Hello Guys
Just received a new sd card for my desire but after searching the net how to copy all the content from my old sd card I couldnt find anything Im looking for which is why im making this topic.
Anyway I have an 8gb card with 1gb ext3, swap0, and willing to upgrade to 16gb ext4, do I just make the nand backup + ext and then restore it? or it wont restore because of the ext3 and ext4 ?
Regards
C.
ps. dalvik is also moved to sd card
ps2. ive accessed the OLD ext partition on my windows pc using the ext2read program and found 3 folders there, app, app=private and dalvik, so do I just copy those onto the new sd + all the files from fat32 partition onto the new one and will that work?
Hi,
Yes,
Imo could Linux do these tasks better but your option will do it also.
First make a nand backup and than cope the fat stuff to the new card and after that put the ext folders in your new ext partition.
Should work, be sure the kernel of your rom supports ext4
Kind regards

LINK THERE TO A REALLY GOOD EXT4 ALIGNMENT ZIP
Just create your partition as normal then flash the zip from recovery

no idea what this is
Ive copied all the fat32 files and then restored the sd-ext and seems to be working, had few fcs so far but when I will have more time I will reinstall everything
Htc Desire
I think its tough task for me
No its not. Simple. Backup nandroid + ext, put new card in, format to fat32 + ext, nandroid restore. Copy old card fat32 contents to new fat32. Done.

When upgrading sdcard I used PC software to backup whole partitons and then restore them to new sdcard. That was very succesful. I hope this will help)
I've seen posts mentioning partitioning but what is it?
and what is the Swap size?
and does it really improve speed and such?
If you want to use link2sd or similar then you need at least two partitions on your sd card, I have a 1gb ext4 and 512mb swap. The ext4 is for link2sd which, to simplfy it, uses part of your sd card as an extension of internal memory meaning an ability to install more apps or leaving more internal memory free; the swap partition is for linux swap, which won't make a huge difference, maybe only noticable if you use your phone heavily.

After seeing this thread I've installed Link2SD & wondered what the best way to Partition my SD Card was. Should I use a Linux distribution or the Partitioning feature in CWM?

Using cwm will wipe your sdcard. Use Linux, or on windows use partition wizard.

Thanks. I'll be using a new 32GB SD Card as my current 8GB one will not get much mileage with apps, app data and other files.

I'm using the Link2SD and I can move system apps to the partitions, but is this safe to do?
Like if I plug in my USB to my pc and I have an important app in teh partition will it just crash my phone?
Android will only unmount the first partition. The second partition (which is used by Link2SD) will not be touched, so everything is safe.
Would moving everything off the internal memory save battery? or would it have no effect?
and if the SD cards read and write speeds are faster than the internal memory would that make it faster?
If you have an sdcard that has faster r/w speeds than internal memory then yes. If that's possible...

I've tried using ext2,ext3 & ext4 and link2sd says its not a compatable file system and even fat32 doesn't even work. What am I doing wrong?

Which kernel are you using? Stock gb kernel doesn't support partitions, ics only ext2. For full partition support you need Doomkernel for gb/ics or Arcknight.

I'm using Stock Sony Kernal with ICS. I tried unlocking boot loader, but got bored of waiting ages for Android SDK to install.

It's a pain in the arse, and unless you're unhappy with the way your phone performs probably better sticking with the stock rom.

Yeah. I've trimmed my phone back to virtually the Stock Android that the GNex uses with just the Sony customization that I need like Calendar, Contacts & Dialer, LiveWare Manager, Track ID, Facebook Inside Xperia, Sony Theme & Xperia Gallery, & I'm pretty happy with it at that, compared with the pain of having to wait an eternity for Android SDK to install.

Hello. I am new to this forum. I am curious how many people really use a swap partition and what is the method of of using swap in htc wildire s?
I am well aware of Linux OS and understand the need of swap but in case of android does it really improves something?
Hi.I will try to explain you what i know:
-swap partition is needed to work some ROM's,combinated with ext partitions.
-you can create swap partition with MiniToolWizard
-in same time, you can create with CWM recovery.
If you need,i will give you a link for MiniTool.
If i helped you,please click "Thank's" button.Have a nice day !!
Does android automatically detect SWAP Partition on SD Card and utilize it automatically?
Yes(i think).

does it? i thought the kernel had to had zram enabeled to allow swap use? i might be wrong though..
Most roms auto-detect, but I'd recommend checking with the devs before partitioning your sd card.
Also, unless you have a class 6 or upwards, it won't really do any good.

Where did u find that info?? Is class 4 mmc that bad????:s
never use a swap partition on any android phones. It does no good. The swap partition are made with your sd card which is more than 10 times slower than your internal memory. When an app is loaded or is sent to swap partition cache memory, it takes time to copy or load the files.
Android already has a system for moving unused apps to cache memory. So, let android do its job.

Just ignore his comment. We need Linux swap. Without it phone gets laggy. I tested it myself.
Download minitool partition wizard home edition. Its free Google it. After installing it and insert ur sdcard via card reader and run the program.it will show ur partitions.
You don't need to uninstall ur system. Just make nandroid backup using recovery. Re format only the ext and swap partition. Based on wat ext u had earlier. All partitions should be primary.
Then from advance recovery restore sd-ext.

