Rerfs with root - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I have win7 and cannot root with my comp. I spent weeks trying to get it to work, and I gave up. At the time, I had an older machine with XP, and was able to root my phone via that older machine. Since then I have moved and that comp is in storage.
I'm getting all kinds of errors and the phone keeps shutting off constantly (currently running srf) and I have tried to wipe and reinstall many many times.
Being that my comp doesn't see my phone (only sometimes it sees it for storage, but that only happens WITHOUT debugging, and even then is hit or miss. I use wireless ftp for file transfers) I can't Odin and I can't root. I tried the "no computer" roots before, but it would never work, and I always had to use my older computer with XP.
Is there a ReRFS WITH root? I've searched and can't find one. I'd like to go back to stock w/ root so I can start flashing roms from scratch.

Sounds like the cable but wierd it works on old but not new I have heard that sometimes only certain usb ports on a computer will work something about being attached to the board or something So if using the stock cable replace that with something like a blackberry one and maybe try a different usb port on the computer

Thanks for trying to help, but I spent weeks trying to get it to work. I've tried every usb port (even the ones directly connect to the mobo)... I even went out and bought a new data cable.

Yes I do. Orange cwm.

DRockstar.Clean.Kernel.EC05.v1.05.zip
"Flash this kernel to have root and busybox, this kernel has reboot recovery to cwm 3.1.0.1, and is ROM Manager compatible."
Does that kernel actually root the epic? If so, I could flash the ReRFS and then flash that for root ect.

I think so.
Posted by Mr. Z's Epic 4G.

So i flashed the ReRFS and rooted with the DRockstar.Clean.Kernel.EC05.v1.05.zip. Then flashed purple cwm and then flashed the srf rom again.

So I've tried connecting my phone to several computers and they all end up saying that the device is not recognized. Because of this, I can't even odin my phone to stock or anything else. So I can't exactly call sprint or samsung about it. It was working fine up until just now. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Did you download the Samsung driver ?

Yes, sounds like your data cable is going bad. Grab another one. Palm Pre or Blackberry has heavy duty cables. Heard there was a good one for $2 on Amazon. Get fresh drivers from Samsung's site or from here:

Hope this helps.
Yea I've gotten the right drivers. Right now, I'm in the process of doing root and flashing roms without a computer... using rom manager. Maybe a new rom will fix it. I'm going to order a new data cable and hope that will work.

I've tried 4 different cables on multiple computers. Mine says USB not recognized as well. How do you root and flash roms with rom manager???
Hey man, same thing was happening to me, I ended up bricking my epic with the stock cord, but I grabbed my brothers evo cord, and worked first try, dump the stock cable definitely.

I used this method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1062395
Also, instead of using cwm 2.x, you can go the development forum and get the new cwm and flash that instead, just make the necessary adjustments (i.e. when flashing using ROM manager, tap 3.x instead of 2.x etc. etc.)
I am now running gingerbread on here. And I am going to try a new cable that I ordered later this week.

[Q] gingerbreak root problem

I've been trying to root my epic 2.2 with gingerbreak and it doesn't work. I've done It before and now it says "Not sure what happened.exploit failed or reboot failed. Reboot manually and see if you have Superuser" I did everything right
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Before Odin can detect it you must first make sure your computer can detect your phone. That way you'll know if the drivers work fine. If it does then get a new USB cable to connect it while using odin. I got a rocketfish usb cable and it works better than the samsung one...or any usb cable such as a blackberry's works fine.

