keyboard settings issue?? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

so does anyone have this issue, everytime I use the keyboard in the notification bar it says choose keyboard input ( I have two languages picked) So when I go into settings my android keyboard is checked off but its greyed out so I cant uncheck it etc. so the question is does this happen to you guys ? If so is it normal etc etc

If you check only one language, you won't have the icon.
I have 2 languages, thus the icon is up there.

[Q] Switch keyboard types easily?

I'm sure there used to be an easy way to change the keyboard type on the DHD, without having to go into Settings ie switching between QWERTY/Phone Pad/Compact.... I can't remember where this was.
Anybody know?
Hold down any text input box whilst selected, press input method and then choose your keyboard. Note that only the keyboards you have enabled in settings will appear.

When I hold down a text input box I just get the paste option... unless I'm misunderstanding...?
Thanks.

Do you have other keyboards installed AND enabled in Settings > Language & keyboard ?
Well, I've got the three standard HTC keyboards listed there... I don't see where one enables them as such, just a radio button to select the one you want to use.

Oh, I mis read your post. As already said before, it's that hard to change on Android.
The workaround is to install an additional input method; I installed Swype. So I have qwerty on Swype and switch to phone-keypad on the default keyboard.
Has anyone got the gingerbread keyboard to work on desire HD, mine keep foreclosing whilst it works flawlessly on my desire.

Keyboard icon in status bar...

There's no way to disable this is there? I can't stand having icons in the notification bar and it's quite annoying to have one every time I need to type.
I already tried freezing the android keyboard in TB but couldn't find the Japanese IME keyboard to freeze. Don't think it would have worked anyway cuz even with the android keyboard frozen it still showed up in the choices...

I'm not sure you should/could get rid of it. Isn't it the only way to change keyboards "on the fly"(apart from menu)?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Yeah as far as I know.. I just wish they had made it the way it normally is.. Which is long press..
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Could you not leave it to system default for no keyboard symbol and then just hold down the mic icon on the keyboard to change it in the fly?

I guess you could "skin" the keyboard icon in framework-res.apk (or wherever that icon is) into a plain black or transparent icon so you can't see it lol.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
You can disable it completely. There is a boolean value in framework-res called show_ongoing_ime_switcher. Some people like it apparently so I've made it toggle-able

I don't have the settings key on my Nexus. When I was using an ICS beta on my Desire it was there, but I didn't even realise till now that my Nexus doesn't have it.
I just mucked around with a few settings and found what brings it up, and therefore what takes it away. In the Android keyboard settings menu, the very top option 'Input languages', if 'Use system language' is ticked, then the keyboard icon won't show up. As soon as you untick that and select more than one language at a time, the icon will be there.
That's what brought it up for me, I don't know if there's another option that can make the icon appear, but hopefully that helps someone?

Yea its annoying even on honeycomb. I don't need an icon every time I use a 3rd party keyboard.

Apps with an status bar icon will get high priority. So keyboard icon to make sure the kb got the response it needs?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Oh... must be talking about third party keyboards... stock doesn't do that.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Stock would do it if you had more than one keyboard enabled..
The idea of blacking out the icon is a great idea.. I just have no idea how to do it lol...

To get the keyboard icon off, you have to delete the keyboards that you aren't using. When you delete these keyboards the keyboard icon should go away. You have to have a file manager like root explorer. Go to /system/app folder and delete openwnn.apk for the Japanese keyboard and Pinyin.apk for the Chinese keyboard. After you do that, the keyboard icon should go away, it did for me.
Never noticed the keyboard icon until I chanced on this thread. At times this forum can seem a little like the hypochondriac flicking through the medical dictionary to see what's wrong with them. But then again if you are I'll..
I think the reasoning behind it is they want it more user friendly for folks that arent hardcore like you'd find on here. Basically, a long press is a "hidden" function compared to having it show up on the top for switching inputs. I kind of like it that way anyway, besides, it only shows up when you are typing anyway so It really doesnt bother me much.
Annoys me too. For the first few days I kept checking it assuming it was an action item, then finally figured out it was just there in case I needed it. If I could disable this notification, I would.
The problem with changing the bool to hide the ime switcher is that third party keyboards no longer switch. Only the stock keyboard seems to be enabled.

Swype on galaxy problem with input method notification?

everytime I use Swype I get a "select input method" notification. I'm running axi0m2.2 and have used two different Swype programs. Both give me the notification at the top everytime I use it. Anyone have that problem or solution?

It's not a problem that's how it is now whenever you have more than one input method.

I never had that problem and have multiple input methods. Once I select Swype it stays that way. I'm running RomannBB's ROM and this version of Swype : https://plus.google.com/108096915458146487046/posts/DTiEnMemga7

Because roman has an option to turn that off. It has nothing to do with what version of swype and it isn't a problem.

Why need a workaround for a feature??
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
This feature makes no sense. It gives you an icon Everytime you open Swype?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
It gives you an option to change your input method no matter what keyboard you are using without long pressing because Google is trying to move away from long presses. It has nothing to do with swype.

I fully understand that, but is there a way to bypass it? From what i understand on certain roms you can, certain roms you can't? I've tried everything i can but it bothers me, everytime i see it i feel i have a text or e-mail. Very annoying.
You could rename, freeze or delete the other keyboard not in use. This will stop the input in status bar because there no other option to choose.
You could do what the Peron above me said, or you have to flash a rom that removes it unfortunately :/ I know Romans rom AOKP has an option to toggle it on or off.

[Q] How to change input method?

Hello, back in Galaxy Note running GB, I was able to change the input language/method by long pressing the message input box. On the Galaxy Note 2 running JB, long pressing the message input box leads to two options: Paste and Clipboard. Could anybody please let me know what is happening and how to fix the issue? This happens also when I use the keyboard to send phone messages. Thanks.
Depending on the ROM you use, they're will be a little logo popped up on the upper left of your task bar. Drag down the notification panel and you can click that and change the input method.

Mine is the stock ROM. Android version: 4.1.1. Kernel version: 3.0.31-391515. Build number: JR003C.N7105ZHALJ4. I don't see that little keyboard logo on the upper left of the task bar. Under language default, I have:
Google Japanese Input: checked
Google voice typing: checked
mazec-T Conversion: unchecked
Samsung Chinese IME: checked but dimmed (I don't know how to type in Chinese.)
Samsung keyboard: unchecked
SwiftKey 3 Tablet: checked
You don't see this icon when you open the message app? If not go to settings/ language and input /default and choose your keyboard that way.. That would suck to have to do it that way all the time though.. Hope you figure it out

Stock keyboard doesn't have auto-correct, I guess you're using a mod like the one by Arsaw (from the apps and themes section or integrated by your rom cook). If so the only way to turn auto-correct off is to turn Predictive Input off or flash stock keybord. But if you want to keep using it and just skip the suggestions for some words you have to tape the word you're writing so it loses the underline and won't get replaced.
