[Q] Did I get an already rooted phone from Sprint? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I finally got my replacement phone in today because my previous Evo was boot looping and the Sprint techs couldn't fix it. I was debating whether to root again or wait for a bit. I figured I would just check to see what kind of Evo I am dealing with. I was looking at the HW and it is v.003, with the 4.54 ota. I loaded in to bootloader and saw a little surprise as follows:
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT 2.16.0001
MICROP-042f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMELC03_16ac
RADIO-2.15.00.0808
Since it says S-OFF, am I already rooted? Any way I can test this?

Your nand unlocked already so just flash a recovery then the superuser zip and binaries located at androidsu.com or just flash a recovery and just flash a rom of your choice

Wow! What kind of luck is that !!?? Sprint gave you a rooted (unlocked, rather) Evo!? Awesome. I rooted my HW 002 right after launch, so I wouldn't even know how to root these days. Lol. Awesome for you! When I rooted, there was a main version and mtd you could flash thru hboot and then a few terminal commands to install recovery and...viola. lucky you

Just to clarify, all I need to do is flash a custom recovery and then make a nandroid backup (just in case) and flash a custom rom? So I can save the pc36img for amon on the root of my sd, load in to boot loader, let it read and update, then load recovery from there right? Just want to make sure I am not missing anything. Typically, I have to go through the trouble of unlocking it first lol.

Cool! Thanks again for clarifying that. Wow unlocked straight from Sprint. It is refurbished. I figured they would check that before sending them out again? Flashed Amon_RA 2.3 and got ICS p8 from drew loaded up now. I feel complete again!!!

I've seen this before. Apparently, since the OG is EOL, they don't care anymore. As long as there's stock firmware on there and they fixed whatever hardware issue there was, I guess they figure if it's rooted it doesn't matter, since it's out of warranty anyway .

My brother received his refurbished EVO in November and brought it to me to root and it was already s-off. Consider it a gift I guess.

How do I flash recovery with S-Off?

So I had to take my phone to Sprint. They flashed the original RRU back onto it.
I still have S-off though. So in order to root my phone again, do I need to go through the unrevoked method? Or is there a way I can just somehow flash clockworkmod recovery (through Hboot?), and then I'd be good to flash new ROMs from there?
Thanks.
adb amon ra
Search the forums, I remember reading about this specific issue, I believe you need to just push a custom recovery onto your phone and flash a rooted rom. Are you experienced with adb? Or I'm guessing you unrevoked 3'd your evo. Load amon ra and push that recovery back on.
if you're s-off try place on the root and flash this, then you should be good, you can flash a new rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764062&highlight=Recovery+hboot
I did try the search. No luck. Not good with adb but if I just have to put an image into my root directory and then flash it in hboot I can do that. I would just need the image

I can't see where you're referring to on the unrevoked website. I've been to both www.unrevoked.com & www.unrevoked.com/#evo and even www.unrevoked.com/recovery and the only options I have is to actually go through the entire "Painless root & reflash" process. I was hoping to just download only the clockworkmod PC36IMG image.

[Q] Inc in bootloop - even after RUU install

Hi - I've got a rooted AMOLED Incredible.
Yesterday, it went into a bootloop. I could get to HBoot but could not get into recovery. I tried flashing multiple other recoveries but still could not get into it from HBoot (it would go into a bootloop every time I chose "Recovery" from HBoot).
Today, I installed an RUU from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11717873&postcount=2
It updated, and then when I rebooted, it went into the same bootloop, this time with the stock splash screen.
I have HBoot 0.92, Radio 7.28. I'm S-off. I've formatted my SD card, and it's FAT32.
Anyone have any idea what's going on?
Thanks in advance!

I can't get into recovery with bootlooping.
I'll try another SD card.
Basically at this point I'd be happy to get the phone to S-On so that I can take it back to Verizon. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do that as I can't access Recovery without going into a bootloop. I've tried to flash other recoveries and they all put me into a bootloop.
Anyone with any thoughts on how to get s-on without recovery?
Thanks!
I would say flash a bp31img through hboot. That should put you s-on i believe. If you cannot find a pb31img ill come back latter with a link for dl. The pb31img should put you completely stock. The image i have though is from the first shippments of 2.1 but its still stock.

To get s-on you need to be able to access recovery. Also what rom were you on when the phone messed up, was it cm7?

I was on SR 4.2 but I figured it out. The first time I RUU'd the phone was shaking all over the place so I think that just ****ed it up. I reflashed the RUU and it's good to go. I decided I am just going to sell it to my buddy as a stock unrooted with S-OFF, screw it.
Thanks though.

