[Q] Hardware or software ??? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've already received a new phone from my insurance but I am still questioning if I could have saved the hundo.
Situation: Dropped my phone directly on the power button. Put my phone back together, phone rebooted and I'm good to go. Pushed the power button later on that day and nothing. Power button worked sometimes that day and very few the next. I didn't really put to much thought into this at the time being as I have never come across any problems with this phone that I couldn't fix with my PC. ( I'll fix it later kind of thing ). Later came and now my power button doesn't do a thing. My phone does reboot occasionally thanks to one of marcusants older ROM's. Ok, I caught the reboot and set timeout to 10 minutes and touch it or use it often. Sprint store wants to " diagnose " my problem. The fkn power button is broke. I'm a moron, shouldn't have root my phone but I've been getting free Internet at my house ever since I did. I left the sprint store without the complimentary diagnosis so my account doesn't have any red flags. ( what exactly would they do to my account ). Put phone under my truck tire and called Asurion, billed the deductible to my companies plan and that was that.
Left wondering: Could I have fixed the power button easily? Was it even the power button that was broke? Would sprint really look into my phones software, and made problems for me? Is there any way to access my phones recovery or download mode without the power button.

most roms had the boot to recovery if not depending on which recovery you had 5.0 had rom manager support you can boot to recovery with that.

Phone stuck ON - Second one.

About three weeks ago my launch Epic 4G Touch got its power button stuck on. In the weeks prior I had had occasional glitches where pressing the power button would turn on the flashlight (an AOKP feature where if you hold the power button from off, it turns on the light), or when pressing it to put it in sleep I'd get the power-off menu. And occasionally it would get worse, where pressing the power button would lead to the entire phone shutting off and restarting after a few seconds, as though I had held the power button down the whole time. Anyway, as I said, it finally reached the point where the button was apparently stuck sending the On signal the entire time. And it was clearly hardware-level, as if I'd pull the battery and put it back in it would INSTANTLY power itself back on.
I took it to the Sprint store, they reviewed it, couldn't fix it, and ordered me a replacement which arrived a few days later. I've had that replacement for about two weeks now without any hardware problems. I did switch to AOKP again, but I've had no issues whatsoever.
Until today, when it progressed through all the above-mentioned symptoms and all the way to stuck ON permanently, in the span of a few hours.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there any logical reason to suspect this could be a fault of the sofware I've installed? I've never heard this symptom before, which makes me think it's extremely unlikely or others would have caused it, plus the power-on from battery implies to me this can't possibly be a software issue. But I want to be sure before I get it replaced yet AGAIN and cause it again, or have the store try to blame my custom ROM (they never said a word last time).
Help?
EDIT: Pretty confident I just confirmed it's a hardware problem. I booted into CWM to try to make a backup so I could flash to stock and confirm it wasn't software. The power button of course didn't work in CWM either. What I hadn't thought of is that I couldn't get back OUT of CWM without the power button. Even a battery pull would put me right back into it. I finally get desperate and yanked the battery and banged the phone on the desk against its power button a few times, then put the battery back in and the phone didn't power itself back on. I then hit the power button, booted to CWM, and managed to use the power button to reboot to system. So that confirms it's hardware to me. So I guess the question shifts to: two phones in a row with this problem, and I've never seen it mentioned before. Am I just incredibly unlucky, or have others experienced this? Second: anyone successfully manage to use a scenario like this to talk them into a different phone? I'm not loving this chain of events, and I'm not loving to hack my phone to get a good stock experience. I'd really love to switch to a Galaxy Nexus. Any tips?
I have the same problem just got it today....Really need to fix this

Seen a couple different threads about power button. Someone took it in to be repaired/replaced only to have it go bad again later. I guess I have gotten lucky, there was a good while that my power button liked to stick and not function properly. It went away one time after I accidentally left my phone in a hot car. I suppose my issue could have been from something sticky being spilled on the phone though.

[Q] Help? Neither of these work?

