hey guys its been kinda long since i last flashed but i was changing my rom to magio and as a usual procedure i selected dalvik cache,cache,system,android_secure,and data to wipe...after the wipe installed rom and fired up my phone...then was restoring a game..after i restored,to my horror i saw that my "Android" folder(which keeps obb and data) was completely wiped
i have no idea how that happened as i never selected sd_card wipe
so does the data wipe option also delete the Android folder?
i remember clearly that in the old days i did select data wipe/factory reset in recovery but it didn't remove my Android folder
Using latest TWRP 2.6.3.0 btw

wait really????so every time i flash a new rom i will have to copy all the 11 gb data and obb of my apps back to my phone????lol
but thats sounds kinda off as i never had to do it before
You can backup for apps with Titanium Backup! Music and pictures will stay on phone..Cause when you are flashing new roms apps will stop working in almost every case..,
My obb files were NEVER deleted after wiping system from recovery..

Guys,
I've just backed up my DCIM folder and music along with titanium backups for the apps I want to keep.
Basically I've uninstalled loads of rubbish I had on my phone and want to start a complete fresh installing Rascarlo ROM.
Can I do something that will wipe EVERYTHING apart from Clockwork recovery and the .zip files I need to flash Rascarlo ROM.???
Why don't you push them with adb? Is the proper way to refresh your phone, terminal rulez.
Lock and unlock boot loader will wipe everything on your phone (except Rom and recovery).
Swype'ed on my CM10 Galaxy Nexus
just wipe using cwm format system cache data
I have the latest ROM Manager (5.0.1.5) and the latest CWM (5.8.4.9) installed and am a little confused about backing and restoring. When I used RM/CWM on my old EVO 4G it was very straight forward but doesn't seem to be the case with my new GS3.
When I use RM to backup my current ROM, it seems to be successful but doesn't show up in the list of backups when I go to RM and click on "Manage and Restore Backups". However, if I go into Recovery I can find it by navigating to backup and restore. I'm assuming the problem is that RM automatically backs up to my external SDCard while RM only reads from the internal SDCard. I was able to manually backup to the internal SDCard from Recovery and it shows up in the list in RM but the date & time are all messed up (not to mention I can't rename it in Recovery).
I suppose it's not impossible to use but it seems "messy" to me. How is everyone dealing with this?
---
Also how do you manage the backups via Recovery? I now have 6 backups that I made via RM which ended up in the external SDCard but I can't seem to delete them in Recovery. I'm also not sure where they are when I browse in FTP as there is nothing under the clockworkmod directory.
CWM is fastly becoming old school, do some searching for installing TWRP using goomanager. It is an awesome recovery tool with many, many new features not found in CWM.

Twrp is good for backups and being able to run commands but is definatly missing some features.ROM manager has gone to hell but there is an option in settings for using external storage. Ur backups are in clockworkmod/backups. And you can rename ur backups qhile in cwm recovery w/ this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646108. And if ur gna use twrp, get it from their site and flash in mobile odin. Goo manager sucks and its interface is confusing. Takes an hour to find **** in there. An accident waiting to happen
Thanks for the recommendation. So far so good.

I see what it is. I was accessing it through the app, FTP Server and that app can only read internal SDcard, where the backups are not located.
Thanks for your help.
I'm now all TWRP'ed up and so far it is nice.

Under "Wipe" in TWRP I see Cache, Dalvik Cache, Factory Reset, System, External Storage, Internal Storage and Format Data.
Normally when I flash a new ROM with CWM I would wipe data, cache & dalvik cache. With TWP, when I click on Format Data, it says this wipes all media, including backups & removes encryption. Is that right? Or do I wipe System, which says "This will wipe your ROM"? Thanks.
I am not a total noob to this, as I used to root/ROM the OG Nook Color to death, but I have a few questions on what to do when going from CM 10.1 M1 to the newest M2.
On the Nook, I could put files onto the SD card for flashing after I wiped the device in order to install a new ROM. However, on the Nexus there is no such option. I downloaded goo manager and got the latest GAPPS and M2 zip, but if I wipe the device prior to flashing the latest M2, won't these be wiped also? I guess I'm asking what is the best solution for updating ROMS since I don't have the benefit of loading files to an external SD card.
Along the same lines, I also made a NAND backup of the current ROM and a titanium backup of the apps+data. All of these files reside on the phone itself, so should I move them to the computer first, wipe the device then load them back on for flashing?
Thanks a ton.