Don't give up hope just now to S-ON. Have you read the below page for getting S-ON?
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever
It should work with stock recovery as long as you're on one of the listed radios.
Get the unrevoked-forever-son.zip and follow instructions for unrevoked-forever.zip, renaming to update.zip
Quick question, I RUU'd back to Froyo so can he still receive the OTA with S-OFF? Or does it need to be S-ON?

It can be s-off but everything else must be stock, including recovery and having all original apps. Since its s-off rooting after the ota is no problem if desired.

Replacement EVO has S-Off from Asurion... What next?

My replacement EVO arrived today, S-OFF with Hboot 2.18.0001
What should I do next? Flash a PC36IMG.zip with amon recovery, or do i need to do something with the bootloader to downgrade/unlock it first?
thanks in advance!
It arrived s-off or you rooted it? If it came that way you need to contact them and demand a new handset!

I wouldn't contact them, it just makes your job easier with already having s-off. You're correct, just flash a recovery and you'll be good to go.
No, you should contact them because they have now sent you a phone that had a voided warranty.
I understand the thought of cool it's already rooted, but you can't say for sure what has already been toyed with.
r2doesinc, a premiere developer, had this issue and took it to corporate and they apologized and sent him a brand new in the box device.
Unlocking is a user decision and needs to be done by the user.

Just in case anyone in a similar situation (s-off but with hboot 2.18 locked) finds this thread in a search:
I went ahead and unlocked the bootloader using the htc-dev method, flashed a recovery with a PC36IMG.zip that was still on my SD card, and everything is copacetic. No problems making a nandroid backup, flashing MikG 3.11 and then an SBC kernel
I assumed the bootloader needed to be unlocked first to flash a PC36IMG that wasn't signed by HTC's keys.

Well you did root / unlock the device correct? Additionally, make sure you don't have a bad download of the file.
Must be "s-off"
Just spent the better part of a week on this one. I also could not get past "parsing". I know how frustrating it is! I wasn't having a problem with Amon RA 2.3, I just wanted the new one!
I am using Nitrous 1.5.3 and posted to that board and got some great support as always. raafeall informed me that I needed to make sure I didn't need "s-off". I did. I had rooted using htcDEV so I was watermarked and "s-on". I followed Captian_Throwback's thread to rool back and rooted through Revolutionary to get "s-off". As soon as it was done I updated to smelkus Amon Ra 4.3!

Yes, you would be able to flash ROMS, Kernels, and 'some' Recoveries with the bootloader unlocked by htc, that is why they did it. You cannot flash different Baseband, Radio, Wimax, etc. unless you are "s-off". And for some reason (I am curious why, now I get something to research!), smelkus' recovery requires that level of permissions.

Yes, if you use Captian_Throwback's thread. It un-roots to a "s-on", "locked", un-watermarked state. Then, you will roll back your radio and baseband, otherwise Revolutionary won't work.
Good luck. The whole process only took me a hour, hour and a half maybe, and I was tip toeing through the whole thing.

The phone is recognized in fastboot,
ADB does not recognize the phone.
I have been going through the forum, and websites for the last 4 hours.
Factory Reset reboots the phone and gives me a security warning.
Recovery does the same.
I also get the USB Not recognized error once the phone comes on. I have installed the HTC drivers, I have also installed HTC Sync and have removed it.
Am I stressing and overlooking something simple? Or, do I need to take this phone out back and lay it to rest.
Thank you in advance

I was given this phone because because it is stuck in the bootloop. Phones come with their own recovery, this isn't a custom recovery. I have tried to run ruus, the error I get is Main version is older. I have also downloaded official stock roms with no luck.
When I hit recovery, the phone reboots back to the bootloader, the recovery never comes up.

Yes, I am familiar with roms, and kernels, I currently use an Evo 4g with Swagged out Stock X 2.0.9.8

I can't for the life of me figure this out. It has me highly intrigued. I am known for stressing out and overlooking minor small steps, so I wanted get some input from the community.
I currently have fastboot open, I am not entirely familiar with the Incredible 2, but normal case S-on = none rooted from my experience.
it was devunlocked then relocked i believe, from the error message i believe you are not flashing the right ruu, you are trying to flash an older one, you need the newest one, it was released a few months ago if i recall correctly and it was no big update but thats the one you need, search for it and try it it should work. if you are s on you cant flash a older ruu than whats already on it
