vista PC can not recognize apk file - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I do not know how to fix this, here is my problem.
I have a vista desktop, everytime I download an apk file it reads or downloads it as a winzip file.
But if I download the same file in my XP desktop, it corectly downloads it and recognizes it as an apk file. I have 2 vista PC, both have the same problem.
Fortunately I have an old XP PC, and I am using it to download apk file from XDA.
Any suggestions on what maybe the problem will be appreciated.

When you go to download choose save as then choose all files as the type from the drop down which is below where you would name it and make sure it has a .apk extension after the name.

Delete....

To test:
In the PC desktop a file was displayed/read it as an apk file.
I transfered the same file to my vista PC it displayed it as a zip file not an apk file!
I just don't know what is causing this

no idea then unless you somehow set win zip as the default program for .apk files.

Hello Monk4life,
That was a good suggestion. It worked.
This is what I did, I looked at the XP desktop, to verify what program was defaulted to open the apk file. somehow it was set to open with droidexplorer.
I went to my vista desktop, the droid explorer was not installed, the file open as a default was winzip. I installed the droid explorer and wala the file displayed as an apk file. The droid explorer installed an apk shell extension!
thank you so much

You're welcome. Glad I could help.

Sure....what exact files are you downloading? You should be able to tell when you're downloading them that the extension is ".cab"...as long as that's the case, just put the .cab file on your phone and click it to run from there.

in other words. Don't unpack the "cab" files on your computer or phone... just transfer the entire "cab" package to your sd card or phone. Use file explorer (on your phone) to navigate where you have saved the cab files. Select the cab file and the installation will begin
aaand this too just for the noobness haha.. if you've d/l'd a .cab to your pc and have winrar installed on it.. winrar will show the .cab's icon as that little set of books like a .rar file.. they're both archives, but the .cab doesn't need unpacking.. it's like a windows mobile version of a .exe for the pc.. just saying, i did that too at 1st.. a loong time ago.. haha
just copy and paste to your phone storage and you are all set

[Q] Zipped apk files open as directory on on my mac

Sometimes, when I download a zip file of an apk, my mac unzips it into a folder with all the internal files, not as one apk file.
This almost always happens when I download from mediafire. Sometimes from other sites as well.
Any way to get around this without running windows? Or to quickly repackage the folder into an apk?
It seems to do the same thing on my evo when I transfer the zip from my mac.
If I could open mediafire and other such sharing sites on my evo, I would, but they don't run correctly in my browser.
I appreciate the help.

Those site should work fine in your browser, may want to check into that. Anyways, don't open the file after you download. Just rename to a .apk file and you'll be good to go. Macs can screw up zip files like apks and update.zips, so definitely don't open it. Renaming always works for me. Then you can load it on your phone.
If your using Safari it will all ways do that unless you change your settings in preferences in Safari so it wont automatically open files. It is set by default to open any folder when you download hope that helps I have a Mac too

Thanks for the advice. I'll try all of that going forward.

Hm, which version? It should just be an apk which you can download/install via phone. Or download it via desktop and move it to the phone. Perhaps your browser is doing something wrong!?

Please don't install it via cwm! . An apk is nothing more than a normal zip file with a special folder structure/contained files (you already posted the contained files ). So perhaps your browser tried to find the "best" extension and named it *.zip. Just rename it to *.apk again, push it to your phone and try to install it again. Then it should work...

You were right. Thank you very much.
Guess windows was adding the .zip to the end of it after i renamed it .apk..lol Didnt notice that until i took a look at the file in Root Explorer and it was Lmt_v0.9.apk.zip. Just renamed it again to Lmt_v0.9.apk. Astro installed it just fine now...
Thanks again
This thread should have been posted on a microsoft windows forum. Period.

[Q] Open .face files on pc

If you use 7Zip, you don't even have to rename it. It's that cool of a program that it'll let you extract anything that is extractable simply by right clicking on it.
Thanks for the tip.I can extract the files but I was hoping to see immediately the animated clock.Maybe one day there will be a program for PC similar to Facer in order to edit faces for the smartwatch.
Someone once mentioned a program that did exactly that. I can't remember what it's called now, but it was some ambitious name for the software.
Watchface-Studio
Thank you for the suggestion LazyT !!.
rename the .face to .zip then you can extract the info reverse step to make back to a .face and install Note make sure to turn off the "Hide extensions for known file type" in Folder view options..
Or use my program
