[Q] To devs or anyone...please help!!!! - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Here's the problem . My friend has an Stock Epic 4g and it eventually bit the dust. She can still access the download screen via 1+power buttons but other than that her phone won't turn on. Now, thats not the problem. I can fix that. The problem is that she had very important text messages in her phone and we're trying to see if there's a way to retrieve them before I "unbrick" her phone. has anyone found a way to pull info off the phone before undergoing restoration and deleting everything? I apologize in advance if the answer is already on here somewhere. I searched and came up with nothing in our forums except for the text message history viewer on sprints website that is no longer there and besidesm even if it was, these texts are from around christmas. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I think you're pretty much stuck. I had the same problem once and never managed to get it working. If you can somehow make a backup of the messed up system that would be great. If the phone is stock, I don't think there's a way to do that.

no, there's not. I thought of that too. I was wondering if maybe i plug the phone into my computer maybe there's something that can take everything from the phone and copy it to my computer? or even just view the system folders in hopes that I can get the text messages that way but i dunno if that's even possible.

No. She's screwed. Tell her to back up next time.

OUCH! When I give people bad news I at least hand them a bottle of petroleum jelly first! Yes this is an attempt to make a very dry (or is that wet) joke! Sorry had to.
On topic I don't know if you can mount the system w/adb once it is in that state and k0nane would know more and if he is saying no I doubt it.

I am by no means an expert but... could you odin in the recovery, get into CWM, make a backup, extract the data image, pull the messaging data and then restore after getting the phone functional?

Wouldn't that just reflash the recovery partition? OP: Try this if you haven't just reOdin'ed yet. It wouldn't damage the messages any more than they already are.

That is what I was going for, just overwriting the recovery partition like you would for rooting GB. You could even try to bring it back to life by flashing a kernel and see if it would boot. Neither of those operations should delete data.

I agree with the above. Don't odin it, try reflashing the recovery partition, nandroid everything to sd, THEN unbrick, restore data.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium

Try the nandroid restore and see if that works. U should be able to get into cwm

Make sure you tell her that her boyfriend still loves her even though the text no longer exists.

Download google voice from the market and you should see your texts there. For whatever reason, all my texts have been saved even though I've wiped my phone many times for different ROMs.

I suppose I'll keep voice integration as a habit for my device. its a good way to keep those important texts. Just need to be sure the lady doesn't go through the phone and stumble upon old "secret" ones.

[Q] How do I get data back on my Evo?

Here's what happened:
Called Sprint because I was unable to send out SMS although I was able to receive. I was on the device at the time of the call and I asked the rep if she wanted to call me on another phone. She said that what she had to do didn't involve me being on a different line. I found it kind of weird but I figured she knew what she was talking about.
She tells me that she's done doing what she was doing and that I had to reboot my phone. I disconnect the call reboot my phone and test out the SMS. It works but now my data doesn't work at all. I'm using Cyanogen RC1 and I see no 1X or 3G at the top. I can s/r calls as well as s/r sms.
I called again and the guy knew I was using Cyanogen's ROM (I guess they have a way to do that now). He tried basic troubleshooting but we couldn't fix it. How do I fix this? I remember seeing a website link in a thread a while back that contained all the different PRL versions available for download in a .zip file that we could flash in recovery. Does anyone have the website?
I tried rebooting. Should I do a nandroid restore? I have a feeling it's network related so I don't know if that will fix the issue.
Have you tried flashing a sense or stock rom and see if you get text messages there. Worth a shot. If not give your nandroid a shot or even a full wipe install.
I'm going to a nandroid restore right now. I already backed up all my apps and stuff.

Good luck!
No luck. I'm on the phone with Sprint right now and all of the reps I speak to are lost. I know it's a network issue and something not being enabled on their side.
Ok I got off the phone with them and still haven't resolved my issue. They are claiming they can't help me because my phone is rooted. They wanted me to press ##3282 commands but Cyanogen doesn't have those functions built in.
This mess all started off with a texting problem. The thing that baffles me is that SMS has nothing to do with data.

Yup, that was my idea.
I'm still a bit taken back at the fact they knew which rom you were using.
Yeah man the guy was like " I'm looking at your account and I was checking what version you were using and it says Fresh". I told him that it was what I was using before but I'm using Cyanogen now.
They somehow know what version. I think they somehow send a signal to your device so it can send back the info that's in the about section. I thought it was pretty cool. He kept stressing that my warranty was void.

[Q] I have a Samsung Epic flashed to nTelos and...

