[Q] Xplay exclusives on custom rom - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everybody, lately, I'm wanting to get rid of Sony themes and annoying apps, and install a Stock ICS.
But as an avid FIFA 12 player, but I'm worried if this game will work, because it's exclusive for Xperia Play.
So, will it work?

If you go completely AOSP, and use a rom with NO Sony (Ericcson) material you will lose the touchpads and may also lose the directional buttons and the 4 shapes buttons as they are specific to the Sony software. You should still be able to use the touch screen with the game but that is if it will even load. I believe there are Stock Gingerbread roms with some Sony stuff left in it so that it will still use the full touchpads and game controller, if I am wrong someone please correct me but from what I have read this is what I found no Sony specific software isntalled no game controller. Like CM7 no touchpads or game controller and if there is support its only on a limited number of games like Shadowgun, etc.

Thanks for the answer!
So, I have to install a Rom based on Sony, uninstall all crap, based on a list of safe removal it can be found on this forum, and then keep hours customizing it to look like the original thing...
Damn!

For speed and ease of use this is what I do. I use titanium to backup all my apps. Then I do a Custom Recovery backup before trying a new ROM. Then wipe and flash teh new ROM, then once its all booted up, I use titanium to remove the system apps, then restore the apps you have backed up you want to restore. I did a full blank slate on my phone 2 weeks ago an what used to take hours took about 30 minutes. But yeah it sucks, this method just makes it suck a little less. And when you restore from Titanium it will at least restore all your apps data. so like I restored my GO launcher and all my wallpapers and widgets were restored as well.

[Q] Games no compatible with ICS??

Is there some games that doesn't work with ICS? There are a few games that I bought that either freeze my phone(GTA3) or the game auto closes as soon as it gets into the actual game(Dungeon Defenders)
Also another think i just remembered. In TrialX2(Gas*I think*) and Blood and Glory(Dodge right) the O button brings up a option menu.
Anyone know?? I just spent like 30$ on games and some aren't working at all.

If you're asking if some games just don't work correctly on ICS like they should, then yes.
If circle is bringing up the options menu, that means that game isn't supporting the Xperia's gamepad, so it's trying to go "back" instead.

Well its Trial Xtreme 2 SE Xperia Play is the name of the game on the market.
Also they worked on 2.2.3(2.3.3?) whatever it ships with.
Google Play Store has that app isn't even compatible with my ICS Xperia Play, so maybe that tells you something. Not really sure though.
Being ICS is BETA.
Yes, there will be problems.
Go back to gingerbread if you want games.

[Q] ICS build .562 Temple run and other issues

First of all my Xperia Arc S is not unlock or rooted, its completely stock no modifications made upgraded thru Sony PC Companion.
anyone experience some issues on temple run when you swipe to side to side sometimes the character jumps or slides instead of turning left or right?
and another issue for me is xperia home launcher it doesnt save my settings to arrange my drawer in alphabetical order it always return to own order after opening some apps like playstore?
any solution guys?
need your help badly..
hmm,i think i read somewhere that some games arent fully compatible with ics and there will be problems with the touch screen.
yea my arc s is GB and temple run is running smooth. Then after i get ICS its not recognizing touch properly
It's appears when i update wif ics 4.0
When I downgraded this problems havn't appear.
This is a known issue with Temple Run and ICS on some devices including ours. Plenty of comments on this on Google Play so let's hope they fix it soon.
Congratulations, you are the 100th person to ask this!
It is an ICS bug, happens in most of the games. Sony's fault.
I am not happy with Sony's ICS. I actually run Achotjan's SEMC Debrand Engine and it's awesome. I recommended it.
Downgrade to GB is the best solution for this case!
I think so
Temple run is not fully compatible with the ICS.

It's not Sony's fault. I've experienced this problem on CM9 too, which is not based on anything from Sony(kernel, firmware, etc.)
I just downloaded Gravity Project and it has the same problems as Temple Run. Completely unplayable.

