? I find Koi Free quite impressive without causing much noticeable lag (but its a bit old hat now, so I'd like something different).
Yeah I find it very hard to work out how The Verge could've given it such a high score, software in particular, and called it "blazing fast".
It's good, but it doesn't feel very fast to me.
I'm very disappointed by the live wallpaper lag, i thought ICS completely diminished any lag in the OS
all the live wallpapers make the scrolling look historic except for the one: PHASE BEAM
that one is as smooth as a picture wallpaper
anyone else? hopefully its easily fixable in a future general maintenece OTA or some custom roms
if you guys are using third party wallpapers then they probably were never updated to enable the hardware exceleration.
if your using the built in, then thats totally unacceptable IMO and is very upsetting since i was looking forward to having a device that will actually be able to run LWPs.

I have tryed the ones that came with with phone and sadly it is not smooth also.

It feels like my Sensation with a 3rd party launcher. =(
Still love the phone but this wasn't supposed to happen.
i read in the endaget review that not all live wallpapers are HW accelerated - as of right now only "Phase Beam" (the default) one is.
Which is why you should notice theres no lag on the Phase Beam Live wallpaper (at least not for me), whereas stuff like "Nexus" live wallpaper will seem to lag
This is the paragraph i read:
"Not all the live wallpapers are fully optimized (for example, Phase Beam is, but Water isn't). Developers have to add a single line of code to their apps to take advantage of 2D hardware acceleration -- you're able to enable this as the default for all apps by checking "Force GPU rendering" in the Developer Options."
So apparently its just one line of code that devs need to add in for their apps - granted, these are GOOGLE wallpapers so im not sure why they just didnt add it in themselves.
But this also adds to the Developer options of "Force 2D rendering" - although im not sure if this will help the unoptimized live wallpaper lag
just my 2cents
1. Yes
2. Yes
I also sometimes get lag when launching the app drawer.
Scrolling widgets also seems so stutter slightly as well.
Glad to know its not just my handset, but dissapointed as well. My GS2 was buttery smooth everywhere
Well, this is disappointing. It's a pretty basic part of the user experience, one that you'd think Google would spend a lot of time on. My GS1 running 2.3.4 suffers from refilling the launcher when I return to the home screen. I was hoping the SGN with ICS would end that experience. You guys running a lot of apps? Maybe there's something in common between those affected that isn't experienced by everyone. Will be watching this thread.
Noticed it straight after first boot, amount of apps has nothing to do with it, at least for me.
Anyone tried different launchers. Different launchers play a big role in Android user experience and smoothness. I don't think any custom launcher has hardware acceleration enabled yet, but it would be worth a shot.
It is also unacceptable that the default stock Live Wallpapers from Google weren't updated to utilize the hardware acceleration. HWA is the main feature of ICS that everyone was waiting for. EVERYTHING on the Galaxy Nexus should be setup for HWA. No excuses.
On a side note, all of my phones lagged a little when using LWPs. Even my fast G2x. The SGS2 had hardware acceleration enabled... so it could just be the launcher.
adw launcher FTW.
enable 2d doesnt fix it
has this been opened as an issue in the google aosp page
Hmm. This reminds me of the first time I took my Nexus S out of the box..
Just wait for some custom roms and such, google are apparantly horrible at optimizing performance.
I have a feeling that using GPU acceleration to certain wallpapers would cause the phone to become unstable or something, like how forcing GPU acceleration has been reported to cause instability. Google probably disabled it while they quietly work on the issue.

perhaps
but the one live wallpaper works WONDERFULLY
Well, I've had my phone for a little over a week and I'm realizing lag when scrolling in the app drawer. its not extremely laggy, but its just not super smooth. When I also text really fast it also lags which is really hard to type. I turned of auto correction I think it fixed the problem, but I'm not 100%. Anyone of you experiencing this?
Oh forgot to mention do you guys hear static when you have the volume really high?
I don't have this issue but I am also using the force gpu rendering option. Everything is smooth and fast.

