[Q] What if we delete some folders from the restricted area? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Frnds,
As long as my knowledge is concerned, whenever we flash any rom on arc, it just changes the system, data, cache, dalvik cache from the restricted (O.S.) area. so if we by mistake delete folders like config, dev or etc or any other folder, can we restore them back? how does it have impact on the phone?

If you delete important files/folders, you can render your phone onto a bootloop on next reboot.
You can restore the system using fastboot (flash the "system" partition), or using flashtools to flash entire firmware.

Wiping before Flashing - some questions

I'm using mero's wiping tool before flashing a new version of Revolution HD.
But I'm wondering if it's really necessary, at least the Easy-Update 1.0 version. What it does is:
Will format(wipe) the following:
* BOOT
* SYSTEM
* CACHE

The 1.3 full wipe doesn't wipe BOOT anymore because it's completely rewritten anyway. Why is it needed with Easy-Update?
About SYSTEM. When flashing a new ROM it says "formatting partitions". I *guess* that's the system partition, so then wiping it wouldn't be necessary?
And the CACHE partition, does it really need to be wiped? I'd think that the OS manages this partition so that when there are cache files from an app that's now gone due to flashing it will delete them.
So if I don't want to loose my DATA partition do I really need to wipe BOOT/SYSTEM/CACHE?
And now the next part of my question...
I guess when flashing so often it's good to once in a while wipe DATA as well. Though I'm a bit reluctant about this as well since Android was created with people in mind who are uninstalling/installing apps every day so DATA shouldn't litter easily.
Anyway, when I decide to wipe it, I want to keep some of the data. For example games or apps that have considerable customization or save data.
For that I use Titanium Backup. Now I'm wondering if I restore some of my apps incl data, that will partly contradict the wiping. So what's the use wiping DATA then, removing data of apps that are gone due to flashing?

Full wipe everything

I wonder how to do a full wipe before flashing new rom. Few methods tried;
1. Factory reset
2. Format ext/ format data/ format system and etc
3. Fastboot erase cache
But after new rom installed, It will automatically revert back to my previous old rom wallpaper. I suspect some old data still there. Please help
Clear everything. Cache,dalvik cache,data,system,factory reset....that should do it
correct aboxot

...yes, and you do it in Recovery...
you can also flash this super wipe script: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1806349&stc=1&d=1363334830
Hi both, yes I'm doing it in recovery. Really clear everything that can be clear + format. But after installing new rom (renovate3, ARHD and ordroid), unfortunately still same. Before doing first reboot, the wallpaper automatically revert back to old/previous rom wallpaper. And new rom even remember my wifi password... zzz
If enabled, your google account will restore your settings, wifi passwords and the Play Store can be set to automatically download your apps
So if your are setting the device up providing your google account, this is the reason.

backup / restore

I want to backup all my apps / settings / customizations.
It took me hours to customise everything. Which backup app would you recommend, guys ?
And, if i want to change my Rom / kernel / ( i won't do that, soon ) after i use all the options - Wipe - Wipe Dalvik Cache, etc, do i erase my backup from the phone SD card, too ? Should i have a backup copy on my PC ?
I'm very happy with the way i customised my phone, so if i have problems, i want to restore the backup without to spend hours of customisation, settings, etc.
Thanks, any advices are welcome.

The simplest way for me is just to use CWM touch and do a full backup. The normal process for loading a new ROM doesn't erase your sdcard. However, I *do* pull it over to my PC, just in case. Now, the phone needs to be unlocked in order to flash CWM, and the process of unlocking it will erase everything, so if you haven't unlocked your bootloader already, you'll have to look in to some other android app backup solutions. I don't personally use any (because I've been unlocked from the start) but I've heard of people using Titanium backup.

As the user above already wrote, use your recovery (I prefer TWRP but Clockworkmod is just as fine) to perform a full backup = a complete "image" of your device, so you can restore everything on your phone.

Nothing will ever wipe your SD Card except if you do it yourself or if you unlock/lock the bootloader. (Right?) System, data, cache, boot, dalvik cache - won't ever touch your SD Card
Should i have a backup copy on my PC ?

It's always a very good idea

Again, the easiest way is to perform a full backup using your recovery. The user above did also mention the app Titanium Backup, and I think it's one of the best apps out there. TOTALLY worth its money and it makes flashing new ROMS so much easier, as you can make an update.zip file containing all of your apps + data. You could say that 6$ is a lot of money for one app, but it's definitely worth it!
Good luck

[Q] How does the file system work from a recovery standpoint?

So, this is my firsts phone without removable storage, and I'm used to having SDCard, EXT_SDCard, etc.
In recovery, I'm only seeing one location for files. Yes, my downloads are there, etc.. pictures, music, etc.
Can I keep that stuff, while erasing what's needed to completely wipe the system partition, etc. so I can install a new ROM? Obviously, I can format /system, etc., but is that enough with the One?
Curious what people steps are for doing a clean wipe before installing a new ROM.
Yes, I still want to keep the partition with my Pics, Music, etc.
Hopefully this is possible..
Thanks all!

Basically when no ext storage is detected wiping the system wont delete anything inside /data/media/ ( the real location of your data, i think /sdcard is just a link to /data/media). Unless you actually ask it too.
In twrp you can just use the standard wipe option and it will wipe what you need and leave your stuff intact.

So just the "Factory Wipe/Reset" should be good enough? I can probably format system too and be safe. I just want to be thorough while making sure my stuff is still there.
Thanks for the input.

what option deletes my android folder in TWRP recovery?

hey guys its been kinda long since i last flashed but i was changing my rom to magio and as a usual procedure i selected dalvik cache,cache,system,android_secure,and data to wipe...after the wipe installed rom and fired up my phone...then was restoring a game..after i restored,to my horror i saw that my "Android" folder(which keeps obb and data) was completely wiped
i have no idea how that happened as i never selected sd_card wipe
so does the data wipe option also delete the Android folder?
i remember clearly that in the old days i did select data wipe/factory reset in recovery but it didn't remove my Android folder
Using latest TWRP 2.6.3.0 btw

wait really????so every time i flash a new rom i will have to copy all the 11 gb data and obb of my apps back to my phone????lol
but thats sounds kinda off as i never had to do it before
You can backup for apps with Titanium Backup! Music and pictures will stay on phone..Cause when you are flashing new roms apps will stop working in almost every case..,
My obb files were NEVER deleted after wiping system from recovery..
