50GB Cloud Storage for Free! (box.com) - Desire General

This is great news that could end the mirroring/uploading issue for ROM developers!
Go here:
http://box.com
and install the Android app and you get 50GB lifetime storage for free!
Source:
http://www.theverge.com/2012/2/23/2819690/box-50gb-free-storage-android-deal
Enjoy.

I've tried it. It still works..

Some tips:
For complete SD Card sync to box.com:
download (free) app FolderSync Lite
To access the box.com on OSX via WebDav:
In Finder, press cmd+K and type:
https://www.box.com/dav
And for PC users (mapping network drive):
http://www.webosnation.com/map-box-net-network-drive-your-computer

Whilst this is a great offer I'm finding it does not integrate quite as well as Dropbox does. Drop box seems to do a better job of sync'ing across multiple platforms (I use Android handset and tablet, Ubuntu and win7 on a daily basis) especially with things like recently taken photos. I would also say from my perspective Drop box has a better user interface especially in the desktop environment.
For the moment I'm going to run both using the Box option for my longer term backed up storage and Dropbox for the everyday transferring files around.

what's the file upload image?
i got the 50GB from box.com when the HP Touchpad's came out and I was sure the max upload was crazy like 100MB - which put me right off.
Minus.com seemed a better deal - quickly got up to 50GB storage with them and the upload limits are bit more generours

Max upload like 100MB is normal. Microsoft skydrive have the same limitations and some other clouds also.

not sure why I wrote file size image when i meant limit lol
minus says:
Is there a maximum file size I can upload?
The size limit currently is 2 GB per file with unlimited uploads and 10 GB of free space to start.
if anyone wants to join here's my invitation link: http://min.us/rdiBKVs
I get nothing (as I have the max of 50GB already) but you get an extra 1GB

I upload via ES File Explorer and don't seem to have any limits
In ES File Explorer select "net" and add server...
Enjoy.

2 GB file size limit sounds nice

Brilliant hint on using esfile explorer. Was annoying me having so much space and no way of uploading folders

Thanks for the hint. I'll try with file expert and see if that works too. File explorer kept telling me I wasn't rooted and wouldn't let me access the root so I swapped.

Just signed up, thanks 4 the info.

Thank you very much!

[GUIDE] Get 50GB FREE storage with Box.com on any device [until Dec 31, 2011]

First off, I'd just like to mention that I did not write this OP. I saw it over in the: xda Android Development and Hacking > Android Apps and Games section originally posted by K Dotty. All credit for this hack/mod shoud go to (her?).
I just wanted to post it up here so that everyone in our wonderful SGSII section can take advantage of this awesome promotion before it's over. I did this myself and can confirm that it's: quick, painless and works flawlessly. Reboots and all; this whole process took me about 5-6 minutes. Hope this works for all of you, and if you need help or have a question about this please do just ask (but search the thread first).
*Random Side Note*
It does mention a backup in K Dotty's post, but I just thought I'd take one more quick opportunity to remind everyone to MAKE A BACKUP of your build.prop before you begin any of this. And in case you're wondering, I used a root explorer to edit mine (ES File Explorer to be exact).
--------------------------------------------------
OP:
I've seen this guide in various places but i thought it would be most useful in here. I have searched to see if anyone has posted this here but found nothing.
Basically Box.net are offering 50GB online storage (normally 5GB) to anyone with an LG or Xperia phone. If you dont have any of these phones you can still benifit from this offer by quickly editing your build.prop.
What you need:
- Rooted phone
- A way to edit your build.prop - build.prop editor, root explorer, etc.
- box.com app
First open your build.prop using yor prefered method and edit these two lines to look like this (MAKE A BACKUP FIRST):
ro.product.manufacturer=LGE
ro.product.model=VS910 4G
Save, reboot.
Open the box app and register for a new account and you should receive a 50GB account.
This offer ends on the 31st of december so make the most of it.
Dont forget to restore your original build.prop after.
Post a link to this thread wherever you can so everybody can make the most of this offer!!
Hmm thanks, this worked for me no problem. Can't say no to 50gb.