I'd like to know if it's safe to start breaking into it. I know rooting won't hurt it, but what about custom ROMs, or even updating to Gingerbread? I don't want to mess up the current settings that have been applied for the phone to work on nTelos.
Running Froyo 2.2.1 EC05
Baseband version S700.0.55.EC05
Actually if you stay on stock modded roms meaning you stay away from CM7 or any other AOSP ROM then you'll be fine I however have no idea to prove this but have only seen people on cricket and boost mobile have problems only on aosp roms never any stock roms
If you need the latest stock rom ill be happy to help you odin it and root it as well let me know if you have any other questions.

Ok...got another question. I keep randomly getting the "Error 67: Registration error. Your Sprint data service username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again"
Since I'm not on a Sprint plan, is there an apk or file I can delete to get rid of this thing? It's driving me freakin' insane!
Also, I was flipping through the phone and found this: W_RF_AUTH. What the hell is it? The permissions on it are sketchy as hell, do not want. OK to delete???
Ususal rule of thumb, if you don't know what it is don't delete it... freeze it with titanium backup and if strange things begin to happen then unfreeze... iif not its probably safe to delete...

I FC'd it and nothing has happened so far. Can't freeze with free version. I can't seem to find where it's stored on my device either. Root explorer searched every directory in my phone and nothing. I think I'm gonna back my phone up and use TB to uninstall it...if it causes any undesired effects I'll revert to my backup.

Have you googled anything to get rid of it? What is error 67 anyways?
For error 67, and this applies to most sprint phones that use Vision, Powervision, EVDO, Etc. Error 67 indicates that the username or password stored in your phone is incorrect. this condition is very rarely related to the coverage in an area, usually occurs after recent device swap, or attempting to use modem/hotspot while your account does not have a valid modem/hotspot plan.
Before going through too much effort, you should power your phone off, then back on, update your profile (this varies by model support.sprint.com has guides for most phones) and determine that the feature that you are attempting to use should work ( for example to use hotspot, you must be subscribed to hotspot. to use phone's web browser the web service should not be blocked, Etc.) if you still have trouble with error 67 after following this information please feel free to send me a private message.
When I odined el30 I don't think I had you flash the latest el30 modem delta so flash this : http://db.tt/oL0nSl3s
Then do the profile update as well as the prl update and reboot and see if your phone stops displaying the error 67

Stuck on Edge!!!

Hello everyone,
I wonder if anyone can help me. I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy S III from T-mobile, running CM 10. Since last week I've been having trouble with it after I updated the CM 10 rom. For some weird reason I cannot receive calls while I am using my data connection, incoming calls are always sent to voicemail. I tried the ##DATA# code to try to turn off the DDTM mode but later on I read that I cannot access this menu unless I am on stock ROM, I tried to flash T-mobile's stock ROM with Odin but the process kept getting stuck with no progress at all.
I kept looking and I came to the idea that my problem was my IMEI, which when I checked, was 0. I restored my IMEI and now I have my IMEI number and everything but I my internet connection is still stuck on EDGE and I cannot receive any calls. I even tried updating my modem I tried several different T-mobile modems for my phone and none of them can take my phone off EDGE.
then I tried changing the network type with the *#*#4636#*#* the actual network type option that it has selected is WCDMA preferred, I went ahead and selected LTE/GSM/CDMA but that option doesn't stay!!! I am going nuts here!!! I want my 4G connection back, I have tried everything with no luck at all.
I just hope that somebody out there has gone through this and found a solution cause I am losing all my hope and I don't want to take my phone to T-mobile since I cant flash it back to stock rom.
If anyone here could please help out I will be extremely thankful.
Thanks in advance.

It's more to it than simply injecting your IMEI. You have to inject it, back it up, and then restore it.
Well i had to enter my IMEI manually to generate a .txt to write it to my phone because the one i had before was corrupted cause it was 0.
Was thete any other step that I skiped doing?
I figure i wouldnt make a back up before injecting my IMEI manually cause i didnt have one.
Am I screwed??

Yes, you skipped two complete steps. There's three steps, again, Injection, Backup, and then Restore. Go back to Peoplearmy's thread and follow it completely.

Only thing is that whenever i find a possible solution i doesnt fix it since it seems it is something else. I am trying now to do peoplearmy's post to see if this one does the trick. The first time i put manually my IMEI i did it following a different thread so I hope this one fixes the problem.