I'm sure some of you know of me and my recent phone problems of it having a random bootloop every few times I press the Bad Power Button I've had. I found a solution for a while which consisted of 2 apps, One that's a widget that allows me to lock my phone and another which is an app that allows the sensors on my phone to work continuously so that If something moves in front of it it will turn on. Now One day as I sat down i heard a faint vibration and finally noticed my phone fell into a bootloop once again.. I did the normal and tried to make it to Recovery Mode and then Wipe the Cache..After many many tries... More than Normal.. I finally got into Recovery Mode and wiped my Cache..But even after doing so it fell into the bootloop once again shortly after I finished wiping cache..Didn't even get a chance to hit "Reboot Phone". Did the same thing a few more times before giving up and resorting on trying to go into Download mode.. I can't even get into Download mode since When I hold down the VOL + VOL - Buttons and plug in the USB it continues to vibrate.. I have No clue what To do Next. I WOULD love to just return to T-Mobile and receive a replacement But I fear that they might find it is rooted and charge me for the full price of the phone.. Also I'd love to have transfer all of my messages and Other Personal Data off my SD card to my laptop.. Help Please? If there is a way Can i take everything off my SD without having to completely get it out of this bootloop ?

[Q] Any way to disable the power button?

Hey guys,
So I've got an S3 running AOKP at the moment and I was wondering if there was any way to disable the power button. It's been malfunctioning, and causing my phone to reboot constantly. Sometimes even when off it continues to think I'm holding down the power button and cancels the boot process...
Any ideas of a workaround? I'm out of warranty and can't want to pay for repairs at the moment.

Hi,
I am having the exact same issue. Very strange as it decided to do this while checking my email (finger no where near the power button) and I have never had any issues prior to this.
I'm running CWM, CM10.2 and I CANNOT BOOT into recovery (CWM) or ODIN, best I got was the CM loader screen then it reboots.
Even if I disconnect the battery, wait 30 minutes (fully charged) and replace the battery, it attempts to boot itself again. and again and again...
The best videos I've seen involve smacking the phone on the power button side (not going to do that, at least hard) I think it may be a random power button failure. I will be disassembling the phone tonight and trying to open or close the power button contacts and wipe my phone before it goes back....

It's very random for me too. Sometimes it'll work all day then it'll take like an hour and a half to turn back on.
Quick question, as I've heard this from a couple people. Do you use an otter box?
Regardless I'm 90% sure this is hardware related and has nothign to do with software, because all the cases I've heard of this have had different roms, one of which was stock unrooted.
Pretty frustrating. Not sure I'll buy a Samsung again to be honest.

This started gradually happening to me too and I bought both my phone and Otterbox in July 2012 when it came out. I noticed with my family members' S3's that their Otterboxes were different in regards to the power button (it stuck out more) whereas mine hardly stuck out at all. I got a warranty replacement this past July (2013) and the exact issues you described began happening. It started out as random reboots and as of yesterday, I can't get my phone to boot because it thinks I'm holding the power button down (therefore not letting the boot process finish). I took my phone apart, expecting the power button to be an easy swap like it was in the GS2, but no, it's a part of the friggin motherboard. I also am looking for a way to disable the power button. I'd recommend that if you are able to get it to boot even once, that you make sure to backup all your stuff. Fortunately all my pics are backed up since I can't boot my phone anymore, but other files are currently inaccessible. I wonder if anyone knows if some sort of electrical tape or something could prevent the power button signal from transferring so that we would be able to boot our phones?
I had the same power button issue with my Captivate as well... and thought that issue had been looked into. After 14 months of use on my S3, I noticed this issue appeared.
Solution (well not quite): change key layout to disable power button. Re-map volume down as "power, wake". Yes, by doing this, I am losing volume down button. Also, when the phone is off, I still need to press the power button to power it up. My fix of changing the key layout file won't take charge until after the phone boots up.

[Q] Help!!! Only on For seconds?