[Q] Mother's Day gift...need ROM suggestion

So I got a kindle fire for my mom for mother's day...need some advice though. *Keep in mind that she used to use a touchpad running CM9, but recently broke her screen...
With that said, she also did occasionally need help with ICS. That *may* have simply been bc cm9 wasnt entirely stable on the touchpad at the time (wifi issues, occasional reboots, etc.)...do you suggest that I give her AOKP/CM9 on her Kindle Fire, or should I just leave it stock? She mainly used the touchpad for reading, simple gaming (puzzle games mainly, angry birds, etc), email, and web, basic news apps (last I know of was Google Currents).
I know most ppl suggest that stock is fine for basic users, but just wanted some other suggestions in my case, since she's coming from a CM9 touchpad...albeit she did not use ics to it's fullest IMO.
Thanks

If she's only going to be using it for that stuff then I say go with the MoDaCo Gr8 ROM. It's stable, fast, and has Google Play.
If you want ICS then go with Energy or gedeROM.
Thanks for the suggestion...I did see that, but I wonder how any of Amazon's auto-updates may affect it? I do not live nearby, so if somehow her firmware gets autoupdated, and it breaks things (mainly GAPPS I would assume), I wouldn't be able to fix it asap...I don't want to set false expectations
i would stay on stock with root, with most of the roms not being stable and you don't live close...then stock is best,i'm on stock 6.3.1 with root...if it does updated the only think is she looses root and that very easy to get back...i'm using go launcher and over clock to 1.2 ghz....all i think one would need for basic things...

You can modify some file and it will prevent it from updating automatically.

Here is the file that you need to rename.

I'd recommend AOKP Milestone 5. Remember to remove the unicorns.
HOWEVER, the recovery is extremely easy to get to, and the last time my grandmother accidentally went into recovery she wiped the entire system. Flash stock recovery if possible.

I just got my mother a kindle fire and put MoDaCo Gr8 on it because I figured it would be the best of both worlds: Play Store with no updates but stock Amazon functions intact (only way to still play Amazon Prime Video, which you get free for first month). She also lives to far away for me to maintain it for her, so I decided on MoDaCo because some folks said it is immune to updates. However after reading through the MoDaCo ROM thread, I see that previous versions were not immune to updates and nobody has talked about this version being immune to updates, but some are renaming the file etc/security.otacerts.zip to be doubly sure it will be immune to updates (you dont want updates because it breaks root and Play Store). A few folks who have MoDaCo Gr8 did NOT rename this file and report that they did not get the update.
I would highly suggest the MoDaCo Gr8 ROM because it is really nice, stable, optimized, stock, has location services, rooted with Play Store and other Google services, and possibly immune to updates, but do what I failed to do when I sent mine off to my mother and rename that etc/security/otacerts.zip file. Then I think you can be reasonably sure it will be immune from updates.
You can install GO Launcher, make it the default launcher, configure a wallpaper and lock it (with KFU), and add a shortcut back to "Launcher" (kindle fire launcher) which will launch the stock looking kindle fire interface like an app... home button always brings you back to GO... this way it feels like a fully unlocked android tablet.... VERY SLICK!

[Q] r800x/CDMA rom compatibility?

Hi all!
I picked up a Verizon Xperia Play r800x at a thrift store yesterday for $33. Needless to say, I was excited for the find!
I've been looking at the various roms available, and amd getting mixed messages on what is compatible with the r800x... A lot of the information I am finding seems to be outdated.
So, simply put, what compatibility issues should I be concerned about when looking for roms? I'm trying to find a debloated, gaming centric rom, but the ones I have been looking at do not specify GSM/CDMA compatibility. If anyone has a rom recommendation for the device, or can tell me what to look for, I would be very appreciative!
Just as an aside, I do not ever plan on using the phone as a "phone," since I'm on T-Mobile and, well, ya know. I do want Wifi to be working, obviously, but the cellular functionality is totally superfluous to me, if that makes a difference.
Thanks!

If you don't care about cellular service then you can use any ROM. I recommend you get gin2 jellybean or Aurora play, or xperia next 2 , or dixperia 3, or Bos. They are all great roms but you should also unlock your boatloader and flash a custom kernel like lupus v12 so you can over clock it'll make gaming a lot smoother

Awesome! Thanks for the reply! I'm probably going to be using dixperia 3, that one looks super nice!

