On the Epic (SPH-D700), is it possible to flash a full modem (not a patch file) using CWM?
What I have in mind is over in the Epic Touch forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1397954
I've also looked into Mobile ODIN, but there's no EPIC4G support (yet).

I'm searching for a way to reflash EL30 through CWM. (I've been searching for a few days now.) Thanks.

NO. It is not possible to access the modem section of our phone through flashing. The best we can do is flash a delta of the modem provided by Samsung. You would need to be on the required modem, in this case EC05 and there are flashables to add the delta to get you to EI22 and EL30. Our only method is Odin or Heimdall to change the modem.
Thanks for your reply. That's what I thought, but the info I found about the Epic Touch and Mobile Odin gave me some hope. Are my current options to wait for a new delta for CWM (and hope it fixes the problem) or visit a Sprint store for either exchange or repair? I'm tech saavy enough to get my hands dirty (hardware and software), so throw me every DIY option there is. lol

Okay
Odin/Heimdall is not an option for me at the moment. I had written why in the OP, but it seems to have been removed or I accidentally deleted it before posting. (Late night)

And you are on the EL30 now and think that it is bad?
If they release a new update it should contain a new delta but those are big "ifs". You need to get the USB issue working with Odin.

Yes and yes (a big if). Before flashing the EL30 modem using ODIN, my Epic was using the EI22 modem and the latest CleanGB Rom (MTD). I experienced no problems with this setup. After flashing the EL30 modem, the LED no longer works and the USB port doesn't work. (It will charge the phone, but it is not recognized as a media drive or by Odin/Heimdall when in download mode. Yes, I even tried Linux+Heimdall )
I have a second Epic4G which works flawlessly with EL30. I flashed the second Epic with the same EL30 modem file, so I know the file, the cable, drivers, etc are OK. For my first Epic, if the modem flash wasn't what caused the problem, then it may have been an hour or two after flashing the modem when I was tinkering by overwriting a system apk file (video enabled Gtalk apk). However, I have wiped clean and reinstalled CleanGB ROM using CWM and the problem still exists, so I doubt that caused the problem unless overwriting system files has some risk of corrupting different partitions.
I too have 2 Epics. One would connect and the other would not on a Gingerbread leak in mass storage. After Odins and reflashes it turned out to be bad drivers even though the other phone connected. So try reinstalling the drivers and just for kicks try a different cable and also try to connect to Odin with the battery out using the USB as power and putting it into download mode.

Good suggestions, however, I've already tried three different cables (The third cable is new and high quality), tried different USB ports on my PC (no hubs), tried different PCs, with/without battery in download mode, and I have reinstalled the drivers. (tried both 32 bit and 64 bit in Win7 Ultimate; no need for special drivers in Linux.) I will try all of this again when I have the time. Why would drivers work on one Epic but not another? Are Samsung phones known to have bad quality control? (voltage levels, etc should be within a certain tolerance.) My two Epics were bought new a month apart and the hardware versions are the same.

I racked my brain on the "why one should work and not the other" connecting. That is why I didn't try the drivers for days. Yes each phone can be that radically different. It looks like you covered all the bases. That only leaves possible dirt in your cable slot. You can also try restoring an old nandroid to see if that makes it start working.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Yes the voltage in download mode is different it could be the port on the epic is dirty or needs to be replaced. I forget the exact amount but if its not the exact voltage the pc won't recognise it nor will odin.

A nandroid restore didn't fix the problem. As a reminder, the LED also stopped working, so I'm not entirely convinced it is a physical problem such as a bad or dirty usb port. (If it helps, I found that the LED works for notifications but no longer lights while charging the phone.)

Also, supposedly, gingerbreak only works on phones that have odined to ec05. That's the consensus at least.

I have tried all available options for troubleshooting and can not figure it out. The drivers are good, different cords, different Root techniques, I mean everything ... but my phone won't connect even after re-installing the samsung drivers.

Before Odin can detect it you must first make sure your computer can detect your phone. That way you'll know if the drivers work fine. If it does then get a new USB cable to connect it while using odin. I got a rocketfish usb cable and it works better than the samsung one...or any usb cable such as a blackberry's works fine.