So today my phone started to power it's self off. When I power on it shows the kernel screen for a few secs then powers off. I can boot into Recovery (CWM) and when I select reboot it does the same. If if I boot in to Download Mode, it only stays on a few secs.
Is it the power button? Any ideas?
I'm running the BMS Kernel and C-Rom 6.6. I have had this same rom and kernel for weeks with no issues.

Interesting, I have not had any issue with the battery. I'll look into it. Any way to test without using another battery?
Anything else it could be?
Using CWM built in key test it seems it is the power button, when I touch the power key it reads as if it is being touched multiple times or heklod down. Any Fix without replacing the button?
Not that I know of I have only seen replacing it fixes it
Ive seen several people report that opening it up and jiggling the button can help, but when it does it is only temporary.

It's fairly easy to replace. You can buy a button off ebay for fairly cheap and look on YouTube to replace it.

I agree it sounds like a stuck power button. My experience with this problem first showed in a captivate of my moms. It was very bizarre tho. On stock ROM it would constantly do the vibrate, cycle, vibrate etc. On a custom ROM however, it has had zero problems with the power button. Maybe try that? Not a sure fire fix, just telling what happened with the Cappy. ☺
If this is power button problem you can try (what i did and worked, but it is your choice and you can damage your phone) drop little of oil in power button and press couple time with out battery in phone.

That's actually fairly dangerous for your device. I would suggest an air duster if you think it's dirty.
I'm actually having the same problem. It just started his morning.
The phone won't boot normally. I get the kernel boot screen, sometimes a Samsung screen, and then it turns off. 2-3 seconds max.
I can get it into download mode, but after 3-4 seconds, it spontaneously shuts off.
Recovery mode (CWM) is completely stable. I can get in, make back ups, perform a key test, etc. When I run a key test, it shows that the power button is a little sensitive, but not crazy. If I jiggle it some (mostly back a little) it registers a key press, even if I'm not fully pressing it. If I do press it fully, sometimes it doesn't register.
If this is really a button issue, why is recovery stable? Even if I put the phone on a flat surface with nothing that could touch the button, the phone still doesn't stay in download mode (it just shuts off.) When I put the phone in recovery, place it on a flat surface, and perform the key test, the phone isn't registering a key touch.
I've tried 3 different batteries, kept the phone plugged in, popped the battery and held the power button to discharge everything, wiped the cache, wiped dalvik cache, and used CWM touch to reboot (and avoid the power button all together.)
The only think I can think of that's maybe different is that gapps was FC'ing more than normal this morning (before the phone crapped out.)
I'm running StockMOD ROM 4.4.2 R2 with the Ktoonsez Kernel for TouchWiz 4.4.2.
EDIT: Also, when it's plugged in, the LED doesn't light up. I'm not sure that it's actually charging. I do have a wall charger, so I can verify that the batteries I'm using are charged.
Try flashing a different rom from recovery to see if it still happens. Also try a factory reset. If you get as close to stock as possible and it still happens it raises the probability thst its hardware.
If you put the battery in and wait a few moments does it turn on by itself?
Band-aid
@DocHoliday77 I messed with the phone a little later tonight and recovery became unstable. I'm convinced it's a power button problem now. I think the internal mechanism gets stuck and that's the issue.
When I put the battery in, the phone does try to boot by itself.
I used the advice in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53915864 and I was able to get up and running again. I opened the phone up, blew some compressed air on the button, tapped the flat side of the button lightly a few times with the end of my screwdriver, and put everything back together. I was able to get back into recovery, and then reboot normally.
I ordered a new power button and I plan on replacing it next week when it gets here, just to be on the safe side.
You guys at xda are life savers!
The booting up on its own after inserting the battery is a classic symptom of the power button going bad. Glad to hear you got it working for now, and that you are ordering a replacement. Everyone ive heard about getting it to work using any number of methods have always found it to only be a temporary solution.
Just a thought, in case it starts up again, maybe remove the plastic piece until you replace the switch. Hopefully that would help prevent it from getting accidentally pressed in your pocket or by bumping it into something. (You could probably still access it with a toothpick or something like that if needed)
I agree it's the power button. I just posted about my little experience on Google+
I tried seriously whacking it on the floor and everything. I wouldn't recommend that but I had no warranty and no funds for repair. Others had said that beating the crap out of it worked so I thought why not lol...
https://plus.google.com/116004961340303353216/posts/ig2ogLeUWJ8
Long story short, my beating it up didn't work but it did wake it up. It falling on the floor however, jarred whatever was stuck and it now works like a charm...good luck

Question Has anyone experienced this issue with the F3?