Ive had the completely opposite experience... I too experience "lag" when typing, choppy scrolling, slow opening / running apps, etc... OP, I have the same issues as you do. Please advise if you were able to fix them and if so, what steps did you use?
I dont have lag when typing in text. But many people have complained about stuttering in the app drawer.
But i use handcent since day 1 for texts...

Yeah, if i scroll really fast during the app drawer i notice lag, a little choppy lag, for most people many might not notice it. But I do, i think because i'm so used to my 120hz monitor when I used a 60hz monitor I notice just by moving around a window. I might be picky, but there is lag without a doubt in this phone or atleast my phone.

i already did it. i don't notice an improvement.
Different roms behave differently. Mine was pretty smooth but I've noticed lag on APW scrollable Widgets and flicking through the XDA on several roms. 4.0.3 helped but didn't fix.
Now I'm running Axi0m rom now which is 4.0.4 and there is no lag anymore. Much faster. I'm not over clocking or anything outside of the stock settings for that rom.
So I don't know if its 4.0.4 or the kernel/rom combination, but its a welcome addition. It uses Franco's kernel so maybe it was fixed there?
I DONT have Force 2D enabled either. FYI. Realistic answer.

Don't listen to people telling to "Force GPU rendering", they don't know what they're talking about (Launcher2 already uses GPU rendering).
The slight stuttering when scrolling the app drawer is a known bug, reportedly fixed in firmware > 4.0.2 and it also didn't seem to happen in 4.0.1.

^^^^ This.
Wth is with ppl saying to force gpu rendering, it only works in apps that don't make use of gpu rendering.
The UI in ICS is rendered completely by the gpu so checking/unchecking that option does NOTHING to the UI.
That myth needed to be put to bed.

You guys seem to know your game so how come it still lags in 4.0.3?
for some weaird reason it seems to be stable for me right now... I did check force gpu and 4.0.4 since it's unoffical there isnt any real fast roms for 4.0.4 thanks guys!
The first thing I do after a fresh ROM flash is change the animation scales to 0 in Settings>Development>window+transition animations. I also disable app drawer in/out animations in my launcher settings. The stock ICS animations are fairly obnoxious and much more pronounced than the GB animations. I do the same on my I9100 on CM9. Look at it this way, animations are wasted time, if they're a little over the top then it's more wasted time + more work. My GN is as smooth as my I9100 throughout its life; stock, modded stock, CM7, and CM9.

So I am guessing we all are seeing delays in animations which look like lag? it so so much smoother right now. Will report later on.

Guys, I've owned my Nexus with JB now for some time and had a S2 before..I've never cared much about the performance of Whatsapp but it seems like it's getting worse with every version...for me scrolling through the contacts list or the chat history is laggy as hell...I remember it beeing OK on my Galaxy S2.
Also some people with other phones told me they have no problems with it (but I don't trust them as many of them don't even know what Android is  ).
What's you experience?
Yes, it is laggy and it is obvious that the lag is not caused by the hardware. It is really annoying. They should optimize it for Galaxy Nexus.
?
Scrolls just fine here.
Well isn't whatsapp based on gingerbread? If so, there's your problem. Galaxy Nexus don't like older ver of Android based apps. What you can do is just simply turn on the Force GPU under developer setting. Might get graphical glitches here or there, but worth the smoothness if you're into them

Remeber as well phone and contacts are native, and all data is stored locally.
FB and Play store are pulling data over your 3G/WiMAX/WiFi so there is bound to be a little lag as the app updates.
ive tried all those "tweaks" already ive had this phone since launch
but those don't answer my question because those certain apps are somehow smoother yet others are still choppy even the settings menu is choppy no matter what ROM or tweak used
Robobob i see what your saying and i noticed this issue even on the evo4g LTE so yeah that makes sense
You notice the 'choppiness' in all ROMs or just Sense based ones?
There is a smooth scrolling mod by AndroidON in the android development section. You could try adding that in. Can't guarantee it'll fix everything, but it should solve the settings menu problem.
What about v6 supercharger, you given that a whirl lately?
i think aosp are a lil smoother over all than sense ROMs but ill look into that never heard of that mod
v6 i could never notice a difference