There is no such need mate! When you root your phone, you get "an image of your internal memory" - forgot the word for it xD
So, when you do a "wipe" in recovery (TWRP or CWM) you do a factory reset - wipe system(on twrp) - wipe cache - wipe dalvik - and it just delets the current ROM you have, all your files remain on the internal memory, togeather with the titanium backup - zip files you just flashed and so on ... Hope you understand what I meant
Wow, I didn't know that it left files after doing a factory wipe in TWRP. So you're saying I can wipe system, cache, and dalvik cache, but my m2 zip, Gapps zip, nandroid backup zip and titanium backup files will still be there?
What about my wifi and bluetooth settings? do I need to do those over again or are they "saved" somewhere

If they are synced with your google account, they will restore back!
When wiping - do cache - dalvik cache- factory reset - system ... DON'T wipe anything else, especially internal storage! THAT will wipe everything off ...
I don't know how to check if they are synced. I know I have contacts calendar, etc synced. How can I tell if wifi settings and bluetooth are synced?
Go to backup & reset in settings and check there!
ok, thank you! it is checked, so I guess i'm good to go.
I will wipe "SYSTEM" in TWRP - which wipes the ROM only. I will not do a factory reset in twrp.
Doom, you've been a ton of help!
christ, i tried to install m2 and in says "FAILED"

That's what I'm guessing. now my PC won't recognize the nexus...as if the device drivers won't work on my PC. ugh.
after the restore, i'll see if I can get my PC to recognize the device when I plug it in. This is odd.
I ALWAYS download this via PC - then send 'em on my GNexus and then flash aterwards ...
Thanks doom, I am restored to my old M1 rom, but my PC is not recognizing the device, so I can't move the downloaded m2 zip to it just yet. I've got to figure out what is going on with device recognition before trying this again.
My Nexus recognizes that it is connected to a PC as a USB device and I can hear the bleep on my PC that it is connected, but I cannot see the device in windows explorer.Consequently, I cannot move the zip to the device if I cannot "see" it.
Do you get the icon in your comp's status bar that it's connected? Android debugging enabled in settings?
Its actually working now. I launched nexus root toolkit to recheck the drivers and now it magically appears in windows explorer...go figure.
should I also install the latest GAPPS after flashing M2? I was using late 2012 Gapps, but now there is one from 3/1/2013 or will that screw up something?
I don't really know ... Didn't try those out! Neither did I try M2 .. xD
Thanks doom! Flashed the M2 zip and newest 3/1/13 Gapps. No need to set up the phone all over again! I am now on M2 (4.2.2).
So here's the thing: I made a TWRP backup of my 16GB nexus before I returned it yesterday (multitouch issues, dead pixels) but see now that people are reporting an OTA update that fixes the multitouch issue. I would rather not restore that backup since it is the JSS15J system, so is there a way I can get the data of at least a few apps and restore them individually somehow?
Thanks!

Ok, can it read the data in the TWRP folder? I have used TB a lot in the past but didn't think it might be able to use the TWRP data.
If it's not compressed (I never do), TiBu can do it perfectly.
In Titanium backup pro in it's menu is the option to 'extract from nandroid backup' .
Did it just last week, so I know the current version works.

Use Nandroid Backup Manager. It's free.
It can restore apps and/or data, SMS messages, Call logs and more from your nandroid backup. It can also decompress the backup if it's compressed.
Advance Restore and just click restore data only on twrp

I don't see any advanced menu in TWRP (Looks like all or nothing)?
Or, did you mean that Nandroid Manager has an advanced menu?

Of course. TWRP has no advanced backup&restore features because it doesn't need them: you will be prompted before each backup&restore action about the partitions.
For data of just single apps use better Titanium Backup. It can extract them from your nandroid backups

I think some of the gapps data is flashed to system, so it won't be able to completely restore it but after flashing gapps, you should be able to extract google apps with data intact from TWRP backup

Exactly what I do.
marsmallow 6 will update apps + data from your google account. Not sure it's fully implemented yet but it's supposed to work. I've tried it yesterday with a Mm6.0.1 on nexus 7 2013 and many apps were already configured. Not all of them. Going from MM6 to MM6.0.1 might complicate it so maybe it's better to restore with google and do a little work by yourself, to make sure. I gave up on those restore apps. It also give you the opportunity to do a clean up