When trying to root make sure you aren't using a stock samsung usb cable. Some have been successful using them while rooting but for most it sucks. Are you enabling usb debugging?
I am having the same problem. Gingerbreak failed to run with the same error, and no amount of different cable or port (tried three of each) will avoid the phone not connected message when attempting one click root. I'd love to hear ideas to resolve either of these or other rooting options.
Update - tried the Bonsai unlocker mentioned in this thread, and tried the one click method on a second machine to which I had never connected my device. In all cases, got a phone connection failure. And yes, I have enabled USB debugging, and when I disable it, I am able to mount the phone just fine and see the external memory card, so there's nothing wrong with the USB port or cable. I have a relatively new replacement phone that came preloaded with Froyo. Maybe something has been done to newer devices to disable this ability? Can't imagine what else could be wrong.
thanks,

My bad - apparently I didn't have the right drivers installed. I assumed since I could connect in USB mode without debugging I had the right drivers, but apparently not. Sorry to bother. In case anyone else runs into this, I apparently can't post a URL to help you, so go look for a post on the Epic "All Things Root" forum on Android Forums,
It appears I am successfully rooted after having to reboot the phone once after a failure the first time I ran. Woohoo! Now I can do a true full backup.
-- robert
The only way I could get mine to work (I would get the same errors using gingerbreak) I restored the phone to factory settings using the samsung recovery mode. Press power volume down and camera button. Your volume buttons are used to highlight the text and the home key is used to select. Wipe cache 3 times, and wipe the dalvick (spelled wrong) 3 times, then reset phone back to factory settings through here. Remember you will lose everything so back up your apps using AppBrain. I ran GingerBreak again and it worked perfectly. I would also get the same errors when trying to odin. Its been that way everysince I updated to 2.2. By the way I am EC05, did that before I updated because I was running midNight Rom.

[Q] Flash back to stock FROYO EC05 via Samsung Recovery?

On stock GB EI22. Cannot currently use ODIN. More details on that here, for the curious: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1375005
Question:
In my current state, is it possible to flash a stock EC05 from the default recovery?
I could then use one of the root methods without ODIN, then get CWM, then flash back to GB using a rooted kernel / custom ROM...
Just flash an EC05 ROM, you are rooted right? Reread it...guess not. No, there is nothing you can flash from stock recovery that will take you back to EC05 from GB.

Give Heimdall a try. It has it's own drivers.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I had tried Heimdall from a Macbook Air as well (in addition to the other 4 computers I mentioned in the reference thread). It did not work. It did not do anything, similiar to Windows.
However, I did manage to get ODIN to work!!! Same setup I've always used, which until this incident, had always worked (same PC, same USB port, same cable, same phone, same person, same room in the house, etc.).
The only thing I did was uninstall the drivers completely, then reinstall, rebooting in between every step.
Afterwards, I opened ODIN, put phone in download mode, and BAM!, like magic, it worked again. 7 seconds later, I had CWM (ACS 5 1.0.0.0) installed!
Now, I am not sure it had anything to do with re-installing the drivers because:
1. I had the phone briefly connect once during the 4-ish day period... I was booted into Android, Windows did the USB connected sound and I saw "Samsung" under USB Devices in Device Manager. Then, when I removed the cable and booted into download mode, nothing...
2. I expected to hear the USB connection sound, regardless if the drivers worked on not. I would then expect to get a message stating "Could not install drivers" or something to that extent. Perhaps my perception is wrong?
3. No other computer, which had the drivers freshly installed, detected the phone, even with the same USB cable I know works.
Anyways, once CWM was in place, rooting took another few seconds. Ti Backup restored and all seems to be well.
Thanks everyone!
Yup. Happened to me too once. Out of the blue my computer would not recognize my phone with usb debugging on. Reinstalled the drivers and it was fine.

Just use the froyo upgrade tool

[Q] Att S3 Wont Connect to Computer

I currently rooted using the latest version of the Sons of Android ROM. Last night I made a back-up of it and flashed the Synergy ROM to test it for a friend. When I restored my back-up, I could no longer connect to the computer. I tried to reinstall the drivers through Kies and also direct from Samsung. The phone charges when connect to the USB port, but does not connect. I have tried two computer so I think it is the phone.
I search the forums and didnt find anything that help.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you!

I can not find any fast charge setting. I am starting to worry that I might have damaged the phone. I hope I just need to re-flash a driver or something.
Thank you!
make sure you're using the factory cable for the device.
try another USB port, preferably a port directly connected to the computers motherboard.
delete the current USB drivers for your phone on the computer. reboot it. in task manager, stop any kies background processes. reinstall drivers. reboot and see if that takes.

