[Q] Restoring apps after a cutom rom - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This just seemed weird to me.
Say if all my apps are installed to the SD card. I back them up, and flash a new rom.
When I goto reinstall them, aren't they STILL on the SD card. Does it all get overwritten?
I just don't get what will happen. I don't want to flash, then have all my apps messed up.

Did you try it? If you can use custom roms then you probably use the recovery, so just backup the Nandroid and try it. Or are you saying you did try it but it didn't work?

nono I'm asking, if I restore apps after I flash a custom rom, back to their original locations, the sd card, when the data is STILL there, what happends.
I mean when I flash a rom, the system is wiped, but the actual applications and data of the programs I have, are still on the SD card, does it overwrite them when I try to restore them?

Probably would overwrite then

Ok, solved problem by just moving all my apps back to internal storage.

Phone is really messed up... need help!

I sort of started explaining my issue in the Skyraider Vanilla RC2 thread... but I didn't want to take over that thread for my own issues.
This is what happened-
I tried to install this update that was on the thread, I did a nandroid +ext back up before I did so. When I ran the update it said something about sense 3.1 update so I thought something was a bit wierd, when I turned on my phone, all my apps were rapidly force closing in front of the setup window so I rebooted my phone into recovery and did the nandroid restore. I cleared dalik cache as well, just to make sure things restored smoothly. My phone turned on, but was laggy and and the sd card was read only, it didnt show up when I attached it to my computer... I didn't have the original Vanilla RC2 file on my card, since I initially installed with rom manager, but then switched over to the amon ra recovery image so it was not there.
I rebooted into recovery again, and cleared dalik again, and cache, and then cleared the ext part of my sd card because I thought maybe there was an issue there... Now i turned on my phone my launcher is gone, some of the apps that came with vanilla in the first place are gone along with most of my other apps aside from appbrain for some reason. The phone is so laggy it is almost not even usable as a phone... What should I do?
Buy a new sd card? factory reset? I am totally at a loss..

this is what I would do... go back into recovery and do all wipes. then format the card to your desired partitions. toggle usb and redrop the rom you want back on there and run zip from sdcard. You will have a bone stock system again and have to load all the things you want on there, but at least you will have a normal running phone again. If you happened to have things you wanted to save from the sdcard then the nandroid backup you had saved , well you should have drug it off the sdcard to your computer first. Then after you have a setup with the same rom running that you had your nandroid originally made from should load fine when you reload the backup.
1 save that nandroid backup to your pc
2 wipe completely and reformat your card
3 load the rom zip on the card and run it
4 load the nandroid backup to your sdcard and run it
or do 1-3 and start from scratch... hope this helps

If do have a few backups saved to my computer, (from vanilla 2.5.2) but not the new one. (which is fine)
If I repartition the card, will it go back to being normal again? right now it is read only and will not show up on my computer at all so.. Also when you say wipe, do you mean wipe all data also?
yes wipe all the wipes they recovery you use offers then do a factory wipe THEN go into the format options and reformat your card. It wipes it all but you get a fresh start. then after you drag your rom back onto the sdcard and load it then do your nandroid Its possible your sdcard is hosed but not very likely

Starburst rom epic fail. Help

Hey, so I put starburst on my phone earlier from scratch. I rooted it, did the SD card thing and installed the Tom. So here's the problem, when I went to restore my internal memory using the "kryogenic" (that might be wrong) restore it set my phone right back to before I changed it. So now I have the rom and installer in the recovery menu with all my apps and data. Can I just start the install again now or do I have to wipe the phone first?
Thanks a million
I take it your wanting to use A2SD at least. If I was you I would at least do a factory reset and see if you can install apps to sd. If not just start again.
No, I want the load of internal memory that comes from the starburst rom. I have the installer and rom in the recovery menu now, and my SD card is partitioned too. I was wondering if i could install the rom with my SD card and internal memory still intact. Or if I have to wipe them both first. I dont want to install it to only brick my phone. Thanks a ton.

[Q] Flashing Roms

Since the is no sd card on this phone to save stuff on (i.e. pictures music, etc), when we flash a rom and have to do a wipe , do we lose all of our stuff?
Before you install a custom ROM, make a backup of your current ROM in Recovery. The phone uses built in storage instead of an SD card, but the process for backing up and restoring is the same.

ok do a backup in CWM ? so when I flash after the new rom is on , my folders and files will still be on the built in storage ?
Create a CWM backup and backup the apps you want on titanium. My suggestion for titanium, after you wipe let the market automatically restore your apps and use titanium to restore your data from the apps you want. Most everything like pictures and what's on your internal storage should still be there after wipe, but I would throw them on your laptop or wherever just in case.