When trying to root make sure you aren't using a stock samsung usb cable. Some have been successful using them while rooting but for most it sucks. Are you enabling usb debugging?
I am having the same problem. Gingerbreak failed to run with the same error, and no amount of different cable or port (tried three of each) will avoid the phone not connected message when attempting one click root. I'd love to hear ideas to resolve either of these or other rooting options.
Update - tried the Bonsai unlocker mentioned in this thread, and tried the one click method on a second machine to which I had never connected my device. In all cases, got a phone connection failure. And yes, I have enabled USB debugging, and when I disable it, I am able to mount the phone just fine and see the external memory card, so there's nothing wrong with the USB port or cable. I have a relatively new replacement phone that came preloaded with Froyo. Maybe something has been done to newer devices to disable this ability? Can't imagine what else could be wrong.
thanks,

My bad - apparently I didn't have the right drivers installed. I assumed since I could connect in USB mode without debugging I had the right drivers, but apparently not. Sorry to bother. In case anyone else runs into this, I apparently can't post a URL to help you, so go look for a post on the Epic "All Things Root" forum on Android Forums,
It appears I am successfully rooted after having to reboot the phone once after a failure the first time I ran. Woohoo! Now I can do a true full backup.

The only way I could get mine to work (I would get the same errors using gingerbreak) I restored the phone to factory settings using the samsung recovery mode. Press power volume down and camera button. Your volume buttons are used to highlight the text and the home key is used to select. Wipe cache 3 times, and wipe the dalvick (spelled wrong) 3 times, then reset phone back to factory settings through here. Remember you will lose everything so back up your apps using AppBrain. I ran GingerBreak again and it worked perfectly. I would also get the same errors when trying to odin. Its been that way everysince I updated to 2.2. By the way I am EC05, did that before I updated because I was running midNight Rom.

Ok, I have win7 and cannot root with my comp. I spent weeks trying to get it to work, and I gave up. At the time, I had an older machine with XP, and was able to root my phone via that older machine. Since then I have moved and that comp is in storage.
I'm getting all kinds of errors and the phone keeps shutting off constantly (currently running srf) and I have tried to wipe and reinstall many many times.
Being that my comp doesn't see my phone (only sometimes it sees it for storage, but that only happens WITHOUT debugging, and even then is hit or miss. I use wireless ftp for file transfers) I can't Odin and I can't root. I tried the "no computer" roots before, but it would never work, and I always had to use my older computer with XP.
Is there a ReRFS WITH root? I've searched and can't find one. I'd like to go back to stock w/ root so I can start flashing roms from scratch.

Yes I do. Orange cwm.
DRockstar.Clean.Kernel.EC05.v1.05.zip
"Flash this kernel to have root and busybox, this kernel has reboot recovery to cwm 3.1.0.1, and is ROM Manager compatible."
Does that kernel actually root the epic? If so, I could flash the ReRFS and then flash that for root ect.
I think so.
Posted by Mr. Z's Epic 4G.
So i flashed the ReRFS and rooted with the DRockstar.Clean.Kernel.EC05.v1.05.zip. Then flashed purple cwm and then flashed the srf rom again.
On stock GB EI22. Cannot currently use ODIN. More details on that here, for the curious: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1375005
Question:
In my current state, is it possible to flash a stock EC05 from the default recovery?
I could then use one of the root methods without ODIN, then get CWM, then flash back to GB using a rooted kernel / custom ROM...
Just flash an EC05 ROM, you are rooted right? Reread it...guess not. No, there is nothing you can flash from stock recovery that will take you back to EC05 from GB.

Give Heimdall a try. It has it's own drivers.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I had tried Heimdall from a Macbook Air as well (in addition to the other 4 computers I mentioned in the reference thread). It did not work. It did not do anything, similiar to Windows.
However, I did manage to get ODIN to work!!! Same setup I've always used, which until this incident, had always worked (same PC, same USB port, same cable, same phone, same person, same room in the house, etc.).
The only thing I did was uninstall the drivers completely, then reinstall, rebooting in between every step.
Afterwards, I opened ODIN, put phone in download mode, and BAM!, like magic, it worked again. 7 seconds later, I had CWM (ACS 5 1.0.0.0) installed!
Now, I am not sure it had anything to do with re-installing the drivers because:
1. I had the phone briefly connect once during the 4-ish day period... I was booted into Android, Windows did the USB connected sound and I saw "Samsung" under USB Devices in Device Manager. Then, when I removed the cable and booted into download mode, nothing...
2. I expected to hear the USB connection sound, regardless if the drivers worked on not. I would then expect to get a message stating "Could not install drivers" or something to that extent. Perhaps my perception is wrong?
3. No other computer, which had the drivers freshly installed, detected the phone, even with the same USB cable I know works.
Anyways, once CWM was in place, rooting took another few seconds. Ti Backup restored and all seems to be well.
Thanks everyone!
Yup. Happened to me too once. Out of the blue my computer would not recognize my phone with usb debugging on. Reinstalled the drivers and it was fine.