I did this method, I cant actually check if my 4g is working since unfortunately at home I always get EDGE so I will check later when I go out.
I have a question, I did check on the dialer my IMEI but I saw a picture of somebody on peoplearmy's thread and their IMEI included a /0# at the end and I realized that mine doesn't.
Does the IMEI need to have that /#0 at the end in order to work or is it ok? I just want to make sure since I can only check my connection speed when I go out.
thank you

As far as I know, your IMEI should just be a simple number. If the IMEI you're seeing on the software matches your IMEI on the back of your phone, then you're good in that department. If you also followed the steps for the backup and restore. Then you're good. The backup is important, because it allows for the restore. The restore has some (stuff) that adds all of the settings back to allow you to connect to 4G. Does that make sense? It's a three-step process when you lose your IMEI for the first time.
Inject, backup, restore. It has to be done, because the restore really does add something back to make it work properly.
Should you lose it again in the future, you can simply just restore and be right back.

I don't use a MVNO, so I am not sure which regular troubleshooting steps would clear away your carrier settings. (I'm thinking using EFS Clear in Odin is the only concern, but that is sometimes needed for modem issues.)
Based off that rom's thread, you must be using the NS4G modem. Since your issue is with connectivity:
Perform a CWM backup of your current setup.
Flash an Epic modem rom and FC09 modem. (You can flash the modem using CWM. There's a thread in the dev forum w/ links.)
Try testing connection again.
I'd normally tell a Sprint Epic user to boot into FC09 multiboot and update profile & PRL, but I don't even think the PRL update would work for you. I'd then say, start from scratch by using Odin to flash FC09 with repartition checked. If they still had issues with connectivity, then I'd recommend using EFS clear in Odin when reflashing either just the FC09 modem or the entire FC09 tar.
Because you are on another carrier, I'm weary of suggesting you use Odin so quickly. If you haven't already, dive into your phone settings and document your carrier specific info you changed to get it working. This way, if you end up doing something that resets your original changes, then you can reconfigure it.
So give the suggestion that is listed above a try.
Since I'm very much a noob myself, I'm only tossing this out to possibly trigger an idea for someone else: Would perhaps the issue lie in the Build.prop or one of those similar files? I've poked around so many of them I can't remember which hold what tidbits of info... I know the Build.prop holds most of the primary carrier info, but I seem to recall another one that stored a bunch of info for a bunch of the other carriers (though that might have been for roaming and may not be of any help here).
*shrug* Otherwise, I's gots nothin' lol

[Q] HTC One Internal Data Loss

So what happened today, I was just managing some files on my HTC One in Windows. Deleting a few files and then all of a sudden the progress bar stops responding when I went to delete a folder. Not sure if the folder matters or not but either way, I clicked 'cancel' since the progress bar wasn't moving and I figured I would just delete the files in there later.
Unplugged phone and all of a sudden, there were 0 files on my internal memory. I tried to reboot and still nothing, no files showed up on my internal memory and the storage shows the same with most space being free.
I'm not really sure why that happened but I guess just a warning for anyone else out there to learn from my mistakes.
This has happened to me before on a different computer with a different phone (Galaxy Nexus). Both have no sd-card and use the MTP protocol for connecting to Windows. I think there might be a bug in the way that Android handles that with files but I can't prove it.
Any tips on data recovery?
I don't think there's anything you can do. Sorry bud.

Will do, once I am able to get the data off. So far I was able to get the memory block off and I can 'see' the deleted files but I can't quite recover them just yet. I am going to try a good recovery software.
I've tried a couple of things but so far it doesn't look too good for most of my files.
Try this out. I have not tested but I seen this thread when I was on GNEX http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994705

That's what I was following. I was able to get the raw mmc block off the phone and I started the process some 20 minutes or so after the incident. So there shouldn't be much over written. However, following those steps and using the same application, I can't seem to get any of my wanted files.
My next step is try something like extundelete.
Sorry to hear

Looks like I was unable to get any of my data back.
I just don't seem to understand exactly what went wrong so it's very difficult fix/reverse. I tired multiple different tools and different ways but never got proper files back.

Same thing (maybe) happened to me, posted awhile back, closer to this things release. A factory data reset is what brought it back. I still struggle to understand how this phone mounts storage, but the reset cleared it up. It has not happened again, but I quit fooling around in /shell/emulated/0 and switched to TWRP to manage backups.

I'll give that a try tomorrow and try to keep usage to a minimum today but I fear it may be too late already since I record ~3-4GB worth of video yesterday after I gave up. I had no other but to record.
Yea, it seems it didn't work at all. Oh well, at least I know for the future if it ever happens again what to try.