Hey 50gigs is 50gigs. Definitely more than enough for collaborating on projects and trivial file storage. I mean it's no HD replacement, but it's free and imo better than Dropbox or SugarSync. I think of it like an extra large flash drive that I never have to remember to grab on my way out (or forget it and leave it somewhere, lol).
Tried to edit build prop, but doesn't save. What can i do to fix that?

Use ES file manager and go into your setting/preferences and scroll all the way down and just click on the options to "open as writable" it'll ask you for root permission and presto.
I had that same problem with astro and root explorer along with ES until I saw that option.

7.Put in the 50gig Box account you made, login and name the drive.

Hey, I'm glad everyone else is pretty stoked about this also. You can never have too much storage (I was on the same page as AllGamer and used multiple accounts, lol). I'm glad that I could share this with everyone.
Also, I doubt that box.net will "get wise" to this. If they are not as popular as other big cloud services (ie. sugarsync and dropbox), and they're using a promotion like this to boost business. They we're probably hoping for/expecting a large number of new users. So lets give 'em what they're lookin' for!
Wow. That was easy. Much appreciated.

Notes:
Clients 1.3.5 and earlier had an auto-update bug. Please install this version so that your client will stay up to date!
The photo import feature is not available on Mac 10.4 and Linux.
For Android devices, it's best to use "Connect as Disk Drive". HTC Sync will not work.
To import from iPhone, make sure to unlock your phone and enter your passcode before importing, otherwise it will claim to find no photos.
If importing from your iPhone on Mac gives an import error, try hard resetting it--hold down the power and the home button for 5 seconds. This will reboot the phone; it shouldn't change your settings or delete data.
On Windows, this feature relies on Autoplay. Please enable Autoplay to use this feature if you have disabled it.
On XP and Vista, it relies on the Windows Image Acquisition Service. If this service is not started, please start the service and reinstall Dropbox to use this feature. On WIndows Server, you may have to install the Desktop Experience feature.
On Windows 7, newer devices that rely on Device Stage (in the Control Panel) will not show Dropbox as an import option until you select "Change Program" for the default.
The Galaxy Nexus takes a lot of time to connect on OS X because it likes to pretend that every image on the device is a photograph. We now estimate how long it's going to take and show you that in the progress bar but it's usually in the order of minutes. We're working to see if this can be improved.
As usual, we strongly recommend making a backup of your Dropbox before upgrading to this build as we'll need a few weeks to be certain of its stability. We will rapidly release new builds as necessary to snipe the most common issues as they arise."

Thansk mate. Using the latest version now. Hope to get some more free space...
Note that only auto upload gives you free space. Manual selecting files no matter how big they are even from camera folder will not give you bonus space.
Easily solved though. Turn on autoupload in dropbox client (its limited to 25mb per file for GSM uploads but can be changed to unlimited if you so desire and your plan covers it) and take some 3-5 minute videos with 1080p resolution. Those quickly fill requirements and can be deleted after.

Fastest way (tip i saw on g+) is to use beta desktop client provided in first post with those blank videos (you can put any avi or mp4 video on usb as well as long as it is in the dcim/camera foler and has not been uploaded to dropbox before and note 'renaming does not work') and use autorun dropbox import function.
must connect in mass storage mode or just plug microsd card ( usb reader and external hard drive does work as long as you keep proper folder structure dcim/camera). allow import to complete then in dropbox client 'pause syncing'. go to dropbox 'camera uploads' folder and delete files. again in dropbox client 'resume syncing' and thats it.
you just maxed 5GB without wasting all that time and bandwith!
note:you must have at least 4.5GB in pics and videos plus that one initial picture
another note: your maximum in pics and videos you want to import can not be greater than total dropbox ammount available to you or it will fail to sync properly. so best keep it around 5 just in case.

technically yes. well for as long as they are in business or they decide to take it away lol.

Just small correction and explanation on this.
You can put 5GB of videos right away because you initially have 2GB at least and as long as you have at least largest individual file size free in the account you'll be fine. Cause it will be auto bumped by 500MB increments.
My note in one of the posts above referred to people with for example 4gb free trying to sync 17gb i read somewhere.