So the real question is if you intend on using as a phone or not. If you do, I personally recommend unlocking, rooting, and staying with stock (debloat it with Titanium Backup or the like.)
You'll find that the original Verizon rom is ridiculously stable (very plain vanilla), has around 212 or more of free ram, and everything "just works" how it's supposed to.
Use Holo Launcher and Holo Locker if you want the JB look.

The OP said that they didn't intend on actually using it as a phone, as they are on the T-Mobile network (and thus couldn't use it as a phone anyway).
Also, the 2.3.4 Verizon version broke the Google sync, which causes a host of issues (Google Talk doesn't work, stuff done on the Google Play store website won't be noticed by the phone until Google Play is launched on the phone itself, notifications from some apps will not work).

I swear I didn't see that part :cyclops:. And you're right: 2.3.3 is definately the place to stay if staying stock.
That's unfair!
I'm bought one secondhand in 2015 for $41. Sh•t.

[Q] So many questions. Total rookie here.

Ok, so I just rooted my tablet, my first time too. But I have a few questions.
I have no idea what custom recovery is? How do I get it, and what are some apps and stuff I should not do before I get it.
What are some apps you recommend? Keyboard apps, uh...any apps I guess.
My biggest question is, I downloaded a emulator called dolphin emulator, so I could play the old gamecube Pokemon Colosseum. But it wont work. I do not know if any of you use this program, but any help would be appreciated. The game actually starts, shows the nintendo symbol, goes to a weird grey screeen instead of the studios logo animation, and then turns black. The fps is around 21, and during audio or the grey screen, it goes to 13 - 15 fps. Any Ideas on what might be wrong? Maybe RAM or something of that nature.
What are things like Nova and Apex?
Also, what do i need to do to install roms? What should I have before I install a rom? And what kind of roms do you recommend?
um...and I guess anything else you could tell a complete rookie. I have no idea what I'm doing. OTL
also, what is the bloatware that i can get rid of?
ugh, basically, what have you done for your rooted note? What are some things you would recommend to another person for their device.
and for some reason i cant download SetCPU, so I downloaded CPU Tuner. What are some settings you recommend.

Ok, my first bit of advice is to start reading. Things like custom recovery are easily figured out with a little research. As far as I know, the only custom recovery we have for our tablets is TWRP 2.6.x.x, not sure what version they are on now since I am not using it.
As for what to do after root, that is up to you. Get the pro version of Titanium Backup, and SuperSU at the very least, they will be very important if you want to freeze/delete bloatware and modify your phone at all.
Can't help you with the Pokemon thing.
Nova and Apex are launchers. Try them out and see if you like one better than the stock launcher. I run Nova on mine.
To install a ROM, you will need to first download TWRP, then flash the ROM. Read the directions for flashing the ROM fully before you do anything.
As for bloatware, start by freezing things you don't use in TiBu, and go from there.
In all honesty, you need to read, read, read and then read some more. You don't want to turn your tablet into a $600+ paperweight.
As for me? I am rooted running the stock ROM, Nova Prime launcher, and I froze a bunch of bloat. It is plenty fast, smooth, stable, and it looks great.
lol the dolphin emulator won't work because it requires an extremely powerful machine. It will only work with maybe 2 or 3 devices currently.
The developer posted this in the app description:
"If you're expecting reasonable speeds out of this, you are sorely mistaken. This will run slow on every single Android device, no matter if it is the most powerful one in the world.
Some caveats
- It will crash. Alot.
- It might need to be force closed and ran multiple times to work.
- It will run slow"
Why immediately install new ROMs? There are no many ROMS for this device anyway. Rooting will help you to freeze unnecessary Samsung software, as already mentioned above (using Titanium). To try different launchers (Nova, etc.) you don't need to be rooted, just install and play with them. You have a powerful machine, learn to use it, use all the features (S Pen, multi-window, pen window, etc.) before playing with other ROMs.
Since you are rooted you must get this app:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2646432
Makes multi window way more useful.
Also Xposed Framework and multi window manager so that you can add any application to the multi window menu.
Actually there are a lot of cool things you can do with Xposed.