@Edu: just search xda for details of swap partition. There have been number of discussions regarding it and all have ended up denying the use of swap partition. These have been comfirmed by much experienced devs, who have been cooking roms for more than 3 years. But still if you dont believe, i would recommend you to google a little and then make the decision.

But sir without it the phone gets very laggy. Means every games run slower. The antutu gpu score gets lowered.
U can easily get 645-630 3D with swap. But without it u can't cross 615. That may seem as little gain but for games it becomes a big issue.

Maybe that is because the extra cache memory are directly transferred to swap memory. Games which require huge cache memory can be of profit. thanks for the screens btw
@op : just take nand back up and back up your sd card. Try the swap partition thing and if it is beneficial, go ahead or else you know what to do

Swap Partition
Hi, i'm new here so i'ld really appreciate anyone who can really help me on this:
I created a swap partition(256mb) on my sd card for my HTC wfs. now after making series of research on swap partition, i found out that swap parttion is necessarily not needed and even if i av to use the 256mb i allocated is too much. Now i need help on how to delete the swap partition without losing my DATA ON MY SDCARD. PLEASE ANYONE WITH THE RIGHT HELP

that's kinda not possible i guess..with mini partition tool you can delete swap or ext3 partition and create ext4 visa versa..but if you wanted only fat32 it isn't possible.
either if you have ext3 or ext4..open mini partiiton tool..delete swap and delete ext3 or ext4(which one you have)
and create partition(ext3 or ext4) from remaining free space...in this your fat32 will be unchanged..
but obviously ext3/4 will be deleted..bt its okay to hv swap partition..256 MB hasn't big space..the whole concept of swap derived frm link2sd i guess..latest int2ext scripts dont need swap..but int2extv2+ need.

Copy all of your data to your pc, then format the card via clockworkmod recovery. It should remove the partition. If not you can try gparted for linux or easeus partition master for windows pal.
If your trying to keep your ext partition but without a swap then copy your data to the pc, then select partition sdcard from clockworkmod recovery. Just don't select a swap and you will be fine
Oh, and make a nandroid backup to back up whats on your ext partition

Thanks a bunch.

You know how to make partitions with 4ext. You cant do it without losing data. Unless you use gparted
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda app-developers app
I recommend to backup your sd card to pc first.
Then backup your sd-ext partition within 4ext if you have a stuff on the partition.
Within 4ext there should be an option to format sd partitions, then repartition with 1gb. Consider increasing it to 1.5gb if you have spare fat32 space and want to install even more apps.
Finally restore sd contents from pc and sd-ext from recovery.
Thanks guys. I thought I might be able to just increase it without doing anything else but obviously can't. Thanks again.

how big can you make the EXT4 partition?
Hi Guys,
I am using a rather old ROM (LeeDroid) and I already increased the EXT 4 to 1Gb.
However, the phone still got full with apps.
Now I bought a bigger card, increased the EXT 4 to 2 GB, but the phone (or ROM) doesn't seem to recognize it...still cant install new apps...
Are there limitations I don't know? Is there a max size of the EXT4?
Thanks for any help...

Theres no actual maximum limit, but it highly recommended that you dont make the ext partition more than 1.5gb
OK, thanks, I will reduce it, but is that why the phone doesnt see the increase?

you can't just swap cards. have you restored restored the ext4 partition from the old card to the new card?
also depends which leedroid rom you are using. you can get much more space by changing hboot and installing the data++ version of his HD port, read the FAQ. this approach requires s-off.
you don't see the increase because a2sd won't report internal memory as "internal + ext". apps get moved to ext automatically. keep them on internal will trick them to sd-ext, i.e. don't manually 'move to sd'
you can use more of the ext space by also moving dalvik to sd-ext, search the leedroid threads on in that FAQ for flashable dalvik to sd zips. there will always be a limit depending on how many apps you install.
i always recommend using an app like 'diskusage' to browse all your partitions, that way you know exactly how they are filling up
Chief,
Thanks for your responses so far... I am thinking to "upgrade" but the LeeDroid 3.3.3 Data ++ ROM is no longer available to download it seems..
Any idea where I might find it?
Thanks again.

When u move apps with app2sd some of data stil remain on phone internal memory. With sdext partition and link2sd all app data are moved. U can partition through recovery. Depend of sd size sdext should be no biger of 256-512mb. Of course widgets steel won't work so be careful what u link. Also when u partitioning all *our data wil be lost so backup your memory card first.

Oki..
I'm Using 8gb card and i have a free space of around 3gb so how much partition would be better and will this partition help me in increasing the ram or making my device faster ??
Can we Change The amount of partition once we have done it before ??
512mb sdext will be just fine. I've heard of some scripts that do the trick with ram but I've didn't try them. With internal memory free u should get faster, more responsable phone, and for gaming u should try some of the roms made specialy for that (gingerDx is very good and superfast, have one or two bugs but developer will fix it very soon). hope it helps
U can't change size of partition without formating all data (I think u need to use killdisk software). But realy u don't need biger swap partition of 512mb. Ofcourse sd card class 8 or 10 is preferable.

CAUTION
you should do it only if your sd gives at least 6mbps read speed.Otherwise your phone will lag even in best roms like a granny driving a lamborgini