Got my extra 5GB already. Swhueet. My only worry is if Dropbox catch on; which they will. What will they do about it? Could they track who has been given large amounts of space, but not made any real difference in space in their online accounts? Could easily take the space back off us.

@theos0o best known for modding Skype from sgs forum has found a way to patch dropbox client into thinking we have regular htc phone, giving us aditional 3gb free for a year here
Last chance to get 5GB. New beta just came out that takes effect today, that lowers 5GB to 3GB.
"Yo ho ho, and a bottle of code!
We wanted to say a special thanks to all of our early beta users! Thanks to your feedback, we have been able to find and fix a bunch of bugs.
Starting today, new users of Camera Upload will get 500 MB after their first successful import. Users can also receive up to a total of 3 GB additional free space for photos and videos automatically uploaded via the desktop or mobile apps.
Forum build users who tested Camera Upload before today, either on the desktop or Android, will keep any additional storage space they received for trying the beta version, and will still be able to earn up to 5 GB."
thanks for the info bro! im going to try the avi trick right now hopefully its not to late
@theos0o strikes again!
Now bringing 23GB free for 2 years. Deal with dropbox and new HTC devices.

Box.net giving 50GB of storage to all Android users for next month

For anyone that hasn't been able to get in on the 50GB giveaways from Box.net, they are now offering anyone who downloads their Android app and signs up in the next month 50GBs of cloud storage.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/02/23/box-for-android-receives-update-offers-all-android-users-50gb-of-free-cloud-storage/
The only drawback is that uploads are limited to 100MB.

Thanks Brian, it worked.
Worked for me. Thanks!
Worked for me as well! 50gb lifetime on my account
Good looking out, thanks!
Nice find... thank you!
just got mine too, now what to do with all this space, can i backup my entire phone to it somehow?
Thank you very much for the info, I will take an extra 50 GB any time +1
very nice!!!
Good looking out!
The 100MB file size limit is very disappointing and I hope they change it in the near future. What's stunning is that the earlier version of this promotion, with the HP TouchPad for example, 50GB accounts also came with a 1GB file size limit. I can confirm this because I have since commandeered my friend's account with those limits.
There was also a way to to get 50GB under the LG Android promotion (we just edited build.prop, which is what the box.net app checked), but that too came with the 100MB limit.
It's great to have 50GB lifetime storage for free, but I really wish they upped the limit to >300MB. I find myself using my Dropbox (24GB storage, 300MB limit via mobile, unlimited file size via desktop). Write to BOX and ask for bigger limit, or post in their forums!
Sweet i'll take 50, thank you
Phonearena pointed me in that direction but still got it. Good lookn out

Too bad they want you to pay to use their file sync program. Guess I'll be sticking with dropbox. Thanks for the link though.

Yes, I appreciate 50GB free storage, but without sync it is pretty useless. The point for me of having cloud storage is to backup my computer and have access to all my files in the cloud from my portable devices and to keep the files in sync from all these devices. I certainly don't need 50GB of storage to upload a few files from my phone. So will keep using dropbox, until I can figure away to sync.
Hate to sound ungrateful, it just is not that useful at this point.

File Sharing Site for Android

Anyone know any file sharing site or app expect 4Shared (Was working fine now I can't see anything after I upload my files) or drop box ? Thanks in advance.

Tried Box but it have cap of 100Mb
Any trick how to upload Files from Stock browser ?
Try dropbox, files uploaded via desktop have no limit, files uploaded via the website have a 300MB limit
Use the following link to receive and additional 250MB storage space (once you install the desktop client) free on top of the 2GB you'll get anyway

If you use ubuntu, try ubuntu one it offers 5 Gb for free.
Check Sugarsync. It is even more feature-rich than Dropbox. and it's android client has a real sync option. it can sync your selected files in background just like PC clients. so there is no need to download your files everytime you need them.Dropbox client is running all the time in background but it doesn't sync anything. just consume battery and cpu juice for nothing.
If you dont need the auto sync ability, i suggest one of box,Drop Box or Sugarsync. All these three is supported by "ES file Explorer". which lets you manage them just as easy as any local storage on your handset. and you wont need any power consumer client.
I myself use sugarsync for it's nice client, and BOX on ES for its huge free 50GB storage.