I downloaded the newest version 1.8 from this thread link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1673662
Everything works fine with the exception of the USB connectivity was lost and the computer will no longer recolonize the phone when attached via USB cable.
I download an app called USB switcher and made sure it’s on the mass storage but still inoperable.
When the USB cable connection is made the computer gives and audible note a will briefly flash a storage device for a second in the Computer – Devices with Removable Storage window then quickly disappears.
I’ve tried going back to the EL29 stock ROM about three times and the USB connection works fine with ICS Android 4.0.3 but doesn’t function at all with the latest ICS based custom ROM with the Galaxy S3 theme?
I'd first try to uninstall any samsung drivers you have on your PC then re-install them. Get em here http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.c...342248/Sprint_d710_USB_Driver_v1_3_2360_0.exe
Also try a different USB port AND cable.
If that fails I'd grab Mobile Odin from the market and download one of sfhub's one-clicks and install it (he has instructions for flashing from the phone on signature http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23478866&postcount=869 in his posts.)

Use sfhub's autoroot package to enable mass storage http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24010029&postcount=889
That may work.
I tried uninstalling the drivers and reloading them a few times and even tried it on different computer.
I updated the Kernal using the PC based Odin3 v1.85 and flashed the EL26 stock CWM and might just have to try using the mobile version.

I have upgraded to an S3 from having a Vibrant for years. I rooted and flashed several OS's to my Vibrant in those years without an issue ever. I have been trying to get files transferred to my S3 from my computer for 2 weeks now. The computer has the drivers installed correctly. It is recognized by name when I plug it in (it comes up as SGH-T999, Kies will recognize it too). whenever i try to transfer ANYTHING it stops in the middle of the transfer. just sits there with no further progress to be achieved. This is insanely frustrating. I am unable to root this thing because of the inability to actually transfer.
Things I have tried:
Uninstalling/reinstalling Kies multiple times
Uninstalling all USB device drivers multiple times
Reinstalling drivers through Kies and through Samsung's website multiple times
Factory reset on the phone multiple times (****ing aggravating btw)
Using my old Vibrant cable
Changing between MTP and camera mode... several times
Yelling at it
I have been trying to research how to fix this garbage for weeks now. there is no concrete way to remedy this problem that i have found. every thread about this is littered with the usual "uninstall your driver and reinstall it" nonsense that is the most generic response to anything tech related ever.
What I can tell you is that my phone is definitely getting recognized by anything that can do so. Odin, Kies, My computer, etc etc... it appears that the issue lies in the actual data transfer. As I mentioned, transfers initiate but will lock up mid-process and just hang there infinitely. Same goes with Odin when I try to get it to flash into CWM recovery.
Please, help. any time spent trying to fix this issue is greatly appreciated.
Are you uding the usb cable thst came with the phone?
Have you tried different cables? Or on another computer?
Im guessing your not rooted then?
Try installing the drivers ONLY. get them here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728605
Uninstall previous versions of everything first.
What version odin are you using? Use 3.07 from above post if you're not already.
Also try this app
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1711009
If you are rooted try SwiFTP or another wireless transfer app.
Sorry to mention drivers again but if you're relying on kies to do that for you it could be the issue.

Sorry I missed the part where you mentioned drivers and cable. Damn choppy xda app!

Since you've tried everything else might as well follow this guide and install the drivers through the toolkit.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28175575
I'd also run windows update and check if there's a new bios/drivers for your mobo and usb controller.
If you plug another "foreign" usb device does it install fine?
May not have any bearing whatsoever here but do you have usb debugging checked? And I think I mentioned it in the other post but try a different computer if possible.
You said that this happens when using odin too? As in you start the flash with Odin but it doesn't complete? Or it wont even start? Does it give you any message?
When plugged in in download mode, does Odin show your COM port in the upper left?
Plug in the phone and open device manager. Does it show any errors or anything?

