My gf is on 3uk but not allowed to tether, are there any workarounds so she doesn't have to pay the stupid price they want to be able to tether?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
I set my GNEX as a wireless access point for my work laptop as the office broadband connection is quite poor. Although I have the all-you-can-eat data plan, tethering isn't post of the package.
I haven't seen any charges for using my phone as a WAP (so far).
I assume they mean Bluetooth or USB tethering to use the phone as a modem.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Depends on how your carrier chooses to detect tethering, but most root tether apps should work without detection.
Options being:
1) Root and custom ROM, use built-in ICS tethering options
2) Root and install one of many WiFi tether apps
3) Don't root, use something like ClockworkMod Tether and tether over USB.
I should also ask, did she buy the phone from 3uk or unlocked? If the latter, have you tried just using the built-in tethering options in ICS?
The phone is from 3uk, even if your using the phones browser it sometimes comes up saying contract does not allow tethering and won't let u use the browser
That's the main annoyance
I'll root it when i get chance and see if that helps

I'am 3 and have used my phone to tether and have never seen that message or any extra charges. I believe as long as you use it sensible you shouldnt see any additional charges.
I'm on Three and have used my Nexus as a USB modem although I'm only using the £3 unlimited data thing. Used USB for over a gig of data without issue.
I then tried setting my phone as a wireless hotspot and instantly I got the 'modem use is not part of your contract' webpage.
Maybe it's a coincidence, but try using the stock USB modem option in ICS.
Same here. On All You Can Eat...and been tethering for 14 months. Not a peep out of 3uk.
Probs just jinxed myself there. Lol
I get what your saying but the message comes up using just the phones browser, nothing being tethered
Not requesting desktop site or anything
I might root the thing and put aokp on and see if that helps

How far are we from seeing wireless tetherable kernels? Is there a reason we don't see them already? Anything I can do to help? Hope there is a solution soon!
I have no first hand experience (yet) but I thought that Android Wireless Tether worked, you just needed to tell it you were using a Nexus One or some malarkey like that.
You have to set it to ad hoc mode as well...my xoom can't detect it when I do that
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
i have wireless tether working just fine on stock kernel
wireless tether works fine untill you actually use it...te device thats using the connections gets rdirected to a verizon page prompting you to buy the tethering service. I head this was at the kernel level which would make sense, because my DX, OG Droid, and thunderbolt all tether no problems witout the redirct.

No, it does work, as long as you are rooted, set the device to nexus one, and use ad-hoc mode. Any other configuration redirects to verizon.

There was an article about verizon Wanting to charge for using their wireless tethering service... So you either pay or you download an app to do it... It requires a root phone though. I'm with rogers and tethering works well.

Yufice I made a post on general on how to work around it. I meant it when I said it works fine for me. I guess I was the only one that knew of a workaround untill I asked zero to post in development for me and test it out to make sure it wasnt a fluke that I got it working.

This set-up doesnt work on my R800x. To get it to work I have to set the devise to a CDMA device. If I set it to a GSM devise I cant connect to it. So if anyone else is having an issue getting it to work on the r800x try setting it to a CDMA devise.
I have mine set to nexus one and it works I tether daily

I set the latest version 3.0 beta 5 or whatever to device profile droid X(CDMA) and it works just fine. The only caveat is that limits you to WEP encryption so be sure to use mac filtering.
Cheers!

I'm on a verizon r800x rooted and I desperately want to use wi fi tethering....for free!
I've tried every combo with the app "Wifi tether" (the main popular one) with regular phone models and "CDMA" models (supposed to be the ones that work) to no avail!
It always clocks in like .4 kbs of data then stops...and then verizon pop up comes up if i try to access internet through the phone....and computer can't even connect to the hotspot
any tips/advice?

If you please could.....what are the EXACT settings you use?
I really try dozens of different things and it errors or the computer/kindle fire can't connect....
can you go setting by setting what you do to get it to work?
On my Sprint Galaxy Nexus when I first got it the stock wifi tethering setting worked on my stock ICS. Later on I found that it just doesn't work anymore. It will activate and appear to be working and let my laptop connect but the 3G will go away like they have some kind of built in checker.
I did some research and found out that they might have a checking system set up. Well I found out you can still use apps like Foxfi which is great but I was just wondering if there was a stock work around.
They even blocked Foxfi from the market place but you can go to there main site and download it from there.
I was just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this and what kind of solutions do they use.
Right now I am using Foxfi which works perfect but I read that you can use a widget like switch pro and create a toggle to switch the portable wifi hot spot without it going through the check.
I do not want to use USB only prefer hot spot.
So please let me know all of your guys types of solutions.

Well obviously the wifi tether built in is something your supposed to pay for. For stock no, there are no mods.

I thought it was just weird because it worked at first but now it doesn't the stock version. Maybe because my phone was just still getting set up. Foxfi works for me great because I like to have hot spot but I hear PDA Net still works as well for USB Tethering.