The phone does have a "sdcard." Just think of it as a irremovable 16 GB sdcard.
Everything else is the same.
Making a backup is optional, you can do it if you want. Or not do it.
You can always restore yourself back to stock using the stock images provided by Google (google it if you wish to find it).

[Q] Weird!

Hey everyone.
Well, I'm getting back into rooting devices and changing roms etc... So, last night I refreshed myself (it's been a few years) and decided to flash Chameleon OS. With that said, I backed up some OS data by using My Backup. I also did a Nandroid backup, wiped my SD card (full of junk), and performed a system reset, cache wipe, and Dalvik cache wipe. Afterwhich, Chameleon installed fine; however, my SD card now has ALL of the junk back on it again. I still see old references to pictures, apps, and db files. As a result Chameleon, is not running at its best. Can someone tell me how/why my data was restored to my SD card?
Also, the backup I created using My Backup is no longer on my SD card. I re-downloaded to app after flashing Chameleon and attempted to perform a restore of my APN data...needless to say, My Backup reported that it could not find the backup on my SD card. Presumably due to the restoration of the old junk back to my SD card????
Can someone shed on light on this??
Thanks.

[Q] Problem with the partitions on TabPRO?

I own a Galaxy Tab PRO 10.1" Wifi (SM-T520).
I have the stock ROM, rooted and with TWRP. And SDfix...
I have tried fat32 and ext4 on MicroSD, and without MicroSD. No difference.
I cannot boot any custom rom (Stuck at Samsung logo). Sometimes when I try to install a rom, it fails, or reboots TWRP.
I also encountered problem when trying to restore a nandroid. No DATA partition can be written to, restore fails. (after reboot recovery, its no problem to restore)
Angry Birds Epic does not work. It stops at "Loading Levels", and sometimes it fails to start, and says its not installed.
Spotify says that that it cannot be used because it has no storage.
I can access the partitions, but they are not writable. A reboot is getting the internal/external SD to be writabe again.
So, what is the problem with the partitions on TabPRO? or is it the Samsung android rom thats the problem?
Can it be fixed?
Regards,
-Exlo
Try installing FolderMount from the PlayStore. It can detect and fix issues with your partitions. You just need to run it, then reboot. I seem to get issues writing to my data partition after I install TWRP, on my SM-P900. FolderMount fixed it quickly and easily.

FolderMount did find an error, and fixed it, but same result
And it "fixed" the same problem as the SDfix app did.
But, I still made some progress. I managed to install a custom rom without error, and fully booted.
Team Freeze Rom installed fine. The rom is just under 800Mb. So i thought maybe it was some faulty memory sector on my tab.
Then I tried to flash GigaWatts ROM, and it failed. Same with ProPlus Rom.
When restoring my last nandroid, it fails when writing DATA partition.
Then I tried to restore my first nandroid, from "stock" rom, and it restored just fine.
First nandroid was from internal SD, and latest was from external SD. Made me wondering, so switched yet again another MicroSD, took a nandroid to it, and tried to restore. It fails again at DATA.
Then I tried t install GigaWatts ROM from internal SD, instead of external. Works without error.
Sooo.... I can flash custom ROM`s from Internal Memory, and restore from Internal Memory
Not from external SD.
Still, I do get internal/external SD dropouts, and getting "no space left/no memory to install on", which can be "fixed" by a reboot.(Still, it should`t be like this, and are quite annoying.
But, still no luck on getting past the "Loading Levels" on AngryBirds Epic
Where is the root of the problems? Faulty device? Android ROM? TWRP making trouble?
Please guide me if any logs should be provided to find out where the problems is, if i`m not the only one with these problems.

Exlo
You can try flashing a stock ROM via Odin, and start from scratch. Factory Reset, Reroot, install twrp, etc. If you still can't write to /data properly, you may need to find a .PIT file and repartition your internal memory using Odin.
Sent from my SM-P900 using Tapatalk
I have had to reflash stock with Odin 4 times by now, and it has been the same pain every time.
I was hoping not to use re-partition, so I will wait and see if some new info will come by from other users, as I see there are more of the users that struggles with flashing custom rom. (Stuck at samsung logo, installation fails)
So, will hold off for a few days, and if no new info about partitions, rom flashing, low memory, sd cards not mounting correctly, etc, then I will try re-partition...
meanwile, I`ll investigate som more on my own, read overall the internet
Ok, so i have tried and failed, and learned something on the way
Ext SD is useless for flashing rom, nandroid, etc within TWRP. It does not mount partitions correctly.
If I make sure DATA partition is mounted in recovery, and only use Internal SD, everythin flashes, backups and restores just fine
(Mabye an issure with TWRP?)
SDfix, or FolderMount fixes write permissions to Ext SD in rom to use TitaniumBackup, games, downloads, etc.
Hopes this can help others in simular problems.
And thanks to all that have helped on the way
Regards,
-Exlo