Yesterday my Poco F3 crashed out of nowhere while I was just texting someone. Now it's stuck in a bootloop where it's constantly rebooting itself, I can only enter fastboot or recovery for like 2 seconds, after that it reboots again.
I was able to get it on later by holding all buttons, but it quickly crashed again and now holding all buttons doesn't work.
I'm running the latest version (as of now)
Edit: No the bootloader is not unlocked, it's fully unmodified.
Has anyone else had this problem?
It's your phone ok now?If it's still broken,I think it's a motherboard issue or maybe a software bug.Anyways,if you are able to boot into recovery by hording power+vol up,try a data wipe

I've had this issue in the past with Samsung phones. The root cause for those was a jammed power button. I had to give it a vigorous shake/jerk to get it back to normal but it would happen again out of nowhere. Depending on how much you actually press the button, there's a very good chance that it could be the reason.
I had the exact same issue yesterday. I had wiped data from the menu and it was fixed. I don’t know why did that happen out of the blue. If any one knows what issue that is, please let me know.
Happened to me today.
I pressed power button quickly for a while. Then, when rebooted in system, i disabled pin lock fast and reboot in recovery.
Wipe dalvik cache seems resolved the problem to me until now.
I'm in Xiaomi.eu 13.0.7
Sounds like your hardware power button is slightly depressed. Even when you're not touching the button, it reboots every few seconds.
Something different happened to me yesterday. It was clearly the power button. If I touch the power button (like for fingerprint unlock), it would identify as power button pressed. So my phone started bootlooping, but not so frequently. And power menu was showing up more frequently.
What I did to fix it was swipe a soft tissue through the side of the phone (where power and vol buttons are placed).
the exact thing happenend to me yesterday and I don´t know how to fix it. i tried to flash twrp but now my device just reboots to fastboot mode about every 5 seconds and i can´t flash anything that takes longer than that. I would be happy if someone knew how to fix this
If u can open the phone get the power button flex disconnect then try again to see if that fix
Hello, i have had the same issue, did you also noticed color leaking when it enters poco logo? like a color lining on the screen which changes location with every reboot? i have submitted my phone to service center, but they are telling me it's motherboard and asking cost which is more than a phone. i was texting someone too when it happened.

What ?
The Poco F3 costs new actually 300 €.
They ask you for more ?
Try a local repair shop, probably a CPU issue a reballing of the CPU should not cost more than 30 to 40 €..
Everything else is a rip off..

They told me the Motherboard needs to be replaced, which is really expensive, i have said no to them and asked for a return of device, i wonder if Motherboard is faulty, how come it enters fastboot mode? I have tried recovery mode as well, it entered once, i flashed xiaomi eu update over existing and it ended with error, now i have tried to boot into recovery couple of times only but it didn't booted, i sent it to service center. I think i should have tried better with recovery or fastboot mode. Xiaomi service centers all over the world is crap and known to impose different faults even if it's not there. That's why i don't believe them.
I still have my Samsung S7 Edge and from time to time, it turns itself off and you can not restart it if you press the power button.
You can boot it into Odin download mode, but nothing else.
Only if you put in the USB cable to load it, it will boot.
Also strange, I'm saying this because you asked why your device boots into fastboot mode, but nothing else
Devices are sometimes very strange and not reasonable the way the work or not.
Hope you get it fixed for reasonable costs.
Good luck buddy .