I recommend an app called airdroid. I had issues transferring stuff to and from my Mac and haven't had any problems since I started using the program. Besides it's wireless so I don't have to worry about the wires being a problem

everything else works fine from my 6 USB ports (2 USB 3.0 ports as well). The tool kit solution still needs Odin to root. The problem is not detecting the device. it is the transferring of data. Data transfers begin but that's about it. Odin gets to "firmware update start" and then "boot.img" and just hangs there forever. no change. nothing else.
Is there a wireless way to do this? I have purchased Rom Manager but since i can't achieve root it is just useless now. The phone is brand new from the Tmobile store. Not once has it been dropped (to put into perspective how careful i am with my devices, I managed to drop my Vibrant once in ~3 years, which caused no damage, what a great phone that was). I have not been able to read about this same issue anywhere else either...generally its an issue with the PC not recognizing the device but when someone gets it to link up correctly, it works. this is the opposite.
thank you for your ideas so far.

Odin shows the "0:COM" like it should, which means it is able to read that the device is there, it just is unable to do anything after "boot.img", everything that is needed for this to work via the toolkit method is checked (USB debug and unknown sources).
I just got the s3 and had transfer issues too. Turns out my s2 drivers wasn't perfect for it even though it recognizes the device. I used the s3 drivers instead and that helped things a bit with accessing my phone's storage. So i ended up formatting my internal storage and that seems to do the trick for me.
If that doesn't work and odin still gets stuck then try different usb ports also try different wires

Try connecting without the external sdcard in.
What build are you currently on. Since you haven't roited or anything im assuming you're still on either UVALEM or UVALG1. If so try initiating the software update. It should download the ota thatll take you up to UVALH2. Maybe that'll help.

Did you do that through terminal? doesn't the single partition mean that it would wipe everything?
Make sure the drivers you are using are the same ones that are in my comment (version).
What are you trying to flash through Odin? If the permissions of the files inside the tar file are not correct, the transfer will hang, and do nothing but give a timeout message after a couple minutes. I learned this the hard way.
In summary:
Use a different USB cable.
Download drivers, Odin, and CWM from my signature. After uninstalling the old drivers manually through devman (be sure to delete them during uninstall), reinstall them from the package you downloaded. Then use Odin to flash CWM. All three of these packages are tested and known to be 100% working. Please don't ignore this step. If I can't verify the validity of your installation sources, I can't rule this out for troubleshooting purposes.
If this doesn't work, it is most likely your computer. Are there any BIOS firmware updates that improve USB compatibility, or USB controller driver updates? The USB 3.0 isn't natively supported on =< Win7, so those are third party drivers. But I will assume you are connected to a USB 2.0 port.

None of that worked. I did find a BIOS upgrade for my mobo that i didnt know was released, flashed it, and transfers still hang. i tried everything from your sig to no avail. i DON'T have access to another computer... BUT i do have Ubutnu running on my comp in conjunction with Win 7 Ultimate 64. can't seem to find too much on non-international S3 stuff for linux.
this has consumed my entire day and i am so frustrated.
Try in safe mode? This sounds really frustrating. I gave up when this happened with my mac. I think someone said it already but I always recommend Airdroid. It's just simpler.

airdroid for music transfers, got it. im screwed on the root thing though.
I didn't do it through terminal. I just connect it to the computer. Right click phone's internal storage and clicked format. It was a very quick format.

so let me get this straight... you plugged the phone in, right clicked on it in a browser window, clicked on format, selected yes to the "hey, this is going to erase everything on the device" warning pop up, and you were able to transfer files no problem after that? no adverse side effects came from this? it sounds like it would brick the phone...

Different computer?

I had these frustrations as well. I finally move where I was connecting the cables. First instinct was the easiest access on my computer. It always failed. I finally decided to try my back usb and it worked it also picked up as a mass storage as well.

Yeah I'm starting to think you might need to use a different computer. Odin detects so it's not drivers.
From my experience with the hangs when i was on the s2. Many also reported this but what helped was different usb ports, wires, or an entirely different computer.