Does your Sprint tether work or do you have to use FoxFi?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium App
Just root it and tether it up

It probably worked because they hadn't yet blocked it for you. Then you tried to use it and they did block it.

Have you tried this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1658288
I unlocked the bootloader, booted to TWRP Recovery without flashing it and flashed the tether zip. Keeps your phone stock and unlocks the built in tether. You don't even have to root.
What program do you use to unlock the boot loader or flash the roms?

How in the world did you boot into TWRP without flashing it? That might not be rooted but seems like you have to flash a rom.

Do what everyone else does....
Root it (you really need to to install any decent app).
Install wireless tether from http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Always install the newest one posted (yes it's beta, but it's rock solid stable).
Which program do you use to flash things? Qdl tool or is that old school? I know there is a power house program for the Nexus but I forgot what it is its on my home computer am I out of town.
So you are saying you have to at least flash the recovery but not the from so its still a little more than FoxFi.
What's a quick step by step process because its been a while since I have flashed things. I use to flash my dell streak all the time until I got my Nexus which I love.
Why did you decide to flash? Is not FoxFi good enough and simple enough?

You just have to be rooted and then install wireless tether.
It will prompt you to allow super user access on first start, allow it and tick the "always allow this action" box.
It's bomb proof....been using it for years on numerous different phones....and numerous different carriers (sprint included).
clockworkmod tether is another no root required tether app.

I use Chrome browser on my laptop, and change the user agent to the same as the phone (there's a Chrome app). No problems tethering...
Is that USB or Hot Spot?

I just got my Nexus today, so I apologize if I am way off base here... but why not use the Tethering & Portable Hotspot function that is built into the stock 4.1.1 settings? Just to test it, both my wife's phone and iPad both connected to my tether, and were able to pull down webpages just fine. In case you didn't see it, under More... in the wireless & networks section, you will find Tethering.
If you're on Sprint, flash the tether.zip in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1658288
This will allow you to use the built in tethering without needing to pay for the hotspot feature. You'll need a custom recovery.
I don't pay for any sort of hotspot feature. The FCC ruling forced carriers like Verizon to not charge for it, and fined them over 1 million bucks for doing so. http://www.extremetech.com/electronics/133810-how-everyone-benefits-from-verizons-fcc-mandated-free-tethering
So I am using Straight Talk ATT... and I realize its against all terms of service and so on...
But it still should work. so far I cant get the APP wifi tether to work or FoxFi says its not available for ATT Nexus 4.
What are you guys using? on any carrier
Use the one built into android...
settings > (under wireless & networks category) more > Tethering and Mobile Hotspot
There are also plenty of widgets in the market that will allow you to use a quick toggle.

Try doing it with Open security, change the SSID and if you are using Win 7 make sure you select a profile (home, work, public) it will take a few seconds before it will work even though it is connected and assigned an IP. Also try it on something else, it make be your computer and not the phone.
Also, I find it odd that it only shows up as an Ad-Hoc Network? not an actual AP like normal
Hmm, I'm have the same problem with my Nexus 4. I'm with rogers and I used the sim from my Galaxy Nexus in my Nexus 4. Using the built in tethering Wifi and USB works on my Galaxy Nexus, but the on the Nexus 4, devices can connect but no data is transferred even though data is working.
The only thing I can think of is because I'm using the rogers LTE APN on the N4 but the normal APN on the GN.
Could this be caused by the straight talk APN that I am using? I am having he same type of situation. It connects but no data is transferred.

It is a bit buggy how it works but it does work somehow. Just keep trying!

Add "dun" to your APN type.
Tried adding dun and still not working. Any other ideas?

if you tether LTE plan, will you get LTE speeds on the other connecting phones? or just the original host LTE phone
so anyone else have Straight talk and get this to work?
I had the same problem (with T-Mobile), adding "dun" as mayastig suggested did the trick.
Specifically, the APN type for epc.tmobile.com now reads "default, supl, mss, dun".
Sorry to be off the straight talk topic.. don't know about that but I am on the $30 tmob plan.
I just really need to tether maybe twice a month and I can't see spending $15 on that. My question is, of I do it using fox will tmob find out and ban me or something?

Most of the custom roms have the native hotspot active without the carrier file tracking. Whether or not the carrier 'catches' you and sends you onenof their nice cease or have your plan changed letters is up for grabs. I have tethered successfully on numerous occasions and yet to see one. But, I don't go wild on it. Usually it is when I need to do something at work that requires using my laptop and i am not near an Internet source.
Foxfi is a good substitute. Go their website to get it the carriers have seemed to have blocked it in playstore. Used it while I was stock with no problems.

There isn't any ROM that doesn't have it built in. It's under wireless + networks -≥ More. If its been disabled then download wireless tether for root users or WiFi tether for root users. The wireless version supports Bluetooth.