I'm sure somebody is already aware of this;just sharing coz this awed me![emoji33]
You need to ..extract/restore individual data files from nandroid backup?
Restore data to an app when switching between ROMs or OS versions?
Well TWRP IS THE ONLY THING YOU NEED! And a PC of course.
Bless the Devs[emoji7][emoji28]
Forget Nan managers, tar.extractors & the insanely complex Bash terminal commands
1. Go to File manager on TWRP recovery, it can read the system data i.e. data/data/ file (while your other file managers can, only data files on SD or ext.SD)
2.Go to data/data and locate the data folder of the app you wish to extract; will be in the format 'com.app name'
3.Push 'Select folder' tab on the screen; it gives you option to COPY the file
4.Move up & paste the data/data file on your readable memmory: sd/ext.SD
And that's it!! Just connect to the PC & pull the file & there u have: your APP DATA FILE!
I was tired using zip extractors, changing file names & struggling with command prompts; then found this[emoji4]
Hope it helps[emoji106]

And believe me, I could repack the data into my new ROM just like that!
Not sure if this messes up with your system but I'm going great so far.
So you Upgraded to a higher OS and find some of your apps to be crashing on your new ROM & have a nandroid of your stock:
You are going to switch data files between stock & custom ROM!
1.Flash the Stock ROM & copy app data from the system files to readable memory, as mentioned above, just add a letter & Rename the copy(which again you can do with TWRP!) so that TWRP may not confuse with the new folder
2.Flash the new ROM, uninstall the app that crashes & install the compatible version from the store
3.Allow storage permission from settings; open the app & perform some action so that a storage directory is created,if not already, in the system storage
4.Boot to TWRP recovery in the new ROM , so now you have the data/data folder of the new app you just installed(which is empty) as well as the data/data folder from your stock ROM on your SD/Ext.SD
5. You know were this is going[emoji16] Delete the data/data folder on your running ROM & MOVE(again with TWRP only!) the one from SD ,after restoring its original name, to the data folder from were you just deleted the other.
6.Wipe Dalvik/caches & reboot
7. Other than receiving a pop up that there may be some trouble with your android system, on startup, everything works just fine for me & the App is fully restored!![emoji7]
Didn't even use a PC!!
Such a tool TWRP is[emoji7][emoji120][emoji120][emoji120]
Forgive me, but try this at your own risk, coz as a newbie Im completely unaware of the consequences
Hope this helps somebody[emoji4]

I don't understand this step. I go to file manager, then navigate to /external_sd/TWRP/BACKUPS/... and there are files like data.f2fs.win009. Now what?
I know I saw this process in a recent thread but I've misplaced it. If anyone can point me to it, I would be grateful.
I want to clean flash CM 13 on my OP3.
From what I remember, I'm supposed to store the CM 13 zip file and gapps file in the SD Card folder. Is that truly correct? The OP3 doesn't have an SD Card though I did find a folder.
If I do a factory reset and wipe everything, won't that folder also get wiped? Then how would I install the ROM from the phone?
Sorry, I know this is a straightforward process for many of you, and dirty flashing is easy. But I think a clean flash is better and I'd rather not guess and end up with a bricked phone I have to fuss with.
Again, I know this exact process is in a thread somewhere but I can't find it.
the phone storage is /sdcard/
u can use something like ES File Explorer and create a folder called CM13 or whatever u want
u do have ur bootloader unlocked and twrp installed, correct?
yes u will just the get cm zip file and put it in a folder (ex. /sdcard/CM13/)
i put the gapps in the same folder
create a nandroid backup
wipe/advance wipe - wipe caches/data/system !!!!Do NOT WIPE - INTERNAL STORAGE OR OTG!!!
then flash cm zip and gapps
Hi, thank you. Yes, bootloader unlocked, twrp installed and I've done it in the past on a different phone but couldn't sort out clean flashing from dirty flashing. I've done it correctly in the past, and it's also gone very wrong for me. I think I mistakenly wiped internal storage once and that was a disaster.
Somewhere I've also read about a factory reset through trwp.
I don't need to do that, or wiping caches/data/system is the same thing?
.

If you wipe internal storage, you will lose the zips for your ROM and GAPPS. You can connect your device and have it recognized on your PC from within TWRP if you do accidentally wipe your internal storage.
Factory reset doesn't wipe the system partition as that would remove your OS. Most Roms will wipe your system partition before it installs itself so generally you don't have to wipe the system partition manually, but it's good practice.
Clean flash = wipe dalvik, cache, data; then install ROM (which will wipe system before it installs, or manually wipe system before the ROM install for good measure).
Dirty flash = flash ROM, then wipe dalvik and cache. The only time you should do this if the ROM you're looking to flash says it can be done (ie. CM nightlies).