Did you make a nandroid of the previous rom ? Flash back to that . Flashing any rom made for the NA version of the Galaxy s3 will NOT brick your phone. NO physical damage will happen in any way.
Yes check the cord to make sure its not that....samsung phones are picky....even with the same cord.
Fast charge is usually in the kernel settings menu. It will be something you would had to enable, I've never seen it come enabled on a rom. What kernel are you on ? I don't think you see that setting on TW based rom's anyway ( I assume you are on SoA right now?)
Have you tried to do a complete wipe and flash another rom ?

I have a nandroid of my stock (after rooted) ROM, but it is on my computer now, not on the phone so I cant access it. I also had a nandroid of Sons of Android that was connecting just fine before I flashed Synergy ROM. I restored the Sons of Android ROM (nandroid) that was still on my external SD card and that didnt fix it.
I just did a complete wipe (Cache, Davlik Cache, System, Factory Reset, and Internal Memory), then installed the Wicked ROM with the stock kernel. It still doesnt work.
I tried two different cord on two different computers with no luck.

USB Debugging is currently enabled, but I have tried it both ways.
I also am noticing my data connection is really, really slow, much slower than normal. I looked under the Synergy ROM and there was some talk of needing to reflash modem and bluetooth when reverting to a stock kernel. Could this be the problem?

[Q] Epic 4G (D700), ODIN and "Unknown Device"

Okay i have seen similar posts around, and I apologize if this bothers anyone but when I post a thread asking for help, its because I've tried most solutions and have gotten nowhere. I recently bought one.of.these devices and I have to say for an old 1GHz device, its pretty darn smooth! (Got it for my girl who broke her phone. Cost $20 MINT screen, and some scuffs.on the trim believe it or not, fully functional, clean ESN)
I love for all devices in the house to be rooted and off that dreaded Gingerbread android. I have been stuck since i got it trying to use ODIN to flash CWM, and root it to flash a JB based rom. Problem is i installed the drivers, got the ODIN version required, have the CWM tar file, etc, the phone gets detected while on in ADB, normal file transfer way and so on. BUT Download Mode? Nope, i get the dreaded "Unknown Device" issue.
Now as I always read before annoying others, I read that switching the USB cable helps. I've tried 8 USB cables, and no go. 2 Samsungs (i read those are #1 NO GOs), 3 LG cables (device doesnt appear at all), and 3 non brand. No good.
I know Mobile Odin wont work, I rooted it using Framaroot.apk for now, but I need CWM for the rom flashing part.
So now that its 2013, is there really no other way other than ODIN? I tried using ROM Manager, it flashes but doesnt do a thing except boot into stock recovery (miracle no bricks or bootlooping). If I had Linux on my PC, will it get detected or its just the darn cable?
OR is there a specific USB cable brand I should go for that is guaranteed to work? I dont mind buying it just have been waiting to make sure.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

I use this cable and have had zero issues. http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10303&cs_id=1030307&p_id=5458&seq=1&format=2
Well there's good news and bad.
Got an official BlackBerry USB cable.
Bad is the device is STILL not recognized.
The drivers have been properly installed, there is no updating the drivers manually, effing Windows won't let me. What the hell can I do now?
If only Mobile Odin worked, or there were other methods, I wouldn't be going thru this mess...
Like where did I go wrong?
I would swap out Windows to Linux, but I don't see how that will get the device detected.
Matter of fact I was trying to install a Linux based OS from my flash drivd, and it corrupted it. Theres 8gb Ill never see again...
Any other ideas? Will Linux pick up the device?
EDIT: This USB unlike the others BRIEFLY detects it as a USB Device, then goes back to unknown when I uninstall it thru Device Manager

Are you plugging into a port directly on the motherboard? (IE: A port on the back of the machine.) Using an emulated port or hub can cause this at times.
FYI, there are 2 drivers. One is for when the phone is fully booted in Android. The other is the driver when in download mode. Have you tried using another machine?

I think your issue is driver related. I had similiar issues and updated the wiki with the drivers that ended up working for me.
